This year, we celebrate 20 years of making a browser. 2016 has been a big year for Opera, one in which we have been able to make the browser a lot better. There is no better way to complete such an amazing year than bringing you a new version with a very special number. Opera 42 debuts today with some new gifts.

Built-in currency converter

Opera is now the first of the major browsers to add a built-in currency converter. It makes it easy to check what items cost, and is ready to improve the way people shop online.
Currency converter

Cross-border e-commerce is booming all around the world. According to research, within four years, 45% of online shoppers worldwide will purchase products from foreign online stores. There are many countries, in which more than 50% of people do it already.

With these trends, the use of online currency converters has become one of the most common needs – and greatest sources of frustration – when looking for products, as until now, no other browser has offered a built-in currency converter. Today, Opera becomes the first to offer this smart solution.

To use the currency converter, simply select the price you want to convert on the page and Opera will automatically show it in your local currency. You can also change your output currency in the browser settings. Opera 42 supports conversion in 32 currencies based on daily values from the European Central Bank.

Even smarter and faster startup

Opera’s faster startup mechanism works even better in Opera 42. We now take into account which tabs were most recently used before you quit Opera, instead of relying on the order of tabs to determine which ones to load on startup.

Easy to add news feeds from websites

Opera’s personal newsreader has been given a fresh, new look and now offers an easier way to discover feeds. If a page publishes a web feed, a little newspaper icon will appear in the address bar. Simply click it and then select one to open. If you find it interesting, you can always add it to your existing sources. We want to keep the address bar as clean as possible, so this feature is disabled by default. To enable it, go to Settings (Preferences) > Browser > Personal news > Show available news feeds on address bar and check the checkbox.
Personal News

Once you have your favorite sources configured, you can get a notification whenever new content is published. A blue dot will appear over the newspaper icon to let you know.

The network installer for Opera 64-bit

Update: For some Windows 10 users the conversion process of 32 to 64-bits has led to removing Opera from the list of available browsers to set as system default. In order to fix this issue we temporarily stopped serving 64-bits for Windows till the proper fix is provided.

The new version comes with the network installer for 64-bit builds, which installs the best option for you. In other words, it detects the architecture it’s run on and installs either Opera 64-bit or Opera 32-bit. Moreover, it’s able to upgrade (not to be confused with auto-update) from 32-bit to 64-bit. After the upgrade, the 32-bit version is removed from the system. Don’t worry, it will keep your profile, so you won’t lose any data, and the transition is smooth – you may not even notice it. For those who don’t like it, we left an option to prevent this change.

We have checked the difference in the memory usage for Opera x64 vs. Opera x86 (32-bit).

64bittest

The resolution 1920 x 1080 was used for this test, with maximized window, no extensions and 10 open tabs.*

Download Opera 42 and let us know what you think about the new features and the progress we made this year.

    i updated just!

  • Daivy Merlijs

Why don’t Opera update to 64 bits ? The 42 version has finally 64 bits…

    • Robert Tomaszewski

We update to x64 if installed from the network installer only. I.e. once you try updating from opera:about it will still keep the architecture as so far.

  • Bali505

    Congratulations Opera!!

/Now speedily grabbing my update 🙂

  • L33t4opera

Hi Krystian, congrats on the 20th anniversary, and also congrats to the Developers due to the release of Opera 42! 😉

  • RussianNeuroMancer

Please fix touchscreen support on Linux, it’s still impossible to select few words with touchscreen :-/
Also Opera still not utilize hardware video decoder while patches to get it working is available in DNAWIZ-8343.

  • LoverOfLife

Where is this setting ? “Show available news feeds on adress bar”

    • ratamies

There is “Search settings” field at the top of the settings page. No need to remember exact location of the check box.

      • LoverOfLife

        Thanks, i found it already

  • SebBot

Hey. First off great job on the new update! Really love the currency conversion feature.
However, I would like to point out to you that the error detailed in this thread:
    http://forums.opera.com/discussion/comment/15253046
(Opera crashing on Settings Page due to BEX Problem)
still remains unresolved. I hope you’ll fix this in the next release, at the very least. This really is a major inconvenience.

