We are getting closer with each day to the final release of Opera 20. This update contains the important fix for the dangling processes some of you encountered after closing Opera window. Please check if it’s fixed for you 🙂 Have fun testing, thank you for the feedback.

Great, the processes not closing was annoying.

  • L33t4opera

Thanks for the Info Marcin, good you fixed the “zombie’s invasion” 🙂

  • nanana1

Wow ! 3 Opera Next updates in 3 consecutive days. 😉

    • Marcin Mitek

Last minute fixes, Chromium updates… We want every single bit publicly available and tested.

  • A build a day keeps boredom away 😉

  • Vux777
  • oic

good, I think those ghost processes were actually from extensions that didn’t close with the browser

    • Marcin Mitek

      Nope 🙂

  • Piotr Karol Żółtowski

We are getting closer with each day to the final release of Opera 20

wow. So Opera Stable 20 will be released in next week, huh? 😉

    • 3 builds in a row sounds more like tomorrow rather than next week

      • Piotr Karol Żółtowski

        We will see 😉

      • Piotr Karol Żółtowski

Sorry for double posting, but I see that Chrome 33 is now in Stable channel, so maybe you are right 🙂

      • Leonardo Gomes

They usually don’t release stables on fridays.

        • taneli

          That’s the phucked-up-dev-build release day.
No, seriously, if there were any major bugs in the Stable version, they surely would prioritize fixing those ASAP so a workday on the next day is usually a good idea.

          • Marcin Mitek

Well, even (initial) dev release on Friday last week was an exception – because of the delay we already had. But you are right, it’s always good to have a workday before/after for Stable/Next releases.

  • Krzysztof Pogłódek

And again, no bookmarks manager. Yay!

    • Piotr Karol Żółtowski

How many times I and other users must see the same post? It’s kinda annoying.

      • Flag it, I did that.

      • Krzysztof Pogłódek

Lack of native bookmarks is also annoying. Internet Explorer on my windows 98SE had it.

    • BK

There is no bookmarks manager being made atm, so at least for a while, you have to hold on your breath.

      • Nekomajin42

        “for a while”
We hold our breaths for almost a year…

      • Yeah but these people make demands as if they’re paying you for it.

        • Bjarne Bertelsen

It’s true we don’t pay for Opera and we are free to use any other browser, but we like opera and want to use opera, and it is kind of annoying not to have bookmarks with sync.
Just add sync to the bookmarks bar and Opera would be a fantastic browser.

    • wahoospa

On Opera 19.0.1326.63, my Bookmark Importer is no longer grayed out and when I mouse over it it gets highlighted and when I click it, it takes me to the Add Bookmarks page. I cannot get it to work on any other installs of Opera, just this one installation. The picture show it highlighted.

  • There’s been only one Dev build, so do you intend to make it Next just like that? (it brings just one new feature anyway, which makes another one disappear but ok).

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess that they got behind schedule because of the problems with Developer 21, so they are now putting things in the right way.

So, yes, i think Developer 21 may be something just for the numbering. Although it has interesting features.

      • Aura in exchange of smooth scrolling and threaded compositing and gpu compositing, what else?

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Tabs Hibernation
          Viewport metatag support
          Full URL
          Overlay Scrollbars
          Save Sessions for Offline Restart

Most of them are still experimental.

          • Tabs hibernation, I’ve forgotten about that one. The rest I don’t care.

  • Bob Tarling

Good afternoon, can anyone please tell me why my web page here – http://www.ourweather.co.uk/gauges-ss.htm – doesn’t seem to render any gauges, yet it does on Chrome and IE?. Thank you.

    • mathman

I got gauges in 20.0.1387.37 – there was a lag in waiting for googleapis to load but once it loaded the gauges appeared and looked like it did when I loaded it in Opera 12.16.

      • Bob Tarling

Thanks for trying. My Windows failed yesterday, so reinstalled. I wonder if I should install Chrome, and try the Java Plugin for Chrome?…

        • Bob Tarling

With reguard to the webpage, it works with a fully-clean install of this release of 20, so if I want to backup my my speeddial tabs and passwords so that I can import them into a clean install, can anyone please tell me which files I need, and where they are?. Thank you in advance.

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Speedials: favorites*.*
            Passwords: Login Data*.*

        • Leonardo Gomes

You don’t need Java or any plugin on that page.

What are you seeing where the gauges should be? There is something or just empty space?

    • Vux777

I still didn’t install this lates version (I doub’t they screwed it that bad) but this is what I get in previous NEXT 20.0.1387.53

      • Bob Tarling

Thanks for that – my Wife gets the same issue on Chrome…

        • Bob Tarling

Works fine in IE though sadly…

          • Vux777

            probably plugin problem…flash or java
            IE have it’s own envirement

          • Bob Tarling

I’ve just installed Chrome, the site works fine in there. Perhaps I should try and find an older version of Opera Next (19) and install that… Tis rather annoying!

