Hello everyone,

Days are turning into nights much earlier now, yet we are not sleeping. Instead, today we would like to deliver our first 34 beta with a number of improvements, some of which include:

Turbo 2

Opera Turbo is an established and widely recognized method of received data compression and thus providing both data savings and faster response on slower connections. After an extended period of testing and verification, we have switched to the Turbo 2 model. This one, apart from being compliant across all devices, is particularly usable when your available Internet connection is  stable but slow. This change has been introduced server-wise with no browser frontend, however observant users might spot the improvement.

Discover is News

Our Discover feature is widely appreciated by more and more users. Thanks for that! Now, to improve this experience even further, we have started the changes by renaming Discover to News – as simple as that! You can expect more News changes in Developer stream very soon.

MSE – MP3 audio support

MSE Audio (audio/mpeg and audio/aac mimetypes) now works from within Opera, enabling playback from Google Play Music and similar services.

Share button on Mac

The support for the native Share button on Mac has been implemented. It is now possible to perform sharing from within the browser, using your favorite social network or community:

Mac Share button

Download manager dropdown improvements

Now, you are able to cancel the ongoing download using the “cancel” button on any download in progress which is visible in the downloads dropdown:

Cancel download button

The Chromium version is now 47.0.2526.35.

Known issues

We have fixed the majority of context menu issues which emerged after switching to 34 with the new Chromium version, but some of them still exist. We know about these and work on them.

For the full list of changes introduced in this beta, please see the changelog link.

Hi Aneta, thanks for the article, and congrats to the Developers on the promotion of the Opera 34 to the beta channel 😉

  • iosaddict

Extension icons not shown in private windows.

    • Aneta Reluga

Can you please provide an example of such extensions? I’m trying for several and they are all shown whenever the option ‘Allow in private mode’ is ticked. Thanks.

      • iosaddict

Simply launch private mode directly from taskbar and you will find ghostery, ublock (origin) aren’t showing.

        • Aneta Reluga

Can you please go to Extensions -> Extensions Manager (from the Opera Menu), then tick the option “Allow in private mode” for any extension you wish to be active in the private window, and then relaunch the private window and check if the problem persists? Thanks.

          • iosaddict

Yes, the problem still persists. I can tell the extension is working but their icons aren’t showing if you launch private mode directly from start menu or taskbar.

          • Aneta Reluga

One (hopefully last) question: what is you OS and version? It can be platform dependent. Thanks and sorry for almost repeating myself 🙂

          • iosaddict

            Windows 7 & Windows 10 x64.

          • Vux777

where exactly you don’t see extension icons in private window?
on tabs with opened extension settings like this?
edit: sry, something got bugged on screenshot
            http://prntscr.com/90sh3j
because on my side, they always open in normal window, no matter if I’m in private or not
same goes for internal extensions page

          • iosaddict

            It’s now confirmed as a bug. 🙂

      • Marko Koivuniemi

Interesting. At first I see same behaviour than iosaddict but when I checked “Allow in private mode” and then opened private window directly from taskbar icons shows just fine. ( ublock(origin) ) – I have Windows 10 x64 )

        • Aneta Reluga

Yeah, I checked two different blockers and one fun extension to have the coverage for both browser extensions and page extensions, and all work for me. Edit: I also added a sidebar extension, and it also works in privete mode. I feel helpless now.

        • iosaddict

make sure you close all Opera’s window and launch a new (fresh) private mode.

          • Marko Koivuniemi

Nice catch! If normal Window is not open and you start just private window icons are missing. But after normal window you do that again icons are there.

          • Aneta Reluga

Right there, thanks. Browser and sidebar extensions affected. Reporting.

          • iosaddict

It’s been happening for a while, I thought now is the best time to report it. 🙂

          • Aneta Reluga

And a nice one. Yes, it’s already reported, thanks. 🙂

  • LoverOfLife

Thanks for the update! Please, add support for Romania in News

DNA-44519 [Linux] Opera should load ffmpeg from chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

Hmm. Now If I not have chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra on my Linux (I not use any .deb based for now, so I also not have this package) I not have also H.264 support in YouTube…
Previous h.264 work fine on normal build in default in system FFMPEG. Now not…

    Maybe you can making this:

if in system we have chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra, opera use it, if not opera use default ffmpeh from system?

    • Łukasz Jagielski

You need newer chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra because chromium bumped their internal version. You can get the compatible one from this ffmpeg for example: https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta, the workaround with lib_extra is also still valid, but please make sure you have right libffmpeg there.

