Hi All,

Today’s developer release is sort of special. This time it is based on our prospective beta branch, and, even though technically developer, should be of at least beta quality. So, we hope it meets the expectations!

The highlights for this release include:

  • DNA-45329 Enable cancel download button on beta
This one introduces the “cancel download” button on any download in progress which is visible in the downloads dropdown.download-dropdown
  • DNA-45037 [Engine] Never save password does not work
After this fix, the “Never save password for this site” sliding toolbar option works as expected.
  • DNA-7132 No handshake strength information in badge’s connection details
This is a minor but important fix – now, when you click “Details” on the secure site badge, you will see the info about the handshake key strength added at the end of the string.
  • DNA-45138 Some context menu options no longer available.
With this fix, image context menu items have been restored.

Known issues

We are aware of other context menu issues. They are going to be fixed quite soon.

The Chromium version has been updated to 47.0.2526.35.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Aneta, thanks for the article, and nice update 😉

    • Tomasz Procków

      Updated. Thanks for hint 🙂

      • Aneta Reluga

  • Vux777

I think there is a bug with z indexes
works fine on stable and beta

    • Vux777

can anyone from devs confirm that z-indexes are messed in this build?

      • Aneta Reluga

I’ll try to catch one of them, please have a little patience 🙂 And of course thanks for the report.

  • Vux777

are those icons fetched from Opera servers or…?

    • BK

Opera servers, yes, same as Coast solution.

      • Vux777

        hammer time 😛

    • quark

      What’s that exactly?

      • Vux777

when you click on address bar, you will see recommended tiles (drop down panel)…
images for those tiles are pulled from Opera servers
…btw. algorithm for choosing which tiles will be presented still sucks
if users could customize it, it would be better

  • Vux777

    finally mute all tabs 🙂

    • L33t4opera

I also appreciate this feature, it’s really handy 😉

    • x a

Yep, great feature. And it’s a useful decision to implement its user interface as an easy to hit button in the browser action area.

But that makes another problem more and more severe: You need to find a solution to allow users to use their numerous browser action buttons provided by add-ons. The x%-window-width-maximum strategy, dropping any surplus button, cannot seriously persist.

      • Vux777

there is more on that subject

soon, Chrome (probably all chromiums too) will force browser action buttons for every installed extension
also, page action buttons (from address bar) will be moved to toolbar as browser action buttons
every installed extension will have toolbar button, no matter if it have actual functionality or not
        because of security reasons
I think they pushed too far this time with this
There is already restrictions for installing extension in the first place
plus, that annoying warning msg if extension is installed locally
        …and now this
I hope Opera will somehow avoid this change

        • Nekomajin43

I hope Opera will not follow this stupid idea. If they do, then they have to revise their non-cluttered GUI belief.

      • Nekomajin43

The easiest solution would be to allow toolbar customisation like in Firefox.

  • Victor

I don’t get it. Have you drop the add search engine from the context menu??? considering that this setting is not synch, this is crazy

    • Aneta Reluga

This is one of the known issues regarding various context menu options. Should be fixed with the next update.

  • Angry Penguin

Please, add RPM pack for Linux build even as experimental but add it.

  • Angry Penguin

Any hope for enable hardware decode on Linux? For now is enable only in Windows and Mac. On Linux side is force disabled (two steam force) one with disabled ignore-gpu-blacklist and two with -disable-accelerated-video-decode.

You should making this second enable in Linux. Because one is good if we have any isses with drivers. So one like now, two enabled.

Chromium develipers, disabled this accelerared-video-decode some time ago, but as you can see at chromium bug tracker develpers from Intel says it should be enabled.

Hi, I try to enable it in Linux by defalut: https://codereview.chromium.org/176883018/
In my opinion, there is not big reason to not enable it in Linux, because zmo@ already made GPU blacklist control accelerated video decode.”

    Topic: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=137247#c22

Also we have ppa for Ubuntu with Chromium DEV with enabled HW Decode by default and I try and works fine even on my Catalyst /fglrx driver and opensource radeon.

So can you please, look at this?

    • Łukasz Jagielski

      Hi, we’re looking at this.

    • Arjan van Leeuwen

Can you file a bug for this (at https://bugs.opera.com/wizarddesktop/ ) and report back with the bug number? Make sure to leave your email address so we can contact you.

      • Angry Penguin

        Ok, done.

  • Cary Fries

Thanks so much for mute!!!! Make the context search available in text fields and sort them, & I’ll die happy.

    • VfBFan

      Mentioned before,

      1. The last used search engine (context menu) isn’t saved for each tab, it’s always the default search engine. (unlike Opera 12).
      2. Context menu -> Ctrl key doesn’t open the search in a new background tab.
      3. Favicons are missing in the search context menu.
      4. Search engines in the context menu can’t be sorted.
      5. Search in address bar -> Keyboard shortcuts don’t work as expected (like hyperlinks, see below).

