Hi,

Last week, we didn’t have a developer update because we wanted to focus on the Opera 49 initial beta release which included the snapshot editor. However, it doesn’t mean we didn’t spend any time working on Opera 50. Today’s build includes features and fixes for all three platforms.

Tab’s context menu is more functional

Items in the tab’s context menu were cleaned up and grouped into related sections while receiving new actions.

Reopening closed tabs and windows became easier. “Reopen Last Closed Tab” moved to the bottom of the list and can change to “Reopen Last Closed Window,” depending on what was closed last. “Reload” and “Reload All Tabs” are two new functions to quickly refresh your current browsing session. The latter will ask for your confirmation if you have more than 10 tabs opened.

Improved unit converter

Unit converter is getting positive reviews from the press and users. Today it is becoming even better as we’ve added support for millimeters [mm] to be converted into inches [in].

In addition, there’s also support for dimensions. This means, starting today, you’ll be able to convert the dimensions of a 10 x 10″ picture frame or a 10 x 50 x 25 mm collectible toy car.

More emojis in snapshot editor

Snapshot editor was unveiled together with Opera 49 initial beta. Today’s developer build has all the same features and has been enriched with additional emojis.

Highlight of other changes and fixes that are included in this build:

  • [Mac] Part of tab was not clickable.
  • [Mac] Cmd + Shift + M didn’t hide communicator window.
  • [Mac] Pinch to zoom was not working.
  • [Mac] Private mode updated.
  • [Mac touchbar] Mask-icons didn’t work.
  • [Win, HiDPI] Black frame around drown down list.
  • [Win, HiDPI] Search-Copy pop-up badly rendered.
  • [Win, HiDPI] Title bar didn’t look good in dark mode.
  • [Linux] Opera didn’t start on Debian if package chromium-widevine was installed.
  • [Linux] Black border on sidebar communicator striked back on Intel graphic GPU.

Chromium version 63.0.3218.0.
Check the changelog for the full report.

Known issue:

  • DNA-64787: Crash loop after starting Opera with some Sync sessions
  • DNA-64808: Unable to open custom Speed Dials (added by user)

  • Sidebar Hangouts? Please? 🙂

    • Ewa

Hi, We plan to add to sidebar most popular communicators, stay tuned 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

Stop adding spam! Implement general webpanels instead!

        • Ewa

For now we don’t plan this feature. Have a nice day 🙂

          • Nekomajin43

That’s the problem. Spam must not be tolerated.

          • Ewa

Everyone is welcome to post their suggestions and we consider all of them, but for every user different feature can be useful.

          • Nekomajin43

You can not satisfy everyone’s needs by manually adding messengers. And for most of the users they are just spam. With webpanels, each user would be able to add their own messengers.

          • Hector MA

Spam is a mail related term. Not at all applicable here.
Your constant rants are close tough.

          • Nekomajin43

Spam is unwanted content. This stuff falls into this category.

          • Hector MA

            Don’t use it.

          • Nekomajin43

It is there on the sidebar by default. I have to turn them off.

      • Yay, can’t wait 🙂

  • variovent

    Speed Dial not launching sites.
Why do you release builds without doing even a basic checkout?

    • Sebastian

Please familiarize yourself with the software development process. Developer stream is not intended for daily browsing. It is provided for developers (as the name suggests) and enthusiasts who are not afraid of some bumps in the road. If you are so surprised by the fact that something may not work, please use (again, as the name suggests) stable stream.

      • Still… it’s a major major feature of Opera, weird that they released the version with such a fundamental bug. It’s gonna be a hell of a week having no dial… =/

      • variovent

Sebastian, I was expecting on this kind of reply, but in my opinion Developing stage is not equal with not working. This is not a hidden bug, it’s major feature, it’s the start page of the browser and it indicates Opera did not quality checked at all this release.
When you GO PUBLIC with a developer, alpha, beta release, you should run at least some basic verification. Otherwise, one day a developer release will leach password manager data in plain text and your excuse will be “please familiarize yourself with the software development process”.