      • Angry Penguin

I try install Opera developer on my old notebook with Ubuntu. Look like it work with chromium-codedcs-ffmpeg-extra from this PPA. So I try also on my desktop PC with non .deb Linux. I think in this case should works download this libs, unpack and symlink to it or run opera with custom flags like this –zygote-preload-paths=/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/libffmpeg.so

Also I found issues. When I install Opera dev in my Ubuntu. I get opera icon in unity dash menu but I can’t run it! Click, double click not work. So I look at folder where opera is installed and run it manuall from binary. Opera run fine. And this create in Unity Dash another opera icon but now woking. So I have one entry not working and one working

So can anyone look into this issue?

        • Łukasz Jagielski

Hi, I think I saw once the problem you’ve encountered with unity launcher, but it never repeated again. If you know how to reproduce it or remember some special circumstances in which this happened please report a bug here https://bugs.opera.com/wizarddesktop/, we will take a look at this. About your first idea, it would be great to have proprietary codecs support out of the box, but no promises can be made here. Nevertheless, our license is very permissive when it comes to repackaging our Linux packages, so people can modify them and share with the Linux world 🙂 Regards, Łukasz

  • xirit64

For me the most important improvement is the chromium’s one: “Chrome no longer highlights the gaps between content when painting selections.”

    http://blog.chromium.org/2015/10/chrome-47-beta-idle-time-work-splash.html

    • SuperTommy

That took them some while. I don’t know if I should be impressed or not.

      • xirit64

yeah probably not, lol. But at least it’s there, some… years later 🙂

  • Kev87

Thanks for the first beta and the very long changelog!

  • Jason Coplen

Bookmarks importing doesn’t show the new bookmarks until after you close and restart the browser. Windows 10 64bit.

  • RCarvalho

Thank you for the update! Just one thing, though. The change in the right mouse context menu, when it comes to the dictionary selection for spell checking, now makes one travel to the settings page in order to change between languages, instead of performing the change straight from the context menu. This might seem like a nitpick, but when dealing with multiple languages, that you change between frequently, it becomes a nuisance. Would be cool to get the quick context menu change option back.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, there is still a possibility to change the language from context menu, nothing changed there. Simply go to Spelling and Grammar -> Show Spelling and Grammar and use the drop-down menu at the bottom to select the language.

      • RCarvalho

Hi, Kornelia. Thank you for the reply. However, I can’t seem to find the functionality you describe. Looked everywhere, including ‘Flags’. Since this last update all I get in the right mouse context menu is an option called ‘Language settings…’, which takes me to ‘Settings > Dictionaries’, where I can select the language I want to use for spell checking. Before the update this was possible straight from the right mouse context menu, in loco.

Where can I find more (technical) info regarding Turbo 2 (except that it’s – of course – better than it’s predecessor ;)) ? thx

    • escruting

This is supposed to be the developer version blogpost, right? Cause i’m not seeing it. No detailed explanation, no flags mentioned,…Changed the name of Discover….maybe you could tell us what you are working on on the News part of the development?

Make it worth to read please, it seems like you are doing it because you have to, not because you want it or want to make us want it….

(i’m speaking to the Opera guys, of course).

      • netwolf

Couldn’t agree more, looks rather like being written by the marketing dept. than by QA or dev members…

    • Vux777

      I’m not sure it’s better
more sites were broken on T2 (not sure how it is in last couple of weeks)

    • mikemanger

They posted a bit about it here: https://dev.opera.com/blog/opera-mini-11-modes/ – I’m assuming Turbo 2 is the same as ‘High-compression mode’ on the Android browser.

      • netwolf

Thank you for the link, but unfortunately it’s not very informative either. Also I don’t think you can really compare desktop and mobile WRT Turbo, as AFAIK rendering ist always done locally with desktop browsers, and it’s said that it is only a server-side change. Would be really nice to get some technical answers from an Opera person about the under the hood changes between Turbo 1 and Turbo 2, like what other compression technology, different libs etc. etc. …

  • DNA-40704 (extreme slowdown in tab cycling on Mac) is still present in this version. Can’t go above 20 tabs or so without tab cycling (using Ctrl+Tab) taking a second or three to switch, and it only gets worse with each additional tab afterwards. Until this is fixed, I’m having to stay at Opera 29.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Sorry for inconvenience. This bug is being examined now.

  • Cary Fries

While you’re working on those context menus, sort the search engines by title 🙂 Purdy please.

  • Alexander Evseev

I can’t find the bookmark share button on linux-64bit. Did you remove this feature?

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

This feature is no longer available.

  • Alex khomenock

Please add share button on windows 10/8.1/8

    • Marko Koivuniemi

Share is gone (except for Mac): “Phase 2 of shutting down share, remove all share code” I never used it anyway.

  • maartinez

MP4 videos not working again on ubuntu 🙁

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Please check if you’ve got chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package installed.

