This week is shorter as Easter Monday, for many of us, was a day off. Still, we begin the week with a brand new developer update.

Today’s set of changes include various fixes and improvements:

  • More audio and video changes, including fix for a nasty memory leak
  • Installation package is smaller
  • Ad block improvement; support for tag names
  • Sound notifications were turned on while sidebar was unpinned
  • On macOS it’s easier to move window if multiple tabs are opened. Area to start dragging between the plus button and the tabs menu got slightly bigger.

Known issues:

You might notice that some sidebar elements are blinking (especially when you have configured the sidebar or you use synchronisation). We’re already working on this because we realize how annoying it is.

Detailed list of changes in the changelog.

Always nice to have an Opera Developer update to play with for the next few days 😉

  • x a

Sidebar icons as well as checkboxes for their respective toggling were flickering like crazy upon first launch of updated Opera dev on Linux (64bit, Cinnamon; sync enabled).

    • Artex

exactly the same on win10 though i manahed to fix it

    • pauloaguia

      And on Windows 7 too

  • helsten2

    Known issues:
macOS users might notice that some sidebar elements are blinking

    Also happens on Win7x64 !!

    EDIT:
Seems to be fixed on second launch …

    • Marek

I had this too. I went out of the room with laptop running, and came back to the fan going mad. I checked and there’s Opera using 75% of my processor. Then I take a look at it and I see the sidebar flickering. It fixed after restart and it didn’t return yet. That’s on a Win7 x64.

      • Kornelia

Hi Guys, this one is already on our radar as DNA-60590 with high prority.

        • PakSae

Please show your radar info (DNA-xxxx) about other issues in forum, too.
It will let ones know if it is on progress or not.

  • Alexs

Still not fixed the border bug (DNAWIZ-13537) under Linux.
This are the fourth developer build…
So i downgrade again to 45.0.2539.0

    • Leonardo Gomes

Weren’t the last two already in previous build?

      • L33t4opera

Hi Leonardo, yes, but the last three. I didn’t checked it in the previous build for Windows, corrected now 😉

    • pureocean

I wish, Opera developers would add to opera:flags#gdi-font-rendering, so I would upgrade new builds to from 39.0.2234 (which it is last build able to disabling DirectWrite).

I have been using the Cent browser for a long time. Yes, I’m satisfied. Of course I would very pleased if that Cent have a lot feature of Opera.

  • RussianNeuroMancer

Do you able to reproduce DNAWIZ-13312? Any additional info is needed?

    • Kornelia

Looks pretty detail described.. But I was never able to reproduce this on Linux.

      • RussianNeuroMancer

Did you tried to follow steps as described in initial bugreport? I mean install 16.10, then upgrade to 17.04. (As I find now should be reproducible with both of Kubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome.)
If yes, maybe it have something to do with locale? (Try choice Russian interface in installer.)

If you still wouldn’t able reproduce, how I can help debug this and find root cause?

  • DRAKONYUS

Well, any full screen video (youtube, twich) shows an annoying 1 pixel line at the bottom of the page.

    • Tomatoshadow2

What operating system are you on? I’m on MacOS and it doesn’t happen to me.

      • DRAKONYUS

        Windows 7 x64, flash 25.0.0.148

        • tomatoshadow2

Did you file a bug report?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Couldn’t notice it on Windows 10.

      • DRAKONYUS

Does anyone know if it is related to the browser or to the flash player?

        • DRAKONYUS

I had the 44.0.2494 and then upgraded to 46.0.2567.
After a test I noticed that this bug occurs from the version 45.0.2545.
It seems like a space reservation of 1 pixel for the windows taskbar, placed in the bottom of the page. Even if you move your taskbar to any side of the desktop you can always see this annoying 1 pixel line.
I’m not a native english, please appreciate my effort. 🙂

          • Tomatoshadow2

Interesting, as I mentioned before, doesn’t happen to me on MacOS, maybe file a bug report. Have you had a problem with flash before?

        • Leonardo Gomes

Youtube doesn’t use Flash by default.

          What’s your OS?

          • DRAKONYUS

            Posted before, Windows 7 x64

  • Ariane Lu

    http://imgur.com/a/pXEmh
I’m not sure this is a bug or new design?

