Today we’re rolling out a new version of Opera Mini for Android that gives you 40% faster webpage-loading time and even more data savings.

Opera Mini now comes with a free, built-in ad blocker. That way, you don’t have to spend time finding and installing third-party apps to do your blocking.
Opera Mini for Android now comes with a free ad blocker, built right inside the browser

Faster internet experience with free ad blocker

Online ads take up your phone’s limited screen space, and bloated ads with heavy tracking can slow down the browsing experience on your phone.

Opera Mini has always been a speed-demon browser, and that’s why it was important for us to bring ad blocking to our users. Opera Mini works seamlessly on slow connections, optimizes online video to reduce buffering delays, and compresses the size of webpages for faster browsing and massive data savings. Introducing ad blocking for faster webpage loading is just one more way we show our commitment to speed!

Ad blocker is a frequently-requested feature from you and the 120 million other people who browse with Opera Mini. By adding our ad blocking technology to Opera Mini for Android, we’re making sure you browse faster with less mobile-data usage and less distractions from your phone screen.

How can it be so fast? Ad blocking in Opera Mini happens on the Opera servers, before the ads even reach your phone. When ad blocking is enabled, Opera Mini does not even request the ad information from the website you’re visiting.

Even more data savings

Did you know that online ads also eat up your mobile data plan? Research by Enders Analysis shows that between 18 and 79% of data downloaded on smartphones is from ads.

Opera Mini already shrinks data from webpages by up to 90% for data savings and faster browsing.  By also blocking ads, Opera Mini users can achieve even more data savings on top of that, so that less is deducted from a user’s mobile data allowance. That means users’ data packages can last even longer, for more news, more social media and more of the web.

How to enable ad blocker in Opera Mini

Under the “O” menu in Opera Mini, tap the data-savings summary. From there, simply toggle “block ads” on or off. On Android, the free ad blocker is available in both high- and extreme-savings modes. So easy, that you’ll want to make Opera Mini your new default browser.

In even more speed-demon features, today’s release of Opera Mini for Android also adds speed and performance improvements. This includes improved start-up time, improved installation time and a reduced binary size so that Opera Mini takes up less space on your handset. Plus, you can now add your favorite websites directly to your phone’s home screen, to keep them at your fingertips for fast access – you don’t even need to open your Opera Mini browser first!

is ad blocking coming to opera mobile too? I am kind of used to opera mobile and would not like to switch to mini…

    • Wando Schneider

I made that change, and I can tell you that’ll compensate the effort.

  • Firdaus Ahmad

quite slow compared to previous version.
but i love the Coast-like loading effect

  • Kai Ockendorf

Will we have this ad blocker feature in Opera Mini for iOS soon aswell?

    • VeraLB

@kaiockendorf:disqus Let’s see. I’m also waiting for updates myself 🙂

  • kapsi

I wish you combined Opera for Android and Opera Mini into one product. Now Mini has ad blocking, the old Turbo mode and features like “night mode”, but the other Opera has “force resize on all pages”, which is very useful for me.

    • VeraLB

Hi @disqus_feOlikeBlH:disqus, the good thing is we’re all still as one team for mobile. We’ll forward your feedback to the product folks 🙂

  • niks2456

Pls add this to Opera mobile

  • ga_pechorin

please, stop that opera mini/opera mobile nonsense already.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Why nonsense? And what nonsense?

  • mha2999

When can we except opera coast beta for android?

  • My extremely small data plan and I thank you for making this possible Opera Software! 😀

  • John W

Hopefully the VPN feature at desktop can be integrated into Opera Mini with Android soon.

  • ParakeetTurd

When will this version with adblocker be available on iOS?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Well, Opera just released a VPN app (that includes adblocker) for IOS.

  • Ricardo

Time to update “Opera for Android”?
Several Stable Chrome builds were already released on the 50.x branch, but the app is still on 49.
Today, Chrome got security update version 50.0.2661.102.

One thing which has been bugging me for a while is mobile Opera’s inflexibility around changing default search engines. Opera Coast on iOS does it right: you can change the default search engine permanently, and you get a tonne of options to pick from too. I use DuckDuckGo, but it is currently impossible to select this as default in Opera for Android, Opera Mini for Android, or Opera Mini for iOS. Surely it can’t be that difficult to implement? Why is Coast any different?

    Thanks in advance!

It doesn’t really make sense that Opera Mini is more feature packed than the “opera for Android”. Opera Mini should be “opera for Android” with certain features stripped out to save on size. Please add all the Opera Mini stuff to mobile. It needs some love.

    • Ricardo

Imo, Opera for Android needs to get the same love they put on Opera for desktop.

  • Paladium

it’s amazing (sarcasm)…..opera mini is most functional that Opera Mobile (chromiun version) ….how is possible for a version “reduced” is much efficient than its full version? anyway, it’s amazing the work they are doing, just do not neglect their other versions

Ad blocker, in mobile ? hahaha Lol :p

I can’t access using Opera Mini with Extreme Mode enabled. It says “can’t reach server”. If I disable Extreme Mode, it opens the site correctly.
