A few weeks ago, we celebrated reaching 10 million daily active users viewing football scores on the start pages of Opera for Android and Opera Mini. 

Since then, passion for the beautiful game has gone into overdrive, and we’ve just hit another massive milestone, surpassing 3m live audio streams for our World Cup coverage so far. 

Among fans who’ve repeatedly visited our World Cup scores hub, it highlights an encouraging trend: those who also tuned into audio commentary are significantly more engaged than those who didn’t. On Opera for Android, the audio crowd generates twice as many pageviews (2x). On Opera Mini, the difference is even more stark, with listeners proving 3.5x more engaged than their non-listening counterparts. 

It’s Haaland-esque finishing. The feature hasn’t just hit the back of the net; it has picked out the exact right target man – our most highly engaged, die-hard football users – and the chance has been converted with aplomb. 

It’s an incredible run of form for a feature that started as a late-season squad player during the EPL, but was thrown straight into the World Cup starting XI and hasn’t needed a hydration break since.

By building audio commentary directly into the browser, the app itself becomes the stadium commentary box. For our listeners, particularly across Africa, it means they can easily dip in to catch key match moments while reading the news, researching a player, or just browsing the web.
