Opera Next 24 updated to 24.0.1558.43

Greetings from Poland. Today we have a new update of Opera Next. In this new version we have updated to Chromium (37.0.2062.76) and fixed some small issues related to tabs.
Opera will now prefer the PPAPI flash player over the NPAPI flash player, if PPAPI has been installed on the system. If you do not have the PPAPI flash player and you would like to use it; you can download it from the Adobe labs page.

As usual, all the changes are available in changelog

I have problems with H264 and WebM VP8 in this build?

Proprietary media types Are enabled.

What’s the issue here? :p

• Cryio

H.264 was enabled in Opera 25, not in 24.

• SQL

It was added in 24? And the flag is there and i have it enabled.

I have Windows 7 64 bit..?

• Leonardo Gomes

Don’t know, do you? :p I thought it was Vista.
And do you have the codecs installed? Maybe they are necessary.

• SQL

Do you know how can i check the codecs? But I mean the codecs WERE supported a few weeks ago when i last checked, now it doesn’t recognize any.

• Leonardo Gomes

Don’t know. I usually install a codec pack just after have installed Windows but i don’t know if it makes any difference for Opera.

• Sidney Moraes

Only MSE & H.264 is not compatible in here

• Khairul Skmt

thanks for new version of Opera beta!!!!

Same issues with crashing on certain pages on both my PC and my Laptop. Shockwave plugin likes to crash frequently too. Next 23 Builds: never had a problem. Next 24 Builds: all have page crashes and shockwave plugin issues.

I found out how to fix the “Opera window not getting correctly focused” bug when it happens. I had a youtube video running as the window froze again, so i decided to test what happens when i go fullscreen; Well, the bug disappeared. It may be related to flash then i guess. I have NPAPI flash.

• La Ma

So. Now I also switched to another browser. Waited for an proper update with all old features like notes, side panel, “about:cache”, and so on long enough.
Used Opera 12.17 by default, also installed the newer one and checked every few months if something happened. For a long time, the old opera was still better than the other stuff out there, it was THE browser, even it was already outdated and only updated the last time when the heart-bleed bug occurred.

We all used opera not because it looked good (which it did indeed), but because it was the user friendliest browser out there with tons of beautiful inventions which enriched the web experience. Not to forget, at least as I remember, Opera was the only browser, which passed the acid3 test for a long time, which was great, it was beside the beautiful little special things like autosurfing to the next page by hitting the spacebar, using right+left click to navigate quick, and so on, the reason why I brought it to all of my friends and they loved it to!

I can not understand what is going on here. Every time i bought a new computer or installed a new OS, Opera was the first thing which was installed. I neither like Firefox nor Chrome, but at the moment in which the old 12.17 becomes to old to use, i have no choice but changing to Chrome, which is a sad thing and a big downgrade in my opinion. And why should I use a clone of it?

Arrgh…. I’m not a sentimental guy, but because of this, I could cry.
Sorry if this post should appear on another place, but i thought at least I should tell you, why I’m leaving after years of intense use.

• Raylan Givens

You meant all “proper bloat”? Opera now should be as Windows native as possible and especially not follow Chrome which became an OS itself.

• La Ma

You are right, its so sad.. the old engine was perfect, do not know why they changed to chromium..
I’m quite in a struggle with myself, which browser do you use? As i look around the web I did not find anything which fits my needs like the old 12.xx opera..

• Herr Pietrus

Maxthon Perhaps… But as for me it works bad and at least had some problems with flash…

• La Ma

Thanks, did not know maxthon, will give it a try, also on chrome clone baidu spark browser which I found right now.
Will notice you when I find a browser which fits my needs.

• http://mikanoshi.name/ Mikanoshi Kimemoshito

You should list all you want from the briwser first :)

If you want customization – Firefox without a doubt, its level of customization is even higher than in old Opera, sometimes you even lost in all those options that addons provide. Addons have access to some low level browser parts, so they are not like that lame Chrome extensions, they really change things.

