Good morning, afternoon or evening to you all,

Our ever-connecting world allows us to network with people and events all across the globe. This can mean, however, that a faraway time zone will confuse you. It’s never good to be late for an online conference call!

We continue to improve our converter tools in today’s Opera 48 developer update. We recently introduced 14 different unit converters and made it easier to use. Now, we have developed a time zone converter.

Whenever you need to know what 14:33:24 CEST, 7:00 PM MDT or 12:40 GMT time is on your local clock, just select the text and Opera will check your time.

This also works for a variety of written formats for dates. You can try out these examples here: 03-02-2009 9:12 PDT, or 30-06-2003 10:09 GMT.

The latest build supports 26 different time zones:

  • PST / PDT: Pacific Standard / Daylight Time
  • MST / MDT: Mountain Standard / Daylight Time
  • CST / CDT: Central Standard / Daylight Time
  • EST / EDT: Eastern Standard / Daylight Time
  • AST / ADT: Atlantic Standard Time / Daylight Time
  • NST / NDT: Newfoundland Standard Time / Daylight Time
  • GMT: Greenwich Mean Time
  • BST: British Summer Time
  • MET: Middle Europe Time
  • CET / CEST: Central Europe Time / Daylight (Summer) Time
  • EET / EEST: Eastern Europe Time / Daylight (Summer) Time
  • WET / WEST: Western Europe Time / Daylight (Summer) Time
  • JST: Japan Standard Time
  • KST: Korean Standard Time
  • IST: Indian Standard Time
  • MSK: Moscow Standard Time

Your local time is determined by your system’s time settings.

Other highlights:

  • Crash related to prerendered pages from last build is now fixed.
  • We fixed a nasty bug with a nonworking left click on macOS. There should be no problems now, even with clicking on very thin tabs.
  • @Alexs, we’ve got ‘Black stripes around windows’ fixed on Linux. Check if it’s fine for you!
  • We fixed some missing translation for ‘all bookmarks’ and ‘unsorted bookmarks’.
  • Search pop up is visible again on Linux.
  • It’s possible to select entire text from search box on Window and Linux.
  • Import of bookmarks from Yandex Browser added.
  • Chromium updated to 61.0.3141.7.

Known issues:

  • Crash on startup with old sidebar settings in Preferences file

Nice Opera Developer 48.0.2652.0 update despite the summer holidays break !

  • Ghirahim

I absolutely LOVE those converters. Excellent idea!!!

  • ga_pechorin

i asked for that! opera is the best software company EVER.

  • Hans Hansen

Missing German translation for “trash” and “All bookmarks” (bookmarks section), it should be “Papierkorb” and “Alle Lesezeichen”

    • Thanks for pointing that out. Final translations are in place before Opera goes stable, developer and beta starts with english texts first. In this case however it looks like a bug.

      • Nekomajin43

The Hungarian translation of the Settings page has a few weird translations for years. I’ve already reported them a few times.

        • We’re not always happy with the translation we receive. We can’t judge all languages, but the ones we can could sometimes get some improvements.

Maybe it would be worth doing a language fix-up during vacation?
Of course your (community) input would be crucial.

          • Nekomajin43

In the Hungarian translation, there are a few strings that are out of context. Those may be fine in a text file with the strings, but I am sure that the translator did not check the context.

          • That’s the most typical source of misuse, no context or too little context. Sometimes the translation is _correct_ but weird or a bit out of place.

  • Hans Hansen

As far as the converter is concerned I’m posting my comment as a text file, because of your spam filter:

    • Thanks for checking those cases. Time conversion is quite tricky to .et it right. Please ensure that you’re running the latest version 48.0.2652.0, previous one included time converters as well, but they were not always correct. You might have found some other glitches.