Search shortcut + search word + Enter = open in active tab
Search shortcut + search word + Ctrl + Shift + Enter = open in new tab
Search shortcut + search word + Ctrl + Enter = open in new background tab
Search shortcut + search word + Shift + Enter = open in new window

  • x a

So, is it supposed to stay the way it is in recent developer versions (since introduction of bookmarks’ backend for speeddial), ie that the *first* four items from a speed dial folder will be presented on the 2×2 folder tile – other than it used to be, when the *latest* 4 items were presented there?

Just asking, if it’s worth the effort to re-arrange things…

ETA: Just found this answer, thanks – so it’s come to stay.

  • Nekomajin43

The mute tab feature is great!

Will you make bigger visual modifications on the speed dial, or you just change the backend?

  • Kev87

Speaking about the dowload manager. In the dutch version of Opera there is a translation error. When the download time is displayed in minutes, it says for example ‘5 minuten resterend’. When it is displayed in hours, it says ‘1 uur geleden’ and it should also be ‘1 uur resterend’.

    • Marcin Mitek

Thanks, I’ll pass that to translations team!

  • escruting

What is the tiles function next to other similar functions like bookmarks bar and speed dial? You said you didnt want to over-complicate the UI.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess it’s something like Chrome’s or old Firefox’s Top Sites.

  • Dmitry Kirin

Image context menu now has Save as at the top. Thanks! It’s more convenient, even though it’s going to take a few days to get used to it.

    • Taneli

It still doesn’t have “Image Properties”, though, which wouldn’t hurt.

      • Nekomajin43

        • Aneta Reluga

Wouldn’t. But then again, this is quite a vague suggestion, so, according to your opinion @Taneli:disqus and @Nekomajin43:disqus what are the essential image properties which should be there? Size, type, compression format, DPI? EXIF info if available? Which do you consider useful as the everyday browser users? Thanks in advance 🙂

          • Dmitry Kirin

Image dimensions and file size, EXIF info optional. Never needed DPI.
When I was searching for a good EXIF viewer extension, in order to test them, I tried images I was seeing on screen. Many of them were either not clickable, i.e. shown as div/td background:url(), or optimised for web, i.e. EXIF info cut off. Galleries like in Facebook and OneDrive show optimised images or even capture the right click, so they won’t show EXIF even when it’s there somewhere behind all that. So in essense, I don’t expect the browser to become a powerful helper with image info.

          • Nekomajin43

File size, path, dimensions (real and shown on screen), file type. These are a must. And I don’t know how hard it is to read the EXIF data, but that would be a nice addition.

          • Aneta Reluga

            Thanks for both the responses!

      • Dmitry Kirin

I just wanted to recommend an EXIF viewer extension for that, but the questions usually asked in such cases started popping up in my head. I opened the task manager to check whether it’s that bad and saw the extension memory uses 220MB, yeah, that’s bad… o_O
Still I’m for an extension to do that task. Just not so memory-eager one.

  • Taneli

” Desktop Team Blog requires you to verify your email address
before posting.” and shortly after that, my email account got wiped off from gmail, neat. I did happen to use that account for several things, which is bloody inconvenient.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

As disqus says: “Many sites using Disqus require a verified email for commenting to prevent spam. Verifying lets you join discussions quickly and easily.”

  • Max Lynch

When I launch Opera I get an error saying : ‘ Can’t open User profile directory, because you lack sufficient privileges.’

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi Max, what operating system are you using?

  • shane

    small feature request;
Please allowing locking the speed dial to prevent accidental deletes. It is currently very easy to accidentally delete a speed dial entry and there is no undo support.

    1. Lock the speed dial
    2. Prompt before deleting
    3. Support undo

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

      Thanks for your feedback.

    • Marcin Mitek

There is a thrash bin in Bookmarks where you can undo your deletion. (at least this is covered)

      • Nekomajin43

It was better when the delete button was at the bottom, on the label, not on the tile itself.

  • iamtelephone

On Linux, h264 (mp4) videos are crashing (page crash). I’m using the ‘lib_extra’ workaround, which still works with the previous developer version.

    • Łukasz Jagielski

Hi, so the regression for you happens between 34.0.2026.0 and 34.0.2026.2?

      • iamtelephone

Yes. On 34.0.2036.2, mp4 videos are causing page crashes.

E.g. The following link crashes on the newest release (34.0.2036.2), but plays fine on the prior release (34.0.2026.0): http://www.html5videoplayer.net/videos/toystory.mp4

        • Łukasz Jagielski

Chromium bumped ffmpeg libs versions, probably some api changed. You might want to switch to using chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra pacakge rather than lib_extra workaround, it enabled version checking. Unfortunately newer version is needed than in Ubuntu packages, there’s currently a ppa for it https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta

  • Leonid Frolov

Developers, take a look to speed dial’s sync. In ‘other speed dials’ folder i have at least 5 speed dial doppels of my every devices. It makes all sync function useless for me. And for God sake, please do something about speed dial’s design!

    • Stanislav Stratil

Whats so bad about speed dial design? I actually like how simple it looks. Only thing I dont like about it, is almost none hover effect, when you are pointing mouse cursor on dials. It should be more visible by my opinion.
Oh, and one more thing… no option to get rid of “Add website”.

      • Leonid Frolov

It would be great to have an option to change speed dial’s look as a theme. I really don’t like black-on-white design.

