We recently released Opera with built-in VR video player and today there’s another update ready for you to test out.

Smoother videos on macOS

Opera 45 introduced significant performance improvements to video playback on Windows. Opera 49 makes videos better on macOS. You will get smoother playback, snappier seeking, high-resolution videos will load faster and the overall video experience should be noticeably better. The new solution has positive impact on both CPU and RAM usage, as well as power usage. Improvements are more visible when playing high resolution videos.

VK messenger added to sidebar

Opera comes with three messengers already: Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram. Today, VK joins that list. Users in Russia should see the icon instantly, while others need to right-click the sidebar to open the context menu and select it from the list. It’s worth reminding about the handy shortcut to show (and cycle through) messengers with ctrl + shift + m (⌘ + ⇧ + m macOS).

Others changes and fixes made in this build that are worth mentioning:

  • [Mac] Icons in the right corner of the address bar weren’t aligned.
  • Adblock/VPN pop ups were totally misplaced.
  • Fix for “My sources” in personal news.
  • Fix for cursor moving to the beginning of address bar.
  • Fixed typo in experiment’s name #personal-news-notifications.
  • Belarusian ruble (BYN) added to built-in currency converter.

The problem with personal news that manifested itself last Thursday is already fixed. However, your configured list of sources is gone. We have extended our set of automated tests to catch such a situation before it becomes a problem. It’s worth reminding that this is the developer channel, which is meant for testing the latest code and, unfortunately, such things can happen. Either be sure to do a manual backup of your whole profile, or stick to the stable branch. While you’ll be adding back your favorite sources, keep in mind that you can select sources from our catalog (over 8,300 sources), but in case something is missing you can just enter a site’s URL. If there’s any readable web feed, Opera will allow you to add it your sources. Alternatively, you can also paste a direct link to the web feed.

Chromium version 62.0.3202.18.

Installation links

Test machine: Macbook Pro 17-inch, Early 2011, Intel Core i7 2,2 GHz, 8 GB 1333 DDR3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB, Samsung EVO 840 SSD Drive 500 GB, macOS Sierra.
Test methodology: Laptop connected to power adapter, brightness set to 100%, volume to 50%, automatic graphics switching enabled. Three different videos were tested (480p H.264 AAC, 720p H.264 AAC, 1080p H.264 AAC). Each video was played with #media-avf-demuxer flag ON and OFF. Ten samples were taken using Activity monitor and iStat Menus tool for energy DC value. Each sample measured as:

  1. Run Opera with video opened in tab.
  2. After one minute of playback, gather CPU and memory usage from activity monitor and DC in value from iStats Menus (sensors tab).

Here are the raw results.

This Opera 49.0.2723.0 Developer release should make MacOS users happy :))

    • beBoss

      And why is that?

  • Eugene B.

The blog post link on the changelog page is wrong. Please fix it. 🙂

    • Nicely spotted. Fixed.

  • Matheus Bombonato

Gtalk would be a great addition to the messengers list.

    • pisarz1958

Their web app is terrible and I have no idea how anyone ever is going to implement it, but I’m all in on Hangouts being integrated into Opera. Please make it happen.

  • Eugene B.

Thank you guys for fixing DNA-63782 [Engine] Cursor moves to beginning of address field on links with target=”_blank”. The bug is finally gone! 🙂

    • You’re welcome, that was annoying one.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Great thanks for VK! Now this sidebar makes sense. I tried to make a simple extesion for sidebar with VK, but this requires knowledge in JS to bypass the anti-iframe limitations in VK, so I didn’t make it.

  • jojoPL1987

I still have suggestions for Snapshot. Can add the ability to take a screenshot of the entire page (including invisible parts if there is a scroll bar)?

  • Nekomajin43

Stop the spam! Implement general web panels!

  • Игорь Князев

Wanted say thanks for VK… Thanks! But then tried to login with Disqus and Opera instantly crashes, lol. Same with Google. So I think that’s why not so many comments 🙂 Crashed ~5 times in a row and I lost all my opened tabs (30+ tabs) 🙁 Made clean reinstall of Opera but no luck, it crashes. But at least I now have working sync wich was lost several updates back… Went to Disqus native page and login there to write this feed back.
    ps. Windows

    • You are victim of this developer’s known issue: DNA-64403 Crash on creating pop up windows. See above. Sorry for that.

      • iamtelephone

Will this be a quick fix (within a week) or will we be waiting a month? I might hold off as if an advert gets through it could cause a crash.

        • Przemek Kudła

This was fixed already. Please wait for the next release.

          • Piotr Niemidomski

Do you know when the new release will be available?

          • Przemek Kudła

Usually it happens within one week.

