Hi,

Today, we want to share with you the last Opera beta update before we announce Opera 47 stable. We hope there are no serious bugs in here, and that it is in stable quality čÖé Here are some highlights:

  • Fixed ‘Resume’ button for┬áinterrupted downloads
  • Chromium was updated to version 60.0.3112.78

As usual, all changes are included in the changelog.

Does this fix the Google Maps issue where Google Maps causes the browser to stall and sometimes freeze?

    • Sebastian

Unfortunately not. If you experience this problem, please turn on hardware acceleration in opera:settings (“Show advanced settings” required first) and restart the browser. That should help.

      • Gator5000e

Thanks, but I’ve tried that and it doesn’t help.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Check opera://gpu to see if it says that you are using hardware acceleration.

          • Gator5000e

Thanks, but I have no idea on how to interpret what I am seeing. I have Hardware Acceleration turned on in the Advanced Browser settings.

          • Leonardo Gomes

See the first section. If hardware acceleration is being used then it should show ‘hardware accelerated’ or something similar on most of the section fields.

          • Gator5000e

This is what it shows. As I said, the option is On in advanced settings.

            Graphics Feature Status
Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Flash: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Flash Stage3D: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Flash Stage3D Baseline profile: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Compositing: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
            Multiple Raster Threads: Enabled
Native GpuMemoryBuffers: Software only. Hardware acceleration disabled
Rasterization: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Video Decode: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
Video Encode: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable
WebGL: Hardware accelerated but at reduced performance
            WebGL2: Unavailable

          • Sebastian

It says that hardware acceleration is unavailable. That’s why this Google Maps issue occurs even when you enable hardware acceleration option in settings.

          • Gator5000e

Thanks. Is that a video card issue (driver or otherwise)?

But as I said earlier, I didn’t have these issues with earlier versions of Opera. Any chance this gets fixed in later versions?

I will leave you alone after this.

          • Sebastian

Yes, I guess that it is a problem with the graphics card. I can not guarantee that this will work, but you can still try to enable “#ignore-gpu-blacklist” flag in opera:flags and restart the browser. After that, check in opera:gpu if positions are “Hardware accelerated”. Before enabling the flag, please read the warning at the top of opera:flags.

In the topic of fixing the issue, it is a known and reported problem, so yes – there is a chance that it will be fixed.

          • Sebastian

I have a question to you as well – could you give me some details like model of your graphics card, operating system you’re using and check if hardware acceleration is available for you in Chrome (chrome://gpu)? Thanks in advance.

          • Gator5000e

Sure. Be warned I am not this savvy so here is what I found. My device manager shows an Intel HD Graphic 4000 and an NVIDIA GeForce 630M under display adapters. I am also running DisplayLink to run 2 external monitors off of my laptop.

I don’t have Chrome actually installed on my computer. When I run the chrome://gpu it shows me the same thing as when I run the opera://gpu

Let me know if this is or is not helpful.

          • Leonardo Gomes

In settings you should see an option to choose which card to use. Try changing the selected one.

          • Gator5000e

Honestly, I am not sure if that is even possible. If it is, I don’t see an option for it in any of the display settings. It is my guess that the two devices are working together but it’s above my pay grade to figure out how. Plus, this is my work computer so I am not really comfortable experimenting with the devices. So I will just wait until an update is hopefully issued that solves the issue. I am sorry I couldn’t have provided you with the information you requested. But thanks again for all your assistance.

            #gpu-rasterization-msaa-sample-count

Set to 2. Images all raster blazing fast.

          • Gator5000e

Tried your suggestion, but it didn’t help. But thanks.

          • Rudric

Hmm you could try enabling QCUIC it can help on some websites.

    • Rudric

      opera://flags
      Look for: #gpu-rasterization-msaa-sample-count
      Set it to 2
      Restart Opera
      !!!

      Could you provide screenshots?

      • Gordon Freeman

If you click the heart icon for Bookmarks (Lesezeichen) the opened site shows:
“All bookmarks” should be translated to “Alle Lesezeichen”
“Trash” should be translated to “Papierkorb”
        My Opera Version also shows:
“Unsorted bookmarks” should be translated to “Unsortierte Lesezeichen”

Also look at the Opera Menu button -> Lesezeichen -> …

        • Ewa

Hi, thank you for the details! I’ve reported this.

  • KarenArzumanyan

We are waiting for a stable 48, because in 47 little new čÖü

    • Leonardo Gomes

It will still take a while for 48 to reach stable channel.

      • Hector MA

Some 2 months from here, no big deal.

    • Rudric

I’m guessing these are “summer releases” čśÇ

  • Hector MA

I stopped paying attention to new features several versions ago. I just care it’s secure, stable, compatible and fast.

