Hi there! I have not written here for some time, but we have gathered a really nice number of fixes (and a Chromium update) to share. This is the last update to the Opera Next stream before we will take a short break for the Holidays (until the New Year). Head over to the full changelog to see what our developers and testers did to make your favorite browser even better and faster. Have fun testing, and thank you for your feedback and reports!

  • Chromium updated to 32.0.1700.55
  • Crash- and bug fixes
  • Improved migration from old Presto instances

Thanks for the info, and for the update Marcin πŸ˜‰ Downloading, and testing πŸ™‚

    • nanana1

Okay, be back after Christmas for more Opera updates !

  • escruting

Still being logged off of Sync everytime i launch the browser.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Happens eventually on Opera 20 here.

  • Dark Magician

Server slow as per usual… πŸ™

  • Got my bookmarks imported from Chrome by using the xmarks bookmark sync & using the opera extension that lets you install a chrome extension. You can put xmarks on both Chrome & Opera and it will use the xmarks sync feature to populate opera bookmarks directly from Chrome πŸ™‚
This worked for me and ATM since the bookmark accessibility problem is fixed, what bugs me most is how light the UI theme is and how a “theme” doesn’t do much other than change the opera:// page backgrounds lol

    • Vux777

      there is a shortcut
you could just copy bookmarks file from chrome to opera

      • LOL if that works that wud be funky, their JSON format isn’t even the same… and have quite different fields but some common, also Opera doesn’t give access to the “other bookmarks” folder and it isn’t accessible unless its on the bookmark bar(QAB) but I’ll give that a try sometime lol.

        • Vux777

I did it that way in one of the previous builds.
And from that point just moving my bookmarks file to newest build (or channels)

  • Gruia

please make tabs move to the sides.
and please keep feeds integrated.. somehow

  • 0.o

Im a bit unsure about when this happens, but when you are watching a page filled with many gifs that should loop Opera only loops them once and then the gifs start lagging and only repeating the first few frames, started happening within last update (before this)

    • Dark Magician

I have no problem with GIF in this build. Can you give an example?

    • Marcin Mitek

Some of them are not looped, we are investigating. DNA-14677 for future reference.

      • Vux777

        little more info on that…
in latest dev, after first run, gif start skipping from first to last frame. In this build (next), gif runs one time and then stops.

that’s my experience with that gif bug

        • Marcin Mitek

  • P30Carl

I think you should speed up updating Opera with most-requested features.
And please don’t start every single post with things like “I have not written here for some time”.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Right, they should start with the weather report. πŸ™‚

      • L33t4opera

        Nice one Leonardo πŸ˜‰

      • SkyWarriorBR

“Yay, weather report ‘feature’ will come back!”
Sorry, I HAD to say that πŸ™‚

    • I have not commented here in some time. Will make sure we consider moving back to local whether reports. πŸ˜‰

      • Vux777

…or some catchy words from mega hit’s like

        Oppan Gangnam style
        Ayyayaya coco jambo ayyayai

        … πŸ˜›

      • L33t4opera

Weather reports are good and appreciated, nevertheless I suppose, what is better than that, are the detailed changelogs pinned to the announcements, and the best are frequent, and more significant changes πŸ˜‰
But besides all of this above, it’s nice to see you back here πŸ™‚

    • Marcin Mitek

I think this is the only post that started like that. Some people just started writing for our blog and they want to say hello to You, our users. We can post the changelog and link to the build only, but it wouldn’t be a blog anymore, right?

  • afurman

DNA-14457 seems has been resolved (Bad labels formatting in Gmail – when a message is opened all associated labels are stacked instead of being arranged in a line).

  • So… HTML 5 videos are still displayed in tiny resolution for me. Gifs still don’t loop. Well, and this https://www.runescape.com/game?html5=1 still crashes for me too.

    • Marcin Mitek

      Well, it’s Chromecast, not Operacast.

      • Yea… But, it’s based on Chromium. Can Opera really not support it?