I’m reposting your comments here for convenience, we’ll check everything asap:

      1. I don’t get it, why does Opera convert 31-06-1973 GMT to 01.07.73 CET in my case? I live in Germany,
it should be just one hour difference (resp. 2h in the summertime) and not one day:

      2. I also can’t understand why Opera tells me in another example that between GMT and CET there are 2 hours difference,
and in the example above it’s only 1 hour (see picture in point 1):

      3. Furthermore when I select “7:00 PM MST”, the conversion tells me that the date is “tomorrow”. Maybe it is a little bit misleading,
because Opera can’t know whether I selected a current date or a date that was some days ago. (The German translation for “tomorrow” is also missing

      • Hans Hansen

Thank you for your answer, I used the latest 48.0.2652.0 version on Win10 x64 v1703. My system time is set to UTC+01:00 (Berlin) .

        • Regarding point 2:
For me 12:40 GMT is converted to 14:40 as well. Right now we’re not CET but CEST – 2 hours difference.

          Check current GMT time:

Local system settings are taken into account, for all date time manipulations.

          • Hans Hansen

And in point 1 you also have two hours difference? (That’s what I am talking about because it’s both a conversion from GMT in the summertime, but in point 1 I only get one hour difference).

          • Firstly I fixed the date issue. It was incorrect date, there is no such day as 31st of June 🙂 This means the conversion was correct, 31st June is 1st July after all. Regarding time conversion there is a glitch. Selecting whole date with time converts GMT to CET while selecting only hour converts GMT to CEST. We’ll handle that.

          • Hans Hansen

Haha, I did not recognize this date doesn’t exist, now it works. 😛
Thank you for solving the riddle.

          • I just solved the other one too. This time it is a history lesson. And why writing dates handling library is more difficult than one can imagine.

CEST is a relatively new thing and it wasn’t used in Germany nor in Poland in 1973.
This means converter did a correct thing translating 30-06-1973 10:09 GMT to CET. We know the interesting details now 🙂 Not to confuse other readers I updated blog post to use more recent dates.

          • Hans Hansen

Nice! 😀 Well spotted! Now everything is comprehensible. 🙂

Why Opera can not convert this prices: 850 ₽ or 1199 ₸

    • Tina

We currently support only few currencies which are provided by

      • Hans Hansen

Yes, but the sign “₽” is the official symbol for the Russian ruble since 2013 (Unicode: U+20BD). So if you suppport “RUB” you should also support its official sign “₽”, since you also support € and $ for Euro and Dollar.

        • Tina

We aren’t currently expanding list of supported symbols, but if we do we will try to get ₽ covered.

        • Tina

This bug will be fixed in the next dev version

    • Thanks for reporting.

  • Nekomajin43

Btw, you should come up with a nice new name for the search popup. I mean really, a creative name would be fine even for marketing purposes.

    • Any suggestions? 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

Smart popup is too simple. But I will give it a thought.

Anyway, it would be a nice gesture to make it an official fan brain storming, and a poll with the best ideas to decide the final name.

        • Simple names are good. It’s to easy to over-promise with bad one. I guess you could find some examples.

Input is always welcome, but we can’t promise that we’ll use something. There are lots of things that need to be taken into account when naming takes place.

          • Nekomajin43

Apart from the name, if you take a look at the image in this post, it looks weird with this horizontal layout. It was fine with the initial two options, but it would be better to convert the popup into a vertical menu. It would have more space for unit and currency conversions.

          • We looked at different designs recently, including vertical ones. So far there is still too little content (and just text) to justify such changes. Note that “Share…” menu item is MacOS specific so for Windows it’s just Search/Copy and occasional converted value. However if we keep on extending search popup we might need a redesign.

          • Nekomajin43

            OK, a few other remarks:

            – The popup on the demo images looks much better with the rounded corners and less padding. Is it the OS X design?

            – The hover effect looks bad when it reaches the spike of the popup: Can you add a small margin to the label, so its background does not reach the border of the popup.

            – Any chance to change the colors to fit to th context menus?

            – I think the source unit and currency is absolutely unnecessary to show in the popup. It’s right there on the page. And in the current state, it can be misleading. For example: 2 miles will be shown as “mile -> 3.2 km”, which looks like and implicit 1 before the mile. So show the source value too, or remove the source unit too. I vote for the latter.

            – The last, but most important: It would be very handy to have an up to date list of every supported unit, currency and date format. It should be linked in the Settings as part of the Help.