FF has its own tab manager – Tab Groups, which is more convenient than tab stacking, I handle hundreds of tabs divided into categories with ease. Opera Blink and Chrome are unusable for me without such thing.

FF has a good ol’ favourites that you can put to any panel as a dropdown menu.

Side panels, about:cache, about:memory, about:addons-memory as an addon :)

You can have as addons: mouse gestures, flash block, ads remover, RSS reader (all I’ve found are worse than in Opera Presto though), all kinds of information about the page can be placed to toolbars (number of images, page size, speed, load time, progress, etc), form recovery (super useful addon to restore text in forms when you accidentally close a page or turn off your PC :D), referer control, tabs control (the number things you can customize here is just huge), speed dial (Presto’s one is better too, I’m still searching the pretty one with Alt+N hotkeys)

I am a big Opera Presto fan, but moved to FF and now my satisfaction with browser is ~95% ;-)

• Arakki

“(all I’ve found are worse than in Opera Presto though)”

This is the reason I can’t swap over, the mouse gesture addons are horrible on FF and require a minimum distance travelled to work. I don’t want to guess if I’ve moved 50 pixels down before turning right, I want it to recognize that I made a down->right gesture no matter how small it is.

Presto does this perfectly.

• http://mikanoshi.name/ Mikanoshi Kimemoshito

It’s about RSS reader, gestures are working great. Try FireGestures, there is no setting for length, but it works even for the smallest lines I can draw with a mouse))

• Martin Brada

Chrome does not have notes or side panel either.

• La Ma

And as i wrote, because of this its a downgrade. Im searching for another alternative already, because as I also wrote I don’t like chrome.

• Martin Brada

That is why I did not understand the choice. Opera 15+ is still closer to Opera 12 than Chrome. There are some other alternatives to Opera 12.

• Herr Pietrus

I think he did it in protest against changes in new Opera…

• La Ma

Because i use google docs quite often, which works fine in chrome but not in opera 12, so i have chrome already installed.
Thats the only reason. When I find a browser which fits my needs better, I’ll tell you.

• Martin Brada

Now I get it. I have been in the same situation. Opera 15 solved the issue.

• Nedos N

Chrome can sync favorites and other stuff

• Martin Brada

Yes, sync is the feature I really miss. I referred to things that were mentioned.
It still sounds weird that someone does not like the new Opera, misses Opera 12 and therefore uses Chrome.

• xoex

I agree with all and cry stuff too. But it’s ridiculous logic that opera 15+ still better than chrome! It’s like you had a cute beautiful girlfriend whom you had sex with, every week, best ones in your life, now she come and say let’s be just friends and talk! It gets you down, It’s better to go out and find another girlfriend just to talk instead of ex-gf to remind you of your days! New opera will lose most of its fans. They shifted from power users to dumb users and google is best in gathering dumb people.

• La Ma

I agree. But most of the people I know used Opera because of its specials, which are completely erased now and that hurts really. None of them use it anymore, its a sad thing.
As I wrote in another reply below, I see my change to chrome as a massiv downgrade, feels like somebody cut of all my fingers and tells me yet I have my toes to use instead.
Use it, because I had it installed already (because of google docs).

Although my english is not the best, please don’t misunderstand me: i think opera may become as beautiful as it was again, maybe even better, because they built it from scratch and things need time.. but at the moment, only their mobile app works great for me and I’m sad, that the desktop part is not – at least while finishing develepment of all previous features – devided into 2 segments which are continously developed, the old engine and with chromium instead.
I can understand that the use of chromium eases the maintainance of the final product, it’s from google but as I know it’s open source, so there is no need to be afraid of beeing spyed out or stuff. And it’s cool that even more guys programming it, changes and development is speeded up..

I do not agree with the dumb people part, I would better say the lazy ones, who even don’t want the ability to change much.

• Arakki

I’ve got my personal bi-annual check of the newest Opera upcoming soon, I really hope they manage to push bookmarks and a way to disable whatever the start screen is into it so I don’t need to hunt for the settings for an hour before starting to use the browser.

