We do not slow down despite the very high vacation season.

Speed Dial suggestions

Today we release an update for the speed dial suggestions, which contains tons of bug fixes. There are too many of them to mention, so you can read through the changelog to see most of them.

Our goal is not only to provide meaningful and useful suggestions, but also make them look good on your speed dial. This effort is continuous work, and we are not going to stop it even after the release. First we start with the most popular services, then we are going to add nice looking tiles for more and more services.

For more bugfixes details please take a look at the changelog.

  • Hm, update => all my extensions are gone, my Speed Dieal is exchanged for an older one, Speed Dial theme is enabled though I never enabled it. Oh, Bookmarks mostly gone, too.

    • Kornelia

We will investigate this issue. Meanwhile, could you tell me what’s your operating system? Was synchronisation on/off? And what is your installation type (if Windows): all users, usb mode, simple user?

      • Windows 10, on, all users

Like Rayjin I also found many settings changed from my choice to, probably, defaults, i.e. ad blocking was off though I had it on since it was introduced.

      • Noticed only this morning that my spell check dictionaries had also been gone; had to reinstall them

  • Rayjin

All my extensions are gone. My speed dial is completely empty. Advanced settings on privacy have vanished. I basically have to reinstall everything again. What the hell?

    • Kornelia

Hi, we are not able to reproduce this. Seems working fine both on Mac and Windows here. What is your operating system? Was synchronisation on/off? And the previous version of Opera beta was 40.0.2308.3? And what is your installation type (if Windows): all users, usb mode, simple user?

Guys, Dell has stopped the production of Android tablets and switches to Windows. It seems that the tablet market turns to Windows for 2 to 1 function (tablet+laptop)! Opera does not work properly in Windows tablets – touch screen mode is not functioning well, tiles are not moving, text cut & paste is difficult and generally the browser feels awkward and out of place. It seems that the only viable solution is (and I hate to say this) Edge (+UC browser)! Please, do something! As it is now, I use Opera on my tablet only in laptop mode (with the keyboard attached) and switch to Edge when in tablet mode.

    • nme

I absolutely agree, we need a proper Opera (UWP) browser… Something worth of Opera’s name. Current one is really slow in general, jerky scrolling, unstable…

    • jedy123

If you think the Windows tablet version is bad, the iOS one is also bad. Very few updates and little in the way of any fixes/improvements.

      • tarkus

Maybe so, but that’s not a good argument not to take proper action. In fact, it’s an additional motivation. What I mean is that O for windows is NOT designed for tablet use (as O android which works flawlessly)! It’s imperative for the O devs to work things out!

        • jedy123

I was merely sympathising with you with my less than satisfactory experience on iOS. Not sure why you are viewing my comment as a negative. I’d love Opera to bring improvements to all their mobile browsers and not just Android which seems to be the only decent mobile O browser at the moment.

Suggestions, hmmm… After seeing the Suggestions area with a few worthless thumbnails for the first time last night, I posted on the previous beta that I’m not looking for or desiring Opera’s suggestions (better suggestions: scalable printing and tab bar on the bottom). I deleted them all and after this new beta installed, they still aren’t there. Hope it stays that way. If you insist, please provide an option to turn off Suggestions.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      There is such option already.

    • Kornelia

‘Customize start page’ -> ‘Hide suggestions’ should do the job.

  • I installed Opera 40 beta on a very old PC the other day (Pentium 4 1.7 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Windows 7 32-bit), and so far it runs fine, not expecting wonders in terms of video/TV playback of course. I still had to install Adobe Flash and MS Silverlight for some TV portals like Magine TV and Zattoo, also streaming sites like Spotify and Deezer needed the Flash plugin.

I still prefer the thumbnail site previews instead of the Windows 8 tiles used in the quick dial, so I had to edit my bookmarks for each one of them which is a bit uncomfortable in my opinion. And it seems that I cannot choose the size of the thumbnails anymore, or is this a hidden setting somewhere now? Now all of them look cutoff on the upper and lower part.

    • Nekomajin43

Use your mouse wheel over the thumbnail in the bookmark popup to zoom in and out.

