It’s unusual to have a new developer version on Friday, thus we also have an unusual non-default screenshot to start with – all in dark.

Important things first

This initial build of Opera 46 comes with important fixes for the out of memory bug when using VPN and one nasty crash that might appear during startup. It’s important for us to verify them – our lab tests suggest there should be no further problems, but to be completely sure we need your help. Weekend comes, so browse a lot.

Further UI changes

In addition there are multiple UI-related fixes. The most visible ones are addressing the misbehaving tooltips both in normal and private mode. Changes specific to Mac, such as removing little visual glitches and minor fixes for ad blocker, have been made.

Under the hood

This version comes with an updated Chromium (59.0.3047.4) and enabled expensive background tabs throttling (opera://flags/#background-tab-throttling-max-delay-30s). You can try it out yourself: background timer throttling demo. If you encounter any problems related to background tabs and their behavior let us know.

Nice! Thank you for this new build!

    • Enjoy and test, test, test 🙂

  • tankfeeder

you fixed memory leak on youtube. good.

    • Ari

      What was the bug?

      • tankfeeder

        memory leak on youtube

        • Ari

          You’re a smart person, aren’t you? 😉

      • Leonardo Gomes

The one mentioned on the post.

        • Ari

Yeah I was expecting that answer

      • Leonardo Gomes

The bug ID seems to not be listed on the changelog.

    • PakSae

I can’t find DNA for it in changelog.

      • Ari

Yeah, that’s because this smartass is confused about VPN memory leak that affects EVERY SINGLE page.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, it seems to not be listed.

  • guitaraholic

looking really good and ALMOST tempted me from moving from Chrome…. my only query is why there doesn’t seem to be a way to override the default ‘speed dial’ / home button to a different page OR change the new tab page to something else?

    • Almost? 🙂

Speed dial is what makes Opera… Opera. You can customise it:
      – change content and more stuff, keep it organised in folders
      – change wallpaper (there pretty nice selection)
      – add sd extensions: https://addons.opera.com/en-gb/extensions/?tag=speeddial&order=popular&language=en

But you can’t replace it. It wouldn’t be Opera anymore.

      • Andis Spriņķis

I really like Speed dial, it’s my preference over any other kinds of start pages, but I think you should still give users the freedom to replace it with whatever they find appropriate. There are many other cool things that define Opera.

      • Nekomajin43

That’s the attitude I’m talking about all the time… “It can be done with an extension API, but we block it, because we think ours is cool.”

      • Carson Coyote

But Opera 12 allowed you to set a specific page as your homepage, and also let you have a “Home” button that would take you to that page.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, Opera Presto was a different product for a different time.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, regarding the SD and new tab page, you can run the Opera with the following switch:
      On Windows: "pathtolauncher.exe" --homepage="https://mypage.com"
      On Linux: /path/to/opera-developer --homepage="https://mypage.com"
      On Mac: /path/to/Opera --homepage="https://mypage.com".
Additionally, if you select the option “Open the start page” in Settings > Browser > On startup, then the Opera should open your custom url also at startup.

Alternatively, if you would like also to override the “Start page” button, install the New Tab Start Page Pro extension, and go to the Options, set new tab/start page url, and select “Yes” on the right of “Also, Override the “Start Page” button”, press “Save”.

  • PakSae

Resizing video popup still has issue.

  • PakSae

In not pinned sidebar, clicking Settings make sidebar icons smaller and still refresh entire page.

    • Wando Schneider

Settings Page is not a component, so zoom settings is different, and it loads the entire page.

      • PakSae

But there is no such icon size issue before O46.
Anyway, it is very strange regardless of component or not

  • L33t4opera

Hi Maciej, congrats on the first release of the Opera developer 46 😉
Friendly reminder: I'm looking forward to see fixed the previously reported bugs - all of them still occur in this build, and in the latest Opera beta (45.0.2552.89).

    New flags:
    – opera:flags#adblocker-selective-mode
Makes adblocker disabled by default and only block adds on user selected sites.

    – opera:flags#disable-v8-ignition-turbo
Disable V8's new Ignition interpreter and TurboFan compiler for JavaScript execution.