  • Vux777

When clicking on bookmarks bar folder, fly-out menu blinks once.
That’s only first time on first click, better to say. When none of the menus are active.
If I move cursor to another folder there is no blinking.
Previous next and couple of last dev channels also behave like that

  • hundred.or.zero

Still using Opera 12 for two primary reasons:
    1) I don’t love chrome based Opera the way I loved Presto based one.
    2) Chrome based Opera still not available for Linux (Which is my primary Operating system).

So… if Opera doesn’t regain the features it once had, and if it is not made available for Linux in near future, I will have to migrate to another browser which I don’t want to.

    • Mikanoshi Kimemoshito

Just two?) I have 10 reasons minimum. Actually the only thing that is better in Blink browser is compatibility with some sites. Everything else is terribly casual now. 12 version ftw!

      • Martin Brada

Maybe the only one but actually the one that makes it better browser.

        • Mikanoshi Kimemoshito

Ok, way to go with removing my posts…
I’ll say it shortly: no, it doesn’t.

          • Martin Brada

It is only my personal opinion. I did not say that someone could not have different priorities.

        • mathman

Agree, which is why I’m still using Presto Opera 12.16 – it displays more pages properly than does Blink Opera (Google Chrome screws them up also so it’s not limited to Opera). Even IE displays them correctly. Haven’t found a ‘report this site’ on Blink Opera (the very few times I’ve tried it) to report them though…

          • Martin Brada

            I have an opposite experince.

          • Opera 15+ is definitely more compatible than Opera 12. If you are seeing something else, there must be something wrong on your end.

  • ammodytes

    this bug:
    http://i.imgur.com/A7Kjy62.jpg still not fixed

also youtube bug is still present in this new build πŸ™

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess both will be listed on the changelog when they are fixed.

    • You do actually need to provide more exact data and URLs to make yourself understood.

      • ammodytes

well this happens on too many sites for me, for example flickr

        • Joel Spadin

This happens randomly on just about any site with large images. Reloading the page makes it go away.

    • disinvis

Bug appears on various websites and can not be systematization. However, not all images is broken .

    • Dmitriy Titarenko

have same bug after update 19
its appear more often on large images i think

    • netmain

Confirmed, It’s probably caused by opera://flags/#enable-d3d11, try to disable it and restart !!

  • pajousek

Will developer build get update as well before xmas? πŸ™‚

    • Leonardo Gomes

    • Dark Magician

      Doubt that.

  • Have you got any feedback on what you want to read about on this blog? Be very specific and reply to this comment.

    • Emanuele

what I want to read here? A clean public roadmap could be an interesting beginning πŸ˜‰

      – we’ll fix (copy exactly from O-Presto) the text selection on links in O21
      – Notes will be reintroduced in O22
      – Full GUI customization in O23

      and so on πŸ˜›

      • Marcin Mitek

Lot of things may happen during 3 releases (that’s more than 18 weeks, remember), priorities shift, more fixing/polishing/testing is required, something new may pop in (emergency release because of some security fix?). It’s really hard to tell in such advance. I think we stated already that introducing new things in dev stream should give you an overview of what’s going (and what not) to happen in next 12 weeks.

        • odinuv

          a) There is such thing called a “vision” which is not supposed to change every quarter
          b) There is practically nothing happening in dev stream, 90% of the changelog are bugfixes. So that gives no idea at all.

          • Marcin Mitek

Ad. a) Our first goal was to build solid foundation for future. I think (this is my personal opinion) we did that. In less then a year. It wasn’t easy. Now it’s a good time to kick off with new things.
            b) Following changelog may be misleading, tasks that introduce new features may be flooded with lot of bugfixing around it. We are not pushing billion of new features at once. Quality first, not quantity.

          • odinuv

ad a) fine, but 1) you haven’t told us “don’t expect anything special in first year, we are building foundation” and 2) you have the foundation, so what’s next ? You know, I still have absolutely no idea why i should use chropera, what is (or will be) it’s selling point?

ad b) I also follow highlights in the blogposts, so to quote highlights for version 20:

            Extensions chrome.downloads API (DNA-13993)
Drag tabs onto the bookmarks bar (DNA-12485)
Confirm exit when using Command–Q (DNA-12338) (Mac only)
Improved stash screenshots (DNA-13588). No more blurry scaled snapshots, hopefully (NB: we haven’t tested every URL on the Web)
Improved drag and drop between Speed Dial and Bookmarks Bar (DNA-12723)
Performance improvements of theme loading (DNA-12816)
Settings | Advanced: Use smaller speed dial thumbnails (DNA-12781)
Settings | Power-user: Width and Height of speed dial thumbnails (DNA-12781)

Apart from downloads.api, which is unclear what it will be good for. What is THE MAJOR feature for this release? Dragging tabs to bookmarks?