          • – Yes, it’s OS X design
            – Well spotted, it should be improved
            – We thought of that, so far we stick with dark one
            – Can you point me to actual test case? Btw. Source or target units are shown if there is a potential ambiguity, for instance we use US gallons ( Additional information is included if more text is highlighted by user and converter tries to look for a valid value to convert. if found then input is included as well.
            – Yes, we’ll compile the list once it’s finalised.

          • Nekomajin43

OK, the ambiguity is a good point. But in this case, you should always include the source value too, not just the unit, because the implicit 1 is ambiguous too.

For example, find US$ in the 4th paragraph in this article:
If you highlight more text, the popup shows 1,17 USD -> 315,32 Ft. But if you highlight only “US$1.1743” between the brackets, the popup shows USD -> 315,32 Ft, which means 1 USD is equal to 315,32 Ft, which is not true. I think it is a major problem.

So if you want to show the source, then show the whole source, value and unit.

          • The ambiguity introduces problems.

There is no problem when more text is highlighted and user needs to be sure what was taken as input. We can leave that case.

On the other hand if you precisely select value to convert, you can see what you are dealing with, then we don’t need to show value itself. Problems appear when the unit is not precise. Using your example, this is what I’m getting:

            Selected: US$1.1743
            Popup: PLN4.34
It’s clear that were talking about USD, plain value is enough.

            Selected: $1.1743
            Popup: USD -> PLN4.34

This time it’s not clear if that’s USD, that’s why we include information that it was converted from USD. Exact value is still being highlighted underneath. But I can see that it might cause confusion for some users. We’ll give it a though.

          • Nekomajin43

Your second example is not something that MIGHT cause confusion. If you show only a unit, without any value, then it means the value is 1. In this case, the popup implies that 1 USD is 4,34 PLN, which is misleading.

You overdo it again. Your point with the ambiguous input is valid. There are cases when the input must be shown. But there is no reason (except UI design) to hide the input, so just show the whole input, value and unit together every time.

          • Herr Pietrus

            Vertical will be worse IMHO.
Perhaps if they add a few more options, but now?…

    • Innocent like a virgin

But please do not rename it to new lovers’ t-shirt, or professional toilet invigilator.

  • Alexs

It’s now fixed, thank you. (Siduction 64bit/Xfce)

HELP! Chromecast does not work for me with the latest stable release of Opera. In opera:/cast I see only a white screen. In the developer version, Chromecast is detected, but the transmission does not work.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I’m not sure if it’s already supported.

      • Nekomajin43

Why is it accessible then? It’s in the context menu too.

        • Leonardo Gomes

It has been in the context menu since a while but I don’t remember it even had worked.

          • Nekomajin43

That’s the problem. It’s not the first time in the past few months when not implemented features were available in the stable branch.

          • Leonardo Gomes

The extension stopped working and it broke chromecast support in Opera.

          • Nekomajin43

And it would be a challenging task to remove it from the menu, right?

          • It shouldn’t be difficult but somehow we have missed it. We will try to resolve it now that we got it on focus.

          • Nekomajin43

Things like this and the useless win10 color switch make a bad user experience.

“We fixed some missing translation for ‘all bookmarks’ and ‘unsorted bookmarks’.”
In polish version I still have “All bookmarks”. Unsorted bookmarks? I do not have such an option. When I add a new bookmark I can not put it in this group.

    • Herr Pietrus

Unsorted Bookmarks are not available on fresh profiles since version… since version in which they were removed 😀 But if you have the profile with Unsorted Bookmarks saved they will be still displayed in manager.

      • jojoPL1987

I’m using Opera on the Chrome engine from the beginning (Opera on the previous engine I also used before) but some time ago sorted the bookmarks from this folder. Why did they do that?

        • Herr Pietrus

They consider Unsorted Bookmarks useless since you can create such folder on your own. I suppose so.

I notice different behaviours in my Macbook (macOS Sierra) after upgrade – switching tab is more difficult because you must click outside of icon of tab before anything happens. I have so many tabs that tab bar is mainly just icons so switching tab is difficult.