        • We do not claim that developers builds are fully usable each time. We do test each build before release and make sure that it’s in condition to be worth pushing to our users. This is web browser and we make sure that it’s doing it’s basic functionality. Even so when we find issues not all of them are considered blockers. Those conditions are quite low for developer channel. We use it to test new features and possibly catch serious regressions. If we would block each release due to issues in our major features we would probably have to close whole developer branch.

          • Hector MA

Some years ago you used to put a big red legend, stating:

“WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.”

            You shoudn’t have dropped it.

        • Sebastian

I have an impression that you did not fully understand what I wrote. I have not yet written that verification has not taken place. Your assumption that no verification has been made, based on a single defective functionality, is groundless without knowledge of how it actually looks. Once again, using the developer channel, one has to bear in mind that something may simply not work. Sometimes it happens and it should not be particularly astonishing.

        • Hector MA

Go back to page one of the main Desktop Blog, red what’s in red:

          http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2013/01/twelvethirteen/

          It’s still valid you know?

    • Ewa

Hi, thank you for your comment. We already fixed it, so with next Developer update there should be no issues 🙂

      • DaZung

Also, starting with the last Developer Update, I’m unable to edit Speeddials inside a folder – the edit box opens under the folder popup.

        • Ewa

          Thanks, reported

        • Ewa

It seems it’s fixed already 🙂 so both fixes will be in next Developer update

    • Hector MA

      Development should ring some bells.

Not mean for regular usage. Not their mistake you don’t get it.

  • MrEasy

    Thanks for the update.
Strange issue though: I have 13 entries on speed-dial. Now only No. 3 is working – all others do not react at all when clicked. Adding new ones shows the same: no reaction (besides mighty No. 3)

    • Ewa

Hi, thanks for reporting this. Fix is already done and will be available with next Developer update.

      • Matheus Bombonato

        Please, release that quickly! 🙂

      • Ralf Brinkmann

        Thursday, please!

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Hi! After installing this new version, Opera started completely empty. All my tabs were closed. I have tried two times (W10x64, Operax64).

    • MrEasy

Same here – warning about that would have been good

Edit: Every restart seems to clear them 🙁

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Around 60 tabs in the same order as before? I want this to be fixed first.

Edit: Ok, I have tried that out. After hyperventilating a little I could open all my saved tabs (“Save tabs as quick dial folders”) in one go from my speed dial folder.

        • Hans Hansen

Cannot confirm on Win10x64 v1709. Sync is disabled.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

But what should sync be good for if I disable it? I want to have the same open tabs on my smartphone as on my desktop pc.

          • Hans Hansen

You’re right, but this channel is called “developer” and not “stable” 😉

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes, and we are trying to find out, what not works. And this is a major problem for me. And a very new one.

          • Ewa

Seems to be a sync issue – bug reported

          • Ralf Brinkmann

            Thank you!

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I can confirm that. After restart again everything lost.
        W10x64
        Operax64
        Sync enabled

        • Кostadin

Hi Ralf, same setup, no tabs lost (only 8 though, 4 pinned, 4 normal.)

          • Ralf Brinkmann

            Sync enabled?

          • Кostadin

            yep

      • MrEasy

De- and then re-selecting the “On start” – “Continue where I left” option resolved the issue for me – tabs resurrected on restart.

    • Ewa

Hi, do you have sync enabled?

      • Ralf Brinkmann

        Yes.

  • Marek

The problem with animated wallpaper in the speeddial is still here (but not so frequently). Maybe the https://addons.opera.com/pl/wallpapers/details/elvenar/ is corrupted? But before updating, it was working well…

However, there is problem (probably well known from previous versions) with the menu when using Display scale – 150%, as is recommended for my second screen). The menu is collapsed and opens in the left-middle of the screen with only few letters of each menu item (“Hist…”, “Pob…”, “Zak…”).

    • Ewa

Hi, yes you’re right, it seems that this wallpaper’s bug – other wallpapers are working fine.

The second issue is already reported, thank you for your comment 🙂

  • Ghirahim

NOOOOOOO!!!! I had like 20 tabs opened and when I reopened Opera, there were none left! How can I recover them now? Also I can’t open like 50% of my speed dials. I can click 50 times and it just doesn’t work.

    • xirit64

About #1 from the history I’d say 😛
      About #2 it’s a bug http://disq.us/p/1mvp6zl

      • Ghirahim

Crap, it happened three times since then. This build isn’t safe at all.

