Hi everyone,

Today we are happy to present you our brand new Opera 33 beta. This release contains several improvements:

Vibrancy in OS X

The Opera window looks nicer with its partially transparent frame (which is enabled by the flag #vibrancy-in-window-frame):

Here is a list of some other flags which were enabled:

  • #proprietary-codecs-support-for-web-audio-api – with this flag we could easily load mp3 /mp4 codecs to javascript web audio.
  • #linux-libnotify-toasts – these notifications are used to inform the user about an event or display some form of information without getting in the user’s way.

From now on, we are going to focus on stabilization and bug fixing.

For full list of flags, features and bug fixes, please check the changelog.

Thanks, Kornelia, for this first Opera 33 Beta build release !
Been waiting for this since Opera 32 Stable and now testing.

    • SuperTommy

      Short and sweet today. ๐Ÿ™‚

Edit: Now my comment doesn’t make sense anymore. ๐Ÿ™

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

      Thanks @disqus_1XVlhRqEIm:disqus . We missed you ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Dark Magician

Dropped frames on YT, when changing windows size.

  • 7thGear

Is there a Chance for transparent frames in XP? Or overlapping Themes over the Tab bar, like Opera 12?

    • Aneta Reluga

Support for XP itself has been dropped by Microsoft one and a half year ago, with only a few security fixes from time to time. And from my observations, more and more app providers move away from XP and Vista, focusing on active and developing operating systems. So, frankly, as much as it would be a nice feature, I wouldn’t be optimistic about that. I’m sorry.

      • Lacedaemon

You shouldn’t have dropped Vista though, it’s technically Windows 7 without the super-bar. And it is still supported. Yet you gave to it the XP look.

        • Marko Koivuniemi

It’s not that simple – for example Adobe DC doesn’t support Vista anymore but works in 7.

      • 7thGear

Thanks Aneta. It would be a very nice feature.

    • Cryio

      Move on from XP already.

  • Lacedaemon

This happens in all streams for a long, long time:

-open a new window and drag it out of its maximized state to a window state.
-now open (without closing the other one) a new private window -> the window opens in a semi-maximized state.
-dragging it to the top to fully maximize it leads to a black window bar and to the disappearance of the 3 window icons (minimize, maximize, close).
    Windows 7, 64-bit

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, thanks. We saw your comments before and developers are taking care of it now.

  • Robert

When adding the function Auto Cleanup history?
Yet there is no possibility to remove the white line on the tiles in the express panel.

  • L33t4opera

    • Kev87

Hi, what exactly does the “opera:flags#new-tabs-model” ?

      • mikemanger

Seems to crash my browser a lot.

      • L33t4opera

Hi Kev87, it seems to be related to: “DNA-41213 Chrome browser model migration phase one: tab_strip_model adaptation.“, but as for now, it looks like an early work in progress, and causes crashes for some users, under various circumstances.

  • Lacedaemon

Observance: The blinking when creating new tabs got worse in this upgrade. Further optimization is desperately needed. W7 64-bit

Also, thanks for fixing DNA-43010?, now middle-click on bookmarks in the bookmark manager does work. That was very important.

And the 3rd important with much sugar on it . Do something about the returning ads, or have the guts to put it in the installer or in the EULA stating that this browser is “ad-based” and even provide more ads after every update/upgrade.

  • Cary Fries

Streaming mp3 on listenlive.co is broken – but is working in stable w/o adobe flash. For example, http://player.listenlive.co/29591 Windows 10×64

EDIT: *sigh* inexplicably working now for no apparent reason.

    • Kev87

      It’s also working here ๐Ÿ™‚ w10 64bit

      • Cary Fries

Good! Just one of those things I guess.

  • master94ga

duolingo.com doesn’t have audio on linux with all version of Opera, on chromium is ok.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, what is your Linux distro?