  • firuz_u7

Opera is not available in the default list of programs after installation on x64 x86 replacement
    windows 10 x64

    • Robert Tomaszewski

I tried to reproduce this on Win10 x64 testing an upgrade from Opera 40 (x86) as well as Opera 41 (x86) to Opera 42 (x64) and I was not able to reproduce this problem. However we will keep an eye on this.

      • Azgrel

I had the same problem as firuz_u7. Removing Opera and reinstalling it fixed the issue.

        • firuz_u7

          confirmed it working after reinstallation

    • Jens

In Arch Linux Opera is too stupid to set as default browser (instead of Mozilla Firefox).

  • Hetai-Na

Scroll in youtube.com to see video comments is very lagged.

  • Eugene Galonsky

Available news feeds on address bar icon is cropped on retina screen. (Yoga 900)

  • Kalo

Again, the new startup mechanism is great an all but I would appreciate a option to not load the background tabs at all unless I switch to it. That would be helpful for me.

    • ratamies

Looks like setting “Delay loading of background tabs” does this. It is available when “Show advanced settings” check box is turned on.

      • Kalo

I have this setting on and the background tabs are still being loaded. You can tell by looking at the tabs and the icons. It says delay and not “dont load background tabs” so the more recent ones are being loaded first.

  • nanana1

Giving this Opera 42 a miss because files downloaded with it carry the “Unblock” security nag :((

  • Paweł

Small changes, and enjoy;) The huge plus for the Opera House, the x64 version.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

I have stange interface gliches in Opera: tickets on checkboxes, crosses on close buttons, blinking texts, e.t.c. in Settings page is missing + random browser crashes when deleting bookmark via context menu in a folder on bookmarks bar + some web-pages elements also missing even with adblock disabled. I reinstalled browser with deleting user data, but with no effect and user data deleted partially.

But I am here for another question: is DNAWIZ-5170 ever considered? Because I sent it a long time ago, but no changes in browser since submitting.

  • the conversion is not working on tokopedia.com

    • Works for me. Tried it on https://www.tokopedia.com/sun-outlet/celana-dalam-anak-cewe-katun?src=topads, and selecting ‘Rp 50.000’ showed currency converted.

      • it doesn’t on my side, I’m using opera for linux. Not sure why

Version: 42.0.2393.85 – Opera is up to date
        Update stream: Stable
System: Linux Mint 18 (x86_64; XFCE)

      • Vux777

on your example page I see popup with currency converter (there was a problems first couple of times, simply didn’t work)

        …but, conversion is wrong
        it should be HRK 26,78
        http://prnt.sc/djo3fl

        • Right, didn’t really pay attention to this. Reported this as DNA-58477 seems like currency converter doesn’t recognise correctly decimal mark for specific currencies.

  • ShintoPlasm

Just wondering, how is this currency conversion lookup implemented? Is there any tracking involved (e.g. sending my current URL to ‘phone home’), or are currency rates updated independently into an internal local database inside the browser environment?

    • Bartosz Wiklak

Opera downloads rates on regular manner and cashes them. No (personal) data is sent when user selects text.

      • ShintoPlasm

Thank you very much for clarifying.

  • SteUeRunG

    Is this a known issue?
Some videos have sound problems (much lower speed) like on
    http://www.welt.de/videos
    http://www.oe24.at/tv

On Chrome there are no problems. Problem does exist at least since Opera 41 but dont know for sure because I’m not often on that websites.

    • Юлия

No problems here on Windows 7 with FireFox x64 and Opera Dev x64. Do you have Flash installed? Maybe that’s the culprit.

      • SteUeRunG

I have Flash installed but deactivating it in Opera makes no difference. Edge, Chrome and FF don’t have this issue on my system.
I guess this sound problem has something to do with the player used by this sites. Both have the same (JWplayer).

    • Leonardo Gomes

I can confirm the problem with ‘slow speed’ audio in Opera 42. In Opera Developer 43 it seems to be working fine.

  • ktxgio

Thanks for new release! in use from yesterday 😀

  • Piotr Mika

    Hi,
i’d love the option of having different zoom sizes for start page and other “opera system” pages.