    – opera:flags#enable-resource-prefetch
"Speculative Prefetch" fetches likely resources early to improve load times, based on a local database (see opera://predictors). "Learning" means that only the database construction is enabled, "Prefetching" that learning and prefetching are enabled.

    – opera:flags#enable-mojo-loading
Use Mojo IPC instead of traditional IPC for resource loading.

The #background-tab-throttling has been replaced with #background-tab-throttling-max-delay-30s.

    • Hi. Yes, problem visible internally as well. However things related to stability have always the highest priority.

      • L33t4opera

Sure, there’s no hurry. I understand, that there’re other things to do, with higher priorities, that’s why I wrote “friendly reminder” 😉 Just please be aware, that those are three different bugs, that are a little annoying.

      • Nekomajin43

Do we have to turn ON the adblocker on every site manually? It will be a deal breaker. Back to an extension then.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Only if you have enabled the selective ad-blocking flag. It will add an * to the exceptions list, what will enable ads in all sites.
Removing it enabled ad-blocker on all pages.

          • Nekomajin43

You know the thing with flags…

    • MadEddy

So we have to enable #enable-v8-future and disable #disable-v8-ignition-turbo to use ignition+turbofan ?

      • L33t4opera

Hi, the #enable-v8-future has to be removed from the Opera, as it was removed in Chr M59. The #disable-v8-ignition-turbo is a new “kill switch”: “If you leave it to Default, there’s a certain chance that you get the old compiler pipeline due to A/B testing. Set it to Disabled, to ensure that you get the new pipeline, or set it to Enabled to go with Crankshaft, and Full-Codegen again” – the source link.

        • MadEddy

I was confused by the #enable-v8-future that was remaining. So it is just inactive until removal. Thanks for the answer, lad.

screenshot to start with – all in dark
Would be great if I could use it in private windows as well. Currently the contrasty theme burns my eyes, and since Opera can’t empty the browsing data on exit, I have to use it in private mode.

    https://i.imgur.com/2r1v0Cp.jpg

The private mode theme really needs some adjustments one way or the other, it’s really hard on the eyes to read what’s at the top. Reminds me of a zebra..

Would make at least a red or some other color, but not white in an incognito window!
Сделали бы хотя бы красный или другой какой цвет, но не белый в инкогнито окне!

  • John Rambo

Not to sound ungrateful, but Opera on Linux does not seem to be improving at all. Reborn introduced serious desktop integration regressions, e.g. white text on white background in the Opera menu; also, videos aren’t playing on any website. It’s pretty much unusable. I do like the browser but I simply can’t use it on Linux. If Linux’s small userbase turns it into such a low priority for you guys, you may be better off just dropping support.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, regarding the H.264 videos, please have a look here.

  • Arktos

Pre-Reborn Opera was the best thing by far. Now it just got bloated, heavy, clunky and full with problems it didn’t had before. Even the Tabs, which were something that the browser could handle very well, with several opened without any issues, and lightyears ahead of what was seen in other browser, now with Reborn, got ruined.
Also, WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram? Why not make these optional? Forcing this on users is not good at all, specially concerning privacy.
I really don’t like the direction Opera is taking after Reborn.

It’s just like Opera Neon, you guys tried to “reinvent” browsing and it was just a bad experience altogether. Sure, it was pretty, just like Reborn tried to follow suit (and failed in my opinion, before Opera’s visual adjusted to your Operational System, now it just feels odd and even ugly).
But you don’t need more Designers, you actually need to invest more in your Programmers, who were doing a good job until the advent of Reborn.

Being “edgy” is actually the opposite of cool, strange as it seems, and people don’t want that. People want a lightweight browser, with actual useful functions (Native VPN and AdBlock, Video pop-up, spot on) and not gimmicks (Facebook Messenger, really?).

Now, not wanting to dwell too much in talking about your competition, but look at Mozilla: They’re failing miserably in the Browser department – their patents keep them alive today. And yes, their marketshare is growing, but that’s because of IE’s death. Every browser is growing because of that, even Opera – because they are, precisely, doing everything wrong that I mentioned you guys started doing. They recently released a “preview” of the new FireFox visual, and it’s horrendous, people hated it, and meanwhile their e10 multi-threaded tabs are stale and frustrating, completely useless, their browser still leaks memory like crazy and it’s incredibly heavy.