          • x a

But due to the disruptive nature of the bug (and – to an extend – forced auto updates on some systems), I assume, you’ll release a build fixing this regression much sooner, right? ,)

        • LeNgr

Keep in mind you are using the developer version which is at most a beta

  • Юлия

    I still have this issue:

Opera Dev installer extracts the files with wrong permissions, I think. Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/lhTS4Iy.png
Not sure what that padlock near the file icon means, but Opera stable does not behave like this.

To reproduce, simply do a portable installation in “C:/Users/your_username/Desktop/” folder.

Windows 7 x64, UAC disabled (if its is of any help)

Note that updating my current installation on C:UsersusernamePortableOperaDeveloper64 works fine.

  • When trying to watch Netflix from Opera on Linux I’m redirected to the help page every time:
This happens not only in latest build but for a long time. How it can be fixed?

    • Kornelia

We’re aware of this issue. Working on it.

      • Is there any user-side workaround except using other browser?

  • matthew brown

You’re welcome, that was annoying one.

  • modemjunkie

    I am running Developer
Version: 49.0.2723.0 (PGO) on my Win7 system. As with the last developer update, once installed it was necessary to reenable all of the extensions. Since doing so, I cannot share articles to Facebook. I have several FB share extensions. Regardless of which one I use, clicking share simply closes and reopens Opera but without any open tabs or Windows. Fix please,

    • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe related to the known issue listed on the post?

      • modemjunkie

If you mean – DNA-64403 Crash on creating pop up windows. That could be it.

Thanks. Glad it’s a known issue (maybe it will keep me from sharing so much on FB. That might be a good thing. 🙂 )

    • Chawoobie

      I’m experiencing same issue.

  • modemjunkie

    Note: This version autoinstalled.

  • Leonardo Gomes

The ‘See what’s new’ link in ‘Welcome to Opera’ page that appears after the upgrade points to the previous blog post on developer builds instead of this one.

  • How about adding hangouts? Pretty please? 🙂

  • Hetai-Na

You should delete the word “search” after “Google” in the list of search engines. It’s redundant.

    • Ewa

Hi, thanks for pointing this 🙂

  • oic

why do I always get pop up
“reduced security due to local, non-public certificate ”
whenever I open up the opera dev browser

  • Tratsing

Is it possible that the hiding of VK to the sidebar have the same effect to the RAM as disabling VK from the sidebar? Disabling VK freed 0,2 MB of RAM in my case. This might have a positive effect to the battery percentage of laptop.
Also, is it possible to support digital e-signatures (https://installer.id.ee/?lang=eng)? Opera is not in the compatible browsers list as the The Republic of Estonia has stated that you are not capable to develop a support to it?
The previous/old Opera (when it belonged to the previous owners) had a support to signing of e-signatures.

  • Izer0

Hi Opera guys, Maciej. I promised my UX testing report as advanced user with more than 100-200 tabs, because you guys probably don’t understand advanced users (which like Opera from beginning) probably because you don’t have enough data from feedback, because advanced users disables “spying” functions.

    So, my ordinary week:

    1. Monday morning. Started with 21 “pinned” tabs, Google, some webdesign & developer blogs, 5 local news site.Coffee and reaing news. Because I always open link to new tab, it easier to focus to find something for reading and then read opened and loaded tabs, I have 35 new tabs opened. Reading, 20 tab closed, new 6 opened, 5 closed, 16 tabs staying for later read, client are calling. Status – 37 tabs.

    2. Windows server is unable to backup system state, Goole searching, 53 newly opened tabs. Reading, updating machine, 42 tabs closed, another 17 opened as links from this 42 closed. Status – 65 tabs. Lunch.

    3. Continue on previous problem – for the rest of the week – totally about 40 tabs opened for the rest of week. Status – 78 tabs.

    4. Disk failure, head clicking, 50 new tabs from Youtube. Current status – 128 tabs. Watching – 30 tabs closed, 20 remains, another client are calling – require payment gateway. Developer session – 20 new tabs with website & libraries. Staying opened for few days. Status – 98 tabs.

    5. Evening – reading session – there is new news, opening 50 new tabs from whole day, reading, 44 tabs closed. Status – 104 tabs. Reading design blogs – new 26 tabs opened (yes, I read a lot). 20 tabs closed from this session. I don’t see any tabs separator, some favicons disappear, hard to identify some tabs, need to open V7 tabs extension. Status – Monday – 110 tab stay opened.

    1. Coffee, reading session – 16 tabs opened, reading, 14 closed, 11 opened, 11 closed, so tab varying, more icons disappear, thanks for V7 tabs extension I am able working with tabs.

