Hi,

This is the last Opera beta update before we announce Opera 45 stable. Here are some short highlights:

  • Less irritating auto-update notification on macOS (system notification will be limited to once a week)
  • Fixed Ctrl+Click crash while opening a new tab (macOS)
  • Internal icons are now updated in the address bar dropdown list

All the details are listed in the changelog, as usual.

Nice! Waiting for O45 Stable! 🙂

  • Cryio

Gonna test this on PC and Surface Pro 4, to see if most issues I reported were addressed ^.^

  • redfox

I hope the Stable release will have an option to turn off the Reborn UI and switch to the classic v44 interface completely, including original folder colors and tab styling in Windows 7. I still don’t see such possibility in the changelog.

    • Jamie

Yes, I have been hoping it can be turned off as well. It’s such a waste of screen space to have the vertical bar there all the time. If not, guess I’ll have to go try Vivaldi or Firefox again 🙁

      • redfox

I am of the same opinion. As I wrote above, they don’t offer such option in the current Stable version. I’ll stay with O44 as long as the VPN will remain supported in it.

  • Юлия

Are you going to promote this to stable channel with this issue?
    https://i.imgur.com/CmHN6ka.jpg

    • This “issue” has been present in Opera and other browsers since forever. This happens with a two or more monitor setup, while watching video in full screen and having the monitor that the video is on out of focus.

      • Юлия

This is an Opera only issue and it started with 45.0.2545.0. Builds prior to that one do not have this issue. Nor FireFox 53.0.2 or Chromium 60.0.3092.0. This happens with a single monitor setup and it’s Windows 7 only. Also reproducible on 10 LTSB1607 in 7 compatbility mode.

        • “This is an Opera only issue and it started with 45.0.2545.0”

          Thats absolutely false.

          • Юлия

Chrome, Chromium and Opera 45.0.2539.0 and lower don’t have that issue.

What about previous versions of Chromium?

          • Юлия

Never had this issue. I update Chromium once a week or two weeks to the latest non stable version. They call it “lkgr”.

        • Leonardo Gomes

          I can’t reproduce on Windows 10 so maybe it’s a Windows 7 specific issue?

Anyway it doesn’t seem to be the kind of issue that would prevent a release.

          • Юлия

It’s a regression. And a consequence of the new UI. I would take the bug-free fullscreen mode while I watch a video over this new interface. I said below how to reproduce it on 10 as well. Here it’s quite distracting seeing a bright blue line especially on a video wider than 16:9

          • Andrey

By number of bugs, beta is no different from stable version

          • Leonardo Gomes

But it isn’t what matters. New bugs appear at the same rate as old ones are fixed so a new version probably will always have the same number of bugs as of the previous one but they may not be the same ones.

          • Andrey

Some bugs fixed only after five-six months..

          • Leonardo Gomes

            This is how things work.

Some bugs are more easy to fix, while others may be harder. Not to mention that bugs have different priorities.

          • Andrey

            And what?
            Who needs low-quality “stable” versions?

          • Leonardo Gomes

They aren’t low quality stable versions. They work very well for 99% of the ones using it.

All softwares have bugs and not all bugs prevent releases. Otherwise there would never be a stable release.

          • Andrey

Ok, stable bug release?, if bugs move from developer to beta and from beta to stable?

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Welcome to real world. 🙂

Yes, stable versions of softwares have bugs. During alpha and beta phases, their makers try to fix the bugs that they think cause more impact in the user experience, leaving other less important issues to be fixed in a next version cycle.

          • Andrey

Not…., real world of Opera – experiments on UI instead bug fix releases.

        • I can’t believe I have to waste time on this stupidity but here: http://imgur.com/a/sT7Yf

          Same bug on Chrome: http://imgur.com/a/7dOji

This is on Version: 44.0.2510.1449 (PGO) – Opera is up to date. This bug has been around for an extremely long time. I can re-produce this in other browsers too. This has to do with how windows manages active/inactive windows. I know it’s typical for people on here to talk out of their ass but I guess sometimes someone has to call you guys out.

          • Andrey

I don’t have this bug on Opera 44.0.2510.1449 or Chrome 58.0.3029.96. – How i can reproduce it?

    • Do you use some non default configuration on Windows 10? On Win7 this issue seems to be related to opera://flags/#reborn-win7-aero-skin but I can’t reproduce it on Win10 so far.

