So by now you’ve perhaps noticed that Apple has removed support for iOS 14 and lower since 2021. As a result, iPhones on iOS 14 and lower no longer receive security updates or technical support – leaving them vulnerable to potential attacks and bugs. Throughout the past years we continued supporting Opera on lower iOS devices to protect you from potential threats and bugs. However, we won’t be supporting Opera for iOS 14 or lower anymore.

So in this blog post we’re here to help you understand why we’re making this change, how that affects you, and what you can do about it.

Why is Opera no longer supported on iOS 14 and lower?

We’ve supported iOS 14 as long as possible, however we’re making this change in order to focus our efforts on providing the best experience possible for our end users.

Next steps

For some time we have known that we will have to deprecate support for Opera for iOS 14 and its predecessors. Since last year, we have worked hard to resolve known extant issues and optimize performance so that we leave the app in the best shape possible. With Opera version 5.4.2 we will formally withdraw support for those older operating systems, and those users will no longer receive security updates.

Over the last year we have also notified users on iOS 14 and lower to upgrade, encouraging them to update their operating system to a newer version of iOS (that is, only if they are using a device capable of accommodating that iOS upgrade). So if you’re able to download and install a version of iOS newer than iOS 14, you are advised to do so in order to keep secure and getting the most out of Opera for iOS and your device. 

Can I still use Opera, even after the discontinuation of support?

Users on iOS 14 and lower will still be able to surf the web with Opera for iOS, to download it from the app store they need to go to Account > Purchase History.
