Opera joins Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers to help boost the open-source ecosystem

Opera joins Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers

Hi all,

Today, we’re excited to announce that we are joining the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers as founding members. The initiative is managed by the Linux Foundation and aims to foster support, collaboration, and growth for the Chromium ecosystem. As a neutral space for the Chromium open-source community, it will provide a forum where new ideas and innovative projects can flourish.

The Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers project brings together a number of leading companies and organizations that will play a major part in driving Chromium forward, including Opera, Google, Microsoft, and Meta. Through our combined experience, we are confident that we can help further empower the Chromium project for the benefit of the web.

The Linux Foundation’s experience in managing open-source and community-driven projects ensures an open and transparent governance model.

Why is this important?

Opera has been based on Chromium since 2013 and we have benefited from the ecosystem as well as actively contributed to it throughout that time. We believe that the entire ecosystem, and ultimately all users of the web, benefit from diversity and polyphony – the more innovative companies are out there building quality products, the better it is for users.

For us, being part of the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers from the get-go represents an opportunity to take an even more active role in Chromium’s development and future direction. While we will continue improving our own products and processes, joining this initiative also allows us to take the lessons we’ve learned from our 30-year experience developing great browsers and share them with the broader community. In this way, we are hoping to keep contributing to a better web for all users.

To navigate the challenges of the ever-evolving online landscape, it will be key to adhere to the principles of openness, transparency, and collaboration. This is exactly what we hope the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers can enable for all members and stakeholders.
