Welcome,

Today’s developer build offers custom extension placement in the toolbar, allowing you the freedom to arrange your extensions. As with tabs, if you are one to have an abundance of extensions in Opera, this will be a handy way of organising your browser’s tools. Previously, extensions were ordered in accordance to their installation date.

We are pressing on to fix HiDPI issues while also grooming Opera’s appearance for the upcoming macOS High Sierra update. These tasks make up the bulk of today’s changelog, but you’ll find other important changes in the update:

  • [HiDPI] Checkboxes were misplaced and badly scaled.
  • [HiDPI] Auto-filing was totally misplaced after DPI change.
  • [HiDPI] Dragging a tab makes screen flashing after DPI change.
  • [HiDPI] O-menu’s context menu’s borders were missing.
  • [Mac High Sierra] Search popup font was too dark.
  • [Mac High Sierra] No animation on tab hover was shown.
  • [Mac High Sierra] Broken drop target animation in extensions sidebar.
  • [Mac] Sound indicator and mute tab in tab menu were not accessible.
  • [Mac] It was impossible to activate tabs of a certain width.
  • Don’t show hint about new feature – dark theme.
  • Fix for Linux crash when enabling VPN.
  • “Get more wallpapers” always linked to English version of Opera add-ons page.

Chromium updated to 62.0.3198.0.
Check the changelog for the full report.

Known issues

On macOS, the removal of suggestions in the address bar is not aligned with the Windows and Linux implementation. Also, it doesn’t adjust properly to theme changes.

Nice but…. I waiting for added Notes with synchronization!

  • Eugene B.

Great new feature! Thanks guys! 🙂

  • Great, I missed it. Thanks!

  • KarenArzumanyan

We need a grouping of tabs. Instead of sorting icons.

  • Nekomajin43

We want to move every item on the toolbar, not just the extensions.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Finally! This feature was so difficult to implement that it took over 5 years!

  • inDigazzZ

Good, but give the opportunity to leave the necessary number of icons on the panel itself, and hide the rest behind the expander.
Like in Chrome, where i can resize address field and thereby control the amount of visible icons.

    • Nekomajin43

      It’s a must!

Guys, I’d like to ask you to fill a survey to somehow quantify the feature requests: https://goo.gl/forms/RtwV9af9Ot3I7waB2

We have passed 250 answers! Thanks for everyone who participated.

Some features (bookmarks export, expanding the number of recently closed tabs in the tab menu) are landed in th stable branch. Others (unit converter, screen capture tool, the ability to rearrange extension icons) are already being developed. (They will be removed from the list once they reach the stable branch.)

Loading pinned tabs from previous session in startup is new on the list. If you have already submitted your votes, just open the link again, and you can vote for the new additions.

I know it’s not representative, but it may help to show the trends and the top most wanted features. We’ve got some positive words from the devs, no promises though.

If you find anything missing from the list, please comment here or in the forum: https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1883544/opera-browser-feature-survey

    1. Can’t drag a window or double tap to maximize using touchscreen, detaching of tabs with fingers also almost broken.
    2. ‘Tab menu’ still has scaling bugs with borders on the top and down (HiDPI, 150% system scale). Same goes with some other fly-out menus (VPN, Battery saver, etc.) Also drop-down menus in settings show black lines.
    3. Long tap on attached sidebar -> context menu always out of the screen a little.
    4. The new ‘Easy setup’ pane scrolls horizontally (with touchpad or touchscreen). And has some misplacing.
    5. Move your cursor at ‘Recently closed’ section in the ‘Tab menu’ -> little black arrow disappears.
    6. Open private window, close regular window, try to open regular window again from the context menu of the Windows taskbar (right-click Opera icon on the taskbar -> ‘New window’), nothing will happen.
    7. Side context menus still misplaced.
    8. Long tap to context menu somewhere on ‘Speed Dial’ -> menu will appear below the finger, when on the regular web pages it’s above, like it should.

    i5-4300U, Windows 10 x64, 150% system scale.

    1. Please add the bookmark bar bug to Known issues (crash when click on folder).
    2. https://deb.opera.com/ is down.

Good thing I lived long enough to see moveable extension buttons. I can finally die in peace once it gets to stable version.
If you have a request for an old good or a new cool feature – hurry up, so your kids might have a chance to see it implemented in their lifetime XD

Hi, it’s already known issue, reported by user Alexs here, and confirmed by Kornelia from the Opera here.