Mouse gestures, advanced keyboard control and tab control are already in there so massive changes aren’t needed anymore to be able to swap over to it from O12.

• Cryio

Final stabilizations? :D

• Raylan Givens

PPAPI is O.K. but I stopped using Flash a few months ago. All major sites now play html5 video.

• apple

win8.1 update isuee:metro default program selector only have the install version.
my opera dev usb version can’t be default browser .,and i install a opera dev in c: at the same time,i don’t want to use intall version as default. How can i solve it?

• Leonardo Gomes

Afaik, you can’t. Windows allows only installed programs to be set as default.
Maybe you can change something on the registry but i don’t know how to do it or even if it’s possible.

• Dark Magician

Fix window size on YT.

• Leonardo Gomes

What’s wrong with window size?

I’ve juste tested with a video and the size seems the same on Opera, Firefox and Chrome, only on IE it seems a little bit larger.

• Vux777

I think directWrite plays (big?!) role in font size in latest versions.
If some font is set in CSS font-weight: 900; it will look different with directWrite enabled (overblown) while without it, won’t make any difference
not all fonts…

• Leonardo Gomes

But the issue is with fonts or with the video window size?

Regarding fonts, i guess that if you visit the same site with different browsers, each one of them will display the fonts in a different way.

• Vux777

lol…
I don’t know why I read “fix font size…” in original post :/
gotta go see an optician

• Dark Magician

I posted screenshots already, it’s smaller than every other browser.

• http://jakubrusinek.pl/ Jakub Rusinek

How do I actually get Pepper Flash for Opera? WIll it fix Flash fullscreen bug (video is still)? And no, I will not disable hardware acceleration. It’s there for a reason.

• Sidney Moraes

Opera is not finding Pepper Flash (it installed)

• Leonardo Gomes

No problems here, ppapi flash is listed on opera:plugins.

Try reinstalling ppapi flash.

• Sidney Moraes

I tried a few minutes ago and nothing happens

• Leonardo Gomes

Which ppapi flash are you installing?

• Sidney Moraes
• Leonardo Gomes
• Sidney Moraes

Yes, of course

• Leonardo Gomes

It works on developer build?

• Sidney Moraes

It works if I do some changes in the shortcut

• Leonardo Gomes

And without those changes?

Btw, do you also have npapi flash installed? If so, have you disabled it on opera:plugins?
Don’t forget to click on “show details” to be able to see both flash plugins if the case.

• Sidney Moraes

In opera: plugins I see Flash Player(1), without the changes.

• Leonardo Gomes

That’s strange. What if you uninstall all flash players and then reinstall the ppapi one? Does it work?

• BogdanM

I second this. PPAPI Flash is not recognized on a USB Install in the Stable version 24 (Windows 8.1U1 32-bit). It is however functioning correctly on the last Opera Next 24 with Standard installation (Windows 8.1U1 64-bit).

Reinstalling PPAPI Flash or uninstalling NPAPI Flash doesn’t help.

• supaywasi

When, please, when will you add the capability to set custom default search engines?!!!

• https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

For the time being you must use a keyword or change per-session. Its less than ideal, but that is the order of things right now. More details available on the forums and previous comments here.

• Alexandre Cavaco

I’ve found odd behavior with HTML5 video and PPAPI, seems like a bug?

I’ve got the opera://flags/#proprietary-media-types-playback flag enabled.

I’ve installed the PPAPI flash version, and when going to youtube’s HTML5 page, H.264 and WebM VP8 are unavailable, and videos in youtube load in flash, even though I’ve set them to use html5 video.

But if I disable the flash plugin in opera:plugins, now H.264 and VP8 are available again and youtube videos play using html5 player.

There seems to be a conflict between PPAPI flash player and proprietary media types.

I’m using Opera Next on OS X Mavericks.

• L33t4opera

The first Opera beta: 25.0.1599.41527 ;-)

• L33t4opera

@Moderators: Could you tell me please, why you removed my comment, and also I was going to reply to another comment in the same thread?
Please do not remove comments without any warning, and explanation, if they are clearly not against rules, could you do this?