          • Bob Tarling

I’ve just tried installing both 32-bit & 64-bit versions of Java, but to no avail as far as this plug-in malarkey is with Opera 20. Does anyone have any other suggestions please?.

          • Vux777

          • Bob Tarling

Flash is installed, YouTube etc plays fine. The gauges etc on the web page are Jave… Thanks anyway :).

    • Sidney Guioy

i don’t know for your fauges, but for your background you might want to use

      background-position: center bottom;

instead of “left bottom”, looks better on big screens !

      • Bob Tarling

        Thanks Sidney :).

    • Leonardo Gomes

I’m seeing the gauges here, no need to install/enable anything.

  • romath

Something I’ve noticed all the way through with the webkit toolbars is that the forward and back arrows are often (but not always) grayed out even if there is a page behind or ahead. For example, I just went from Yahoo home page to MyYahoo page to a fund/stock link in my portfolio, which takes me to its own page. Only at that last step does the back arrow bolden. And if I use the latter to go back to the MyYahoo page, the forward doesn’t highlight.

  • Darklink88

speaking about invisible windows/processes, what about fixing this issue in MacOsx? I randomly get a blank white window under Opera main window. The only way that I found to fix this issue is removing the Opera data stored in ~/Library but it’s an annoying procedure

  • Wraith

It is Nice to see Opera for windows and mac evolving fast but I wonder:
When will come out Linux version ?

    • Piotr Karol Żółtowski

Wait for March about Linux version of Op… hmm… Chropera 😛

    • Ursul Fram

dude opera as we know and love is no more!! opera 15 was released on
Monday, May 27, 2013. after all this time opera 20 is still a piece of
*** when you compare with opera 12 or chrome or firefox or even ie11.
their silence and stubbornness when it comes to releasing opera12 under
an open source license is even worse!

      • Nekomajin42

They won’t open-source the Presto engine, because they still licence products that use Presto.

        • Ursul Fram

so? does open sourcing a piece of code nullifies their contracts? or maybe the opera CEO is one dumb leader who can learn from browsers history?

          • Nekomajin42

            That’s not how it works.

          • Or you’re dumb enough to understand Presto has never been under any GPL license, so there’s no obligation for Opera to open anything, it is their property.

  • Pesala

APNG Extension doesn’t work. Seems to be OK in Opera 19.

    • Have you given it permission to work in local files in Opera -> Extensions?

      • Pesala

I have now given permission to allow file URLs, but it still doesn’t work — not in Opera 19 or 20.

This should be built-in to Opera without needing an extension.

  • Darrien Lambert

Upgrade completed without zombies, so far so good.

  • MozPri

What about this? It’s really annoying. 🙂

    • BK

Hi MozPri, can you provide exact page link and some more details? We would like to reproduce it.

      • MozPri

Watch a youtube video. Then open a new tab and open any page from a speed dial. Before the page loads youtube video briefly appears.
        I’m using win7 32bit and flash player 12.

        • Operalino

I to have this. MozPri is right: this is really annoying!

For me it is the case that opening a homepage via speeddial let the last viewed video reappear for a short time. The time is long enough to identify the video.

        • ColinB1

Not confirmed here with Win8.1, 64bit and flash 12

          • Operalino

Uhm… I’m on Windows8.1, 64 and Flash 12 as well. For me, the bug appears.

        • Galijot

          Same here very annoying

        • Leonardo Gomes

          I’m not noticing it here.

          Win 8.1 x64.

        • Thomas Henry

          The same for me ! 8.1 64

    • Eroticus

      Get better PC / Internet …. ?

  • Bob Tarling

Could someone please tell me which file I need to import from the previous Opera Next v20 release, with my saved passwords on?. Thanks in advance :).

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Login Data*.*

      • Bob Tarling

Thanks Leonardo, I’ll give it a try!

    • Ice007

It´s the file “Login Data” in the profile folder (see opera:about)
Rest of backup files you find in the help [F1]:

      • Bob Tarling

        Thank you very much :).

  • lol So, does this fix that thing were the browser would remain “active” even after closing it? I had to open task manager to kill the process in order to be able to open the browser again. I’ll check that right now.

    • Marcin Mitek

      Yup, this should fix it.

  • Rangsang Purnama

Good jobs, Opera team… I just want to share about the problem I’ve got over and over: Opera always report my download as success even if the download is broken.. This broken message was known by its size that does’nt match to its original, or known when I try to execute it.