Please Opera, go back to the rightful path.

    • M92

      You can deactivate the messengers.

      • PakSae

It must be installable like sidebar extension.

    • nanana1

The IM clients are requested by some, rejected by others.
Anyway you can de-select them or even close the sidebar altogether and you get your pre-Reborn browser interface.

    • PakSae

It will be good to refer to vivaldi.

    • What problem do you see?

      • hassanraza

it says opera could not import data .

  • redfox

The blue-green color of the folder icons in the Bookmarks Bar looks ugly, especially with the dark theme. Why didn’t you make them light grey, for example? Win7/32.

  • YouTube videos just buffer endlessly for me on this build, anyone else having this issue? Tried turning on/off various extensions, ad blocking, etc.

    • Leonardo Gomes

What OS? Youtube videos are playing fine here on Windows 10.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      Is opera://flags/#media-windows-mf-demuxer enabled?

      • Turning that on resolved the issue! It’s off by default in this release, any downside to leaving this on? Not clear why piping through mediafoundation would be a downside.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

In the blog with to last Beta (one day before) they said, that they forgot to enable it by default. So I think in future versions it will be enabled.

          • Yikes. Serves me right for not reading the release notes. Thanks.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Strange because it shows as enabled by default here.

  • Cory Simenson

I have the current (44.0.2510.857) version. There are so many things that I like about it. However, you folks seem to be having issues with the OOM problem every time. Every release, in spite of this articles claim the problem was fixed. I have Windows 10 32-bit, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2G RAM. I use HTTPS Everywhere and is my only extension. This issue happens at random times and in random ways. It can happen when I’m checking my email only (ad free Hushmail), or checking my email and Facebook at the same time. It can happen when I’m watching Youtube and logged into Facebook. When it happens, I close any other open tabs. It seemed like doing that worked until I would close a tab and reload the other. Upon that reload attempt, I get the, you guessed it, OOM message. One tab reload, out of memory right away.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Did you read the title of this post?

      • Cory Simenson

Actually I did. The updater as part of this browser said I have the most current stable version. Besides that I entered a search for OOM issue help and it brought me here.

        • Leonardo Gomes

So you read it saying ‘Initial Opera developer 46 release’, right? So why would you think that a fix in an Opera developer 46 build would appear on your Opera Stable 44?

When 46 reaches the stable channel or when they release a stable build with the fix back-ported you and everyone else will get it on stable versions of Opera.

        • Cory Simenson

I was looking for information that might help anywhere I could hope to find it. Fine, I’ll deal until a stable version comes out. However, every thread I’ve seen you post on you come across as smug and arrogant. Sarcasm has it’s time and place, but it isn’t on blog meant to help people figure out your browser. Who made you a moderator and are they aware of how you treat end users?

    • Hey. We are currently are aware and able to reproduce two issues related to OOM. One is memory leak with enabled VPN other seems to be related to live video streams. For VPN we have initial fix available in developer build 46.0.2556.0. But your case doesn’t seem to mention using VPN or video problems.

      • Cory Simenson

I thought I had mentioned the VPN, I didn’t, my apologies. I do use the VPN. However I did include a scenario that involves Youtube. It does not always happen with videos. I have set the browser up to request permission to play some video, but that is mostly confined to Facebook. Since it happens so randomly, even in the scenarios where there are no videos involved I get the OOM error, I came to this blog hoping that someone else had the same issue and there were some suggestions. I have no experience in coding and am uncertain whether or not I should download the developer version of Opera 46. I don’t want to inadvertently mess something up. I will try this without the VPN, but that is the main feature I switched to this browser for. Thanks.

        • Fix for VPN seems to be working correctly so far on Friday developer build. We are currently testing this on beta stream which we updated yesterday. If all goes good we will push the fix to stable this week so hopefully you will be able to check in on stable by the end of the week.

          • Cory Simenson

Thank you for telling me that. This was the kind of help I was looking for. I appreciate it very much.

Startup and tabs opening are to slow..

    • Is that an issue with the latest update?

      • Vlad T

It seems that with every new version startup is getting slow and slow..
And there is small delay when opening new empty tab since Opera 40 has released.