I use quite a small start page zoom (50%), cause thanks to bookmark images I can easily see which tile is for. However the same zoom is set automatically for history page, so every time I go there, I need to manually zoom to 90/100% to read anything.
Would it be possible that zoom set for start page worked only for start page, the one set for history window worked only for it etc?

  • tafugate

hard to believe. it hasn’t been 20 years for me i guess, i downloaded 4.something and have been using opera ever since. i miss netscape, but opera has filled the void. thanks. (8

  • Pierre771

Hello and thanks a lot for this version
I executed the installer. It passed it to 64 bits but it remained in program files (x86)
My Opera developer is in program files (‘programmes’ in French).

  • Pierre771

It’s OK uninstalling it, deleting the folder ‘Opera’ in program files (x86) and re-installing it

  • Leonardo Gomes

I’m getting old, I’ve been using Opera since version 3.5x I guess.

    • BK

That’s what you call “a core userbase” 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

And the core userbase remember the good times when they had a confirm exit feature. 😉

        • Ari

          Only picky ones.

        • senja1

Confirm exit is totally unnecessary. When I go to exit, i want to exit. But I hate Chrome (and others) feature where it exits whole browser when you exit last tab.

          • Nekomajin43

Let’s say it is unnecessary for you. But you clearly don’t understand the problem.

  • Don’t forget the :towel:

Been using Opera since around version 9.2x (I still have some of the Opera 9.5 “Opera next wallpapers”)

  • Just an FYI, My News Sources are still not being synced. Don’t know how to fix this.

  • oic

I’m using 32 bit opera browser. I’m constantly running out of memory because I have lots of youtube tabs open. Will 64 bit help?

    • Robert Tomaszewski

Yes, it should help as 64-bit process can allocate more memory. But keep in mind please that it still can be run out 🙂

    • Ari

How do you realise that Opera is running out of memory?

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, would it be possible to expose the RSS detection as an extension API? A few usecases:
    – Use pageAction to change the address bar icon (I know, I know…)
    – Display notification as a notification or a browserAction badge
    – Display the feeds in a sidebar panel

    • Hi, we haven’t thought about it yet 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

        Yet? 🙂

Btw, can you place the RSS settings to the reader too? Like the BM bar switch in the BM manager.

        • Product is never ready. It’s just shipped 🙂

  • iPristy

It works great, nothing to complain for my slow system.
    Linux Mate 18 32bit

  • verter

I can’t connect to the Internet after update :/

  • firuz_u7

sidebar in the speed dial you remove one element for example tab reloads the browser, and it is there but again checked on the retraction has been removed

  • Spideymang

Nice update!!! thank you Opera team!!!

  • tkapler

Funny is, that you are showing it on Aliexpress, where they got text selection blocker script, so unless you install e.g. “allow copy” extension, you cannot select the text so also see the price

    • Ari

I can select text normally on AliExpress

      • tkapler

Strange – it does not work here on any computer. Maybe it does not work with touch enabled windows devices (they got some other problems with them) as we have, or it differs by country.

    • Herr Pietrus

“I can select text normally on AliExpress”
It works for me too. 🙂

    • Roland Dombi

it’s working for me. no problems here

  • Alexx_B

    Thanks for the update

    Two questions:
    1) it looks like that currency converter doesn’t work for me. Is it country/region related? Or, maybe, I should enable that feature somehow? I’ve just tried to convert the prices on eBay and Aliexpress

    2) My OS is Win10 x64, but Opera is still x86. Should I download the standalone installer (not the built-in upgrade) to achieve the x64?

    • Alexx_B

In addition to #1. I’ve opened the ebay item and I see the two prices: original (US dollars) and approximately price for my region (roubles)
When I select the US price – I’ve got nothing. But roubles conversion works!

      • Bartosz Wiklak

Currency converter only works for certain countries with supported currencies (see https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/exchange/eurofxref/html/index.en.html)
If you are e.g. in Ukraine, converter is not supported at the moment, but you can set different currency in settings “User interface”->”On text selection convert currency to” to supported currency and it will work.

        • Alexx_B

          Thanks for your reply!
Both RUR and USD are in the list. But I can convert RUR to USD, but not USD to RUR.
But thanks, I will try the setting that you advise.