      • maartinez

Thanks for your answer. Yes, it is installed. ver. 45.0.2454.101-0ubuntu1.1201. It worked fine untill the update today

        • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

You need newer chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra because chromium bumped their internal version. You can get the compatible one from this ffmpeg for example: https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta

          • Angry Penguin

Can confirm it work. I use this lib pack from this repo but for chromium dev not beta and work fine.

BTW. Any hope for build this lib pack in Opera?

  • Stanislav Stratil

“Share button on Mac” I expect that this feature will also come to windows version, please make us able to turn it off, cause I dont know how everyone else, but I think that I will never use this feature.

If I want to share something, I can just copy paste url to my friends in skype. But if I want to share my bookmark folder? Cant do that anymore… Sorry but these are completely reversed decisions.

Bookmark sharing feature = neat, clever and unique… and you removed it
Webpage sharing feature = useless (at least for me) and you added it

Sorry for bad feedback, its from my view how I see it. Otherwise I like new Opera, and maybe its little late to say it, but your new logo is fantastic.

    • Aneta Reluga

Feedback is always welcome, whether good or bad, as long as it’s true to one’s reception and honest. Thank you.

    • SuperTommy

I don’t necessarily expect it to come to Windows. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but the share function is an OS X API.

It’s pretty useful for many if you think about it. You can share links to e.g. iMessage (SMS) which you can send to friends smartphones. Which saves you the time to go to your phone and get the link, and then send it to whoever. So I understand the effort from Opera to implement it. Unfortunately, not everything suits everyone.

  • jedy123

Can’t get the beta to update. It downloads the update and gives the relaunch button. When I restart the browser it is still v33 and starts downloading the update. After the 4th attempt it says Opera v33 your browser is up to date. I’m going to download the browser again directly from Opera and hopefully this this gives me the update.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks, one question – what OS? I think the manual update will do the job for you, but nevertheless I’d like to know the circumstances and try to spot the issue.

      • jedy123

Sorry, forgot to say OSX 10.9.5. The manual update worked. I’ve also found the relaunch button on any of the desktop browsers (dev/beta/stable) doesn’t update. I have to close/relaunch the browser and sometimes this doesn’t work first time.

        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for the info – we’ll investigate this.

  • Misiek Pysiek

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Someone earlier noticed (and I too) that sometimes quitting Opera doesn’t work as expected. Now I tested more and it could be related to FB. I tried to exit with Opera-menu or CTRL+SHIFT+X but nothing happened. But when I go to another non-FB -tab it worked instantly. And this case also opera-menu -option seems not to work or works slowly. I have uBlock Origin active and V7 Session etc. I have quite heavy session file – almost 19 MB.

  • Kev87

Since the new logo is implemented in the desktop browser, the menu button is not completely at the top on windows. There is a little bit space between the end of your screen and the top of the menu-button, as I marked with the arrow in this screenshot: http://imgur.com/6kmVo7u . The little space was not there with the old menu button style. I also don’t know if this also happens in the mac and the linux version or on other windows versions, but it is there on my windows 10 .

    • jedy123

Mac doesn’t have a dropdown menu due to the way OSX works and we have a traditional menu bar – thank god!

  • xirit64

So, ehm, “suggestions” feature from O34 developer got axed?

    • Aneta Reluga

Please note that whatever happens in developer is… well, developer. Looking at your entry, you aren’t much in love with this feature, however, if you dig deeper, you can actually spot that this feature is controlled via #extended-suggestions (now disabled).

      • Vux777

still can’t get rid of those pre-installed tiles…
        renders this feature useless

      • xirit64

Hi, thanks, I haven’t searched for it, I thought it was working in developer for quite some time so I thought you would bring it over to the beta 🙂 So this means it’s very far away from seeing it in the stable, ok. Personally, if it would show me my Speed Dial items I would like it, but not advertisements or 3rd party-Opera suggestions.

      • escruting

Looking at the blog entry it seems that we have to dig deeper too find what the browser is about, you cant tell us if you disabled a flag by default? This is a developers place for some things and not for others…

  • LoverOfLife

Regarding Speed dial: Middle mouse click and left click have the same functions on a folder. I want to click the wheel and open all sites in that folder. Is it possible to have that ?

    • xirit64

I agree on that, I also don’t understand why Ctrl+Click and Shift+Click don’t work either while they work for the other items.

  • nutcracker

Why there is no mouse gesture for scrolling through tabs?

    • Kai Ockendorf

That can mean only one thing: INVASION! Sorry, little Star Wars joke 🙂 Yeah, this mouse gesture (right mouse + scroll wheel) is a must in my eyes! This is one of the old features I miss the most. Vivaldi has it already & I’m wondering why it is so hard to implement it for Opera!! Please bring it back to make a lot of users happy :)))

      • Stanislav Stratil

And I would like to get rocker gestures for it. (right click + left click = switch to tab on left and vice versa).