      • master94ga

Manjaro, but probably the issue is also on Arch Linux

        • L33t4opera

You can try the following steps:
(this is example for Opera beta 33 64-bit)
          1. Download the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package for Ubuntu 64-bit
          2. Extract the lib to a temporary directory, e.g. /tmp ar p chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_*.deb data.tar.xz | tar xJf - --strip 5 -C /tmp3. Run the below commands as root (or use another user with administrative privileges):cd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-beta && mkdir lib_extra && cd lib_extra && cp /tmp/libffmpeg.so libffmpeg.so.33

  • Looking forward to seeing the Windows 10 style fix flag enabled by default…

  • Kev87

A little translation bug, that is happening in all streams for some versions now. When you want to change the language of Opera and you are working in the English version, it shows that Opera needs to restart. You can click on the word ‘restart’ to restart it. (like in this picture) Now when you have the Dutch language as default for example and you choose another language, not the word ‘herstarten’ (=restart), but ‘van Opera nodig’ (from Opera) is now the button to restart it (see this one). It should also be the verb ‘herstarten’ that is highlighted as a button. This is also happening in lots of other languagues, such as French, German and lots of others that I don’t speak ๐Ÿ™‚ . Can this be fixed, because this visual ‘error’ is present since a long time in Opera!

  • Cary Fries

How hard would it be to sort the context menu search (I have about 15 in there, and they are a mess) and also make it available within text boxes? That’d be invaluable, at least to me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • ayespy

      This is Beta.

“From now on, we are going to focus on stabilization and bug fixing.”

Your comment would be appropriate to a Developer post.

      • Cary Fries

        Noted. Thank you.

  • This version crashes Opera on the “critical pages”. (MagyarOprera, Youtube, etc…), too, like Opera 34. (WinXP32) does.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, regarding the MagyarOpera, I’m aware, that this is not a solution to the problem, but only a workaround to avoid the crash in this case:
      1. Install one of the extensions, which allow you to block ads, e.g. Adguard, or uBlock,
      2. Add the following rule, that blocks the element, causing the crash:magyaropera.blog.hu###mainWrapper > .mainIn > .vis_public.post > .entry > p > videoAdguard: Options > User filter > Add new rule.
      uBlock: Options > My Filters.

  • Lacedaemon

[BUG] Happens for quite some time in all streams: Using mouse gesture “Down” in opera://themes opens the *item-link of the Speed Dial, instead of opening a new SD tab. See address bar in video: https://sendvid.com/5dyjaeoj
I can always reproduce it when I change the theme from inside the SD (right-click, change theme) *when the pointer of the mouse is above or between thumbnails, (most common example when done above the first row). It opens the corresponded link of the thumbnail that was underneath the pointer, no matter where the mouse gesture is being performed.
    Windows 7×64 & Vistax32

  • bwat47

I’m seeing a small issue with dragging tabs between windows:

    1. Tear off a tab into a new window
    2. tear off the tab from the new window, you’ll see that the thumbnail preview of the tab is all black

    • SuperTommy

Yes, it’s known. Started in O32.

  • I’m running Opera beta on a PC with Windows 8.1

Opera beta and dev cannot play videos at cbssports.com, which play fine on other web browsers.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, we do not see the problem on http://cbssports.com/ here. Any specific video you can sent us to check?

      • Here’s one:

It constantly blinks “loading..” and never stops, while it may blink 3 times and loads the video with other browsers. I have tried disabling all my extensions and that does not help.

Several videos on that page does the same thing.

Again, this affects beta and dev versions.

The videos work fine on the stable version.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have Turbo or “click to play” enabled by chance?

Here i could reproduce the issue with “click to play” enabled but not with Opera set up to run all plugins.

          • I have run all plugins and Turbo off, all CBS Sports videos ran fine

Turned on Turbo, videos won’t play.
Turned Turbo back off, everything played fine.

            Definitely a Turbo issue.

        • I completely uninstalled Opera Beta, reinstalled it fresh, added my extensions and the videos are WORKING. There must have been a bad file or setting in the local or roaming directories. I’ll know next time to reinstall when I have problems.

  • soularav

Dear opera developers it will be great if you could give a solution for flash installation for us we use opera portable and we don’t have administrator rights.
    Thank you.