Can you, please, suggest me something about my second question too? (x86 / x64).

          • Bartosz Wiklak

            1) Can you please give us an example where conversion does not work (url and string you’re selecting)?
            2) We’re having some problems with Win10 upgrate from x32 to x64 (becouse of how Windows treats default browsers). We’ve stopped upgrading yesterday and we’ll provide x64 full installer. Please wait for official blog spot.

        • Vladimir

          UAH!

          • Bartosz Wiklak

Yep 🙂 Ukraine is very important country for us, it’s just that the first rates source we’ve found to evaluate the idea doesn’t have UAH. As soon as we’ll find new sources, new currencies shall be supported.

  • tkapler

One more idea – unit converter – i hate all those american stupid non-SI nonsense units like pounds, miles, ounces etc. – you could convert them to SI units (meters, kg …) – it would be super helpful.

    • Herr Pietrus

      It would be GREAT!
      What a fantastic idea!
Everyone who lives in Europe (in EUROPE, not in UK! :P) will agree with us!

      Guys, please, do it 🙂

    • Nekomajin43

      +1

      Make it happen!

  • linkinmedo

I was so excited then I’ve noticed there is no Jordanian Dinar 🙁

  • firuz_u7

Opera x64 Bookmarks can not add a screen shot of the page, or other images
2 is only a picture and everything

    • Herr Pietrus

Confirm – no page thumbnails to choose. But for this page I’ve got a few images suggested, not only two. Still – not the whole page thumbnail.
      Urgent fix needed!

      • firuz_u7

I hope soon to fix it

  • drodz

Oh the new version crashes for me 🙁 It runs for about half a minute, then restarts. I use amd64 version on Linux Mint 17.3. I’ve fresh installed beta (42) and developer (43) and there was the same issue. I found opera profile files in ~/.config and deleted them but it didn’t help, so I think it’s not a browser profile related issue. Anyone else got similiar problem?

I had to downgrade to v. 41, and I ran into a big inconvenience. Older versions aren’t linked anywhere.
    http://www.opera.com/download/guide/?custom=yes <- it doesn't work
http://arc.opera.com/pub/opera/ <- this is what your help page (http://help.opera.com/opera/Linux/2308/pl/solutions.html#oldVersions) links to
    – Opera repository – has only the newest versions
http://get.opera.com/pub/opera/ <- this is what I was looking for. I have no idea how I got there :-))

    • jp

Same issue here (Ubuntu 16.04). Nothing work (not even delete config and start from scratch) so thanks for the link, downgrade is the only workaround.

      So, please, fix this!!

      • anab

Same issue on Ubuntu 12.04. I also reported this long ago, bug DNAWIZ-8421, but till now no progress. Version 41 is fine. Please fix this…

  • And where is the offline Windows x64 installer?.

  • senja1

When upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, shortcuts disappear. I downloaded 64-bit offline version, and there are no options for creating shortcuts. I know that i can create shortcuts manually, but you should have that options in installer.

One more thing. 64-bit version installed in same folder as Opera 12 (64-bit also). I don’t know if there will be problems with it.

And, this currency converter not working for me. You mentioned settings for output currency, but i couldn’t find it.

    • BrianJ

If you uninstall Opera without removing profile data, and then reinstall it, it will be put in Program Files rather than Program Files (x86). This is Windows default behavior and architecture detection and has nothing to with Opera. It does not install in a new location if it’s currently installed, thus uninstalling and then reinstalling should put it in a new folder 🙂

      • senja1

It is already in Program Files (not x86) after upgrade from 32-bit. But there was already been installed Opera 12 (64-bit) in same folder. But I think that is not problem. But I don’t know why deleted shortcuts from taskbar and start menu. And in installer there is no options for creating shortcuts. That options are always been there before.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Opera Blink has always been installed on the same folder as Opera Presto if this one were installed using default settings.

And I never saw a option to create shortcuts in Opera Blink’s installer. At least on the Windows one.