    2. Fresh mind, working with non-working Windows server backup, some SSL+SQL server problems. New 15 tabs opened, 8 closed. Nothing works. Status – 120 tabs.

    4. Developer session – some tabs opened and closed, Staying on 121 tabs.

    5. Lunch – reading session – postponing local news in evening because there is a lot of them, webdesign blogs reading, some interesting list of jQuery libraries, will read later, 4 tabs stay opened. Status – 125 tabs.

    6. … some for rest of working days. Friday staying with 224 tabs opened – mostly for Windows server backup/SSL problem subject. 29 tabs postponed news articles. Lot of tabs without favicon, tabs sepaator invisible, THANKS GOT for V7 tabs extension.

Weekend – looking for Seadoo ski, about 50 new tabs with ads opened, 42 closed, 8 staying opened to Monday. My current Seadoo ski won’t start, another 35 tabs opened, reading forums, trying to fix it. Need some parts, eBay session started. More than 180 tabs opened! Yes, eBay is wonderful 🙂 I always open new tab, it is easier to me to focus on search page, open al interesting tabs and read it later instead of clicking, waiting for load, clicking back and then 180 times again. As a web developer I know that most people using Click+Back button. They are not advanced users.

Sunday – bike, later at evening starting “youtube” session – Making of (your favourite movie). 40 newly opened tabs (yes, my 16GB RAM + SSD + process limit switch working perfectly with this number of tabs). 34 tabs closed, still “need” to watch some Making of 🙂

Result – 389 tabs opened ant the end of week, mostly Windows server backup problem topic, news articles, jQuery and php libraries and documentation pages, about 20 youtube videos (Making of and Seagate disk clicking topic), about 10 seadoo topic tabs, some SEO articles, about 30 eBay pages, about 10 Envato pages, few android development tutorials. An absolutely ordinary week. But .. I switched back to Opera 44 because I don’t see any tabs from 60+ tabs session, on O 45+ it is one grey “tab”. Thanks god for V7 tabs extension. And … 🙂 I hate Opera developers because they are not understand that there are more than Black and White.

Another UX problem I don’t mentioned – I have eyes after laser surgery, know problem is that this people have higher sensitivity for high contrast, so I can’t use black theme, absolutely no. Light theme on other side have absolutely low contrast (and small tabs separator on other side). You guys are copying design from others (like Apple iOS or Google material design), but not very well, you don’t understand some things about UI and UX and when to stop with lightening everything.

PS: I understand all of you, other users, that never seen more than 100 tabs opened, maybe not more than 20 tabs, I provide user support for more than 20 years, so I know you. This is not about you. We are not all same, so please, do not write comments about how much tabs you ever open 🙂 I respect your style of work. 🙂

Result – I am staying on O44 and waiting while Vivaldi will improve/fix their more customizable and better tabs visible browser, because you guys don’t listen to us, your advanced users that works with Opera for more than 18 years.

  • Vlad

In opera stable 47.0.2631.80 html5 video not work in linux
    installed chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra/xenial-updates,xenial-security,now 61.0.3163.79-0ubuntu0.16.04.1300 amd64

    • L33t4opera

Hi Vlad, download the opera-ffmpeg-codecs package from the Herecura’s repo, and go to Opera’s installation root (check the path in opera:about), create a new subdir lib_extra, and unpack there the libffmpeg.so file from the package. It should also work with just released Opera 48.0.2685.32 (not officially announced yet), but if you update to it, then instead of the above, you can download more appropriate, higher version opera-beta-ffmpeg-codecs from the same repo, and perform the same steps as mentioned above. When the Ubuntu’s Developers will update the package, you can rename the lib_extra directory to e.g. lib_extra-old, and check if the new Ubuntu’s version works.

      • Vlad

It ok. Where opera software add opera-ffmpeg-extra in repo?

        • L33t4opera

Hi, it seems to be problematic – the explanation by @arjanvanleeuwen:disqus from the Opera: “The main reason for these problems is legal, not technical. A license to redistribute an H264 decoder is not within Opera’s reach. Ubuntu and Google have a license for it, but to use either of their components Opera needs binary compatibility with their package, which is not something that is simple to do since ABI stability is not something ffmpeg aims for” – you can find more details here.

Doesn’t load here also on Chrome 63.

    • L33t4opera

Hi Ralf, it’s known bug in initial HTTP/2 settings frame, described here. The fix was approved for merge it to the code here. If you want to use the current OPD49 for such websites, run the Opera together with the switch --disable-http2.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Great, works now! This page and http://www.enforcer.de. I hope I don’t forget to switch it back when the bug is fixed.