    • Kornelia

      Yes, we’re working on this.

I still have Flash plugin issues.

Hi @disqus_PYrrTAyTfk:disqus, @ralfbrinkmann:disqus, regarding security of the plugin, please make sure, that you have the latest version (currently 27.0.0.130).

      • Ralf Brinkmann

The same result. It does not work. I can not activate Flash, when I try to play a video.

        • Leonardo Gomes

It doesn’t work even if you add the site as an exception?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I didn’t try that out. In Firefox, Vivaldi and even in the newest Google Chrome (Version 63.0.3213.3 (Offizieller Build) dev (64-Bit)) it runs without any extra permission. The same with Opera beta. No problems there.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Maciej, thanks for the update, and fixes 😉

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Some problems with this developer version of Opera:
    – I uploaded images to my “Magenta” (Telekom) cloud and could not copy the download link in the pop up window (for sharing). It was like a picture, not like text.
    – After restarting Opera many tabs (out of 30) are loading and loading and loading. It doesn’t matter if “loading background tabs” in the settings is enabled or not (somebody else reported this).
    – Sometimes in a chat with Facebook Messenger there are black bars or backgrounds below the text or behind the text in the Messenger window.
    – Flash is still not working (already reported).
I think I have to go back to the last beta.

Crap. Much more useful would be the ability to group tabs. Is there a chance? As in the old opera …

That was hard on the eyes. Paragraphs and syntax are your friends.

  • let the speed dial background follow the desktop wallpaper, plz
or try to make it like it was “transparent”

    • Using desktop’s wallpaper in Opera is something we’re considering. There are some requests about it… but no promises.

Something Neon style would be interesting.

Sorry that is off topic but Opera for android will release updates or it was abandoned, the latest update in February version 42 and more there were no updates, Mobile team blog can not leave comments if not difficult answer my question.
I like Opera I use both on the computer and on the smartphone thanks for your hard work but I would like to see that Opera for android evolved like the Desktop Opera
Opera mini for android is developing, but this mini is not a full-fledged browser, I prefer Opera for android

Lately they published 42.9.2246.119956 (for my device, at least), where they introduced a strange fake-iOS color theme and replaced that gerbil* (or what the friendly animal was, that greeted from the circle icon above the main menu) with an Opera-O – but the gerbil sporadically still shows up. 😉

      __
      * I wonder, if Opera bought a code base (including the comic strip gerbil) from a far eastern software company for their Opera/Android…?

  • Ghirahim

    Converter doesn’t work.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Which one? And how it doesn’t work?

        It works now. Strange.

Arranging extension icons is a sought after functionality for many. Thank you for bringing it forward. However I do hope that development of features that greatly affects and eases browsing & multitasking are on track for the future.

  • Anthony Nelson

The same result. It does not work. I can not activate Flash, when I try to play a video.

  • Nekomajin43

Any word on the webextension platform? Will you switch?

    • Rudric

      Benefits? downsides?

      • Nekomajin43

It is the standard version of the Chromium navigator extension platform. There are some minor differences, but basically it is the same. The point is to make the same extension with the same code work in every major browser, including Edge and Firefox.

You can read more here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/Chrome_incompatibilities

        • Rudric

I would of thought WebExt would work @ Firefox..

  • Regnas

Why the fake animation? lol…. arranging extension icons doesn’t work like that.. lol…

  • Stefan Ivanović

Is this an uncredited feature or bug? I found that some pages I regularly visit is too zoomed on my home laptop, like it is synchronising zoom level from my way bigger screen I use at work (where many wab pages are much more zoomed in). Both Opera Developer portable (latest version, 49.0.2711.0), home x64, work x86

I jumped to vivaldi for now until they fix it…. can’t whitelist every site in the world just to play flash….. 😉

Same applies when you have duplicates. You don’t know where they are 🙂

    Should I submit a Feature request ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      You already did it. 🙂

Is that true?! Finally… Ok, I haven’t installed any new extension for a long time… (a year? or two?) but when you create a new profile want to check some new extensions, it’s really handy…