  • Jens

Auto-fill does not work so reliably and well like in Chromium/Chrome. The ZIP code and e-mail address is not always filled in.
The address could also contain specific fields for street name and house number (instead of using a new line after the street name for the number).
    * example: https://www.test.de/microsites/adventskalender/teilnehmen.htm?siteid=adventskalender_gewinnspiel_2016

  • On Windows the relaunch to update button shows about 2 minutes before the update is ready to install, resulting in a failed update (nothing happens)

    Seen on Win 7, 8.1, 10

    • Anekamovie365

same case with my laptop asus win 10

  • iYuzver

This is the most useless version of Opera. Currency Converter is such a necessary thing…..

    Please do it:

    Synchronization Extensions.
    Native translate in Chrome.
    Recently closed tabs 50+.
    Disable display open tabs.
Need a South Korea, China and Japan VPN!
Management of downloading from a context menu: http://funkyimg.com/i/2jpGc.jpg

    • Nekomajin43

While I agree with these features, the currency converter is quite handy. It is a nice addition.

    • Joe438

I think currency converter is an important addition as well, however, I am most excited about the improvements made to the feed reader.

  • Opera 42 x64 can not be set to default on W10, it’s not detected, why ?

    • Roland Dombi

      same here

      • Same problem, very bad news

    • firuz_u7

the same problem has been earned after uninstalling and reinstalling

  • Joe438

Thank you for the new release and congratulations on Making it to the 20th year of Opera! I like the currency converter and am most excited about the improvements made to the feed reader 🙂

I am looking forward to seeing http://www.opera.com/docs/history/ updated with version 42 information. I find the version history page a good reference tool.

My personal wishlist for Opera includes adding the option to remove the ‘x’ from tabs as the middle click works just fine for closing tabs and it makes it difficult to accidentally close tabs similar to the change that was made to the speed dial page.

I would like the option to disable gif animations. gifs are like videos without sound that you can’t pause.

I still fee like the feed reader could do with more visual improvements such as a slimmer list view. If I zoom in or out on the Personal News page I also lose my zoom setting for the speed dial page. It would be nice to keep the zoom settings for those two pages separate.

I would like to be able to see which items have been read and which are new and to be able to remove certain entries (preferably to a trash where they can be undeleted if necessary) as well as to be able to mark items as “read” or “unread”.

Again, I really like the improvements made to the News Feed.

  • red5goahead

    Thanks

    The news reeader is awesome.

We need exception for the vpn because some sites must be reach by corporate connection

  • Павел Реш

Return all bookmarks, on the panel of bookmarks!!!! Opera was the best brauser with organazing bookmarks, but it’s brouken. 🙁

    • Leonardo Gomes

What is the problem with bookmarks?

      • Herr Pietrus

You have to install neater bookmarks extension to launch them from the “main screen”, not from the bookmark manager (great for launching bookmarks recognized by thumbnails/pictures or for big groups of them, but not for single pages…) – do you think that I open bookmark manager to launch one website (which isn’t so important to put it in the speed dial)? Of course I don’t

        😉

I don’t know what’s wrong, there is quite nice side panel extension https://addons.opera.com/pl/extensions/details/bookmarks-by-the-side/?display=pl but side panel don’t have an active edge to open ad hide it.

  • iG0Lka

whether you can do it – you highlight the text is a link, and clicking on it the wheel to open it in a background tab?
Now, to open the link in a text (which Opera does not recognize as a link), you need to select the text is a link, then open the context menu by pressing the right mouse button. Then, hold down the Ctrl key and select “Go to web address”
    example: https://habrastorage.org/files/cea/1db/f59/cea1dbf595334581a11e9e74278800c7.jpg

  • verter

Opera changed location of exe files so my firewall rules became invalid. Why with every update Opera is changing location of exe files?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Because the old ones aren’t overwritten. Instead, a new folder with the new build files is installed and the launcher starts pointing to it.

      • verter

Why? No other browser does it.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Don’t know but it as been working this way in the last three years.

And what about giving access to launcher.exe? Doesn’t it work?

          • verter

But the ones connecting to the Internet are opera.exe and opera_updater.exe…

          • Leonardo Gomes

Right, but launcher.exe is the one that triggers them. Or, at least, opera.exe.

    • Cryio

“Opera changed location of exe files”

I assume because they changed the exe from x86 to x64.