  • RX-3200

33 still collapses text on select in many pages
(after the selected, text or part of text just disappears)
for example in google_translate – translated text disappears after select in 33
    (in 32 it worked fine)

  • Gloriam

Feature request: Ability to remove the [+] button in the Speed Dial, that would be great. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Lacedaemon

I don’t think that will ever happen, this has been asked since O15, 2 1/2 years ago… but maybe if it’s mentioned for the 1000th time maybe there is a 0.0001% better chance… maybe…

  • Leonid Frolov

Developers, when are you planning to continue improving speed dial? Please, bring back an option to fit cells in page or to choose cell’s scale. And design of speed dial imho is not looking good right now. Please, take a note.

  • Dark Magician

This build crashes, didn’t see that in while on beta.

    • Marko Koivuniemi

What os? I haven’t had any problems with freshly upgraded Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

      • Dark Magician

        Same OS as you.

    • Aneta Reluga

Is it a startup crash, or only on some specific page?

      • I have seen it on OS X 10.11 (one seems to be site/ browser, the other seems to be a compatibility issue with OS X 10.11)

      • Dark Magician

Usage crash, and not on specific pages.

  • Ok, I’m starting to get really upset at this point. I have random advertisement speed dials popping up on all my devices now……………….
Yesterday on my phone, today on my work desktop. Not to mention 3 of the same folders in “Other speed dials”…

EDIT: I’m talking about stable channel by the way. You guys need to see this and do something about this.

  • Vux777

that bug from developer builds is now expanded to beta

sidebar doesn’t update favicons (on line)
only visited pages have it, but if something is imported (no cashed favicons), sidebar displays default one…I think it’s the same for imported bookmarks, can’t test it right now
Only BB was updateing favicons properly in dev builds

    • Vux777

actually it is reported as DNA-43480
I forgot about Grzegorz Miazga reply

  • Zin

Hi, instead of caring about looks you should care about these since this is what users want THE MOST:

  • Sล‚awomir Szewczyk

    When support for Netlix?

  • catup

opera beta even has a newer engine than opera developer.

    • Pretty sure they are going to change that.

    • ayespy

Developer (ver 34) will of course get Chromium 47. Beta never will. Ver 33 will move from beta to stable on Chromium 46. Ver 32 will always be on Chromium 45. Those are the Opera development rules.

  • Deeps

Has been an issue for me in opera for a while but 2x speed playback on HTML 5 video is very glitchy (works in google chrome though…)

  • Facebook is blocking Opera (& Safari 9) on 360 videos (which seem to use WebGL & Flash Player, I just tried Opera 32, Opera beta 33

    example https://www.facebook.com/StarWars/videos/vb.169299103121699/1030579940326940/?type=2&theater

    What is a 360 video?

    • Marko Koivuniemi

Yes it seems so. Vivaldi is also blocked. Amateurish way to block certain brands of browser instead of capabilities of browser.

      • Opera has a huge amount of better WebGL support than Safari does right now

      • tux

I can watch this vid with Vivaldi.

    • L33t4opera

Hi Chas4, you’re right, the video is served, or not, depending on the detected user agent. You can change the UA to the one, which is mentioned below (simply follow one of the below steps), and check if this helps in your case:
      1. Launch the Opera together with the switch, as follows: –user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_2) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/46.0.2490.52 Safari/537.36″or
      2. Add the above UA string, using an extension, which allows you to change the UA for a given domain, e.g. the DomainUserAgent, or for each URL, or website, e.g. the Custom UserAgent String.

      • Or use Developer Tools to mask the UA string with the one you mentioned

  • Mike Robinson

Opera crashes for me if going to a page with a self-signed certificate and choosing “show certificate” in the popup dialog (using Linux)

  • Jul

this build is unusable for me at the moment. It crashes on every page containing html5 videos (at least that’s what seems to be causing it):

    Page crashed
unfortunately, something caused this page to quit. It might have been an extension conflict or some other reason

Try reloading the page, or navigate to another page to continue

Happens on Youtube, HTML5 videos on imgur, some random other pages with videos as soon as the video tries to play (i see the first frame then it crashes). Flash videos are working fine (but who likes flash anyways).
Uninstalled Opera beta 33 (deleted user data) and re-installed -> same issue. No addons installed. Opera 32 stable is working fine.