      • Юлия

On Windows 10 I run launcher.exe in Windows 7 compatibility mode (Right click launcher.exe > Compatibility tab > Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7). Doing this, Windows 10 draws the regular Win32 window controls. All screenshots were taken with “Use small icons” on taskbar feature enabled (Right click > Properties on taskbar). Also they all come from Opera standalone x64. Win 10 is also build 1607 since it’s LTSB.
        https://imgur.com/a/volJh

        >opera://flags/#reborn-win7-aero-skin
Disabling this fixes the issue, but also disables the glass effect on 7, so..

        • Thanks! Compatibility mode was something we were missing on Windows 10. We understand it’s quite troublesome issue for you but we still do not consider it important enough to block promotion of Opera 45 to Stable. I will try to keep it on my radar and perhaps manage to add it to our backlog.

  • Alexs

    Where are the know issues?
The bug (DNAWIZ-13537) from Opera Developer is now in Opera beta. IMHO this is a show stopper for Opera Stable.

Did they ignore the problem or forget it?

    https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1883124/45-0-2545-0-why-depending-compositing

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Maybe there isn’t any?

      • Alexs

Read this thread Linux user without compositing have a black menu border frame. This is unacceptable.
        https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1883124/45-0-2545-0-why-depending-compositing

No problem with Chromium and Vivaldi…

        • Leonardo Gomes

As far as I can remember, it was never listed as a known issue.

          • Alexs

            rrzepecki wrote in the thread:
“hey, the problem with the menu is another known bug, so we will be fixing it.”
            but is not…

          • Leonardo Gomes

            They didn’t say when.

    • Cryio

There are tons of issues caused by this UI revamp.

  • Gordon Freeman

Is the problem solved that the Windows 10 taskbar icon after update to Opera 44 and than to Opera 45 still says it´s Opera 43 ?

  • Cryio

Ok, apparently all you guys completely ignored all the major issues still present with current v45 beta builds. All the bugs and problems I’ve reported are still there. Let me repost them here:

    Opera beta 45.0.2552.634 – REVIEW
This is a v45 beta review in comparison to v44 stable on Windows 10 Creators Update

There are so many problems with this new version of Opera, I don’t know how this could launch anytime soon to stable in this condition. Let’s get to them:

    1. Windows chrome controls: Minimize, fullscreen and close buttons. Great, on Windows 7 you are using the native look and feel buttons. But on Windows 10 (and I assume W8)? You have some weird buttons that are neither in proportions to UWP apps or Edge and are neither similar to File Explorer for example, that uses the old W8 style buttons. Fix this! Make it UWP like on Windows 10 and W8 like on Windows 8.
    2. I don’t know if you are using a different rending engine for the UI fonts, but everything looks blurry and shallow compared to v44, on both normal and HiDPi screens
    3. HiDPi scaling in the UI is completely broken currently. Testing on my Surface Pro 4, Opera v44 is nice and sharp everywhere I look. The web renders in HiDPi in v45, but the interface is a blurry mess
    4. The option in Settings: “Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximized” doesn’t actually disable a pixel anymore like on v44. Feature? Bug? I don’t know.
    5. The option in Settings: “Show system color on top bar” no longer works in v45
    6. The new Speed Dial icon in the address bar is *ugly*
    7. The new Battery icon in the address bar is less visually pleasant than the old one.
    8. The option in Settings: “Force touch interface, regardless of the tablet mode setting” is broken in v45
    9. The new VPN icon in the address bar is *ugly* compared to the old one
    10. When adding a new Speed Dial and hovering the mouse over suggestions, the subtle highlight animation is absent. Everything is static, with a stronger shadow underneath. A regression IMO.
    11. On a HiDPi device, trying to edit a Speed Dial results in a broken interface/menu
    12. On a HiDPi device, with the sidebar unpinned, the Opera menu button has an empty space beneath it, that isn’t highlighted when you hover the cursor over it. It’s fine on non HiDPi.
    13. On a HiDPi device, the favicons for Speed Dials, Settings, News, Bookmarks are incredibly small. Favicons for websites render fine however.
    14. On a HiDPi device, with the sidebar unpinned, the Opera “Menu” text is cut off at the top when you click the button
    15. On a HiDPi device, going to Opera->About, the Opera icon is comically small
    16. On a HiDPi device, the web content for Whatsapp/Facebook sidebar buttons, the “Browse and chat at the same time!” text and everything else on that section is comically small
    17. On a HiDPi device, going to the Speed Dial, Customize, Sidebar, the Tabs option is missing. It’s available on non-HiDPi.
    18. The new Bookmark/Heart menu: Why is it so small? It’s comically small on a HiDPi device.
    19. Clicking the Opera Menu button and hovering over the Exit button, what’s with that small white space underneath it? It looks ugly and out of place.
    20. Same point as above, but now for the Recently Closed tabs button
    21. Hovering your cursor over the Recently Closed section after you pressed the Recently Closed tabs button, *why* does the arrow next to it disappear when you highlight that particular section? It makes no sense.
    22. The new Turbo icon used when loading a website on Turbo is less visually pleasant than the old one.
    23. New dark theme changes the UI/chrome color, but doesn’t change the Opera Menu section to dark as well. It would be more consistent I would gather?
    24. In-Private UI color is a clash between white and pitch black? Like, really? It looks like High-Contrast just turned on and bugged out.
    25. Right clicking a tab and right clicking the empty space near a tab uses two completely looking interfaces. The tab part is using the new v45 UI, the empty space part is using the old v44 UI
    26. When adding a Speed Dial/Bookmark using the Heart Menu, it’s not intuitive that you can change the name of the Dial
    27. When adding a Speed Dial/Bookmark using the Heart Menu. Let’s say … add this Opera Blog page to it. Clicking the name will result in a horizontal scroll bar, though it won’t scroll at all. Adding more text will now only present a vertical bar.
    28. Opening a new tab using + or Ctrl+T pops into existence from bellow. It’s like it blinks afraid into this world. What’s up with this change, lol?

