We are always thrilled when one of our apps becomes an instant success. We’re even more thrilled that we can say this about our news and video app, Opera News, which is now the most popular news app in the world! Opera News uses a mix of editorial teams and AI to deliver a wide variety of the most relevant world and local news at a glance to any person with an Android or Apple phone.
Just after its early launch in Africa in 2018, Opera News quickly became the most downloaded app in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. But its popularity kept growing and Opera News is now the free news app of choice for millions of people around the world who use it to stay up to date with current events and have the best reading experience for their favorite news.
According to newly released data from Sensor Tower, Opera News was the world’s most downloaded news app during the second quarter of 2019. The surge in new users was driven by fast growth in Africa and India.
Opera News has more downloads than Dailyhunt, Toutiao and Cricbuzz
Sensor Tower further reported that Opera News was the leader in terms of downloads across the top mobile app stores, ahead of Cricbuzz, Dailyhunt and Toutiao.
Opera News is available both as a standalone app and as a news service in many of Opera’s phone and computer browsers. In the second quarter of 2019, Opera News was used by 163 million people around the world, which means the userbase has grown 61% since the same period last year.
Opera News is twice as large as Apple News
Opera News, unlike system default services like Apple News, is a product that people choose to install and use themselves. With an average monthly user base throughout the second quarter of this year of 163 million people Opera News is quickly becoming the world’s most used news application. By comparison, Apple reported to have 85 million unique users of their Apple News service in January 2019.
