Since yesterday, we’ve gotten a number of incoming reports that selected YouTube videos no longer play in Opera. We’ve investigated this further and it seems to be a recently introduced codec selection issue on YouTube’s side. We’ve contacted YouTube about this: their friendly engineers are on the case, and will release a fix for the problem soon.

In the meantime, we’ve released a browser.js patch that works around the issue by forcing YouTube to always use the Flash player for playing videos. You should get the file 2-3 minutes after restarting Opera. We will remove this patch once YouTube’s fix is released.

Let us know if this doesn’t work for you.

  • SimonPieman

Good to see New Opera still has the browser.js site patching capability, however, I guess the list is ALOT shorter than it used to be 🙂

    • Marcin Mitek

Indeed, it is way shorter, currently 11 active patches. 🙂

      • Dark Magician

I’ve already patched it myself with Magic Actions for YouTube.

  • L33t4opera

Thanks for your effort, I appreciate it 😉

  • Cryio

I’ve been driven mad by this thing. I just though that Youtube was broken, not that it was Opera’s fault. Anyway, really great news. I can happily fully use Opera again !

    • Leonardo Gomes

      And YT was broken.

  • Thanks.

  • If you are having issues, you can go into %APPDATA%/Opera Software/Opera/ on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera/ and delete the file ”browser.js”. Starting up Opera without this file will force-update it on launch.

    • al_ghul

thanks, youtube now works, both on O18 and O20 dev:)

  • Emanuele

In my notebook the autoupdate feature doesn’t work (I reported the problem lot of times then I loose any hopes) so I will not receive the updated browser.js

  • 0.o

Any updates on the gifbug / any alternate available patch? in my work gifs are too important i cant use these opera versions until they are fixed ;/ at least tell me you have some kind of idea whats going on ?

    • Marcin Mitek

Hi, probably some Chromium issue, still investigating.

    • Helge Andre Gjølme

I understand your concern, gifs are very important for the internet. It’s a high priority issue.

      • Marcin Mitek

Helge is not lying. It’s P1 🙂 We love gifs.

    • Marcin Mitek

Private question: what do you do for living? Cause working with gifs sound like… you know, cool job, like Lego master builder or jet pilot 🙂

      • 0.o

My job is actually pretty boring in many aspects 😀 I’m just a website and serverside-function guy 😀 Lately i’ve been working within a website + forums heavily affected by gifs (actually a site made for gifs) and i am also making some gifs for the site, overall code after code but also understanding and testing out gifs is very important, thats why i have to test new stuff i’m making to the website with another browser atm (dont worry its Opera 12 😛 )

Tl;dr; I make GIFs a bit but mostly work for a site made for GIFs

        • Vux777

          aahaaa
so you are administrating those Tmblr porn blogs ?
          😀 😀 😀

          ….just kidding

          • 0.o

😀 It’s a brand new website without any registered domain yet (so you connect with IP and have to be on whitelist 😀 )

        • Marcin Mitek

Good to know, thanks for sharing 🙂

  • Kamen Minkov

Ironically enough, it works in Opera 12.

    • Helge Andre Gjølme

Opera 12 doesn’t support more codecs than 12, it was YouTube that started serving different content to Opera 12 and Opera 15+

      • Filip Jabłoński

Lol… Really? Then why opera 15-18 can’t open mobile youtube (m.youtube.com after changing UA-string) video (mp4/html5 player) while opera 12 can?

New opera sux ass – every one knows it. Just look @ google play comments for mobile versions and look up some comments outside of opera.com.

        • Eric

I’m not sure where all the hatred is coming from. The problem (and solution) were clearly stated in a very nice and open manner.

I’ve had much more success with page compatibility using Opera 15+ than I have with Opera 12 and below. That’s the entire reason they abandoned Presto. No one developed against it and it cost them more time and money to maintain it than to make a really good browser that already has an accepted engine.

Then again, I don’t expect logic from people who expect businesses to stay in business doing something that loses money.

          • Filip Jabłoński

I’m sure that many users could even pay for old opera. That new one is not even near the old one’s – usability and config options. For eg. Yesterday friend had problem with his HSPA Internet Connection. Problem made by opera_autoupdater.exe – is there anywhere option to disable it? No? Screw your data plan… screw everything.