• icetom

they removed your comment mentioning the beta, and my comment also.

• L33t4opera

Hi Icetom, yep, I know, and that is the reason, why I wrote new comment above, regarding this issue.

• nanana1

It happened to me before too.
Mods will usually remove any comment not related to this topic : This thread is about Opera Next and you made a post about Opera Beta, so it’s removed.
Sometimes I think Mods don’t like comments about their new builds before they announced it in their blog.

• https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

Discussing the next release is not on-topic for this release. Links to the next release is also not relevant for this release. (The forums is, however, open for discussing upcoming releases.)

Sorry, but we do not want to encourage people to poke around on the servers and share direct links as we are finalizing releases. Releases may be withdrawn if we find issues during the final distribution testing.

• L33t4opera

Hi Daniel, thanks for the explanation, I understand, however:
1. This is still annoying, when you remove the comment, which is not against the rules, in such unpleasant way, don’t you agree?
2. How it is not relevant to the topic, if probably this is the same product, but only with changed name, right?
“DNA-20341 [Windows] Rename Opera Next to Opera beta – WP1″ – the source link.

• Vux777

my next won’t update…maybe beta is replacement for dev stream
edit: it’s only autoupdate

• L33t4opera

Hi Vux 777, maybe, but I was just a bit surprised, and annoyed, that my comment has been removed in such unpleasant way, cus I think, that I didn’t wrote anything wrong (against the rules) ;-)

• Leonardo Gomes

I guess it’s just a test build, not something that will be released to the public.

• L33t4opera

Yep, it seems like some more testing, before 25 will reach Next channel (aka beta), and then probably soon later, the first new 26, will arrive in the developer stream ;-)

• icetom

maybe you should start doing the release in the correct order. not put the file on the server everyone can access before announcing it.

• Vux777

so, while on topic…
which channel is going to be upgraded to beta?
next or dev?

• Leonardo Gomes

Next, which is the beta channel. Now it will be easier for people to understand that.

• Vux777

I liked “next” more…
beta is so …last century :)

• Leonardo Gomes

I likev”Next” too but i think that many people seem to not be able to associate Next with beta.

• Vux777

yea, for them Next was 15+ (on blink)

• A. R.

tab stacking or some improvment to manage tabs on taskbar.

• Marko Koivuniemi

I like to use latest version as my main browser and I have installed Opera, Opera next and Opera developer – when developer version is promoted to next I’ll update next version and then copy profile folder content from developer to next. Now it’s interesting do I have to installe yet another version of Opera – called Opera beta. I’ll hope not. ;-)

• Nekomajin43

Next is beta.

• ayespy

Next Next is Beta. Current Next is Next. Developer is now developer (a distinction without a difference) and Stable is, by all accounts, stable on most systems. And unaccountably, Opera is not an opera at all – not even an operetta, because it’s not a performance, even though its main focus is performance. This is all very confusing.

• A. R.

able to manually to stash… but i guess that comes with BOOKMARKS!!!!

• A. R.

When is 25 promoted to NEXT? So that I’ll remember ebale bookmark flags.

• Nedos N

I dont need crap like this. I have switch to FF, because i need synchronization. Opera dont have sync. In last almost year i try so many browsers, and opera is stil crap without sync.

• Wraith

Syncronization is part of any modern browser but they say is still in development, over a year has passed and is still a work in progress, is a shame.

• Jonathan Aanesen

As sync is coming hand in hand with bookmarks it’s being worked hard on. As of now sync works perfectly fine for bookmarks and I don’t have a problem with it at all. It’s a shame you’ve decided to quit using Opera, but it was nice to have you while you were here :)

• Dark Magician

When is tab stacking coming?

• Leonardo Gomes

Atm there isn’t even an evidence that it will come.

• Lacedaemon

I think he already knows that, he “asks” for that in form of a rhetorical question :)

• L33t4opera

New update: 24.0.1558.51, the change log, and the announcement.
