Hi,

Today, we’ve prepared an update on the beta stream due to important fixes for the out of memory bug, which Maciek mentioned on Friday’s blog post.

Also, Windows users will find that the non-playable video issue is solved. This should not cause any more troubles for YouTube lovers.

Chromium has been updated to version 58.0.3029.41.

All the details are listed in the changelog, as usual.

Nice Opera 45.0.2552.225 beta bugfix update, especially the default enabling of opera://flags/#media-windows-mf-demuxer. Thanks !

  • Vikruntasas

    YaY! VPN bug fixed..again ^^

    2 suggestions:

When adding new TOP sites they should appear to the right of the most recent site, not to the left, if you know what I mean. They appear at the the top left and then the user has to drag them where s/he wants. Instead they should keep appearing to the bottom right in a row.

You should add a lock TOP sites option. So the tiles cannot be moved on accident.

“Show system color on the top bar” doesn’t work just like the previous beta version. Please fix it. Off-white top bar is almost identical to white web page and it creates distraction. It’s also uncomfortable on eyes.

    • Vikruntasas

Where do you see the option to show system color?

      • Junaid Ahmed

        Settings>>Browser>>User interface

    • In my case, show system color doesn’t work at all.

      • Junaid Ahmed

Same. I’ve posted about this bug on previous post about Opera beta. Again posted on this post. Still not getting any response..

There’s some major issue with address bar on macOS: https://imgni.com/i/0LJu .

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Hi Buthimild,
Thank you for catching this! We will fix that.

    • Kornelia

Hi, did you observe this issue only using dark theme? Could you try the same using clean installation and let me know if it’s still there?
EDIT: OK, got it. You need to have ‘Reduce transparency’ enabled is System preferences. I’ll report this issue. Thanks.

      • Buthimild

That’s correct. It appears only when using dark theme with “Reduce transparency” option enabled.

  • Kevin J K

Still cannot login to 53.com with this browser. Works fine on Opera stable.

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Hi Kevin,

What is the message you get at the login attempt?

      • Kevin J K

It flashes a message that disappears too quickly to see and then goes to a logoff page. I might have seen the word “unexpected” but its just too quick.

I captured the packets but most are all ssl that I cannot make out although I do see some packets with data containing the words Verisign and Symantec.

        Certificate issue?

        • Przemek Kudła

Did you try to disable the adblocker?

          • Kevin J K

            Yes no adblocker.
I just completely uninstalled opera beta including all the appdata and ran ccleaner until no registry errors. I made sure the appdata was completely gone. Then with a fresh install with all the default settings the issue still exists.

      • Kevin J K

Was able to get a copy of the screen with the message but it is not going to be much help. It flashes a window that says “UNEXPECTED_ERROR”.

    • Kevin J K

I just installed Opera Developer and 53.com works fine with it. Hmmmm.

  • ilMike_42

Please, PLEASE let me choose what to assign to the search engines shortcuts. When I press ‘y’ I want YouTube, not Yahoo 🙁

    • ratamies

Yahoo paid to be default search engine with easy shortcut ‘y’. As a bonus malware is not able to change default search engines, so it provides additional security for inexperienced users. Unfortunately all this means that Opera will not allow to edit default engines shortcuts.

    • thatism3

      1. Open opera:about, copy the path to the profile (Paths > Profile), and make a note of the path to the installation root (Paths > Install), close the browser,
      2. Open your file explorer, navigate to installationroot operaversion resources subfolder (eg. installationroot 45.0.2552.225 resources), and make a copy of the default_partner_content.json (eg. default_partner_content.json-org),
      3. Overwrite the default_partner_content.json with the ab_tests.json, copy the default_partner_content.json to the profile folder (overwrite existing file), and make it read-only.
Relaunch the browser, right-click on the address bar, select “Edit search engines…”, and you should see, that all default search engines are gone, except Google, which is hard-coded in the executable file.

By the way, why is blog still defaulting to http?

Need help fixing a crash found on play.pokemonshowdown.com/teambuilder. Every time I click the List button on the site, Opera instantly crashes. This also occurs when the browser attempts to load the domain and from the redirection in the teambuilder button on the main domain play.pokemonshowdown.com as well. Clearing cookies on the site helped the issue for visiting the site, but Opera crashes once again when I leave the page through the site and try to revisit the teambuilder url. I never had any problems before this update and humbly ask for a solution.

  • John

I am using Opera 45.0.2552.225 on Windows 10 x64. I am curious if there is a way to make the Bookmarks Bar 2 lines instead of just one, I have scoured the forums and gone through the settings but cannot seem to find a way to modify it. Any suggestions or is it just not possible. I understand there used to be a “wrapper” feature that would allow you to do this back on like version 10 or 12.

    • BK

Hi, this is not planned for now. Folders do don’t do the job for you?
What screen size do you have?

  • redfox

Will the VPN memory leak fix be applied also to O44 Stable? I’d like to have at least one working Opera version without the Reborn GUI. Thanks.

    • Ari

You can hide the sidebar panel, everything else is the same as before…

      • redfox

I thought the 45 has the Reborn look…

    • BK

      Planned today 🙂

  • Ari

Aren’t you guys using PGO anymore? I ask because it doesn’t show on about page.
    W8.1×64-O45betax86

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Hi Ari,
As per routine we keep releasing PGO builds, However this time we made an exception 🙂

      • Ari

        Good to know 🙂

  • qwerzaq

The selected text in the links is very inconvenient at the moment
After I select the text, I only need to drag the selected text up or down. If I mix in the right or left I’ll pull the selected text, it selects another and does not pull the old one. In Opera 12, it was much more convenient to do this

  • jho

Do you plan to make the color of the bookmarks bar adjustable? This blue is really eye hurting. The grey color was perfect. And why blue? Is it chromium default? Why not Opera red? 😉

I just needed to start Opera Stable and realised that the overall grey ui color is not grey anymore but greyblueish. I would prefer to have the old grey back. It has a neutral tone and was fitting very good. Maybe to could add it as another theme? Also with grey bookmar bar icons.

  • jho

Disquas log in window does not remember password. Actually it never did for me. It is quite disgusting. 😉

  • leo1

Hi! Is there a recent opera version for Windows XP 32 bit? Only 36.0.2130.80 version is available by installer.

    • Andrey

      > Only 36.0.2130.80 version is available by installer.
      36.x – last version for XP/Vista.
Security update for Windows XP and Vista users – Opera Desktop
      https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2016/08/security-update-windows-xp-vista-users/

      • leo1

No built-in VPN and adblocking so far…

        • Bat

And there won’t be any, like Andrey said, 36.x is the last version. Adblocking and built-in VPN was introduced later.

Opera for Windows XP receives security updates only. This system is no longer supported by Microsoft, that’s why no one cares.

I use IE11 as a backup browser, where Opera is having problems or sometimes for printing when FF won’t do. I discovered tonight, confirmed by an MS rep, that it’s impossible to add extensions to IE11 when Opera is the default browser. What happens is that the “Find more toolbars and extensions” link opens an Opera page instead of staying in IE. One has to switch the default temporarily to IE and then switch back. Are you aware of that? I thought those games, at least at that level, were over with.

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera beta 45.0.2552.453 😉

    • Bat

Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve the memory issue completely. It’s better, but not as good like before the 45 version – it still uses much more memory than before and videos go black or green.
I’m still talking about more than 100 opened tabs, I don’t know if you (Opera team) really do some “heavy” testing and use Opera everyday.
I hope you have some PC users, who use Opera everyday, because that’s the only way to properly test a product. For instance, Google Maps developers don’t use this navigation everyday – it’s just what they do for living, that’s why there are so many bugs and counter-intuitive features.

      Back to Opera:
My machine: i7, 16 GB RAM, Samsung 850 Pro SSD (the fastest SATA SSD) with 40 GB page file (increased it because of Opera). Windows 8.1.
Opera still eats the whole 16 GB of RAM and then it’s unusable, despite having additional memory from page file available (committed memory is only ~17 / 60 GB). Before Opera 45 it was never that high and everything was stable.

  • Bat

What’s funny – the two major bugs you claim are fixed in this release, are actually still there 🙂

What’s even funnier – you had a stable and great product, and messed up everything, by just updating the overall layout/design and adding some useless sidebar stuff. The first thing everybody does is turn this off.
