Introducing Opera News Lite
Hello everyone,
Two years ago we announced the launch of our standalone news app, Opera News, which quickly became the most downloaded news app in the world, and is now the most popular news app across Africa. However, there are still many challenges for people accessing Opera News, such as the high costs of mobile data, slow networks, and insufficient storage on mobile devices. Towards the end of last year, there were more than 3.8 billion mobile internet users in the world, with smartphones representing 65% of mobile connections according to GSMA.
To help combat these challenges, we are launching Opera News Lite, a lighter version of the popular Opera News application, designed for devices with limited data storage capabilities. With a download size of less than one megabyte, we are making Opera News Lite a fast download for everyone, even those on limited mobile networks.
We developed Opera News Lite as per requests from other Opera users like you. The app is highly responsive under all network conditions as it minimizes the use of data and resources to deliver content faster.
Opera News Lite helps make online information even more accessible to everyone. The app offers the features that everyone loves from the regular Opera News app, like personalised news articles, notifications about breaking news, and exclusive original content. However, Opera News Lite is ten times lighter than the regular version.
Faster access to news with new data centers
For Opera News Lite users who live in Kenya, Nigeria, or nearby countries, you will be able to browse four times faster on the app thanks to the recent installation of our local data centers in the cities of Lagos and Mombasa.
Our new local data centers have already proven to effectively reduce connection latency, providing users with 4x faster navigation on any of the Opera products. With these available, we guarantee that you will be able to access news faster than before, regardless of any connectivity conditions.