  • Hans Hansen

regarding the dimension converter – it doesn’t work in this constellation: https://abload.de/img/bettw_opera_dimzrpe9.png
(two times “cm” instead of just in the end)

    • Yes, X [format] x Y [format] isn’t supported yet.

  • Nekomajin43

If you work on tab handling, it’s time to implement a warning on window close function. We can pin individual tabs to prevent accidental close, but something must be done with windows. This is a very important feature, because we do more and more stuff in the browser, and whole sessions can be lost because of a misplaced click. You can reopen the tabs, but it won’t restore the progress in applications, for example games or editors.

  • xirit64

Nice, now the only thing that is missing (before working on the tab stacks) is the “Close tabs to the left” menu entry 🙂

  • Rudric

    Sidebar? Sidebar? Onebar?

  • L33t4opera

Hi Maciej, thanks for the new update, and fixes 😉
By the way: "Winsows" in #save-as-pdf looks like a typo.

    New flags:
    – opera:flags#save-as-pdf
Enables "Save as PDF" option in the Opera > Page menu on Windows/Linux or File menu on Mac. To avoid Opera's crash, please first enable the flag, before you assign, and try the Keyboard shortcuts > Save page as PDF.

    – opera:flags#tabs-in-cbd (Chromium specific for the time being)
Enables a basic and an advanced tab for the Clear Browsing Data dialog.

    – opera:flags#enable-parallel-downloading
Enable parallel downloading toaccelerate download speed.

    • xirit64

Save as pdf sounds pretty awesome, and it was about time for something like that 🙂 Thanks.

      • Hans Hansen

Is there a difference to the pdf printer coming pre-installed on Win10 (“Microsoft Print to PDF”)?

        • xirit64

Haven’t tested it myself but I’d assume it’s about the convenience of not having to browse various printers to find the Microsoft’s print to pdf, or any other’s pdf program.

        • Flag is still off which means that it’s even not developer quality ready. But you can give it a go. Yes it’s different than generating PDF via print dialog because we’re not using print layout, PDF will have exactly what you have on screen. You can try out blogs.opera.com or wikipedia.

          • Hans Hansen

Thank you for this information. I tried it.
You even can switch between print style and screen style. Screen style looks very promising. Good work.
But print style is a total mess in contrast to a third party pdf printer like Adobe PDF. But as you said it is still in development.
            Opera PDF screen style: https://abload.de/img/screenshot16xwpz4.png
            Opera PDF print style: https://abload.de/img/screenshot17o5qqy.png
            Adobe PDF printer: https://abload.de/img/screenshot186io0h.png

          • I’m not sure if print still will be included. Glad you like the screen style. If you test it around, you can post findings here.

          • Hans Hansen

I think it will satisfy those crying for whole-page-snapshot-tool, because it’s better than this due to the ability to edit text and pictures in pdfs, unlike in pngs: https://abload.de/img/screenshot192fq51.png

          • thanks

          • Nekomajin43

No, it won’t. Handling images is much more easier in most of the cases.

          • Hans Hansen

Then you haven’t worked with Adobe Acrobat Pro DC or you have different use cases…

          • Nekomajin43

Ok, try to post PDFs on social media sites!

          • Hans Hansen

As I said you have different use cases. But just speak for yourself and not for others. 🙂
I can’t imagine why I should post a whole page on social media sites. I’ve never done that before and couldn’t think of any situation in the future. On Facebook, for instance, the image would show up very small when people open it, and most people would not know how to make it fit to screen.. So I would rather post a Dropbox link or sth. like this (with PDF). At least you can attach PDFs in FB Messenger resp. WhatsApp.
The only situation I would export a whole page when browsing is to save the website as a means of evidence, e.g. when you sign a contract via internet or you buy something on eBay and want to archive the page. And I’ve never been in the situation that I wanted to edit this page afterwards (because of the archiving purpose). And in my case PDF is far more better than PNG.

          • Nekomajin43

You have just explained why these are two distinct features.

          • Hans Hansen

No, I have explained that exporting a whole page as a pdf fulfills my needs better than exporting it to a png and that I see no reason to post a whole page on social media sites. I talk about MY needs and you can talk about YOUR needs. I have no problem with that.