    • Hey,

I will try to answer all issues in a bunch, so I could miss some specific case.

Regarding DPi issues we are currently trying to address those. In the next public developer release (perhaps it will be released this week) we should have those changes available.
Ugly icons is a personal view, we currently sticking with changes we made there.
Options on Opera settings are either deprecated in new UI or actual issues, I’ve reported issue to address it.

I’ve forwarded other points to our design team as I’m not sure if those are intended changes or not.

      Thanks for your feedback!

      • R v

@gmiazga:disqus do you mean that these DPI issues will be fixed with the next “developer edition” of Opera (e.g. Opera Developer 46 or Opera Developer 47), the RC of Opera 45 or do you mean the stable release version of Opera 45?

        • Ari

          Opera Dev

          • R v

So the DPI issues won’t be fixed in Opera 45… 🙁

          • Cryio

There is a chance fixes from the v46 dev stream will be backported to stable v45. It’s happened before. Though not in time for v45 release.

        • I’m not sure if they will all be fixed in next developer. After our tests it seems to have overall improvements on HDPi in compare with current implementation but not sure if it will address all mentioned issues right away.

          • R v

Will this also be an issue for 1440p monitors or just 4k?

    • Ari

Major issues lol, 90% of statements are UI thingys

      • Nekomajin43

And you see those all the time…

        • Ari

That doesn’t make a bug major or minor you know…

          • Nekomajin43

No, it just makes it annoying.

      • Cryio

No show stopping issues, but for an update focused on a UI revamp, the UI is messed up 🙂

    • Sebastian

      What are your HiDPI settings?

      • Cryio

        200% on a Surface Pro 4, 2736×1824 resolution.

  • OstroLk

This happens in Linux installs, but not in Windows 10. This happens also in the stable 44 build and this beta build.

In some Opera installs in Linux (Ubuntu specially) the title bar cannot be un-decorated. In some Opera installs, there is a drop down menu when you right click on the title bar, in some distros there isn’t. In those, where the drop down menu exists, it says “Un-decorate”, and in others “Hide the Title bar.”

This is a strange matter, for all Opera installs were installed from the 64 bit deb package. Could this be corrected in the final release of Opera 45?

  • can release a stable version tonight?

    • Ari

Haha is this like a release buffet or something?

    • Leonardo Gomes

First stable build of a new version usually comes in the week after the beta release candidate has arrived.

    • nanana1

Your wish has been granted :

Opera 45 goes Stable tonight :))

      http://get.geo.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/desktop/45.0.2552.635/

      • really?

