Opera’s “Web on Wheels” brings free Wi-Fi to 20 Indian cities

This year marks Opera’s 20th anniversary. And, throughout these years, we’ve had a splendid time doing what we love the most – enabling more people, in more places to get the most out of internet access.

Building web browsers – that work on all kinds of mobile devices, get you online in any kind of network condition, save a lot of mobile data and help you make the most of your time online – is just one of the reasons users love Opera.

We see our 20th anniversary as yet another occasion for us to do something special for our users around the world.

Web on Wheels rolls out in India

In India, almost everyone has a mobile device that is capable of accessing the internet. But, did you know that only 19% of Indians use the internet? Many users are reluctant to use the mobile internet, due to a lack of awareness or concerns that using the mobile internet is too complicated.

Now, we could hardly leave that thought unaddressed in the minds of users from the country that is home to the largest number of Opera Mini users in the world!

Our desire to show people how easy it is to get online is our vision behind Web on Wheels. It features a specially-equipped WOW Car that provides free Wi-Fi. Over the next 10 months, the WOW Car will travel across India, covering 20 cities including Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad. The car will be stationed at multiple locations throughout the city for 20 days each.

While the WOW Car is in their city, mobile users just need to approach it and connect to the Opera Wi-Fi connection to be able to browse for free for 20 minutes each day. There is no limit to the amount of data that can be used during this time or the websites and apps that can be used with this free internet service.

We want to bring the web to everyone and I’m confident that Web on Wheels will give that extra nudge to get newbies online. So, if you’re see the WOW Car in any of the cities, and you’ve been trying to get your parents, cousins or any other important people in your life to start using mobile internet, feel free to bring them by.