    • Marcin Mitek

Hi, we are aware of these issues and we are doing some testing to prevent that in future. Everything is going in the right direction, so expect more reliable downloads soon.

      • Rangsang Purnama

Thank you for your respon.. I’m waiting for the next Opera release..

      • ahoj1234

hopefully you are aware of “Opera always report my download as broken even if the download is success..” – actually I just switch 2 words and success is not the right word for it since Opera will not finish downloading (fail) if you have opened the file (which is downloading) – it just can’t rename from “.opdownload”. Though, I already mentioned this before AFAIK…

I hope that you are speaking about download handling in general 🙂 there is a lot to do (as I mentioned content menu etc…)

  • Alexandre Cavaco

As we’re getting closer to the final release, I wonder if the fix for the unencrypted auto suggest and search bar searches is going to be included in this 20 release, for some providers (google at least..).
    I’m refering to this: https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2014/02/opera-next-for-the-cognoscenti/#comment-1230544465

    • Alexandre Cavaco

I don’t know what happened with Disqus… I tried to delete the above post made by me, it was first deleted but then it reappeared like it was published by a Guest.

Can anyone from Opera delete the above comment, and this one? (as it was wrong, I’ve checked and the fix is included)

  • Alexandre Cavaco

I’m glad the auto-suggest and search bar are being sent encrypted now, at least for google (that I’ve checked).

    • Marcin Mitek

I deleted your comments, as requested.

      • Alexandre Cavaco

        Thank you 🙂

  • Tomáš Pavlík

What was causing these issues after browser’s closing?

    • Marcin Mitek

One part of the other fix was missing. It caused some type of windows (popups mostly) to exist even after the main window was closed.

  • novainc

Great reading that there might be a linux version after all!!! just knowing that it isn’t dead makes me happy 😀

  • LoverOfLife

How to export bookmarks as html ? Is there any extension for that ? please, help

    • L33t4opera

Hi LoverOfLife, you can copy the “Bookmarks” file, from the Opera profile directory, to the Chrome profile folder, then launch the Chrome, and perform the export of your bookmarks to HTML file in the “Bookmark manager”.

      • LoverOfLife

Thanks! Intersting 🙂 Still waiting for devs to add “bookmark manager” and wondering why so difficult to implement this feature.

  • kutchbhi

Can’t login into https://forums.opera.com/ . the moment I login it shows the page, then ‘Opera’s connection attempt to forums.opera.com was rejected.’

  • justSQL

Hey Opera team! I have selected the fonts to be in UTF-8, and i would like to know does that affect links too?

My name works when im not logged in to a certain site (theres no link in my name) but when im logged in my name displays broken (they’re not normal chars, theyre special but they work with UTF-8)

Would love an answer to this question.

    • justSQL

I’m begging you to answer. I know you guys are reading this, could you ask one of your engineers if you don’t know it yourselves?

  • The biggest problem for me is high CPU usage. What is interesting even compared to Chrome. Sometimes I have to switch to another browser. For example, this HD video in full screen – http://vimeo.com/87008050 – in Chrome running smoothly. In Opera jams. :/ (2×2.1 GHz, 4GB RAM)

    • Do you have a high-res screen? That would explain the stuttering.
e.g. on my device, Opera 19+ renders 3200*1800px whereas Chrome (and Opera up to version 18) only provide Full HD (1920*1080). This of course makes a difference in computational effort.

      • It seems that in this case the screen resolution doesn’t matter. It’s 1366×768.

  • Денис
  • aratuk

After updating and restarting Opera Next on OSX 10.9.2, the browser was unable to load any page, including even “About Opera” or “Preferences.” I get “Page Crashed. Unfortunately, something caused this page to quit…” Reloading page does nothing. Tried removing plist from Preferences folder and Operanext folder from Application support, and had same problem without extensions or anything.

Downloaded fresh binary and that has fixed it. Opens with old Application Support and plist, same tabs and extensions.

    • vinobaje

same thing here. Can you tell me where did you downloaded fresh binary from?

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Some images doesn’t load correctly. They seems to load partly. Has anyone notices similar behaviour? It doesn’t occur in every site just randomly. Haven’t noticed this earlier with latest Developer and Next versions before latest Developer version. (I switched to Next because Developer version seemed so buggy or “slowish”. (Win 8.1 64-bit)

  • Ralf Brinkmann
    • WB

      Is this the stable version?

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes. I’m just answering with it.

        • WB

          Thanks! Testing it too.

        • Last time I got 19 in advance thanks to you too, hahaha.

Hope this time they don’t temporarily remove like that day.

        • The most uninteresting release of all. Totally boring.

          • WB

At least now we got definitely free of Google search bar.

          • Please how do you do it? I remember I saw that and have been waiting the release just for that reason, but now I can’t find it.

