Hi all,

It’s our weekly stable update. The content of today’s release is light and in the changelog, so now it is a good opportunity to see some “behind the scenes” work at our desktop team.

Since summer has started, we invited summer interns to join our team. Starting from the right, please welcome Tina from Ukraine and Michael from South Korea! Ewa, one of our QA specialists, acted as a guide for the interns in our beautiful office! And when the summer ends, who knows, maybe they will stay with us for a little longer? 😉

Thanks for the release. Nice office there. 🙂

Would it be possible to not open the Opera web “goodbye” page after Opera is uninstalled?
It opens in MSIE, which sets itself as default browser and adds its shortcuts to quick launch and start menus in Win7.

I also want Opera installer to have some checkboxes, in order to NOT:
    – install the scheduled task – Opera autoupdate
    – pin the Opera shortut on the taskbar
    – add the Opera shortcut to the quick launch bar

I only want to add a desktop shortcut, if it is not already present, thats all.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Do you un-install Opera that often?

If Opera were the default browser and you un-install it, Windows will probably set IE as the default one no matter if a page is opened there or not.
Also, IE should not add those shortcuts.

I agree that there should be some options regarding shortcuts during installation.

      • redfox

Yes, I always uninstall Opera before installing a new version. I know I could keep the autoupdate enabled, but the old version always remains installed in the Opera directory. It will get deleted after some time automatically, but a disk fragmentation occurs…

The MSIE shortcuts get (re)created only after a web page is open.
There is a Windows registry hack to disallow IE creating new shortcuts – I did not test it yet, but it looks promising:
        HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTApplicationsexplorer.exe
add new String entry NoStartPage, leave it empty.

In the version of Opera 46.0.2597.39 (there are no such problems until only version 44 inclusive), the problem when opening the browser for a fraction of seconds is displayed by the theme of Windows (who has a light then just a transparent screen for a fraction of a second), lags on flash games and YouTube, when scrolling there is no smoothness. WIN 7 x64)

  • Penny Mayes

Google maps extremely slow to load as reported on 46.0.2597.32

    • KarenArzumanyan

I confirm. And Google Street View is also very slow.

    • Ed Jay

      Turn on hardware acceleration.

      • Penny Mayes

        Already enabled.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Check if opera://gpu/ says that you are using hardware acceleration.

          • Penny Mayes

Mostly that says “hardware acceleration unavailable” so I guess that’s it for me and Opera 🙁
Bring back v12 says I, the spell check was brilliant!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Try enabling opera://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist and se if it helps. Don’t forget to read the warning at the top of that page.

          • Penny Mayes

Yes, I have done that thanks – suggested earlier – now works 🙂

        • L33t4opera

Hi, try to force it by enabling the opera:flags#ignore-gpu-blacklist, restart the browser, and see if this helps in your case.

          • Penny Mayes

            That worked – many thanks!

  • Altmann78

When i right click on the sidebar extensions, the option menu doesn`t show up like in previous versions.

    • Kornelia

I can see the same problem on selected extensions. Will report that, thanks.

  • What about this https://imgur.com/x6JGp5l
    It’s very annoying.

    • Ewa

      Hi, this is already reported.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

I want to ask: will you fix desktop notifications from YouTube? YouTube allows to enable them in Account settings (It recognizes Opera as Chrome), but they doesn’t appear.

  • redfox

After clicking a folder in the Bookmarks Bar, the drop down list overlaps the bookmarks (in a half of height). Please, move its beginning below the Bookmarks Bar.

  • Xao Fan-Tzilin

The last few versions of the Opera do not work function “On start Opera, refresh only the active tab”. Because of this, it takes a very long time to load the browser (about 1.5-2 minutes). I have about 20 tabs attached. Is it only for me or is it the new policy of the developers of the Opera?

    • Penny Mayes

Check settings – works as expected for me.

  • Ed Jay

If I have a page loaded and click on the address field as to copy the url, my speeddial page pops up half screen with a working scroll bar..

  • Andrey

    > DNA-61976 [Win] Opera crashes when bookmark is deleted using keyboard
Where? Now opera crashes when delete bookmark from keyboard or mouse….

    • Kornelia

Seems there’re still some issues with bookmarks. Sorry for that. We will take care of this.

  • Walkie Talkie

It’s nice to meet our ukrainian girl in Opera’s team! Good luck! Желаю удачи!

  • K. K. VinayKumar

Opera version 46 is just messed up in HiDPI screen in both Windows 7 and Windows 10 both 64bit. I wonder whether you people do any kind of testing. Opera stable feels like Opera beta. Opera 45 was good.

    • Sebastian

      Could you give specific examples?

      • K. K. VinayKumar

Extension icons and loading icon are blurry and pixelated. Fonts are not smooth it feels like I’m using old Windows. PDF window/frame is out of alignment i.e doesn’t fill the whole window. Whenever I open an html file or click on an link Opera opens a new window instead of opening in already open window.

        • Sebastian

          What is your DPI setting?

          • K. K. VinayKumar

Default Windows DPI scaling setting I.e 125% zoom screen resolution is 1920×1080 on a 15 inch screen. Both Windows I.e 7 & 10 have same DPI scaling.

          • Sebastian

            @kkvinaykumar:disqus , thanks!
            HiDPI related bugs were reported.

But I’m not able to reproduce: “words in speed dial and bookmarks overlap each other, speed dial wallpaper is blurry.”

            Could you attach some screenshots?

          • K. K. VinayKumar

            Here are the screenshots:
            https://snag.gy/u6Yj47.jpg
            https://snag.gy/jD6SNH.jpg

In the first screenshot you can see that speed dial wallpaper is not high definition there is some blurriness to it(in Opera 45 that same wallpaper was in high definition). In the both the screenshots you can find names of the website overlap each other and you can also find extension icons are pixelated.

  • Julian Lugod

I get crashes when I go new tab and Enter a website. :/

Sometime, i still got problem – Opera lost internet connection – like this : https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1872665/opera-wont-load-any-sites-until-i-open-another-browser-taskbar-in-front-of-full-screen-mode/p1
This is opera 46.0.2579.39 on windows 10 pro x64:
    http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag128/NdhAlex/IT%20Problems/OperaLostConnection_zpsuqpztgge.jpg

I don’t use VPN or Opera Turbo; Firefox still connects Internet normally – Opera lost connection.

    • Jeff

I’m seeing this as well on my home machine. Also Windows 10, 64-bit.

      • alex

how did you solve problem?-accepted its? I think i’m going to say goodbye with opera if it hasn’t got Free VPN.

        • Jeff

I haven’t solved it. I’ve been looking long and hard at Firefox and Vivaldi and even considering Chrome as possible alternatives. I do like Opera, but this issue makes using it on my home machine more difficult.

The main things keeping me with Opera are a long history with the browser and the fact that it renders fonts better than it used to and in some cases, better than Firefox.

          • alex

I think vivaldi is sluggish browser. It’s so compicated to made customizing for me. And,This is important: I saw Vivaldi’s performance is not good as google chrome.
My Main Browser’s firefox. In my devices-all running windows 10,firefox is the best on rendering fonts. It’s my opinion, 🙂

          • Jeff

I’ve been keeping up with Vivaldi development. It’s gotten more responsive and faster. I do think it tends towards improvements that aren’t what I particularly want or need, but I”m interested in sync and the built-in email client they’re working on. But for now, I’m just happy for reader mode. I do wish Opera would put one in.

I’m leaning towards Firefox. It’s available on most computers where I work and the Android version has gotten a lot more responsive. I’ll still use Opera as my backup browser.

          • alex

I really like the reader mode feature on browser (Firefox, EDGE,Safafi – EDGE’s not good as Firefox and Safari). On Vivaldi, it’s so good. But,as secondary browser, i want it can stability. I hope Opera can do it – but at that time,i have a little disappointed. Thank you for sharing your opinion, 🙂

          • Jeff

My pleasure. I enjoy talking out my thoughts on things. I find it helpful.

        • Jeff

I don’t know if you’re still having the same issue, but I fixed it by trying the first step on this page – https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/solved-err-network-changed-error-chrome-windows-10/. So far, so good.

  • Eric Alvaro

Tina’s outfit is so adorable 🙂

  • Константин

Opera does not fold down in macOS High Sierra (

    • Kornelia

What do you mean by ‘fold down’? Minimise?

      • Константин

        Yes

        • Kornelia

Nice catch, it’s not working until you maximised Opera. Thanks – reported!

          • Константин

            You’re welcome 🙂

  • pavan kumar

Can you please include torrent downloader over opera VPN connection?

  • Trxplz0

How about remove the black borders from video pop-out? Why change something that was good? I have to move the mouse over and over again until i find the resize position… Which is f*** sux!

  • ktxgio

Please, can i have information about update 46.0.2597.26314 for windows?

    • Kornelia

We were testing new autoupdate servers yesterday. We deployed on them build with changed version (46.0.2597.26314) for easier tracking. It is same build as 46.0.2597.32.

      • ktxgio

        thanks

  • Hans Hansen

    missing German translation:

    • Kornelia

      Thanks Hans, reported.

      • Gordon Freeman

Also missing the German translation for “Trash” in Bookmarks.

  • Andrej

Opera is the only browser that does not support Fsecure browser security extension. It is also the only browser without Slovenian translation. Why?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Opera is the only browser not supported by Fsecure.

  • Евгений М.

Opera has problem with some sites (e.g. 59.ru) – mouse cursor always show “loading”, increased CPU loading, slow interface etc.
I think it’s related to some java scripts on sites…

    P.S. Started from 46.0.2597.32

    • Xao Fan-Tzilin

Good loading for me in that site (59.ru) – very fast and without cursor round.

  • redfox

Site forums.opera.com auto-reloads itself after about every 3 seconds, so it is impossible to post a message or sroll down…

    • Kornelia

Yep, it happens sometimes. Sorry for that. Usually you can fix it by removing the cookies and re-login.

      • Harry

With all due respect, shouldn’t Opera be fixing this?

  • C A

Hi. Did you solve the Lazy session loading issue ?
Could you please add a ‘don’t load inactive tabs at start up’ option ?

    • Xao Fan-Tzilin

      I confirm this problem!
I already wrote about this below 2 days ago.

      • C A

Thank you bro, i hope Opera programmers pay attention for this. That was very necessary option for the users who are browse with multiple tabs.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s doing what it is supposed to do.

      • Xao Fan-Tzilin

        Really?

        • Leonardo Gomes

It seems so. At least here the loading of background tabs are being delayed.

          • Xao Fan-Tzilin

I talking not about delayes between refreshing of tabs, but about refreshing only one tab that is active, and noting more, no other refreshings.. Only 1 active tab refresh! Other tabs are later, when they become active.

          • Leonardo Gomes

It happened if you disabled ‘extended lazy loading…’ in opera://flags. Now that experiment has ended and they’ve enabled ‘extended lazy loading’ as it seems.

So things are working as should. if you like it or not is another discussion.

          • Nekomajin43

No, it should work as it did before, and the new algorithm should be another switch in the Settings. This is typical Opera solution to destroy something that worked, and force something else despite of the user feedback.

          • Василий

This function doesn’t work as it should actually. The right option was to stop the inactive tabs from loading at all (just as it was before). Otherwise, the users are going to suffer the lack of RAM.
Just found a forum thread with your replies. Stop being an egocentric jerk, Leo. If you don’t have any problems with your 8Gb of RAM that doesn’t mean any other users should upgrade their system or quit using Opera.

  • Vam-J

I could support with the sidebar of Whatsapp, as this does not show me the emoji section.
Thank you very much in advance.

My Win 10 32bit PC updated to 46.0.2597.39 last night. Ever since then Opera crashes and restarts every time I delete bookmarks from nested folders using mouse or keyboard.

    • Xao Fan-Tzilin

This happens from a certain size of the folder with links. When the folder size is smaller, the link is normally deleted. Therefore, I first move a link from a large folder to a smaller folder, and from there delete it.
So it was in both last versions – .32 and .39

      • David Andrew

Not so, this has only started happening since last night’s 46.0.2597.39 update. I have now found as you say that a link can be deleted if it is moved to another folder, but I have never had to do that prior to this update. Therefore, something has been changed and needs correcting. I see there is an earlier post of 4 days ago where someone else has also found this problem and there is a reply from Kornelia that it will be looked at.

  • Anni Amni

since a few days my opera is really slow, like the sites load really slow. sometimes it even needs more time before the site even starts to load. 🙁

  • Łukasz Janik

Improved vpn, it blocks what it does not need

  • Hector MA

Explain this, it won’t go anywhere.
Not the first time I see this box, it’s been around for a long time.

BTW, you can’t select tex or click on links inside that box, I don’t know how to reproduce it.
When you select text outside the box and continue the selection inside it, all text in the page gets selected, when you continue the selection to the line below but outside of the box again, just the paragraph is selected, including the text inside the box.

You can’t start the selection from inside the box, the cursor doesn’t change to that mode.

  • Do I need to add w3 or rocket app to Opera to make it load faster?

  • Kang Tri

Suddenly I am getting crash for this version… Instead Version 45 working fine… I can’t change anything, new tab, new windows, manage extension is disabled.

  • redfox

I defined Google Maps as one of my custom search engines.
When I highlight a text in an UTF-8 webpage and select “Find with… Google Maps” from the context menu, all the characters with diacritics like ěščřžýáíé (example) seems to be automatically transcoded into another charset (ISO-8859-2?), which results in omitting these characters – they are replaced by white spaces, so Google Maps does not find anything.
If I look into Google Maps’ URL field, there is “%EC%B9%E8%F8%BE%FD%E1%ED%E9” instead of “ěščřžýáíé”.
If I enter the search string manually there, everything is OK.
Whay does Opera parse the search string converted, when using the custom search?

  • David Andrew

Deleting links from nested folders is still causing Opera to crash in 46.0.2597.46
