A couple weeks ago we launched Opera One R2, and today we’ve got exciting news: we’re partnering with Spotify to make it easier for you to listen to your favorite music. 

So, what does Norwegian Opera have to do with Swedish Spotify? Well, as part of this Scandinavian collaboration, Spotify is becoming the default music streaming service within the upgraded Music Player in Opera One R2. Let’s face it, streaming music on our phones while using our computers is something many of us do, but it isn’t a great solution. We know because we asked, and 66% of you said that’s what you most often do. But it just adds one more device to look at – one more source of distraction – and implies two different sources of audio to manage: your phone and your computer. So, we decided to do something about that, and make it easier than ever to stream music from inside your browser. 

With Opera One R2, you can now detach the upgraded Music Player from the sidebar to drag it around and place it wherever you want – a game changer for you all who regularly listen to music at your desktop computer. Now, you don’t have to hop around between tabs, apps, and devices, to queue that next song – the music controls are right there in front of you, allowing you to fully focus on other things. 

Music, Podcasts, & Soundscapes while browsing

To use the new Music Player, make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of the browser. Hover over the Spotify icon in the sidebar and a popout player will appear. Then, you can drag the Music Player around your screen and place it wherever you like. 

Opera’s features are designed to work well together, so when you’re using the Music Player and open a video, the music will subtly pause while it’s playing and resume when finished. The same applies when you jump into a call from the browser.

So, with this collaboration, you can seamlessly listen to your favorite content from Spotify while you browse. If you’re constantly working on your desktop browser, then that playlist that gets you through the day is always at hand. If you want to read and drown out that commotion at the coffee shop, then relaxing music or ambient noise is right there. Or maybe you want to listen to the next episode of your favorite podcast while you search the web. Well now, it’s all there at your fingertips.

To be honest, I’ve been writing all of this while listening to my favorite Swedish band – sorry to disappoint you, but it’s not Abba, they’re called Sabaton – and it’s been really pleasant to have their Music Player on my second screen. I’ve been able to pause when necessary, skip a song, or repeat that one that keeps me focused and energetic – shameless shoutout to “Carolus Rex.” So, give it a try and take control – literally – of your music.