I’m getting scared of what’s happening in the world of IT. New unusable opera, windows 8 made by “engineers” with Arts Degree which probably will never use it to work. New android applications with UX taken form 90’s (eg. commands in google maps, skype – where you have to click many times to quit app…)

I mean all that “new” stuff – yeah. It’s pretty, clean and minimalistic, but it’s not made 2 use.

And where my hatred comes from? I hate when company which has made my favorite software – thinking I’m too dumb to configure my stuff. Why they’re not making smth like “advanced options” anymore? ’cause now – it’s made for dumb ppl who couldn’t read about adv.settings and made problems out of it.

            Idiocracy

          • Eric

One (not so well put) example of someone’s phone turns into general criticism. You don’t even state which advanced settings you need. Are they supposed to read your mind? Have you even visited opera:settings?

In any case, this discussion is purely academic. I just don’t understand the hatred when there are choices out there. It doesn’t make sense to keep shouting at someone that isn’t listening, especially when the shouting is nonsensical.

          • Filip Jabłoński

Not a phone. It was a PC. I said “.exe”… But I can see you’re one of that users new opera is made for (if U couldn’t even figure it out that problem was on PC).

          • Eric

So a tethered phone using HSPA couldn’t have been the situation?

Why are you pointing at one statement and then trying to insult my intelligence? I’ve provided some very valid criticisms of what you’re posting, and you still haven’t given any specifics.

I am not a “new user”. But then, at this point I’m not sure what anyone can say to get you to think otherwise.

I hope you find solace in your closed mindedness.

          • Filip Jabłoński

            “example of someone’s phone”
It was not an example of someones phone, but example of “fresh’n’funky” opera that do not even have option to turn off autoupdater…

How it’s made that old opera was browser with most advanced UI and very unique “feel” from using it and new one lacks even basic browser features – like bookmarks?

          • Eric

I haven’t used bookmarks in years. Does that make me “new” or have I just moved on from an obsolete feature?

          • Filip Jabłoński

Moved on from obsolete feature to what?
U had a feature and now you don’t. Got anything else for exchange?

          • Eric

Tabs, Speed Dial, etc. I moved on because my ability to get to the websites I visited most became more efficient by having a combination of the following:

Speed Dial gets me to my most visited pages, which requires 1 click and no scrolling (I keep less than 9 pages on speed dial).

If I need to get a page at a later time but don’t need to access it multiple times in the future, I keep it open in a tab.

If I need to find a page again, I probably found it via a Google search. My ability to find things via Google is better than my ability to navigate through folders and find the page title of a webpage I visited 6 months.

Again, Bookmarks are obsolete for me. Obsolete doesn’t mean it has to have been replaced by anything.

          • Filip Jabłoński

Ok… Obsolete for you… But what about all the other stuff?

          • Eric

Sorry, I refuse to debate like this. I asked some very valid questions of you earlier and you’ve turned the entire thing around on me and somehow are questioning my adoption vs. your lack of adoption. I guess our premises are just different.

Enjoy your day and I hope you get what you desire out of future releases.

          • Alaknár

@disqus_bPvdhfSb8M:disqus – so what you’re saying is “Opera is a good browser because I use less than 9 bookmarks”?

            Are you serious?

I have about 300 bookmarks on my Opera 12.6. I don’t use all of them ona daily basis but I need all of them. I have about 50 of them with assigned nicknames and 12 inserted into the Speed Dial.

How am I supposed to transit to the new Opera without nicknames? Hell, even the Ctrl+[Speed Dial Number] shortcut doesn’t work rendering the new Speed Dial next to useless for me!

So what is the new Opera? It’s Google Chrome without the Chrome Store support and bookmarks (yes, even Chrome has those).

In what universe is Opera a good browser then?

          • Eric

No, that is not what I said. Please read my posts again.

          • Alaknár
          • Eric

Nowhere did I say “Opera is a good browser because I use less than 9 bookmarks”

            You even used quotes!

            Like I said, please reread.

          • Alaknár

Oh, I get it now. Here you go:
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraphrase

          • Eric

Good lord there are a lot of trolls on here.

I’m telling you that you misread what I typed. Please reread and re-evaluate when I wrote.

          • Alaknár

Only who’s the troll here? Did you read the Wikipedia article?