          • Nekomajin43

I don’t have a problem with your needs either. But you said it would solve the problems of those who want full page capture, and I said why it won’t. In some cases it can be handy, but does not substitute the other one in general.

And still, I don’t really see why full page capture is not implemented. Vivaldi, Firefox and a dozen of extensions can do it. It must not be an unsolvable problem.

          • Hans Hansen

That was only my assumption, but if you tell me it’s not the case and you have other needs – it is ok. Now I know better. That’s why it is good to talk about this issue.

          • Hans Hansen

I’m not able to export websites like http://www.ebay.de or Aliexpress, nothing happens when you click “Save to PDF..”. But I’m not complaing about alpha features! 🙂

          • 🙂 we’ll use them for internal testing

  • KarenArzumanyan

Very need “Tab Grouping” like Opera 12!

  • ga_pechorin

unit converter makes the difference with other browsers, it is really usefull and natural.

although i would like you add the original symbols of currencies, like 元 for chinesse yuan, which is the most used way.

    • Thanks, we’ll look into it!

  • Angry Penguin

This is second 50 dev build where I can’t minimize Opera windows after maximize. Tested on two Linux machines Ubuntu 17.04×64(deb) and Magia5x64 (rpm).

    • Ewa

Hi, it’s already reported, waiting for fixing

      • Angry Penguin

        Thanks 🙂

  • Regnas

Circle and rectangle for the snapshot editor please… 🙂

  • Leonardo Gomes

Anyone else experiencing NSL on some pages, like this one and Vimeo’s?

    • Hector MA

      No.

      • Leonardo Gomes

        Thanks. What OS?

        • Hector MA

          Win 10 x64. Creators Update.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

What do you mean? Google and Wikipedia tell me, that NSL is a “National Security Letter”.

      • Hans Hansen

😉 NSL = “Never stops loading”

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Oh! No, I didn’t have this. I only noticed, that sometimes Youtube videos need longer than usual to start playing.

          • Hans Hansen

I also have noticed this, but in stable channel. Sometimes the YT video loading circle is moving and moving but nothing happens. Sometimes I only see a black screen and a few seconds later the video starts playing. But it is not always the case. I couldn’t figure out the reason..

          • Leonardo Gomes

What OS? BTW, no problems with YouTube here.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

My OS is Windows 10×64. The problem with Youtube does not appear with every video, only sometimes. Then the video screen stays black for a longer time (without any control elements) before it starts to play.

    • patkoscsaba

Yes. Especially on MacOS High Sierra. It happens on Linux as well, especially with Google Play Music, Google Inbox, Google Keep. Sometimes the whole page breaks into pieces and white boxes. Refresh, or browser restart helps somewhat, but after a couple of hours, or even less, the issue is back.
      Reported as bug yesterday.

    • Vux777

      I do on some sites
      on IMDB eg. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4857264/

      • Hans Hansen

I can confirm it on this site, Win10x64 v1709
Btw: good Spanish movie, i gave it a 7 out of 10. I can recommend it.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Can you check if disabling operq://flags#browser-side-navigation solves the problem?

        • Hans Hansen

Yes, it solved the problem. *thumbs up*

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Thanks for checking.

        • Vux777

          yes

    • With this build chromium flag opera://flags/#browser-side-navigation got enabled by default. This can have effect on various navigations or page loading. We are currently actively bugfixing issues and I suppose so is chromium.

      • SiMcarD

What does it involve disabling it?

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, I’d like to ask you to fill a survey to somehow quantify the feature requests: https://goo.gl/forms/RtwV9af9Ot3I7waB2

We have passed 300 answers! Thanks for everyone who participated.

Already implemented features from the list:
    – bookmarks export
    – expanding the number of recently closed tabs in the tab menu
    – unit converter
    – screen capture tool

    Currently being implemented:
    – the ability to rearrange extension icons

    New requests on the list:
    – capture full page (not just the visible area)
    – inline translator in the search popup
    – paste option in the search popup (in editable fields)

If you have already submitted your votes, just open the link again, and you can vote for the new additions.

I know it’s not representative, but it may help to show the trends and the top most wanted features. We’ve got some positive words from the devs, no promises though.