Compatibility being my number one concern, from time to time something here and there won’t work as in others, even Edge sometimes comes to the rescue.

  • Alexander Chernig0v

Hang up games with a flash player if during the game to open several more windows in the browser! Then the window with the game freezes! You need to restart the game only after restarting the browser!

  • firuz_u7

Why Opera uses Flash in most default sites
Chrome and Vivaldi use HTML5 by default
    Example sites:
    https://ok.ru/
    http://animevost.org/
How can I fix this if it’s just me?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s up to the site to decide if it sends HTML5 or Flash to the browser.

In opera’//flags there is a flag to disable Flash.

      • that’s cool!

      • firuz_u7

Did not help anyway Flash prevails anyway

        • Leonardo Gomes

Strange, if I enable ‘prefer HTML5 over Flash’, most sites can’t even detect Flash and l need to add them aa exceptions for Flash to work.

          • firuz_u7

Yes I have to enable but still does not work I even deleted flash
So I completely deleted flash but on this site I have to install flash
            Chrome and Vivaldi are OK
            Examples:
Opera: http://imgur.com/a/Nrm6i does not work asks to install flash
            Chrome: http://imgur.com/a/FTNpo plays without problems
Try downloading this video via html5

          • Vux777

site you linked works on my win10 Opera dev x64
but some other videos do not play (eg. GOT)
            @Ewa I think it’s related to this
            console throws error:
.Uncaught (in promise) DOMException: Failed to load because no supported source was found

edit. how the freaking @mentions works? Ó╣Ć╠»═íÓ╣Ć

          • firuz_u7

And what do we do with it? (

        • Wolfpig

Have you tried to uninstall flash from your system?
If you don’t use sites which heavily depend on it you probably would not need it anyway anymore.

          • firuz_u7

So I completely deleted flash but on this site I have to install flash
            Chrome and Vivaldi are OK
            Examples:
Opera: http://imgur.com/a/Nrm6i does not work asks to install flash
            Chrome: http://imgur.com/a/FTNpo plays without problems
Try downloading this video via html5
Here’s the link to the address:
            http://mundo-latino.ru/tureckie_seriali_online/3927-ty-moya-sen-benimsin-vse-serii-na-russkom.html

          • Wolfpig

Ok….that seems normal as the player on the site seems to not support html5/webm nad need the flash player.
That it work on chrome could be because the pepper flash player plugin there comes directly with the browser (if they have not changed that)

          • firuz_u7

Chrome blocks the flash and asks the user to activate it, but on this site it does not ask to unlock it as well as Vivaldi because they use html5
Opera c flash ask to activate it
The conclusion of Opera is very poorly optimized for html5 with other sites, even the recently released Vivaldi reproduces html5 much better than Opera and it’s very sad because Opera is my favorite browser

          • Leonardo Gomes

Try using an extension to change Opera’s user agent into Chrome’s one to see if the site starts sending HTML5 version of the video to Opera.

          • firuz_u7

When to change the agent it can be working but it is like an additional extension and an additional process I really do not like it

          • Leonardo Gomes

If the page works as should when you change the user agent then the problem is caused by the page itself and you should contact them to solve it.
The idea of using such extension would be to check if changing the user agent really makes the page work and, if the solution were confirmed, have a workaround that would allow you to use the page until its authors fix the problem.

Glad to see “DNA-61685 [Win] Bookmark bar folder menu is displayed too high” fixed!

As you can see in the screenshots above, the Opera Menu gets too large when you have sync enabled. It’s really ugly and inconsistent. Can you fix this old problem? Thank you.

    • Ewa

      Thanks, reported.

  • FluffyBoyo

Any chance we can get the font smoothing Mactype to work in Opera please.

    https://github.com/snowie2000/mactype

    github – snowie2000 – mactype
    ———–

And also my two usual other requests:

Extending the Dark UI mode to all back end settings pages.

Adding Tab Bar mouse wheel scrolling left and right.
Using Kinetic scrolling (with kinetic settings)

  • Hetai-Na

It would be nice if Opera had an option to whitelist websites from the VPN, for example, Netflix. Also, and option to enable acceptable ads in Opera, because I want to help some websites. This is the reason why I so not use the native adblocker yet.

    • Regarding native ad blocker, you can subscribe to other lists as well, including acceptable ads, see https://adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads.

      1. Open Settings, click “Manage Lists”
      2. Paste https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/exceptionrules.txt into Custom lists editbox and press enter. That’s all.

      • Hetai-Na

It didn’t work. I added the list, but ads in DuckDuckGo are still blocked. The same doesn’t happen with ABP, with acceptable ads enabled. I think Opera has some bug with it. Anyway, thank you!

