How to migrate your Opera Crypto Wallet on Desktop

Today we’re letting you know that we’ll be phasing out our Crypto Wallet within Opera One, our flagship desktop browser, and Opera GX as well. This is important for two reasons. First, after July 15, 2025 you won’t be able to add any assets into the Crypto Wallet as it will stop working altogether. And, second, you will need to migrate to another wallet of your choice before January 1, 2026.
The reason for this is that we’ve pivoted our strategy towards MiniPay– a non-custodial stablecoin wallet built on the Celo blockchain that enables instant transactions with a phone number.
However, it’s important to note that MiniPay is different from the previous Crypto Wallet, and it’s not a replacement for it, as it is a dollar stablecoin wallet and not a crypto wallet. Stablecoins have their value tied to a traditional currency (in the case of MiniPay it’s the US dollar) while crypto currencies don’t. Therefore it’s important that all of you who are using the Crypto Wallet take action by choosing another non-custodial crypto wallet of your choice like Metamask, and migrate to it – we’ll explain how to do so in this blog post.
The phasing out process will take place between July 15, 2025 and January 1, 2026. During that period of time the Crypto Wallet will only be accessible for the purpose of switching to another wallet, and you won’t be able to add new assets to it. So, if you’re currently using the Opera Crypto Wallet and hold any assets in it, you need to migrate to another wallet before January 1, 2026 – after which the Crypto Wallet will be removed and any remaining assets will become inaccessible.
If you want to know what steps you need to take in order to transfer and secure your assets, follow the instructions below.
How to transfer your assets to a new wallet?
In a nutshell, your crypto is stored on the blockchain, so to access it via any other non-custodial wallet, you just need your secret recovery phrase from the Opera Crypto Wallet. This phrase is, literally, the key to access and manage your assets from any non-custodial wallet, and we’ve prepared a guide that explains how to get it. We will update this guide in the future if necessary. Please make sure to keep the phrase safely stored somewhere, and not as a photo of it on your phone.
Where can I find my Opera Crypto Wallet secret recovery phrase?
- Check if you have previously written down your secret recovery phrase (also called a backup phrase). This is typically a 12-word phrase which allows you to recover your wallet. Remember to not share this phrase with anyone. If you don’t have it written down, proceed to the next step.
- Look for the Crypto Wallet icon
in your Opera browser’s sidebar. If you do not see the icon, click the three-dots at the bottom of your sidebar and enable Crypto Wallet.
- Open the Crypto Wallet
from your Opera browser’s sidebar. It may take a moment to open the wallet, if you see a spinning loader please wait until it will finish loading.
- Once the wallet is open, you may be asked to sign in. If you can see your Wallet balance, tokens and coins, then you’re already signed in.
If you see the Opera Wallet is retiring message, you can use the Migrate assets now shortcut and follow the steps there to obtain your secret recovery phrase.
If you don’t see this message, then click Settings (gear icon) and select Backup phrase to obtain your secret backup phrase
Next, please confirm your wallet password and the secret recovery phrase will be displayed. Write it down, but remember to not share it with anyone.
Important: If you have forgotten your wallet password, do not use the “Forgot password?” option, as it requires your 12-word backup phrase.
- If you are not signed into your Opera Crypto Wallet, and do know your secret recovery phrase, the only way to obtain your secret recovery phrase is if you have your wallet saved in your Opera Account. In such a case, select I already have a wallet, and choose Use Opera Account. After signing into your Opera Account and regaining wallet access, return to step 4.
Write down all the words of your secret recovery phrase (also called backup phrase) and don’t share it with anyone.
As a Wallet user, how can I switch to the Metamask wallet?
- You will need the secret recovery phrase for your Wallet. To find your recovery phrase, refer to the previous question: Where can I find my Opera Crypto Wallet secret recovery phrase?
- Go to https://metamask.io in your Opera browser. Add Metamask to your Opera browser and follow the onboarding steps. Use the Import an existing wallet option. You will be asked to provide your secret recovery phrase.
Can I switch to any crypto wallet?
Yes, you can use any crypto wallet, but it is recommended that you only use trusted wallets, such as the Metamask wallet in the Opera browser. Hardware wallets like Ledger or Trezor are also safe ways to manage access to your blockchain wallet.
Does this affect me if I’m not a Crypto Wallet user?
If you are an existing user but you never activated the crypto wallet feature, it will be removed from the UI. And if you’re a new user, you won’t see it at all.
What if I am an Opera Points user?
If you are currently a member of the Cashback Opera Points program, there will be no changes to how you use the program, collect points, achieve statuses, or receive boost rewards.
What if I am an Opera Cashback user?
If you are a Cashback user, you’ll continue to enjoy the full features of the cashback service. Your cashback remains available for payouts as usual, but it cannot be visible in an external crypto wallet.