  • Rinne Tensei

No share button for win10 ?? I would actually like opera to automatically sync and replace the default SD tiles with synced ones, the current implementation is kind of creepy if one is fresh installing it !

    • Leonardo Gomes

Which share button? If you mean bookmarks share, it was removed a while ago once the service is being descontinued.

      • Olli

He means like on OS X. On OS X share buttons are quite common, but not on Windows.

  • Gloriam

New scroll bar in the speed dial, nice! 😀

I really like it, any chance it being implemented browser-wide?

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Scrollbar? Your monitor is too small.

      • Gloriam

No it’s not, I like bigger icons and there’s a lot of wasted space including the massive google search bar.

        Both on 15,6″ and 24″ 1080p.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I have never seen any scrollbars in the speed dials and you can switch the google search bar off (“Power user settings”). I have 10 speed dial folders in a row and still a lot of space. So no need for a scrollbar.

          • Gloriam

You’re telling me I can turn everything above the speed dial folders? http://imgur.com/doUvaIy

Haven’t seen the option anywhere, but if it’s possible.. that’d be great.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Go on the settings page (“CTRL-F12”) and enter the Konami Code (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konami_Code). Then you are a power user and have more possibilities.

          • Gloriam

            Thanks for the tip!

  • When will we are going to be able to sort extensions on the Omnibar? Chromium does it, Chrome does it, but Opera users have to employ “delete, insert, reinstall” method of sorting. That and the absence of synching extensions keeps me a Chrome user. Add those two things and I’ll make the switch.

  • あれい

News does not work in Japan. Dev version does too.

  • Dwight Fidler

Latest version of Opera will not work on Mac (Snow Leopard) and the old version won’t run Silverlight anymore. My Mac is my Netflix machine via Opera. Now I have to move elsewhere.

  • eshepelyuk

Java is not working in 34. In fact Java eneabling needs some magic each time new beta version of Opera is released, this is a bit frustrating :((

    • BK

Java support is being suspended with O34.

      • eshepelyuk

What does it mean “suspended” ? Does Opera plan to stop supporting Java, as Chrome and FF did ?

        • Leonardo Gomes

Since the support was (or is being) removed in Chromium, all Chromioum based browsers, like Opera, will drop the support sooner or later.

          • eshepelyuk

Leonardo, are you Opera member , or you have a link to Opera team blog that contain this announcement ?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, i don’t work for Opera.

I don’t think there is an announcement about it here but there are some in Chromium blog, like this one and this one.

make the context menu in the opera as white as in windows 10

When you are about to delete a device folder from the “Other Speed Dials” branch in desktop Opera’s bookmarks view, you receive the following warning:

Removing a device folder will remove all the Speed Dial entries on that device. Do you really want to remove this device folder?

That cannot be true, can it? That would be a dangerously “adventurous” implementation, wouldn’t it? Anybody would expect the device to vanish from the installation the is sitting at, an perhaps (I wouldn’t!) from the sync servers – but never anyone would imagine to destruct data on other devices!

To have removed only locally cached foreign data and then locally remembering to “hide” the device would be the strategy I’d propose for the action of “deleting” a device in “Other Speed Dials”. (The list of “hidden” devices should be manageable.)

Another suitable approach could be to additionally wipe the data on the sync server – so if you use the removed device again in future, it will re-upload its data to the sync server, if you keep sd-sync switched on on that device. Using that strategy you could also abstain from the “hiding” action proposed above.

BTW on Opera for Android the German language confirmation prompt is very ambiguous, referring to deletion on “diese[m]” (“this”) device, which would remove entries “vom” (“from the”) device – where the second time you probably mean the other device and not the device the user is having his hands on (which I considered very unlikely, unless I encountered the English prompt on the desktop).

what is the diffrence between turbo2 and old turbo

  • OldHickory30

Love the new “share” feature, problem is several apps checked, are not appearing under the share options with OSX 101.11.1 including my email client. Suggestions?

  • a) Opening a folder with more than 10 [? Lowest number I have seen this is 12] gives a dialogue if I want to open that many pages. Sadly it misses a checkbox ‘don’t ask anymore’.

    b) missing the spell-checking entries in the context-menu for text input fields is a known issue, I guess?

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks, b) was indeed known and already fixed. Pushing a) for evaluation.

  • qternet

Ctrl+Tabbing is so terrible in new versions. Can you at least put a switch into options? I need to switch tabs quickly not choose them from some small menu.

    New update – Opera beta 34.0.2036.16 😉