        • Leonardo Gomes

Why not add DDG to the exceptions list?

          • Hetai-Na

Because I wanted to have acceptable ads enable around all the web. DDG was just an example.

  • jvmontana

What happens with opera turbo in linux?
    How do I enable it?

    • Ewa

You can enable it in settings (first you have to have marked “Show advanced settings”)

      • jvmontana

        Thank you very kind

        • Ewa

          You’re welcome čÖé

    • Nekomajin43

Find Turbo Button in the extension catalog!

      • jvmontana

I installed it. Very useful. Thank you

Has the Opera crash on bookmark removal from bookmarks bar been fixed?
It is a high priority bug.

  • MHC130

I have been using the latest Opera Beta but switched backed to stable this morning because of a latency issue: even settings take a long time to come up. I cleared history and checked other settings – no go! No alerts from my virus protection; I removed pluggins. I have been running Opera Beta for a while because of the Google Calendar issue. Opera Stable doesn’t work with Google Calendar. I get the message to enable cookies – but cookies is already enabled. Also, I just noticed I having a problem logging into GmaiI because of “cookies.” I Never had a problem with Beta. I am running Windows 10 with the latest update and patches.

  • Michal

From time to time Opera stops responding when I turn off the VPN feature, but unfortunately I cannot reproduce it. Windows 10.

    • redfox

This bug is very old (maybe since O44 or 45), but still not fixed. It seems, that the crash occurs mostly in situations, when Opera is waiting to receive data from an overloaded VPN server, and you switch the button Off in the same moment.
      Win 7/32.

      • Michal

Thanks. Well, let’s hope it will be identified and fixed one day soon.

  • Hetai-Na

I think opera should have a “compatibility mode”, when opera says to websites it’s Chrome. Some government websites here, refuse to work with every web browser, except Chrome or Firefox.

    • Mikolaj Boc

You could use some kind of user agent switcher to work with these websites.

      • Hetai-Na

Yeah, but why? Native feature are always better. We could use a lot, a lot of adblockers available today, but Opera now offers a better option, natively. Also, most people don’t even know what an user agent is.

  • Hector MA

    What’re you waiting for?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      For…?

      • Hans Hansen

…promoting it to the stable channel. čśë

        • Leonardo Gomes

Usually it happens on the week after the release candidate launch.

  • Alberto

Much desire to try it at the stable channel, on Linux Mint KDE. The very best Chromium based browser for me.
    Greetings.

  • Pro_info

It’s really strange, personally the tabs cannot load, just like the speed dial, after a course or a long time of use. I have to close opera and reopen it for it to work again. Do others have this problem? (I specify that I am still in 47.0.2631.23.)
Windows 7 x64, same problem with privacy window

    • FluffyBoyo

Yes, for me its the whole tab bar, the min,max and X close all just disappear after a long session open. Only the left side O Menu is visible which I use to close, wait, run ccleaner and then re-open. Its been happened for a little while now across the last several updates.

  • Alper Ala├žam

    Opera dont stable Windows 10.

  • long wait for 47s

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Just the regular one. čÖé

It should be around here in the next days if things works as usual.

  • redfox

I just downloaded the Opera Stable 47.0.2631.39.

It still crashes when I delete a bookmark from a folder in the bookmarks bar.
I would be really glad if someone fixes this important bug finally.

    And another bug:
Corrupted drop down menus in Opera opera://flags/ :
If you click a drop down menu of an item (which normally contains words Enabled/Disabled/Default), the “Default” is missing, and “Enabled” is listed twice.
    Reported as DNAWIZ-18787.

    One more bug:
Black website favicons are shown as white, in both tabs and bookmarks bar (see mageo.cz for example). Reported as DNAWIZ-18786.

    • Leonardo Gomes

The problem with opera:flags menus is known.

      • Andrey

        And what?!

        • Leonardo Gomes

Nothing, it was just for information.

    • Andrey

      About mageo.cz – https://i.imgur.com/KGDNXCI.png 47.0.2631.39/win7 all ok.

      • redfox

What Opera version, 64 or 32 bit? Mine is 32 bit on 32 bit Win 7.

        • Andrey

          32 on win7 x64

          • redfox

I just got a message that this behavior is a “new feature” when a dark theme is selected.

    • I’m getting these weird crashes on bookmark deletion as well. It does this consistently, but not on all bookmarks. For some reason, there are individual ones that always make it crash. And there are most that never crash Opera. Weird.

      • Andrey

Always crash – if try remove bookmark from sub-sub-folder.

Opera flags(opera://flags) shows duplicate option. Either 2 Enabled, or 2 Disabled option is shown when trying to change the state of any flag.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s known.