If you find anything missing from the list, please comment here or in the forum: https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1883544/opera-browser-feature-survey

    • Hector MA

Looks a lot as an Opera 12 Wish list, don’t waste your time.

      • Nekomajin43

        Don’t waste your time replying.

    • Rick Bergmann

The tab stacking feature is still the one I miss most from Opera 12. Good to see it in the survey.

  • Regnas

Bug: Some speeddials are not working. If you create a new speeddial it doesn’t work, even some that were already there are not working. Win 10

    • Ewa

Hi, already reported and fixed, will work correct in next Developer.

      • Regnas

        Thanks.
Another thing, how can I force reload a page from scratch, I mean rebuilding the cache… In the past I used to do ctrl+f5 or ctrl+clicking in the reload button, but now it doesn’t work anymore… when I ctrl+click in the reload button it opens a new tab with the same page… also deleting the cache in the preferences seems to do nothing either…

        • xirit64

It should be Shift+F5 or Ctrl+F5 or both…

          • Regnas

I tried all possible combinations but no luck…. Seems like an overlooked bug..

      • Artur Łukasz

        one week with this bug?
        autoupdate sucks.

        • SiMcarD

I hope in a quick fix in the next days.

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Welcome to developer channel. 😀

    • SiMcarD

In my case no one works.

  • Geazi Soares

Any chance Opera has more options with mouse gestures in the future?

  • NanoPi

I wish currency converter would support currency names like “3000 yen” the same way it supports “3000 jpy”

  • Hector MA

Why we don’t have the option anymore to add a Speed Dial out of the current tab?

    Instead I have to :

    1. Drag the tab to a new window or close the rest of tabs, otherwise I put many non intended Speed Dials that later I have to delete.
    2. Drag the Speed Dial out of the new folder to put where I intended to.
    3. Close that window or reopen all the tabs you close.

Also it’d be great to have a page thumbnail when adding Speed Dials, not an icon.

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can right click on the page and use ‘add to Speed Dial’ or you can use the heart icon, what also gives you a thumbnail of the page.

      • Hector MA

        Heart is for Bookmarks.

        • Leonardo Gomes

And Speed Dial is part of Bookmarks. 🙂

  • Leonardo Altarugio

Add the option to open file in downloads. Please

    • Przemek Kudła

Doesn’t the double-click work for you?

      • Leonardo Altarugio

Unfortunately not. For example when I’m going to download a RAR file I just want to open it and not save it.

  • Biohazard

    Private Tab?

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t see it coming, unless maybe if other major browsers start implementing it.

  • PakSae

How about remove duplicated in Recently closed?

  • Leonid Frolov

Win10 x32 – Speed Dial does not work! If I try to open site via context menu – only another speed dial tab appers.

  • patkoscsaba

MacOS High Sierra: High CPU usage after start (100% of one CPU core) until I click each and every restored tab and wait for it to load. After all tabs are loaded, usage is back to <10% CPU.

    • patkoscsaba

So, it seems to be related to the NSL (never stop loading) issue. When I have the spinner on the tab, it starts to use a lot of CPU. Both the Opera process and the WindowServer process has increased CPU usage. As soon as the spinner stops, things become closer to normal.

    • We already have fixed this issue internally. Will be available with next developer update.

  • Regnas

Some webpages never finishes loading… Causing high cpu usage.. 🙁

  • loligans

In addition to the new tab changes, a “Rename Tab” option would be super convenient for tabs that stay open for a long time. OR multiple similar tabs. The new name of the Renamed Tab would stick until the domain name in the URL changed.

  • Night Man

    Finally a reload option ..

    • Two of those actually 🙂

  • Spiryts

http://www.oleole.pl page won’t load for the last 2-3 opera updates
    http://pl.tinypic.com/r/2192ihv/9
page work just fine on ie, chrom, ff etc.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t know what I should see, but there is a page that opens here. And it looks the same in Opera, Firefox and Google Chrome here.
      W10x64
      Operax64

    • Tina

Hi. Confirmed. Reproduced only on Dev stream. Temporary solution is to open Opera with –disable-http2

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Ah, that’s the reason why I could open the page. I have this switch still enabled.

  • xirit64