    • dick_c

Personally, I want my firewall to block any new exe file. Just because it has the same name doesn’t mean it’s your same old friend.

      • verter

I want Opera to keep one exe file – not make new with every upgrade and put it in a new folder. Because with every minor update I have to make new firewall rules. And if some virus with same name appear I will grant it all access.

  • Loysek

    Is it just me?

    – when Opera is open for a longer period of time, closing it causes a slight delay (after pressing “X” it takes about a second for it to close)

    – on every launch and closing of Opera there is a “working in background” cursor present (I guess it was always present on launch but never when closing – this is just an observation and I don’t mind it but it may be correlated with the above issue of closing delay?)

    – YouTube seems a bit slower

Above anomalies were not present in previous version (41).
Currency converter is nice addition and works like a charm.

    • Kai Ockendorf

I have the same problem! Pressing “X” & this “working in background” cursur…drives me nuts 🙁 W10x64, O42x64

      • Loysek

Does your Opera sometimes closes slow (1-2 seconds)?

        • Kai Ockendorf

Not anymore! But I had this. I uninstalled Opera Beta & Dev (incl. data), Stable closes immediately now, but this damn “working in background” circle is still there after closing!! Hope they can fix it soon 🙂

          • Loysek

Hmm, never had either Beta or Dev installed – I will try fresh install on a new machine.

I do believe that the “working in background” cursor has to be connected with this new “smarter and faster startup” but yeah it is quite annoying.

          • Kai Ockendorf

It’s really annoying indeed!! Please share your experience after you’ve installed it on a new machine. But I guess this “loading circle” will still be there…

    * Default Title Bar color for normal browsing should be the color currently used for VPN browsing (darker gray on Windows 10). Beautiful look. Perhaps you could use an icon to identify private browsing instead of a change in title bar color.

Just a few thoughts…keep up the good work.

I can’t recommend Opera to any less advanced computer user (and they seem to be your target after abandoning old Opera values) because Opera changes location of exe files with every update so firewall rules became invalid.

    • Przemek Kudła

What kind of firewall software they use? Any specific configuration?

      • verter

Comodo Firewall with custom rules. But the problem is in Opera – it changes location of exe files with every update. When will be this fixed?

        • Przemek Kudła

We know about the problem with a custom configuration, but I’m not able to give any ETA for the fix. We verified that Comodo with the default configuration works fine.

          • verter

On every computer I set up I use custom rules. It would be nice if Opera kept it’s exe files in one location. I would like to install Opera as default browser for others – but untill it’s not fixed, I can’t.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Opera’s executable should be launcher.exe, which is always in the same place.

          • verter

no, it’s opera.exe and opera_updater.exe – and with every minor update name of the folder they are in changes

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, I can start Opera by clicking on launcher.exe and also my shortcuts point to it.

Auto-updater would really may be an issue.

    • Sebastian Borys

      Hello @disqus_8NeKzmvTux:disqus
I have checked update process against several different firewall apps on Windows 7 and in case when firewalls have default settings, without any extra rules there was no problem with update.
Indeed in case when it was set a specific rule for Opera, after update (when path to exe file was changed) firewall app asked me whether I accept to run Opera, but it happens only once after each update. When you accept once, firewall app creates new rule for Opera and it works fine.
Could you tell me what operating system and what firewall app do you use?

  • postdante

Still no dark theme… Wait for the moment when Vivaldi introduces their sync service and see what happens with the Opera user base.

    • Nekomajin43

      Nothing will happen.

    • Leonardo Gomes

They seem to aim a different public, so I guess one will not have a huge impact on the other userbase.

I used the auto-updated from within Opera. The browser is still x86. Do I need to do something to change it to x64?

    • Leonardo Gomes

“Update: For some Windows 10 users the conversion process of 32 to 64-bits has led to removing Opera from the list of available browsers to set as system default. In order to fix this issue we temporarily stopped serving 64-bits for Windows till the proper fix is provided.”