I’m not saying you literally wrote “Opera is a good browser because I use less than 9 bookmarks”! It was a paraphrase of your:

“I moved on because my ability to get to the websites I visited most became more efficient by having a combination of the following:

Speed Dial gets me to my most visited pages, which requires 1 click and no scrolling (I keep less than 9 pages on speed dial).

If I need to get a page at a later time but don’t need to access it multiple times in the future, I keep it open in a tab.

If I need to find a page again, I probably found it via a Google search. My ability to find things via Google is better than my ability to navigate through folders and find the page title of a webpage I visited 6 months.

Again, Bookmarks are obsolete for me. Obsolete doesn’t mean it has to have been replaced by anything.”

            Is that clear now?

          • Eric

You are the troll. You insist on not taking my word that I didn’t mean what you said, but I honestly believe that you know you were giving a strawman argument.

Yet you continue to dodge that fact and go on with other things.

Have you re-read my posts yet?

          • Alaknár

This is starting to get ridiculous.
Are you seriously asking me if I re-read your posts right after I quote the whole part I’m referring to?

          • Eric

“This is starting to get ridiculous.”

Its been ridiculous since you misquoted me.

          • Alaknár

I never quoted you. Learn the difference between a quote and a paraphrase.

          • jacksonsquire

You don’t paraphrase with QUOTation marks.

  • Rodrigo Mello

    Obrigado! Thanks!

  • FrankyBoy1234

Switching to another engine to prevent site incompatibilities (and do away with such “hacks” as browser.js) … and one of the biggest sites breaks … oh the irony

    • So there’s no irony here. Using Blink has drastically improved site compatibility overall. The occasional problem every now and then doesn’t change that.

      • FrankyBoy1234

i for one did not experience any real problems with presto…

        • Emanuele

because Presto has no problem with the real, normal, internet … it has problems only with some heavy web-app/socials like Facebook or Gmail … To me this has not been a problem since I don’t use none of these stupid social networks but I use instead lots of real websites, so Presto to me is just perfect, but I understand that now that Opera want to target all the mass of people that use internet nowadays, the switch to Chromium is a good thing (while the very stupid thing is that they dropped the entire browser/internet suite with all the features, to give us a simple stupid webpage viewer)

          • FrankyBoy1234

also cant confirm any facebook, gmail, or youtube problems – generally had only very few problems (mostly with some exotic sites where every 2nd line in the stylesheet starts with “–webkit-” ;)) until the switch. Now it gets noticeable that many new sites dont test with Opera any more because they asume Opera = Blink.

    • Nekomajin42

Compare the file sizes and you will be enlightened!

      • FrankyBoy1234

i find it funny that my post from 10 days ago suddenly spikes so much interest 😉
anyhow, for me the biggest problem has always been browser sniffing, not any incompatibilities. and yes, I even had browser.js totally disabled for some time without noticing much difference

  • This patch youtube fix is for all 3 last opera versions ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

If you mean 18, 19 and 20, i think so. For all Opera Blink versions i guess.

  • blu2

    Thank’s for the patch (:

But don’t remove the patch once YouTube’s fix is released, because Opera Blink has not only the problem that some Youtube videos don’t work, since weeks we can’t choose resolution for Youtube videos when they played in HTML5 – so it’s good that the patch forces Youtube to play display the videos in flash, because so we can choose the resolution and watch in HD.

  • _artem_

or you just install YTO (youtube options) from addons.opera.com and force to use flash there 🙂 that’s what I did, after I noticed that youtube uses html5 with only up to 480p quality but at the same time when using flash it has also 720-1080p

  • romath

Videos play, but there are no controls except implicit play/pause inside the video itself. They play at the volume of system sound setting, which in my case with a dac in line is loud, too loud to use You Tube. So as far as I’m concerned, the patch is insufficient for now.

    • Leonardo Gomes

The patch is for other problem. For this one, set your system dpi to 100%.

Btw, which version are you using? I don’t have this problem on Opera 20.

      • romath

Opera Next, i.e., 19. My system dpi is at 115% out of necessity. No way I’m switching it for this, but then I’m still using 12.16 as my standard browser. Plus, sounds like it was corrected for v20 and so it will be coming to Next soon. Thanks,

  • opera 12 here works normal in youtube, no need of any patch ou .js

    • Marco

“Opera 12 doesn’t support more codecs than 15+, it was YouTube that started serving different content to Opera 12 and Opera 15+”

Helge explained earlier in this blog.