    • You sure you got latest developer build? This issue should be fixed on 48.0.2652.0.

      • Marko Koivuniemi

Sorry. I thought I have latest developer build but it was not. It works now.

        • Ok. Though that for some reason fix could have been not working in some cases. 🙂

  • Are you guys still working on Chrome Cast support?

Add “go to link” when selecting a web address

    • Leonardo Gomes

What’s wrong with ‘Go to web address’?

      • If you haven’t seen this problem, I can explain in more details. Opera, exactly in the same way as Chrome, works with web addresses in two different ways.

If you right-click the HTML link, you have three options:
        * Open link in new tab
        * Open link in new window
        * Open link in private window
This is quite handy, you can always choose a most suitable way to open a link. In most cases, the first option is the best: link is opened in the tab just right of current tab.

But if you right-click a selected text with web address, which hasn’t been converted to an HTML link (quite often case on some forums), you have only one option to open this address in web browser:
        * Go to web address
which opens the selected address in the current tab. Opera doesn’t have an option to open such address in the new tab, that’s a problem! I think that some AI (much less than AI needed to currency and TZ converter) could solve this problem and offer more handy way(s) for such links.

        • Alan Gonzalez

          Select ( without link format
Search | Copy | Go to

      • Alan Gonzalez

Many times the web link is written as a simple text, and not remarked as link, bone, that can not be accessed directly, you have to select that text (link), copy that text (link) and paste it into a new tab. I simply want that when selecting that piece of text that is a link, I get the option to “go to”

        • Alan Gonzalez

          Select ( without link format
Search | Copy | Go to

        • Leonardo Gomes

Why not select the text, right click and use ‘go to web address’?

      • Alan Gonzalez

        Select ( without link format
Search | Copy | Go to

        • Leonardo Gomes

Ah, in the pop-up. Could be interesting.

    • PakSae

But search pop-up may get larger if keep adding something useful.
First something new must be added to context menu and search pop-up must be editable based on it, so it will be subset of context menu. ex; Unit converter must be added to context menu.
The search pop-up can be considered as frequently used subset of context menu.

I want also “Enable context menu when selecting text” option.

  • Daniel Schaf

Opera is still missing the old #extended-lazy-session-loading flag. There are several threads in the forum asking for this feature to return.

Having many tabs open, starting Opera these days is a painful experience. Loading one tab at a time might be better than loading all at once. But with #extended-lazy-session-loading, Opera would only load a tab, when the user activated it. This behaviour decreases start up time, reduces internet traffic, reduces CPU hogging by Opera, and greatly reduces the memory usage of Opera!
Sessions are much more dynamic than bookmarks and they are organised by users in a specific way/order/groups. So it doesn’t make sense to bookmark currently unused tabs and close said tabs.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Is there a problem with Facebook today or is it Opera? I’m going crazy with waiting for the pages loading in Facebook!

    • Hans Hansen

loads fine in Germany, maybe a problem with your router or your provider?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Facebook seems OK here, pages are loading normally.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Can you please try to open

        • Leonardo Gomes

It took a while for the posts in that page to show up here.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Thank you, Leonardo. Seems to be a problem with this special group/page in Facebook.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Opera just closed the Facebook tab and told me “Insufficient memory”.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Try checking with Opera’s task manager if there is any memory leak that may have been triggered by something in your timeline.
BTW, do you use any extensions?

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes, I use some extensions. 15. I have checked Opera’s task manager. Facebook uses more memory than every other task.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I would try first with extensions disabled.

Stupidity is added rather than improving vpn and blocking ads

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, I’d like to ask you to fill a survey to somehow quantify the feature requests:

We are closing to 200 answers!

Some features (bookmarks export, expanding the number of recently closed tabs in the tab menu, unit converter) are already being developed. (They will be removed from the list once they reach the stable branch.)

The classic lazy loading is new on the list. If you have already submitted your votes, just open the link again, and you can vote for the new additions.

I know it’s not representative, but it may help to show the trends and the top most wanted features. We’ve got some positive words from the devs, no promises though.

If you find anything missing from the list, please comment here or in the forum:
