Hi,

Today’s beta update brings valuable fixes for recent, annoying issues as well as further improvements and security patches. It’ll be worth updating your browser for these fixes.

The most notable repairs:

  • Smaller installer package
  • Fix for memory leak when watching videos
  • Fixed problem for some pages not rendering when opening in a new tab

Beta was enriched with a security patch to prevent possible phishing with unicode domains (that patch is already included in the latest Opera Developer). Sites with possible malicious intentions are much easier to spot.

    Please update your article about unicode phishing: http://www.opera.com/security/advisory/788. TLD white list was the solution in Opera 12. But do you use it now? Or you simply disabled all punycode URL representations?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s a 12 year old article, I guess it’s no longer valid.

  • cra0zy

    Maximize and unmaximize and bug 🙁 http://imgur.com/a/m7HNN

    • Kornelia

      Is it reproducible every time you try? Win10, right?

      • cra0zy

        It’s Linux, and yes, every single time.

        • Ari

          I’m on Debian 8, MATE desktop. Working fine for me.

  • Vj

    i thought my hardware was dated when i use hardware acceleration on youtube 60fps videos which stutters a lot. i am glad its fixed any chance of this fix being rolled for stable opera

    • Ari

      Dude it has just been pushed into beta

  • Michal

    I haven’t been able to play certain videos in the last few weeks. I just get an error message. It works on Opera Stable, but not on Beta or Developer. Unfortunately, I’m not able to provide with examples as those videos are behind a login page, but I do have a screenshot.

    http://oi66.tinypic.com/23hvmnl.jpg

    For all I know it’s the website that’s the problem, but for me it’s strange that it works on Stable.

    • Could you report this issue through https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/desktop
      When reporting add some contact email so we could get more details from you.
      Also please attach logs from opera://media-internals perhaps that could give us a clue of what’s going on.

      • Michal

        I’ve submitted the bug report (DNAWIZ-14310).

    • Kornelia

      Could you also look at opera://components and let me know what Widevine version is visible there.

      • Michal

        It says version 1.4.8.903.

      • filbo

        For me — not having the original problem, just looking in opera://components out of curiosity: it says “No components are installed”. opera-developer 46.0.2567.0 x86_64 on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS.

        Should widevine be there? Anything else?

        • filbo

          $ locate widevine
          … finds libwidevinecdm.so, libwidevinecdmadapter.so in directories for Chromium, Chrome and Vivaldi; but not Opera. Opera is perhaps trying to feed off of Chrome?

          $ cat /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/resources/widevine_config.json
          [
          {
          “preload” : “/opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdm.so”,
          “plugin” : “/opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdmadapter.so”
          },
          {
          “preload” : “/opt/google/chrome-beta/libwidevinecdm.so”,
          “plugin” : “/opt/google/chrome-beta/libwidevinecdmadapter.so”
          },
          {
          “preload” : “/opt/google/chrome-unstable/libwidevinecdm.so”,
          “plugin” : “/opt/google/chrome-unstable/libwidevinecdmadapter.so”
          }
          ]

          Is it allergic to presence of more than one build track of Chrome?

          • filbo

            Edited down to just:

            [
            {
            “preload” : “/opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdm.so”,
            “plugin” : “/opt/google/chrome/libwidevinecdmadapter.so”
            }
            ]

            and restarted under newly installed opera-developer 46.0.2573.0, still “No components are installed”. (Pointed-to .so files are 1.4.8.977, fwiw).

    can you f..ng fix loading of pokemonshowdown? opera crashes everytime when I click teambuilder [this bug exist since few versions]

    • Andrey

      Crashes?, may be you using opera adblock?

        showdown help thinks that it’s opera problem, but whatever, I got another update and it’s works, they are fast… or maybe it will end up being broken after few days again…

  • novainc

    [BUG] When visiting a website with integrated facebook comments, they aren’t visible if you’ve commented there.

    How to reproduce:
    – Log into your facebook account
    – Go to this site http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/the-future-of-food-meat-alternatives/ and make a comment
    – Now comments won’t be visible either by scrolling to the comments section or by clicking the comments icon to the top left of the page.

    System and browser version: Opera beta 45.0.2552.453, Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2LTS 64-bits

    • Kornelia

      I could see my own comments.

      • novainc

        Odd.. I can see the comments with stable but not with beta. Both with fb account logged in.

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Any different settings? Any extension?

          • novainc

            No. Both clean installations with sync enabled. No extensions.

    • IMO you have problem with engine. Try to restart, but, careful

      • novainc

        How do I do that?

  • Eugene B.

    Is it RC or not yet? 🙂

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Not yet, i think. it’s still early for an stable release.

      • Eugene B.

        The next build will be RC. I’m pretty sure. 🙂

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Well, I’m not so sure about it. 🙂

  • Audio blip when I did the update

  • Andrea Maira

    opera doesn’t work anymore after this update! downloaded again, online and offline installer but still nothing!! the app doesn’t open at all 🙁

  • Marko Koivuniemi

    It happened again – when Opera updater does “something” and find Opera Beta update then my Opera Developer stops working – all tabs open but are blank – I cannot access even settings pages. I must run Opera Developer installer again and then it works. It has happened earlier. I have all three versions of Opera installed – usually my default browser is either Developer or Beta.

  • EJ Rizal

    WTH?? I updated and now it wont even open. I reinstalled twice now, and nothing still…

    • Kornelia

      What’s your operating system?

    • Wait wait a minut, you reinstalled? I recommend you to improve engine connection according to basic software probability variable. Try this

    • Andrea Maira

      after 1 day ..is working again! like all of the sudden the browser window popped out! but i lost all the password stored etc etc. 🙁

  • I noticed bug, really hard one. Where is jira? Where to input? I can report this stuff according to flow, waiting for access.