And… Disqus login page open in new window rather than popup. (DNAWIZ-14216)

    • Leonardo Gomes

Here Disqus login page opens in a new tab.

    • Kornelia

      Same here on macOS.

    • Leonardo Gomes

In Chrome and Vivaldi the login page also opens in a new tab.

      • Ariane Lu

Maybe Chromium changed it? O 44.0.2510.1218 will show popup window, Chrome 60.0.3074.0 open in new tab

  • inDigazzZ

You might notice that some sidebar elements are blinking (especially when you have configured the sidebar or you use synchronisation).

    1. Open Settings page.
    2. Open Opera’s Task Manager
    2. ‘Kill’ process Speed Dial and Settings page
    3. Blinking will stop
    4. Right click on Sidebar and uncheck all items – Whatsapp, Telegram, Bookmarks – ALL
    5. Click Unpin sidebar. If you won’t click Unpin – then Sidebar will appear on new created speed dial and starts blicking.

You won’t have Sidebar – but there will not high CPU usage.

    • Kornelia

Thanks for the details. Will be helpful while fixing.

    • Ariane Lu

Stop blinking after unpin, pin, restart

      • inDigazzZ

i’ve tried pin-unpin & pip-unpin-restart right after the first comment about blinking, but it doesn’t helped me.

    • MrM

      this did work for me

to find operas task bar i had to go to menu, more tools, enable developer menu. then menu, developer tools, opera task manager
the shift + esc shortcut didnt work

it has been the same on both my windows 10 1607 machines

  • Abdolahi

can we expect multi profile like google chrome?
    i really really need this
    please add this in future

    • BK

      how do you use it?

      • Alex Lozano

Despite you’re asking to Abdolahi, I could give some uses for it:

        – Base profile (for new profiles)
        – Test profile (when something fails and private window is not enough)
        – Study profile
        – Work profile
        – Entertainment profile
        – Buyer profile
        – …

        • Abdolahi

          thanks, thats what i mean

  • x a

Both, Google Hangouts extension and GoogleCast are still not working.

The Hangouts extension does not load the content of the popup beyond the “-bubble after login.

Cast leads to sth like “unable to load video” or a never ending splash screen on the Chromecast device. (Cast did work a few versions ago; Hangout ext did work some more versions ago.)

  • x a

Oh, how I hate it, when you force-disable all extensions after a few (most of the time unrelated to extensions) crashes… This time due to reproducible crashes after clicking on “Show certificate info” after a cert issue with skobbler.com. [Linux, 64bit, Cinnamon]

  • qwerzaq

You need to add shuffling of extensions, in the Chrome it has long been in Vivaldi too, added
    https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/shuffling-of-extensions-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-1-9-804-3/

    • How many extensions do you have? Why would you like to rearrange position of extensions?

      • x a

There are plenty of reasons just to re-arrange the order of two extensions.

More reasons arise, once extensions (browser-action buttons) end up in the overflow section (where, oddly, you /can/ re-arrange them as of now using drag and drop): You possibly want a translation button in a well known and always visible location, whereas a button for some style manipulating extension might well be hidden in the overflow.

      • Nekomajin43

It was discussed like 24732ö4 times in the past years. I’d like to decide the order of the buttons in the priority of usage. Especially if I install something that I want to use more often then previously installed extensions.

But, can you give me any reason why it is not implemented already? We can sort the buttons on the sidebar (make it possible on the new sidebar too!), on the bookmarks bar and even in the toolbar overflow panel. So why do we have to bring this up from time to time?

        • kesha2000

“We can sort the buttons on the sidebar”.

How? I can’t, not on current, nor on new.

          • Nekomajin43

I am talking about the extension sidebar, not the start page navigation bar.

          • kesha2000

            Ah, ok.

        • Some things are on a table for a long time, and unfortunately we can’t do everything. Things get their priorities, but they are never constant. Users have their preferences what should be implemented next. It’s a tough task to choose things to be implemented. On one hand you have competition, your plan for future, users’ requests and you can never fulfil all the needs.

We often ask why you would like a certain thing to better understand what is the problem you’re trying to solve which requested solution. Having lots extensions is not a common things, thus better understanding why would it be useful for our users makes it easier to shift things internally.