          • BK

You probably know that many features available in the browser world have been invented by Opera. No wonder, it’s easier to copy than to invent. Stay tuned with Opera to be first with the next big thing.

          • odinuv

100% agree with that, and that was always the main reason i used Opera

          • Emanuele

            Good old day’s … πŸ˜›

          • wheany

What the hell does that even mean?

      • gdv

I really like this idea, even if it can’t be quite so specific regarding which version will address a particular issue. A simple listing of previous Opera 12 features, functionalities, and options that are intended to be renewed would be very nice, even without any timeline at all. See below for my additional thoughts on this.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      – Weather reports. :-);
      – Information about new releases;
      – Information about what you are working on;
      – Discussion/Debate about future features.

    • booo

      -informations about future releases
-a post where u talk about Linux release, explaining why it is taking so long, how it will be, if it will support pepper flash, when it will be released (not the date, just like the month or for example 1st quarter of 2014 or whatever)

and yeah, posts with weather reports and photos are funnier

    • gdv

As a variation on Emanuele’s idea above (https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2013/12/opera-next-19-0-1326-19-update-last-christmas/#comment-1166854538) I would like a simple listing of previous Opera 12 features, functionalities, and options that are intended to be renewed. A rough timeline or rough priority sequence would be nice if possible, but neither are really necessary.

Any anticipated completely new features/functions/options could be included in the list as well, but my sense is that there currently is a lot more concern about “missing” features/functions/options that users rely upon and prize in earlier Opera versions.

I would prefer a listing on a single page (URL) that can be easily and regularly updated by the Desktop Team and easily found by users to revisit/review from time to time (e.g., maybe a standing https://www.opera.com/desktop/roadmap/ link appearing on all https://www.opera.com/desktop/ pages), so we don’t have to search all over for info about each separate feature/function/option of personal interest. I’m sure an initial listing could be easily populated by the Desktop Team. No doubt users would nominate their own favorites to be added to the list if they are not already included.

Maybe a simple Likert score from -2 to +2 could be included for each item to indicate the degree of commitment or certainty on the Desktop Team that any given feature/function/option (-2) Definitely will not; (-1) Probably will not; (0) Maybe will/Maybe won’t; (+1) Probably will; (+2) Definitely will; be included in a future release. (I’m sure the scale and wording could be refined.)

As needed, each item on the list could link to a discussion thread for that particular item and/or to a blog posting whenever there is an announcement about the item.

    • Vux777

others already mentioned features list etc…

Considering blog itself, I would like some sort of old MyOpera start page (latest activities) to be implemented on blogs.Opera.com.

I understand that Disqus is independent system (and sucks big time) but still you have ability to control comments and thus, deliver them to users in way it suits Opera community.

Some sort of starting page, where users will be logged with their Disqus acc (well, you choose that), and be able to see new activities on Opera blogs (articles and comments). Those that they are prescribed to.

At the moment, I’m following discussions from my email. When following link from email, not all comments are loaded in particular thread, and overall experience kinda sucks.
Also using Disqus Dashboard (shows only my comments and replays to it) and RSS for new Blog articles. ๏̯͑๏
      (RSS for comments still bugged)

That’s three different services just for following Opera, something that I was able on MyOpera very easily from one simple page.
That would be close disqus environment, only affecting https://www.opera.com .

    • Onaj Tamo

Just as someone else said, all I would like to know i what is happening with the Linux version.

    • Vux777

O-team mentioned couple of times that the whole Opera UI is re-written. Thats that mean that you have ability to create side panel?
…or chrome architecture is still no-go

  • Bugfixer

    “-webkit-transition: top 300ms ease-in-out” doesn’t work since version 19. Please fix it!

    • Does transition work? (You have it listed as fallback right?) No current versions of WebKit browsers use the prefixed -webkit-transition anymore.

