What’s the biggest shopping day of the year? It used to be Black Friday or Cyber Monday. However, in terms of sales, the largest shopping day for both online and offline shopping is now Singles’ Day, an unofficial holiday with its roots in China and growing recognition world-wide.
Singles’ Day origins
Singles’ Day is on November 11th (11/11) because, and this is cute, that date consists of singles (ones). It started in the 90’s as a kind of anti-Valentine’s Day among university students who wanted to celebrate being single. Apart from parties and gatherings for singles, it was also a great excuse to buy oneself a gift (because, you know, you deserve it). This new tradition, in turn, led to businesses offering Singles’ Day promotions. But that was only the beginning.
A shopping holiday
The increasing recognition of this day, and the success of its associated promotions, helped grow this quaint holiday into an unprecedented commercial boom. Larger retailers took notice and, not willing to miss an opportunity, began offering their own deals. The current result of this trend is a whole lot of businesses competing to out-promote each other and draw in the shoppers with increasingly tempting offers.