  • Dark Magician

Opens default http, should use and prefer https for all connections when available.

    example http://www.emsisoft.com

    • Opens up with http in Microsoft Edge, too. Further this is as intended by the administrator (no redirect to https and no HSTS).

This is not a bug in Opera.

  • Videos won’r play at http://perezhilton.com

I have tried turning Turbo, Ghostery, and Adblock off and tried “click to play” and “run all plugins”, none of that helps.

I click on the video, and the video box disappears. I’ve tried using Google Chrome and the videos worked fine, so it is not a problem with the website.

I’m not talking about Perez’s YouTube videos, they work fine. It’s the videos that run directly on his site that is problematic.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Works fine here on Windows 10.

      • I deleted the “Opera Software” folder from the AppData/Local directory and let Opera create a new folder there, and the videos now run normally….sorry for the false alarm. They also run fine with turbo on. Last night, however, there was a Turbo issue with cbssports.com videos.

  • Bob Tarling

I’m having various issues with both Flickr and Farcebook with this build in X86
. In Flickr, pages load and then go solid black within 1 second, within Facebook, when trying to click on birthday notifications I just see a small pop-up for a split-second…

    • Bob Tarling

Also, Wunderground pages only partially load, and I cannot upload images to Facebook. All work fine in Chrome…

      • Aneta Reluga

Can you please report an issue to the bug tracking service, with more details? I am unable to reproduce it locally. Thanks in advance.

    • michsens

I found out that the behaviour of the libnotify notification varies according with the opera notification. If you click the body of the new notification it is recognised as simple closing action by the user – means there is no difference between closing via the cross or clicking to the notification’s body.
I am using Debian 9 stretch (testing).

  • Combing through my bookmarks with a clean browser, here are some sites where the videos wouldn’t work with Turbo on, but played with Turbo off. Some of these sites have some YouTube embedded videos, they work fine…I’m only talking about the non-YT videos.

I apologize if any of these are false alarms.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot for the report and the list of sites affected. Indeed, I can confirm the issue also from my location, and it’ll be taken care of.

  • PaulW

Looks like an issue that I had in dev 33 and 34 has now been ported to beta 33

“I use an app called KeyTweek which allows you to remap any key on the Windows keyboard. I remaped the left Windows key to “WWW Back” so that i don’t have to go to the top every time I want to go back a page. I have found in this version that this no longer works correctly and jumps back two pages. Just checked on my laptop that had the previous version on and it was fine but when I upgraded to this version it jumped back two pages as well..”

I know you can use the “Backspace” key to go back but it’s at the right top of the key board as apposed to the bottom left. This works in every other browser and application except for these new builds of opera..

I went back to stable 32 get fix this but I guess stable 33 when it gets released will also have this issue..

    • Mikolaj Boc

“I went back to stable 32 get fix this but I guess stable 33 when it gets released will also have this issue..”

We’ll try to fix this and backport to 33 ๐Ÿ™‚

      • PaulW

        Many thanx..

        • Mikolaj Boc

  • Maybe i miss something here, but on Opera Mac OS X (always the latest stable build, and also always the latest Opera Beta), if you want to export your bookmarks in app, without using the sync feature, how is it done? Or is it something that is missing? If so, please implement that simple feature, as there is lot’s of reasons user can’t use the sync service, nor backing up the files in Library.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Add wunderground.com to the list. It refuses to load the 10 Day Forecast when you select a city with Turbo on, but works fine with Turbo off.

  • Irina Tykhnenko

It seems Opera Beta for Windows is useless now: no google mail, no YouTube, no Google Hangout. These sites always crash again and again.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Hi, do you have WinXP?