        • Leonardo Gomes

It may depend on your time zone. 🙂
I usually see stable releases in the morning.

  • qwerzaq

Opera for android is not updated at all, the last update was 3 months ago the version of Opera 42 when there will be updates

  • Erick Flatcher
  • vatnik91

Включенная опция “Показывать системный цвет на верхней панели” перестала работать только у меня одного или у всех? 45.0.2552.635

    • Darya Antonova

      тоже не работает

  • redfox

I just tried the new Stable version 5.0.2552.635.
The only thing I checked was the UI: It has only the Reborn interface on Win7 available, the classic one is gone (forever?). It involves the ugly blue-green folder icons in the bookmarks bar and the tabs with sharp corners.
Why do you have to keep making everything look like so stupid like Windows 10? Most people hate it.

  • Veles

Opera 45 – but still without the add-ons sync. LOL

    • Leonardo Gomes

It doesn’t seem to me that add-ons sync is something planned for a near future.

      • Veles

        sadly

  • qwerzaq

After highlighting the text of moving the selected text is simply terrible, Vivaldi and Opera 12 are much more comfortable with this
After highlighting text, I can only move the top and bottom
It is necessary that in all directions it was possible to move the text after the selection
    http://imgur.com/ghdGOXw

    • Leonardo Gomes

Here I seem to be able to move selected text to any direction.

      • qwerzaq

After the selection, I try to move the selected text to the left or to the right, I repeatedly select the text and not move the selected text
        Everywhere it happens

        • Leonardo Gomes

Sorry, I didn’t realize that you were talking about link texts. Those indeed work as you described.
However If I remember correctly it may be how things will work for now: right and left to select and up and down to drag.

          • firuz_u7

Yes this is true, but when only select text links.
But when the text is already allocated for its movement, not only the upper and lower right and left should be, I think so, and Vivaldi and Opera 12 also had a select like a boss in this extension, toohttps://addons.opera.com/ru/extensions/details/select-like-a-boss/?display=en

    • firuz_u7

      Yes, I think so too

  • ktxgio

Hi, thanks for new release. I see Opera 45 Stable on ftp server (45.0.2552.635) and i notice that is use Chrome 58.0.3029.81……
Crome was until today at 58.0.3029.96 and this evening i received an update to 58.0.3029.110… could you release final stable release with newer version of Chrome than 58.0.3029.81?
    Thanks
PS: Google, from Chrome 58 stable, force update to x64 builds where there are good conditions… Have you plan this even for Opera or update to x64 build is locked?
    thanks

    • Leonardo Gomes

I think it would be difficult for them to do it as they need to do some tests before doing the intake so Chromium will always be a step ahead.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Aren’t Opera already updating to x64 builds?

      • BK

We do AU to x64 when you manually reinstall Opera via installer.
auto update to x64 is yet to be considered.

    • BK

No worries, new chrome update will be delivered soon 🙂

  • novainc

Two bugs on Linux 64bits version.

First one is a fragment of the red O icon appearing when displaying the menu list when clicking the O icon when the side bar is docked.

Second one is the “are you sure you want to quit this site?” pop up window has the chrome skin. To reproduce open facebook, type something in the status box and, without posting it, try to close the tab.

  • chumachkin_m

    Hi,
can you do, when print page to “Microsoft PDF printer” – page title set as default file name?

  • Johny Walk

update before i had finnaly smooth polayback on y2be, only 1 framedrop per second in 60 fps. Now again plenty of framedrops :/ edge works perfectly.

  • Ari

Youtube is not working with h264 anymore.

Installed Download Chrome Extensions, then h264fy to force youtube play h264 videos and not VP9. None of the videos work, also happens in some sites using other video sources that play h264.

I’m on Debian 8 x64, latest Opera beta.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can download the opera-beta-ffmpeg-codecs package from the Herecura’s repo, and navigate to Opera’s root folder, create a new subfolder lib_extra, and extract libffmpeg.so from the package to this subfolder.
Alternatively, you can add the Canonical Chromium Builds repo, and install/update the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package.

      • Ari

Great thank you the first option worked!

  • L33t4opera

The Opera 46.0.2597.6 has been promoted to the beta channel 😉
The change log, and the announcement.

  • Darya Antonova

    Hi,
The “show system color on top panel” function doesn’t work at all on windows 10. Please fix it, I dont like the gray panel at all…
