When culture meets tech: new hit track “Opera Mini” lands in Nigeria
Any brand can try to chase cultural relevance, but very few become part of the culture.
But today, that’s what Nigerian artists Seyi Vibez and Poco Lee have done with their new track “Opera Mini.” One of the defining voices of contemporary Afrobeats, Seyi Vibez has 1.6 billion Spotify streams and consistently appears at the top of the charts. Co-collaborator Poco Lee is one of the most influential personalities in Nigerian street culture and entertainment, who, with over 6.1 million followers on Instagram, has been shaping music discovery and dance trends throughout the country and beyond.
This was not planned: there was no sponsorship or collaboration between Opera and Seyi Vibez or Poco Lee. We found out at the same time as everyone else! But the fact that this came about completely organically is what makes “Opera Mini” so special for us.
Because this song isn’t about browsers or technology – it’s a track that exudes fun and joy, and references the tools that Nigerians use to connect with each other. For us, it’s a reminder of how embedded Opera Mini has become in Nigerian culture. Seyi Vibez and Poco Lee don’t have to explain that to their listeners – they already know, making Opera Mini more than just a tech tool, but rather a danceable cultural reference point for millions.
An integral part of the fabric of everyday life, millions of Nigerians rely on Opera Mini to stay connected. So why did two of Nigeria’s biggest artists name a song after a browser? Well in Nigeria – why wouldn’t they?
