Opera for Android earns Google Play’s Independent Security Review badge, reaffirming commitment to security and privacy
Hey Opera users!
Throughout Opera’s 30-year history, we have pioneered secure, private, and fast browsing experiences for our millions of users. For example, Opera was the first major browser to offer a free, built-in browser VPN service, and we continue to lead in innovation and privacy-first solutions to this day.
Through the years, we have never stopped working hard to safeguard Opera users’ privacy and security. So in another milestone towards that goal, we are excited to announce that Opera for Android with built-in VPN is among the first apps to ever earn Google Play’s new Independent Security Review badge. An initiative by Google Play and the App Defense Alliance, this badge indicates that apps that include VPN functionality have successfully completed a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2.
Why is this important, you ask? Because it means that an independent security reviewer tested the app and confirmed that Opera for Android adheres to Google Play’s safety and security guidelines. Learn more about the process on our Security blog.

Focus on security and privacy
Opera for Android’s built-in browser VPN has already received an independent audit for its security by Cure53, a respected cybersecurity firm based in Berlin, Germany.
And let’s not forget privacy: In combination with the recent no-log policy audit of Opera’s built-in browser VPN by trusted independent auditor Deloitte, this result means that Opera for Android offers a secure as well as private experience.
While Opera for Android’s built-in browser VPN is free to use, don’t forget you can also boost your privacy and security further by subscribing to VPN Pro – a premium VPN service built right into your Opera browser that gives you device-wide protection, more than 3,000 locations worldwide, and coverage for five more Android, Mac, and Windows devices.
Of course, the VPN is only one of the privacy-enhancing features in Opera for Android. For example, just days before 2024 ended we released a significant revamp of our built-in Ad Blocker, offering users the opportunity to customize their ad blocking experience with three distinct modes – including an Enhanced Mode powered by uBlock and AdGuard.
This recognition by the Google Play Store and the App Defense Alliance is one more validation for Opera, showcasing our commitment to privacy and security. It also places us among some of some of the best-loved VPN apps on the Play Store, cementing our position as a trusted browser developer.