      • Bugfixer

It doesn’t work without vendor prefix.

  • Akbalder

The search engines imported from Opera 12 don’t seem to work. When I try to use one old search engine, the string “%s” isn’t replace by the searched words in the url.

  • Pedro Costa

Is this the last release before christmas or the last release, from this stream, before christmas? I would like to see another plenty twenty before that πŸ˜‰

  • Christian Wallrich

    Feedly doesn’t work in Offroad-Modus.
    win8.1 x64

  • Martin Brada

To give it shortly, I do not use my browser to stare at beautifully organized bookmarks that cannot be opened. It is an exaggeration but that is the point.
In my opinion, the far most important feature of a browser is the window that has to display the web sites correctly. When this does not work, everything else is just worthless decoration.
But as I have already written, I respect your different priorities. I just wanted to explain my approach.

  • ammodytes

some videos on YT dont even load :/ even after refresh

    • That probably means it’s trying to load HTML 5 video. Switch it to flash and it should work.

      • ammodytes

        i am using flash :/

      • icetom

Some youtube-channels I am subscribed too since ages now have been switched to HTML5 video. There is no way to use flash for them, maybe some extensions. But vanilla Opera Blink can not properly display them because of the lack of a h 264 license.

        • ammodytes

That sucks man….. YT is not fully usable now, i must use other browser just for YT

  • Anderson Araujo

I get a eternal “waiting for server response” when i try to use the Opera Sync to bring back my speed dial to this new fresh install. The flags server options is on already.

  • nilicule

Search engines using POST submit their data in GET (no attempt at POST is ever made).

  • pap

    – “Go to web address” opens page on active tab, Opera 12 does it on new tab (if changed in options)
    – if You want to close Opera when active downloads it just close without any question, it should ask me if I’m sure what I’m doing
    – search by ‘/’ on numeric pad does not work, even after enabling ‘advanced keyboard shortcuts’ for Opera 12 it does not matter which slash You’re using
    – I can’t open new tab by double click on any free space on tab bar,
    – I don’t even want to know how new bookmarks system works
    – I even can’t pin Opera to windows start bar – if I pin ‘luncher.exe’ i have two Opera icons when Opera is opened. When I pin Opera.exe, I have to re-pin it every Opera update.
    – After hard reset of PC Opera don’t ask me if I want to open ‘automaticlly saved session’ it just opens speed dial – I know I can change in options to force Opera to start ‘Continue where I left off’, but then Opera do this everytime. Normally I like to start browsing with speed dial.

That’s only small amount of little, annoying things in ChromeOpera.
I really want Opera to go step back… to Opera 12.

  • Tom J

Is it just me, or is gif playback broken? Like I go onto a gif-heavy page, and more than half of them don’t play back.

  • Br

Is there a similar manifest stanza to “minimum_chrome_version” for Opera extension manifests?

  • Whether the browser is simple or not doesn’t really depend on the engine.

  • Xavier Roemer

Can anyone tell me if there is a option to show the complete URLs? I really don’t care for the shortened versions. I want to know on which part of the site I am. Actually, I don’t get the idea behind shortening the urls.

  • cgebhard

Offroad mode inhibits connection to feedly.com. After a minute of loading opera just shows “Connection refused: feedly.com:80”
Page is loaded normally with Offroad switched off.

The problem does not occur in current Opera stable (18.0.1284.68), despite same settings/extnsions in both builds.

  • Adrien Arculeo

Do the linux people are so few and the market so small that you don’t even care for answering our concerns? This would be enough for leaving the boat I came on with version Opera 5. I even paid for some time to not have the advertisement on the top right if you remember your business model at the time. Now stop messing around. Post us one single line “We are working on it” or “We are not working on it”. In any case, tell us what happened. End of post and we are happy (for now)

    • Leonardo Gomes

They already answered: no linux builds before march, at least.

  • L33t4opera

First new build this year – Opera Next 19.0.1326.26, enjoy πŸ˜‰

    About Opera
    Version information
Windows Vista this setup still works but is starting to drive me unless there is a newer version that has the notepad and other features built in i will be looking into another main browser over the weekend.
