Hello there Opera fans,

Since March 7th, smartphone users across the European Union have been seeing a ballot screen asking them which browser they want to set as their default – and with greater freedom of choice has come a huge spike in the number of daily users for our flagship mobile browser! Just between March 5th and March 7th, we saw a 164% increase in new users of Opera for iOS across the EU. Clearly, mobile users out there care about browser choice and are excited to try alternative browsers that, like Opera, deliver a superior online experience!

Users Have Taken Control!

Opera’s having a big moment in Europe, with new users flocking to Opera’s mobile browsers in the aftermath of the DMA’s new regulations. In particular, iOS users have been especially eager to try something new. France has led the way, with the number of new daily users growing five times over, at an astonishing rate of 402%! Meanwhile, new Opera for iOS users in Spain increased by 143%, while Poland and Germany, 68% and 56%, respectively.

Android users are getting on board too, especially in France, where new daily Opera users increased by 54% once the ballot screen started to appear. The results agree with the findings of a survey* Opera conducted among European smartphone users prior to March 6th, which found that 8 out of 10 were open to testing a new browser.

So, Why Are People Choosing Opera?

Privacy and security are the top concern for most smartphone users we surveyed around the European Union. With Opera, you are in control, as both Opera for Android and Opera for iOS feature a free, built-in VPN. Our flagship mobile browsers also come with integrated ad and tracker blockers, as well as a cookie dialog blocker.

AI services are another hot topic for smartphone users, a movement that Opera has been in the vanguard of since early 2023. Aria, our free, native browser AI, can provide you up-to-date information from around the web, intelligent suggestions and recommendations, voice navigation, automated browsing tasks, and more, serving as a true AI browsing copilot.

Aria now also comes with Ask Aria and Aria Voice. Ask Aria comes with two options: “Summarize” or “Tell me more.” So the browser AI can either help boil down long or complicated pieces of text, or it can give you more context and information when encountering something new. Aria Voice, meanwhile, will be your on-the-go assistant with which you can chat to get up-to-date information for your daily queries.

Finally, Opera has always been about making the browsing experience yours! Options for customization and personalization abound: From custom wallpapers, to Bookmarks and Speed Dials, light and dark color themes and more – Opera’s mobile browsers allow you to quickly jump into what matters most, and in your own unique style!

So find out why new users are rushing to ditch the default – download Opera today!