          • WB

You must type the Konami Code inside “Configurations”.
Then something like “Hide search box in Speed Dial” will appear.

          • Thank you so much, just found it.
BTW I don’t understand why they’re hidden. Set width and height for SD items is there too and it is announced as one of the new features.

          • Joana Silva

Thanks, I intentionally never used this big, ugly and useless Google Search Bar, but as Daniel Aleksandersen said this is a trade agreement between Opera and Google since Google $lend$ Blink for Opera, so there is no hope for ordinary users seeing this toolbar removed because they don’t know how to use Konami Code, so they will have to live with this aberration. 🙁

          • Vux777

…trade agreement between Opera and Google since Google $lend$ Blink for Opera,…

actually, guys from Opera were involved in developing Blink engine

Blink is a web browser engine developed as part of the Chromium project by Google with contributions from Opera Software ASA and others.

          • WB

Thats right Joana. I think they dont want many people to disable that Search Bar. They said many people actually use that instead of searching through the address bar.

    • Just tried transfer of entire profile from 20 stable to 21 dev, everything works great, konami code included.

    • oic

Possible bug? I noticed when I was upgrading it, it show African in the language selection by default

  • Tanel

From time-to-time (but only occasionally), my Opera Next surprises me with lovely back/forward arrow animations when doing a two-finger-swipe on my MacBook. Is it Christmas yet?

  • Jetman

Would it be possible to add the ability to reskin opera entirely, rather than the theme just covering the start menu? I find opera to be much too bright, and would like to use a Darker theme; something that would make the tab windows black instead of white.

  • Thomas Henry

is there a particular reason why opera and chrome can’t display a twitch stream at 60 fps? it used to but not anymore for me. any stream that is at 60 fps i only get about 30 according to fraps.

why can’t I just open files without saving them?

Why when there is an extended period of time after Next goes stable and is waiting for the new Next version, does Next not keep updating along with the stable release? For example, the last update with next was on Feb 27 with version 20.0.1387.59. It went stable on March 4 and to date is on version 20.0.1387.82 (at least 2 stable updates). Why do you not update Next with the Stable channel versions until the new Next 21 is released? This does not reward your Next beta testers by keeping their version frozen as new updates are released while they are waiting for the new Next version to come along. At the moment the Next users are using outdated versions which should not be happening…

    • Leonardo Gomes

Why do you not update Next with the Stable channel versions until the new Next 21 is released?

Because then it would be Stable and not Next.

Each stream has a purpose and is updated according to it.

  • L33t4opera

New build for the Opera Next arrived: 21.0.1432.31 😉

  • John

Hi Guys, I like Opera so much but with the last update I got troubles with the flash player. I can’t watch any video. I don’t know why. Can you help me, please. Thanks

    • Leonardo Gomes

What happens when you try to watch a video?

  • Daniel Carvalho

I am having some problems with my Opera Next 20. Whenever I open a new Youtube tab, the player resizes automatically to fit the page, and offers very limited resizing options – what doesn’t happen if I open the video on the very same tab I was browsing the site previously, as it behaves normally.

Some other problem I have is regarding opening new tabs – no matter the site they’re originated from. On previous Opera stances I could choose if those tabs would open on the side of the tab I was on or at the end of the tabs section. With Opera Next 20, I’m limited to the first choice, which is actually pretty incovenient for me.

Another thing that’s been bugging me is the favorites bar. On previous stances it always had the icons for every site registered, and now it only gives me some random page icons. It was rather easy for me to navigate through the symbols than the actual addresses so, once again, it’s rather inconvenient for me. Also, I liked how it would actually “squish” all the items instead of hiding them upon reaching a given number.

So, I would like to know if there is any way to fix any of those problems. If not, then I’ll stick with my older version of Opera until so. Thank you.

  • KatlandKat

I am on Opera21.0 and trying to save my speed dial bookmarks and can’t find the export. I have to format my hard drive and don’t want to loose my bookmarks. Can anyone help?

    • Vux777

from opera profile backup(copy somewhere) bookmarks file (for bookmarks obviously), favorites.db (speed dial’s), stash.db
…I usually also transfer thumbnails.db (sd custom thumbnails) and favicons
You can also try login data (passwords), but I think they wont work after OS reinstall (security reason I guess)

you can find where is opera profile from O-menu>>about Opera

  • polocanada

Same CPU issue here – Opera 20 stable version and mostly consumes 100% of resources when loading a few pages at once. It’s stuck for 1-2 minutes at 100% and everything comes to crawl on Mac OSX 10.6.8. I use Matrox 3840 x 1080 two monitor setup. I don’t think there is difference in size of the monitor as the same issue is on my 1366×768 monitor.