      • Invan Katalkin

And on Win 7 we have the same problem

        • Robert Tomaszewski

Auto-update is not intended to perform a conversion 32- to 64-bit anyway. Only NI can do that (apart from the fact it is temporarily disabled). There can also be offline installer used to have x64 build installed from here:
          http://download3.operacdn.com/pub/opera/desktop/42.0.2393.85/win/

          • Invan Katalkin

OK it was clear. We talking about problem with setting Opera 64 bit as default browser. I can not do this in Win 7 x64. And in Win 10 too.

  • Herr Pietrus

How to check which version I use? X86 or x64?

    • Leonardo Gomes

In opera://about. In browser identification, if it says ‘Win64; x64’ on the right of Windows version then you are using the x64 one.

      • Herr Pietrus

Is it still x86 then? 🙂
        http://imgur.com/tMR2BgG

        • Yes. WoW64 means you are running 32bit application on 64bit system.

          • Herr Pietrus

I’ve just read that online installer temporarily doesn’t work with 64 bit version and auto-update doesn’t change the version too, so the riddle is solved 🙂

          • Herr Pietrus

Now I’ve read that online installer temporarily doesn’t work with the x64 version and the auto-update doesn’t change it too, so the riddle is solved

            I suppose that I should download this: http://get.opera.com/pub/opera/desktop/42.0.2393.85/win/ ?

          • Leonardo Gomes

To install the x64? Yes, download and install the ‘x64_setup’ one.

A date converter would be nice too

    • Leonardo Gomes

Date converter? What would be it?

      • Mehrzad4096

People around the world use different calendars; Gregorian, Hebrew, Islamic calendar, etc.
        What would you call it?

        • Ari

Converting dates is quite obvious. No need a feature for that. Not the same as currencies.

          • Mehrzad4096

Not practically. I always have to use Date converters to convert Hijri date to Gregorian dates and vice versa.

          • Ari

Way too specific feature for a few people that will use it.

            Any hints about what’s coming?

          • L33t4opera

Hi, you can try to figure out this by yourself 😉

  • Stanislav Jogui

Sadly, on my 64 bit windows, there is no option to install the 64 bit version. Could you please provide details on how the architecture check works?

    My systeminfo (snipped):
Operatingsystemname: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
    Operatingsystemversion: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    Operatingsystem-Buildtyp: Multiprocessor Free
    Systemtype: x64-based PC
    Processor: [01]: AMD64 Family 16 Model 6 Stepping 2 AuthenticAMD ~3000 MHz
    BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 1309

    • Currently easiest way to install 64-bit version is to use standalone installer that can be found here http://get.opera.com/pub/opera/desktop/42.0.2393.85/win/Opera_42.0.2393.85_Setup_x64.exe

      • webaschtl

How can I figure out which version I have installed? No information about the 32- oder 64-bit version on opera://about/ 🙁

        • There is information about architecture, perhaps not that obvious at first. On opera:about you will have:
          32-bit: System: Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)
          64-bit: System: Windows 10 64-bit

Generally if you can’t see WoW64 on opera:about it means you have 64-bit version.

          • webaschtl

I know that I have win10/64 😉 But I can’t be sure, if I would have Opera as 64 bit version, too – this not unimportant information is missing on the about page…

          • Ari

There is not missing, he has already told you. If WoW64 appears on that field then you have 32bits Opera version.

        • Юлия

Assuming you’re using Windows, Task Manager can tell you this information. Go to Processes tab – the processes marked with *32 are 32-bit, the ones which are not marked are 64-bit.

To open Task Manager either right click on task bar and select Start Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Escape.

On Windows 8/10, 32-bit processes are marked with (32 bit)

Please, please integrate a disable/click-to-play HTML5-audio/video option! It sucks when audios or videos play automatically when a page loads.

Content blocking by right clicking on an element and customizable mouse gestures are also features I miss.

    • Nekomajin43

Click-to-play for HTML5 is a must! And for gifs too.

    • Leonardo Gomes

An option to disable media auto play would be nice. I don’t get why web pages authors insist on using auto play.

    • L33t4opera

Hi Elling, regarding html5 audio/video, you can install the Disable HTML5 Autoplay extension for that purpose. Please be aware, that you would have to add exceptions (Mode Rules List) for some websites, for example “soundcloud.com nothing”, to be able to replay videos, or play music on those sites.

