Aria AI can now understand and generate files in Opera Developer

The new year has begun and we’re back with our AI Feature Drops program – where we test new features for our built-in browser AI, Aria, in Opera Developer. To kickstart 2025 we’re making Aria capable of understanding and generating files. This means that we’re expanding Aria’s generation and understanding capabilities beyond image generation and understanding.
This year we’re bringing a slightly different approach to the AI Feature Drops program as we’re trying to lay down the building blocks of an even more robust browser AI. This means that our AI Feature Drops will be focused on improving functionality and bringing improvements to Aria.
In today’s update, we need to differentiate between Aria’s understanding capabilities and its generating capabilities – since they’re two separate processes.
Upload files that Aria can understand
Aria can now read and understand a file that you upload to it and use it as context to answer your prompt. This means that Aria can give you information and insights about the file that you’re uploading – but bear in mind that it will use the file only as context for your prompt, which means that you still need to provide a prompt.
To upload a file you simply need to open a chat with Aria and click the paper clip icon on the right side of the chat input bar and choose a file from your system or clipboard.
You can upload up to 3 files at once, and they can be of different types:
Spreadsheets | .xls.xlsx.ods |
Video | .mp4.mpeg |
Audio | .mp3 |
Other supported files | .pdf.csv.txt.json.odt.doc.docx |
This means that Aria can now understand images, video, audio, text and even spreadsheets. For example, I wanted to know what the World Browser Day is, but I didn’t have time to listen to the whole podcast so I downloaded it and asked Aria about it.
Utilizing Aria’s latest capabilities, it provided me with a rather quick answer that covers the essentials of that specific podcast – and yes, we do celebrate the World Browser Day at Opera. After uploading a file to Aria, it will be deleted after a month if you’re logged into your Opera account, and after 48 hours if you’re using Aria accountless.
This new feature unlocks a world of understanding for Aria that creates new ways of interacting with the AI and with your browser – especially since we’re constantly downloading files from the internet. Now, your built-in browser AI can help you handle those unruly files right from the sidebar.
Aria can generate output and you can save it as a file in your device
We’re also making Aria capable of generating output for you that you can save in your device. This means that if you prompt something to Aria and the output can be presented in the following formats, you’ll get the option to download it as a file.
- JSON – .json
- Text – .txt
- Python Script – .py
- JavaScript – .js
- TypeScript – .ts
- HTML – .html
- Portable Object .po
- XML – .xml
- CSV – .csv
- XLIFF – .xlf
It’s as simple as that, the only thing that you need to do is open a chat with Aria and request it to generate a document in one of the supported formats mentioned above. Aria will understand your intent and the context of the conversation to generate an output that can be downloaded as a file – you simply need to click the download button as pointed below by the big red arrow.