        • Laga Mahesa

Opera’s themes change one thing: the speed dial wallpaper. :/

      • Nekomajin43

First of all: Everything is square, except the search field. And why do we need that search field at all? There is bookmark search in the address bar. They removed the search field from the toolbar because of the combined search and address bar, but there is a search field on the speed dial. Why?

        Second: https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1867183/theme-improvements#Item_1

        Third: Navbar position.

        • SuperTommy

Edit: Sorry, you meant *that* search field. I read too fast.

  • Matej Szendi

Enable Close tab from context menu on pinned tab, it’s annoying to unpin tab and after that close it.

  • Kev87

When you enable the flag, you can mute all tabs, fantastic! Now, will there be in the future the option to reload all the tabs (for example in the list when right clicking on a tab)?

  • Victor

Opera is hanging consistently in my pc with this url (https://www.meistertask.com/app#dashboard). Any idea?

  • NanoPi

    I had trouble playing mp4 files (h264, aac) in Opera-dev on Windows 10 (10240)

    videos on twitter wouldn’t play

seems to be related to choice of gpu for opera.exe in Nvidia Control Panel, and how opera.exe –process-type=gpu-process hangs and restarts shortly after startup. as long as this doesn’t happen, MP4 files play but the image is too bright.

nvidia control panel lets me choose between “Integrated graphics” and “High-performance NVIDIA processor” for exe files, by file name.

http://i.imgur.com/V6E8DuG.png left = integrated graphics, right = nvidia processor

    http://i.imgur.com/FhqMoiS.png opera://media-internals

cpu: intel core i5-2410m (sandybridge, optimus, integrated graphics)
    gpu: nvidia gtx 540m

using opera on integrated graphics will fix both things, but something will be slow

  • Marc

Don’t know if this is known, but when adding a bookmark it’s not possible to zoom and drag the speed dial image.

  • Sławomir Szewczyk

When will it be available synchronization extensions and speed dial?

    • bwat47

Speed dials are already synced, speed dials from synced devices can be found under the ‘other speed dials’ folder in the bookmarks manager

      • PaulW

While that’s true I think the speed dials should also be synced into the speed dial area..

        • bwat47

It would be neat if there was a dropdown or something on the speed dial page that let you toggle which device’s speed dial to display (or display the local dial)

      • That is not synchronisation: that is the uploading and downloading of individual speed dial entries. My laptop has a speed dial containing more than 50 web pages, neatly sorted into folders. I just re-installed the OS of my desktop, do I really have to add these 50 web pages again?

        • Vux777

when you open other speed dials, you cant see it?
if you do, just drag and drop (or cut/paste) into your current speed dial

  • Vux777

is there a reason why Opera splits history by UTC and local time?
or is it a bug?…or some sort of correction?

I mean, for the local time difference, history items will be under previous day
If I’m in time zone +1, all those pages that were visited between 00:00 and 01:00 will be split and wrongly listed under yesterday, but somehow still under today menu item

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Afaik, it’s a bug.

      • Vux777

        you are -2, right?
so you get sites counted as today, and in fact they are from yesterday 22:00 to 00:00?
        other way around…

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Yep, because of daylight saving.

And yes, i can see days starting at around 22:00 in history.

    • xirit64

I found that also weird in the past, maybe it’s not a bug but intended, related to the synchronization. Looks to me like they relate everything to a universal clock to avoid any complications from time zone differences. It will be interesting to see what it is finally.

      • Vux777

well, the math behind it is good
they split history by today, yesterday and other correctly
it’s just weird that they don’t render it under same list
but you might be right about sync
maybe there is some catch with pushed history trough sync that could mess data
…or it’s because they switching it to bundled extension and it’s not finished yet

  • x a

You should update the Open Graph og:image on this site to show the revamped Opera icon like you did on the main site.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Good catch, thanks!

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Still the Java problem. I hope there will soon be a solution.

  • Vux777

there are hiccups in the history list
    time doesn’t match

strangely, API for the same item gives correct milliseconds

  • A. R.

When will we get tab stacking?

    • Hylian Ticipated

I read that as “back stabbing”, which we’ve already gotten.

      • Bacon Informer

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera developer 34.0.2044.0 😉
The change log, and the announcement.

  • Marcelo Meireles

I love Opera, but what did you do with “Spell checker options…”???????
When I was expecting a more intelligent way to multi-language spell check, you turn it much more difficult to change the current dictionary.
    I’m rolling back to 33!

    • Leonardo Gomes

Please read the post, in special the Known Issues part.

      • Marcelo Meireles

        I have. Thanks anyway.

        • Leonardo Gomes

The “known issues” part is the answer of your question. You’ve got it, right?

  • Marcelo Meireles

Aneta, I’ve notice the “Spell checker options” is temporarily gone, as mentioned in some posts (DNA-45138 maybe), because I use it all the time changing along the dictionaries I daily use, just when I was expecting a more automatic way to multi-language spell check.

Is that idea of improvement something I could be seeing in Opera in a near future?

  • qternet

Ctrl+Tabbing is terrible in new versions. Can you at least put a switch into options? I need to switch tabs quickly not fish for them in some small menu.