  • 0.o

This one is pretty weird but when using Vbulletin forums latest Opera versions sometimes tend to hide the last row of text. Literally hide, you can see the text only when you are quoting someones previous post. I dont know if this is at Vbulletin or your end

  • Marco

To the one that moaning about Opera releases are only Chromium updates.

Opera is a part of Chomium/Blink:

I Have been reporting Youtube issues for weeks. But got so frustrated with Youtube issues that I installed Magic Actions for Youtube: Problem solved!
    Cheers.

  • Tüütlüm Ohaya

    Thanks for the patch (:

    • al_ghul

thanks a lot! it seems to work! I’ve blocked temporal workaround extension youtube center – and it works, both – on O18 and O20 dev. i deleted first browser.js files in boths, adn restarted them, as somebody from crew mentioned it. BIG THANKS and Merry Christmas to You all crew!

I have constant problems with the browser Opera .

    1. Webcam constantly hangs on Skype a few minutes after opening the Opera 18. Microphone built- in camera does not work disconnected.

2 . Opera works very poorly with the visual editor in sites on the engine UCOZ (http://blog.ucoz.ru/blog/vizualnyj_redaktor_materialov/2011-01-17-173)

3 . If you make Opera the default browser , it opens very long link that runs from the chat on Skype . For example, if Chrome to make your default browser , the links will open faster.

4 . You can not completely remove the downloaded file downloads , only removes the record of it in the Opera browser . No buttons to remove a load ( at the arrow )

    5. Where you removed the section preview pages before printing?!

    6. Why can not import bookmarks from another browser in Opera. Such as IE, Mozilla, Chrome. I, for example, 4 Opera browser 12 version (different versions, nekst and stable, x64, x32) How do I import bookmarks from them?! Why not do these functions?

    7. When released an update (critical update) for Opera browser 12.16 (eg version 12.17)

    8. Opera 18 works very poorly with Google release services, such as Google Translate. Ceases to translate input test!

I’m using a hight resolution display and have higher then normal DPi settings in Windows 7. Youtube video’s are “zoomed” in, so I’m missing the bottom and right portions of the screen(video off-center and unable to use the controls at the bottom). Using latest Opera Next.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It seems fixed on Opera 20.

      • Mark Lavrijsen

Tnx! Wasn’t sure if I was the only one with this problem.

  • gustavo rincan

youtube it doesen’t work for me

  • Since latest Opera update 12.16, Facebook doesn’t autoupdate newsfeed any more. Now I have to physically reload the page.

  • duhduhduh0

Why not give users an option to opt to use Flash or HTML5?

    • That would be YouTube’s duty but instead they broke their own website for Opera users because that’s higher priority in Google’s to-do list.

  • lassekongo83

I kind of dislike this browser.js “fix”. I use a custom userscript in TamperMonkey that makes all embedded videos on other sites use the html5 player. I do this because loading a forum thread full of embedded flash-videos is an enormous performance issue. Making them all html5 increases the performance of these threads immensely. This browser.js “fix” broke all that.

    little OT
Disqus started to inject ads in comments
Will this blog be affected with that or… ?!

Well, no ads here so far and i hope it stays this way.

The developers of Opera complained they were spending time in Opera 12 with “patches”. Returned with the patches again in Opera 15+? I don’t understanding…this is getting messy.

    • Daniel Nebdal

From what I heard, this also affected chromium – YT simply sent the wrong video codec to a bunch of browsers. The youtube people have confirmed it as a (top-priority) bug on their side, so it’s not really opera’s fault this time.

    • Site patches were just one of the things we were spending far too much time on. It also affected Presto itself.

Comparing that to a single patch for a single site is not really valid.

    • Nekomajin42

      Compare the browser.js sizes!

    • nanana1

Patch when it is needed May seems messy but appropriate.

  • senna_4ever

I have been using You tube for years downloading from opera. For the last several weeks (maybe since last update – now on 47) there are NO BUTTONS in You Tube for downloading. I restarted Opera and ire-installed Opera with no luck. I have extensions loaded and enabled. What do do about this?