  • Fox Fetterworth

    Opera 42 still needs:

    1. An option to go directly to a page opened in a new tab. (If one exists I can’t find it.)

    2. Automatic highlighted selection of whatever’s in the search dialogue when the cursor’s placed there so it can be deleted immediately in order to add a new search term — same as how the address bar works.

Otherwise…GREAT browser — and back to the brilliance of the original Opera, which I used for years until someone screwed it up.

Guys, what is this ridiculous resize “feature” with the video popup? If I grab the top-left edge, I want the bottom-right to stay where it was.

I don’t know about others, but usually I want to see other stuff on my display, so I move the video popup to the corner. Now I have to move it every time I resize, because the other side is clipped.

You have been tinkering with this feature for half a year, and this is how you do it? Really?!

Yet another example of over-thinking simple things. I can’t believe I have to use this shit for at least months.

How do I export opera bookmarks?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      You use an extension.

      • siennagold

Thanks for the reply. Are u referring to the extension by Martin Sermak? Yes it does work but it doesn’t allow nesting folders?

But I’m wondering why Opera wants us to use an extension when in fact, we didn’t use one before. It was just automatic that Opera could easily export bookmarks without the need to get an extension.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Any extension that can export bookmarks, like V7 Bookmarks.

Opera Blink (Opera 15+) never had an export tool.

Sure wish you’d fix the Speed Dial thumbnail choice programming. What I find is that unlike with Opera 12, where the top of the page with its title was available as a thumbnail, some sites with Opera now don’t have any screenshot choices other than the tile, just grayed out shots – e.g., https://www.reportez.com/en-us/. And many others only have screenshots of current graphics or photos further down the page than the top, and not the site’s title line.

Choose one of the two last ones, either the 32-bit or the 64-bit one, I don’t know about the portable though.

      • BorgOvermind .

Made them kinda-portable by only copying the content of the “42…” dir. That’s the actual stuff that’s needed and the rest spawns in user profiles anyway. Would be interesting to have a guide for editing the files to change profile paths to current dir.

        • Ilyes Kraiem

Matter of fact they do provide a portable here : http://www.opera.com/computer/portable

I like the speed-dial option idea in general, but why are they all grouped and set by default? I cant I customize which web sites I want in speed dial and which dont? all I find for that is about older Opera versions where you could just add them by clicken a plus inthe corner, but that seems to have disappeared. Also the preferences dont give me any options

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can add/remove any page/site you want in Speed Dial.

      • somename

How? there is no + button, right click doesnt do anything, the shortcut command+b doesnt add it either and in preferences I can only set the maximum number of columns.

  • somename

One more question though. How can i implement an addin of a software ive got installed. Like Adobe Acrobat Pro. It can be implemented in other browsers, but in Opera I cant find this configuration, I only find extensions you have to download from the web.

    • Leonardo Gomes

You mean a plug-in? If it’s a ppapi one, Opera should be able to recognize and use it.

However, if it’s a npapi plug-in then it stopped being supported by Chromium based browsers a while ago.

Dear Opera developers: Can you add support for Netflix video at 1080p resolution (or higher)? This could increase Opera share in browser market.
    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742
    * Chrome, Opera and Firefox support playback of Netflix movies in 720p resolution in Win7, Win8.1 & Win10. IE11 in Win7 support only 720p (it uses Silverlight 5).
    * IE11 plays Netflix movies at resolution 1080p in Win8.1 and Win10. Edge in resolution 1080p or 4K in Win10.
Adding 1080p or 4K in Opera would especially important for Win7 users (all browsers play Netflix video at 720p in Win7; there is no Netflix app for WIn7)
Win7 is on 48% PCs and will be major Windows system for 5-10 years.

I want in speed dial and which dont? all I find for that is about older Opera versions where you could just add them by clicken a plus inthe corner, but that seems to have disappeared. Also the preferences dont give me any options
    regards

  • i agree with ur statement about : If you find it interesting, you can always add it to your existing sources. We want to keep the address bar as clean as possible, so this feature is disabled by default. To enable it, go to Settings (Preferences) > Browser > Personal news > Show available news feeds on address bar and check the checkbox. thank you for detail argument