      • Irina Tykhnenko

        Yes, WinXP32
And now Opera 32 updated and all this pages crash too! So, Opera didn’t work now with Windows XP? I hate Chrome but now it’s only I have… Good bye, Opera!

        • Aneta Reluga

It was an odd issue affecting XP only, but it is already fixed (available in the next release). That’s why I was asking about your OS.
I’m sorry about the inconvenience. Please note that XP usage is quite rare at the moment and diminishing with every day, yet the issue was prioritized for fixing as soon as it has been spotted.

          • Irina Tykhnenko

So, last updating did impossible to use Opera with Windows XP?

          • Aneta Reluga

With our checks – no more crashes indeed. Can you please confirm that it works for you with the newest beta update? Thanks!

          • Irina Tykhnenko

YouTube crashes sometimes, then I need to reboot my computer to work further. No delete cookies, no clean registry not help with it.

    • Carlos

      Same here on WinXP32

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi @irinatykhnenko:disqus – do you still have problems after updating to Opera beta 33.0.1990.20?

  • Luiz Carvalho

Playback of videos on youtube failure using html5 IInterface . The twitter and instagram videos do not open.

    Using Ubuntu 14.04.3 , Opera 32.0.1948.69.

  • Vux777

    pls don’t implement this

(every installed extension must/will have toolbar icon)

  • Mike Robinson

I’m unable to load the audio from here: https://www.wretchedradio.com/media/wretched-talk/daily-clip-october-05-2015 however it works with Chrome (Linux 64 bit)

    • L33t4opera

Hi Mike, on Ubuntu, you can install the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package, and follow the commands from point 3, mentioned here.

      • Mike Robinson

Thanks for your response @L33t4opera:disqus. Unfortunately it didn’t work. I installed the package and restarted Opera, but I still don’t get any audio.

        • L33t4opera

Hi Mike, it should work, are you pretty sure, that you’ve done also the steps, mentioned in point 3? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Add the following to the list: usmagazine.com

With “run all plugins” and turbo on, the site won’t let you see the video, it just plays the audio of the video clips. Like usual, without Turbo, everything’s fine.

No offense intended, I’m getting a bit discouraged by the bugs in Turbo, but even without Turbo, Opera is still faster than Chrome, so I still sticking with Opera.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Not exactly a bug, it’s because Turbo enable “click to play” and it doiesn’t work well when the page uses hidden plugin areas. So it’s more an issue with “click to play”.

Btw, unless you have a really bad and/or limited connection, there is no real benefit in using Turbo.

      • I ran a small experiment with Turbo. I took my five most visited sites, and used a extension to load each site at least 10 times with Turbo on and with it off. The averaged results were quite surprising. Three of the sites ran SLOWER with Turbo on (.18, .868, and .996 seconds slower). The other two were .49 and 2.95 seconds faster (because of large size of the site). Anybody else see a drop in speed with Turbo on?.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I’d say almost everyone. With Turbo enabled, the request needs to pass through its server what adds an additional step and, therefore, additional time to load the pages.

        • Vux777

turbo is useful only on slow networks (dial up) or if you are on mobile net and want to save traffic data
but if you are on “common” adsl (with flat rate), turbo will only slow you down
because it reroutes traffic through opera compression servers…and that takes time (and raises the ping)

edit: yea, Leo was faster ๐Ÿ™‚

  • michsens

I found out that the behaviour of the libnotify notification varies according with the opera notification. If you click the body of the new notification it is recognised as simple closing action by the user – means there is no difference between closing via the cross or clicking to the notification’s body. With that, you can not perform any notification action as open an options page or whatever.
I am using Debian 9 stretch (testing).

  • escruting

Opera is a nightmare to use on Mac OS. The tabs dont load in the background, they dont start loading until you change to them.

    • bwat47

Works fine here with OSX 10.11… the only scenario where they wouldn’t load in the background would be when you first open Opera if you have the ‘Delay loading of background tabs’ preference checked in Settings > On Startup

      • escruting

Theyre working like that, on startup, but also on every new tab opened on the background.