      • I tried to do that by clicking on the heart icon on the bookmarked page, but zooming the picture with the mouse did not work. Same when I tried it in the bookmarks overview, so maybe this does not work on all computers? Or is this a mouse gesture which I have disabled? My 19″ monitor has the old 4:3 format at 1280x1024p, by the way, maybe that is the problem, or the old graphics card.

        • xirit64

It works the first time you add it, not at a later time (after you ‘ve saved it). So while you are on your already bookmarked page, click the (red) heart icon again, then the trash bin icon to remove it, then click again the heart, choose your desired thumbnail to begin with and scroll immediately. Pressing and holding the middle mouse additionaly pans the image.

          • Aha, that makes sense, will try it out today. … Works fine, thank you! Maybe this option should be made more obvious somehow in the popup.

          • xirit64

            Not maybe, definitely! 🙂

          • Nekomajin43

A “move” or “all-zoom” cursor would be nice at first.

    • Marko Koivuniemi

1 GB more (or even 3GB) could make wonders to that machine. It could be possible that I have spare ones I could send for free to fellow Opera user. 🙂

      • Very nice offer, thank you. 🙂 It’s an Asus P4B533-E mainboard which supports 2 GB DDR1 RAM (PC2100/PC1600) maximum in three slots, and I have 2×512 MB now. If you still have spare ones, I will send you my email and postal address on Disqus. I think they have to be single-sided if all three slots are used.

        • Marko Koivuniemi

Yes. I think I have DDR1-modules available. I’m not sure are they single-sided but I will check. And if there are double-sided 2x1GB will do. I should have those.

          • It looks like Disqus does not have an option for PMs, furthermore I already tried to simply post my address here, and it was blocked as spam, d’oh! I added my Facebook profile to my Disqus profile, so maybe we can PM contact over there. My usual email address is hans-juergen.bardenhagen@arcor.de

          • Hi Marko, your modules arrived yesterday, and I have just installed them – big difference indeed, and thank you very much again! 🙂

Is Opera beta supposed to be updated automatically, too? I just checked the version page, and it only says that there is a new version available, but no button to download it. Maybe I only have to wait a little bit longer… OK one hour later my Opera menu turned red signalling the update would be ready to install.

  • Leo Lozes

Please, stop adding AliExpress to the Speed Dial suggestions. I’ve tried to get rid of it countless times, it still comes back. It gives me more reasons NOT to go to that website than if I could delete it for good.

    • jedy123

The main reason I like Opera’s Speed Dial is that it allows us to add what we want to it and neatly organise with a great folder structure – none of this ‘Top Sites’ as seen on other browsers. Suggestions isn’t something I’d use as it so far hasn’t suggested anything of any use to me.

  • jedy123

A new update but I’m still unable to sign in and synchronise my account.
All I get is the message ‘An error occurred. Please try again’. My username and password are correct as it works on Opera stable. OSX 10.9.5.

When will this problem get fixed?

  • Joe

A dark theme would be nice.

    • Mailer Mainer

yeah, i think too that a dark theme will be nice or maybe a dashboard to custom how we want the design. http://365hacks.com

  • xiang

Shame Sync is still not working.
On W10 and Sync has not been working since first beta of Opera 40.

    • jedy123

Like my post says below, I’m also having sync problems on Mac. Last I heard (blog for previous beta update) it is a known bug and there is an internal fix. Not sure when this fix will make its way to beta though.

      • xiang

Yeah, I saw a reply in the previous beta release that it was internally fixed. Had expected it would have been pulled into this release.

  • Nellaiseemai

Works excellent on Win 7, 64 and Mac 10.10.5. Very responsive. Sync works just fine. One suggestion. Can you please keep the close button on each tab on the right hand side for Mac. Thanks

  • Rinne Tensei

In near future are all win32 apps going UWP since MS has been promoting it viciously? what about opera ?

    • redfox

It’s a long way. Since UWP applications do not run in older Windows versions (below 10), most developers are not willing to migrate to this new platform yet.

    Why still no extension sync?

Open image in new tab is the first item in the context menu in Firefox, Chrome and Vivaldi (but not in Opera)

    P. S. This creates a great inconvenience =( Please fix it!

    • Leonardo Gomes

      And your point is….?

    • Leonardo Gomes

I prefer the current way, so please do not change it.

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera beta 40.0.2308.15 😉

  • coffeefish

I do not like the speed dial suggestions; how can I disable them?