  • Томица

Aaaaaaand ffmpeg is broken again. Thanks, Opera.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t know if there is a connection, but can you check, if opera://flags/#media-windows-mf-demuxer is enabled?

      • Томица

@ralfbrinkmann:disqus I’m on Linux, so all I’m getting there is ‘Not supported on your platform’. However this is a very well known issue on Linux. I wrote many times about it and I’m not the only one either. The developers are aware of it, but still they seem to make the problem even worse with each new release.

Last time I wrote, I was told by @Arjan van Leeuwen to use `–ffmpeg-preload-mode=permissive` as a command line parameter, and that worked well enough. With the latest release not even this helps.

I’m pretty much getting sick of these miserable regressions in Opera.

        • Radek Rzepecki

This is not a regression. Opera depends on chromium’s ffmpeg package to play h264 videos, we dont have our own codecs for Linux. So you need to have the equivalent version to be able to play it. In Opera Developer we have version 59 of chromium. The version of your ffmpeg package is probably 57, so they are not compatible. So Opera Stable is the only channel that fully support h264 videos. Please be aware this is developer channel, and there maybe bugs and issues like that. However, our users have solved this, have a look: https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1882585/h264-problems/p1

          • Томица

Radek honestly you don’t need to keep repeating that same excuse. You guys (Opera) have made it clear that you are not going to do anything about this. But don’t expect that your attitude will make us users just accept it and stop complaining about something that is a pain in our back.

Really, is it a problem that I called it a regression? You don’t agree that this is obviously a regression? While even you call it a bug/issue? If calling it a regression makes any difference, then fine. For me a regression is an issue that did not exist in the previous, and does exist in the current version. But whatever. You obviously consider it a feature, so good for you. You guys must be proud of your job well done.

            > So Opera Stable is the only channel that fully support h264 videos.

Radek can you please confirm this to me? Is this an official stance of Opera? Can you please confirm that Opera will not fix this bug/issue in Opera Developer? This is very important, we should know, to stop waiting and start switching browsers.

            > However, our users have solved this, have a look: https://disq.us/url?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforums.opera.com%2Fdiscussion%2F1882585%2Fh264-problems%2Fp1%3AavBYV4JdC6OX_mxVaeMD2qbz7AY&cuid=2565769

Please don’t call that method a solution. Those tweaks and work-arounds are terrible, they’re only temporary, they break dependancies and automatic updates, and do not solve anything. A work-around is not a solution, even more so when it comes from a community member.

  • Stanislav Stratil

Im not sure about that icon in the low left corner for switching sidebar… it looks like indicator for low battery.

There’s a problem with the sidebar while enabled on Windows 7:

    https://imgur.com/a/HQ4Gv

Upper left corner looks a bit weird, almost broken. The toolbar and sidebar have different heights (first screenshot). Second screenshot is what I’d like, rise the entire toolbar to match the sidebar’s height. This also gives more room while Opera is not maximised. But third screenshot, to lower the sidebar’s height, would also be fine.

(second and third screenshots are edits based on first screenshot)

    • Thanks! So much more work to do 🙂

Why Windows Firewall show a dialog says Opera has been blocked? Any feature need listen on some port? It’s ok to do this, but this dialog jump out after every update….

          • Leonardo Gomes

I remember have seen it happening here a few times too. I’ll check if it happens again in a next update.

And no, I don’t have any different rule on Windows firewall.

          • Ariane Lu

No, Everything is default. And jump out every upgrade, because Opera binary directory include version number and will change after every upgrade

          • Przemek Kudła

The problem is known, but for the first time I see that it happens with the default configuration. Could you share details of your OS? Is it something special for Chineses market?

          • Ariane Lu

No, Everything is same, Just upgrade Windows 10 to Creators Update, but this dialog still jump out. I’m not sure this is a bug of Windows Firewall?
If you can provide detail about what action caused firewall block it, may i can debug with my own code

          • Przemek Kudła

The only known action triggering the firewall warning is what you wrote before. The new update is installed in the new path (new version number).

Did you try cleaning cookies and cache?

          • Optimist_2016

Did that. But still cannot login. I can login from my beta and I can login from the opera homepage, but I cannot login from stable settings.

