Opera Mini’s new Status Saver keeps your favourite updates from vanishing

Ever see a status update on the most popular messaging app that you want to hold onto? We get it. A funny video your friend shared or a nice photo – some moments are worth holding onto a bit longer than 24 hours. You always mean to save it in time, and somehow you never quite do. Screenshotting barely helps since it is not built for saving videos, and even photos lose quality along the way. So you figure you’ll get to it eventually, and then boom, it’s gone.

We’re changing that. Opera Mini now comes with a built in Status Saver, so you can view, share, and save status updates right from your browser, no extra app needed.

Why this, why now

If you’ve ever gone looking for an app to save statuses, chances are the process wasn’t smooth.

Meanwhile the habit itself hasn’t gone anywhere. People still want to hold onto a status before it vanishes, whether that’s a meme worth resending or something useful someone shared that you know you’ll want later. So we figured, why send people hunting for a separate app when the browser they already use every day can just do it properly.

How it works

Open Opera Mini and you’ll find Status Saver in the O Menu, or through your Downloads Manager. You can also get there straight from a notification when new statuses are ready to view.

The first time you open it, we’ll walk you through what it does and ask for access to the folder where statuses are stored on your device. Once that’s set, you’ll land on a simple screen showing the statuses currently available to you.

From there you get two options for anything you want to keep: share it right away to wherever you want, or save it so it’s there whenever you need it later.

It’s as simple as that – you don’t need to separately download another app or dig through your phone’s file manager.

Status Saver is rolling out globally, but if we had to guess, it’ll be especially popular in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Indonesia, India, and Pakistan.