          • Nekomajin43

These are valid points, but this is one of the missing features that should have been implemented from the beginning, when certain major features were released. Drag and drop is a common technology, and if you were able to implement it for the sidebar and the BM bar, it must not be a hard task to port it to the toolbar. It is a “one line mention at the end of a developer post” feature.

On the other hand, there is one thing you still don’t seem to understand. The problem is not the number of extensions. Actually, that one is already solved, because we CAN move the buttons to the overflow section. I may have only two buttons on the toolbar, but I want to set the order as I think it’s the most handy. Imagine if I reinstall my system, or start using an other computer. One thing is sure, I want to have the extension buttons in the same order on both machines. Should I install them in the same order? What kind of user experience it is?

      • qwerzaq

I use 15 extensions of which 9 of them are in the upper right corner.
I want to drag them so I do not get confused between the translator or the password manager and the extension to save the screenshot and expand the sessions and others at the moment I have a mess

        • That’s quite a lot. I do use extensions but I tend to remove them right after they are not anymore useful. Btw. would you share what extensions do you use and why?

          • qwerzaq

            APNG
            Bridge Translate App
            Translator
            Close Duplicate Tab
            HTTPS Everywhere
            SaveFrom.net помощник
            uBlock Origin
            V7 Sessions
            LastPass: Free Password Manager
These are the extensions I use but I have a mess

      • inDigazzZ

i have 10, but it’s not about quantity, but in order.
I want to see ‘Mute all tabs’ in the end and ‘Site Home’ right after address field.

      • kesha2000

It’s a kind of muscle memory thing, you subconsciously know where’s what and just reach things quicker. Waiting for this since 2013.

      • Alex Lozano

Arrange / hide extension icons = browser politeness

      • Alex Lozano

You have the stuff already built in.

Known trick around 6 months ago.

        Just make it fully available.

  • pauloaguia

I had all three messengers disabled in the Sidebar and after the upgrade Facebook and Whattsapp came back and the SpeedDial was gone. The Speedbar was flickering as so many people reported but that went away after I restarted Opera. But I don’t like to have to reconfigure the SpeedBar after upgrade, please leave my settings the way I set them…

  • Matheus Bitencourt

Opera 45 is taking too much time to be released.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Nope. It still takes about a month for the regular two-months cycle between two stable versions to be reached.

      • Matheus Bitencourt

Two months cycle between releases? WTF?
I thought it was 1 release 1 month. BTW, Opera 45 is in beta already and pretty stable

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, I’d like to ask you to fill a survey to somehow quantify the feature requests: https://goo.gl/forms/RtwV9af9Ot3I7waB2

I know it’s not representative, and the developers probably won’t take it into account, but it may help to show the trends and the top most wanted features.

If you find anything missing from the list, please comment, and I can add it.

  • Tavroz

I am having frecuently problems with the scroll wheel, it happens to me in Opera Stable and Developer, some advice?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Youtube cast is not working…. Something happened and now when I try to cast videos from browser to tv app, nothing happens, only the blue icon is showed that “it cast” to my TV but actually it’s not casting anything!
    MacOS Sierra!

  • Rokan U.

Did anyone else notice that the ad blocker settings won’t sync with Opera Sync? I think it should be included in the sync process.

  • Tratsing

I hibernated Windows 10 64-bit and I left Opera opened in minimized state. After I turned laptop on and maximized Opera from Windows 10 taskbar, then link boxes in the bookmark bar did not react (background did not went grey and box margins were not seeable and links were not clickable). Only two arrows were active in the right side at the end of bookmark bar. After 2 minutes the link boxes suddenly activated (links background went grey and box margins were seeable and links were clickable).

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera developer 46.0.2573.0 😉

  • ovidiu

Is there any plan of offering the option for placing the tabs on a vertical side?

  • Jack Stank

Screen Flicker in Windows 7 after Opera 45 update is cured for me by increasing my display refresh rate from 60 to 75. Tried everything else, e.g., disabling extensions, some mods in coding, uninstalling and re-installing numerous times, spitting in the wind while dancing a jig….none of those worked.