    Hi Opera Desktop team,

Do you consider adding Google Hangouts to the sidebar? It should be more than useful.. 🙂

    • Kornelia

As for now, we’ve got 3 most popular messengers. We’ll see what future brings 😉

      • graeme

will we be able to add items to the new sidebar with extensions?

  • _artem_

in my opinion that’s what dark theme should look like

Since the creators update, when I select text, it doesn’t pop up Search/Copy; therefore, I have to make right click to use those options. Also it doesn’t show predictions in the adress bar.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It seems to be working here.

    • Ariane Lu

This feature works for me on Windows 10 Creators update. I don’t have any idea about this.

It is very annoying that every time the Lastpass browser extension tries to contact with functions that are viewable only in normal window mode, then browser hangs and restarts! I asked support from them, then Lastpass told that they do not support developer version.

Playing videos fullscreen leves a 1px transparent stripe at the bottom of the screen.

    https://i.imgur.com/dvDVZVd.jpg

Zoom in, at the very bottom of the screen you can see a 2560x1px stripe with the default Windows 7 blue wallpaper. Reproducible on YouTube or with local files. I only tried 1920×1080 video on 2560×1440 screen.

    • DRAKONYUS

Sure, it happens for any fullscreen video. This bug also affects the latest 46.0.2567.0 version.
      Edit: Windows 7 64 bit, Flash 25.0.0.148

Favicons are targeting clear theme. So rainloop.net or github.com look bad on dark theme. No idea how to imporve that, though.

    • Nekomajin43

Maybe a white/light spot under the favicon would help. This is definitely an issue.

  • Mat M

Opera 46 seems to remember previous certificate denials. I moved from Startssl to Let’s encrypt, but Opera still says the connection is insecure (with no more details). Firefox is fine, another site with let’s encrypt cert is also OK.

and when is pined and click for example in messenger or whatsapp the login window appears but you can not hide it even by clicking on the same icon.

  • Marek

Uhm, so how exactly do I make my Opera look like the one in the screenshot, with everything in dark?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Enabling the dark theme?

      • Marek

I do have the dark theme enabled, but on the screenshot the whole upper bar is dark and what I have is the new ugly “native windows 7” look with transparent tab and default windows 7 buttons. So, it looks like this: http://screenshot.sh/oBKbIAuVUIgFc I found Windows 7 aero glass skin option in flags, it makes the bar dark but the closing/minimizing buttons are still the same, not like on the screenshot in the blog.

        • M92

You should deactivate the Aero Skin in about:flags

        • Nekomajin43

What do you expect if you are on win7?

          • Marek

Same as the guy on the screenshot?

          • Nekomajin43

            Which was taken on Win10.

        • Tomatoshadow2

The whole bar is dark by default with dark theme enabled.

          • Marek

            well not for me

          • Tomatoshadow2

Hmm, maybe a thing with Windows 7.

  • WDHellS

as the interface are constructed Dark Mode,
    probably some sort of filter “would had” to tweak the bright colors;
    this way by preserving readability with consistent low bright contents;

Please add emojis support for TouchBar 🙁

    Hi,

for some time, the following question is on my mind:

Why did you implemented (some time ago) a “new” sidebar, when we already had a good one (on the speed dial page)?
Why can’t you take the existing half transparent speed dial sidebar and implement only a button on the address bar to hide/show it or better: to hide/show it when the mouse cursor reaches the left side of Opera screen.

Maybe you can help me understand or take this question/suggestion to make Opera even better than now.

    Thanks

I have problems with cast option and youtube. Using Mac version and trying to cast youtube video to my tv, but it’s not working, shows that cast it (finds my tv), the blue icons is showed but the video runs only on the pc, not loading on my tv. With chrome and other browsers i have no problem!

And something else, in some Joomla! 3.6.5 sites when you try to log in in admin panel you have to fill your username and password twice, cuz after you enter them for first time and click to login, shows you again the login form and after you fill it again and press login button then logged you. Or if you fill ur info the first time click login, showed you again the login form and you close the tab, open it again you’d be logged….

Is there anyway i can add instagram, twitter sidebars?

    • Leonardo Gomes