    • @xenon16k:disqus ???

      • You can file bugs here: https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/desktop

        • all engines? I find many engines. Thanks for fast response

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Opera’s engine is Blink or whatever engine Chromium uses. There aren’t that many engines to be found.

          • Ari

            Engines??? wtf, reading through your comments here seems you are on drugs or something or you have some fetish with engines

    • Leonardo Gomes

      And that bug would be….?

  • schnullifax

    I noticed an annoying bug in Opera 45.0.2552.453 beta (32-bit) on Windows 7 64-bit (WoW64) – disabling Opera wallpapers doesn’t work for me. I attempted to disable it via browser settings and the settings button on the speed dial page. Clean installation in a virtual machine (no previous Opera beta versions installed, never updated).

  • A. R.

    Some extensions, like Atavi bookmarks doesn’t work with Opera’s VPN/private mode. It’s been like that for long. Didn’t work on Beta stream – and I haven’t mastered to get it going on Stable either.

    I’m thinking going back to Beta stream however, but I’m worried that Beta is still high on RAM&CPU compared to the vast memory pruning betterness of Stable.

    Then again the facelift will soon hit Stable – but those extensions! Should get Chrome extensions instead? AND _that_ 3rd party middleman to get Chrome Shop to use <_< hmmm

    • Ari

      Have you tested the memory consumption on both? I haven’t seen any difference since like O39. Apart from the bugs that appear on beta.

  • A. R.

    BTW, how is x64 version (Win) Stable/Beta these days?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      They are fine.

      • A. R.

        Any downsides using x64? Or upsides apart RAM?

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Nope and there shouldn’t be any.

        • Ari

          Unless you are using dozens and dozens of tabs, then not worth it, use x86 one.

  • My portable install of Opera no longer opens. Neither launcher.exe nor the opera.exe files in either version folder appear to do anything; if they open at all, they’re exiting immediately. I’m using Windows 10.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Did you try a restart?

      • I installed a second instance and moved my profile folder over, and now it works.

  • With this build [I cannot say if previous ones worked] I am unable to register/sign in with Instagram. I hit the ‘Log in with Facebook’ button and then geht a forever spinning wait page. It works with Firefox or the Instagram apps [Android, W10].

    • Ari

      Have you tried in a private window? For discarding cookies/cache issues.

      • Despite the facts that a private window for logging into Instagram with OAuth provided by Facebook doesn’t make sense in the long run, yes, I tried it. Same problem, only slightly amended by the fact that this time I obviously got the FB login page, put in my credentials – and only then got the endlessly spinning wheel from Instagram.

  • Nice update, thanks. One thing i will forever respect opera for is that they always keep their products updated. One thing all tech companies should learn from them.

  • R v

    Any ETA for the final version?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Based on the regular pattern, I would guess sometime in May.

  • xirit64

    That Aero fulllscreen glass effect when starting the browser is extremely annoying, please remove it.

  • Ari

    Hmmm am I the only one that Flash player is not being detected by Opera?

    I’m on W8.1Prox64. Flash player PPAPI 25.0.0.148 is installed.

    • Ari

      Well weird…I downloaded the standalone version and flash is working…. :/

      • Ari

        OK, I have reset to default all flags and it started working… I had like a dozen flags modified, I wonder which one was it :S

        • Leonardo Gomes

          ‘Prefer HTML over! Flash’?

          • Ari

            Yeah, I have never seen that one before until after just resetting everything to default and have gone through aallll of them again to see which one I would like to change. Just found out that are several new ones about flash, I’ve never seen those before.

          • Leonardo Gomes

            And how do you managed to enable it without knowing it? 🙂

          • Ari

            The plugin started working after I did a Reset to default. After testing that was working, I went through all the flags (after months ago) to turn on the one that I wanted again, like override software rendering list, disable news feed, etc. While I was going through the list I saw the one you said, and also this one Run all Flash content when Flash setting is set to “allow”, for first time in my life, so I don’t know when they appeared as a new flag on Opera, and obviously never changed them.

            My mistake was that before resetting to default, I should have gone through each flag I changed months ago, default it and reboot each time, to debug which one was the messy one.

  • redfox

    Will there be an option to switch to the old UI after O45 reaches Stable?
    You should turn on the Reborn interface only for Win 10 (Linux, maybe MAC) users, the others don’t like it (ugly tabs, folder icons..). Thx.

  • Junaid Ahmed

    Since the reborn update “Show system color on top bar” doesn’t work. Reported every-time with no response from any devs. Don’t know why.:-@

  • Bat

    Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve the memory issue completely. It’s better, but not as good like before the 45 version – it still uses much more memory than before and videos go black or green.
    I’m still talking about more than 100 opened tabs, I don’t know if you (Opera team) really do some “heavy” testing and use Opera everyday.
    I hope you have some PC users, who use Opera everyday, because that’s the only way to properly test a product. For instance, Google Maps developers don’t use this navigation everyday – it’s just what they do for living, that’s why there are so many bugs and counter-intuitive features.

    Back to Opera:
    My machine: i7, 16 GB RAM, Samsung 850 Pro SSD (the fastest SATA SSD) with 40 GB page file (increased it because of Opera). Windows 8.1.
    Opera still eats the whole 16 GB of RAM and then it’s unusable, despite having additional memory from page file available (committed memory is only ~17 / 60 GB). Before Opera 45 it was never that high and everything was stable.

    What’s even funnier – you had a stable and great product, and messed up everything, by just updating the overall layout/design and adding some useless sidebar stuff. The first thing everybody does is turn this off.

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera beta 45.0.2552.626 😉

  • BF Collider

    I read about this bug or what you would call it, and it is really good to see you guys fixing it. 🙂
