Hi,

Some time ago we released the 64-bit offline version of Opera for Windows. Since then, we’ve worked hard to make it fully functional and now are able to present the Network Installer for 64-bit builds. This is the well known network installer you already use to install Opera, but this version is smart enough to install the best option for you. In other words, it detects the architecture it’s run on, and installs either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Opera. Moreover, it’s able to upgrade (please don’t confuse with “auto-update”) from the 32-bit to the 64-bit version. After the upgrade, the 32-bit version is removed from the system. Of course it will keep your profile, so your data is protected, and the transition is smooth (you may not even notice it).
For these who don’t want to change their version, we’ve left an option to prevent the transition:

Opera x64 vs. Opera x86 (32 bits)

JetStream-Opera42beta-32vs64

This update brings also many bugfixes. Most important are:

  • Crash after double click on video detach icon on OS X is fixed
  • Click to play option is selectable again
  • Full screen mode issues are solved

Details available here as usual.

Cheers!

Thanks for Opera 42.0.2393.27 Beta update even though I won’t be using it because all files downloaded with this version also carry the security warning nag :
“This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”

    • Wojciech Jaszcz

It seems to be typical Windows message. What operating system (version) do you use?

      • Ari

No, it didn’t appear in Opera 41 I think or some earlier O42 Beta

      • nanana1

I’m on Windows 7 SP 1 64-bit and I have disable this Windows nag message using regedit and “SaveZoneInformation=1” and previous Opera Stable, Beta and Developer versions up to 42.0.2374.0 worked well to download all files without this message under its Properties :
        http://i.imgur.com/S2DgXv1.jpg
“This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”

And if you do not unblock this file, each time when you launch it to install your software, it will pop-out with an additional box message to warn you : http://i.imgur.com/E73QN9s.jpg which is a waste of time and effort to click on it since every files downloaded on the internet came from another network and computer anyway.

    • BK

What was the first build it appeared in, you know?

      • Ari

I think latest without message was 42.0.2374.0 Beta

      • nanana1

The first build the security nag message appeared on my files Properties downloaded with Opera that I know of is 42.0.2392.0.

Just tried both Google Chrome stable 54.0.2840.87, Google Chrome Beta 55.0.2883.44 and Mozilla Firefox 49.0.2 and all three browsers’ downloaded files do NOT have this security nag message on the same computer that I ran Opera with.

    DNA-57940 is fixed. Thanks.

Yes, fix for DNA-57967 is on the way, should be available in the next release.

After the update to x64 version, Windows 10 said that it encountered some problem with the browser and cannot set it as a default browser… In the settings there’s no option to set Opera beta x64 as a default browser… Windows 10 does not recognize it as such…

    • DMCA

go to configuration / programms / set opera as default

      • Илья Найдов

That’s the problem… Opera is not in the list there…
When I run the installer, right before the end of installation Windows shows an error… Something about “encountered a problem with the default web browser, reverting to Edge” (I have Russian OS, so I don’t know the exact phrase it has there in English)

        • Przemek Kudła

Can you give Opera’s version number? This problem was known (DNA-57738), but was supposed to be fixed already.

          • Илья Найдов

I was on the previous 32-bit Beta 42.0.2393.14 and today I’ve noticed that Opera has updated itself (red Menu button)… I went to my RSS to read what’s new… From there I’ve downloaded the 64-bit installer and ran it (before allowing Opera to auto-update properly I guess)… Maybe that’s part of the problem…
            Now it is 42.0.2393.27 x64…

          • Przemek Kudła

Thanks, I suspect such scenario was not tested. A ticket was created: DNA-58004

          • mikemanger

I had this issue as well on Windows 10 – the auto updater installed 42.0.2393.27 but I think it was still running 32-bit (in task manager) so I ran the network installer to switch to 64-bit. This messed up the default apps. Re-running the network installer registered the program again.

          • Илья Найдов

            Oh… I think I’ve fixed it…
I noticed that I have two opera_autoupdate.exe processes running, one of which was using 25% CPU (one core)…
I killed both of them and reinstalled Opera x64 on top again… This time there was no error message and Opera is available in Windows browser settings again… Hooray!..

  • Pierre771

Hello In that case, why are there 2 installation links, a 32 and a 64 ?

    • BK

the x64 is a legacy.. can be removed. It’s offline x64 only installer.

      • Pierre771

Remove it, it’s not clear at all !

        • BK

          Yes sir !

            thks !

  • EchoFromSpace

You aren’t forgetting the speed dial extensions, are you?

    • BK

ofc, this is tracked and on the way to be fixed before final. Thanks for reminder 🙂

  • Tom

Will the bug with the video popout not remembering its size (or rather width) after closing be fixed before this version hits stable?

    • BK

Hm.. should be already fixed. What’s your OS? What a build version do you test? Should be fixed by now in stable version in fact, that we released yesterday. See changelog https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2016/11/opera-stable-41-0-2353-56-update/ DNA-57756 Videopopout position not restored

      • Tom

I’m on Windows 10 x64. I’ve tried both the recent stable version ending on .56 and the beta from this post (portable). And yeah, most of the bugs with the popout, like video position are fixed in both of those builds – there’s some black flickering from time to time, but that might be because my graphic card is pretty old.

However, the SIZE of the popout is not remembered… at least not entirely. If I change the height of the popout, it seems to be the same the next time I open it, but the width instead of staying the same, seems to scale with the height to something that seems like a predefined ratio. So if I set make the popout tall but slim, the next time I open it, it’s still tall, but really wide, usually going out of the screen since I like to keep it near the right edge. And even the height is not restored if the popout is very small, then it just gets back to a bigger size (always the same) that’s just too big for my liking.

        • BK

OK. Great description. This is ineed a bug that we intend to fix in O42.

      • Tom

I’ve made some screenshot to make it clearer:

    Thanks…

  • sgrandin

Using the built-in update from 32 to 64-bit turned out to be a bad idea and I’ve reversed for now:
    1) Win 10 doesn’t recognize the 64-bit as the default browser and switches it to Edge (changelog says this was fixed);
    2) Speed Dial goes from 6 columns to 4 (Konami code not the issue);
    3) Desktop icon with dpi adjustment added is wiped out;
    4) 32-bit install not entirely removed (thankfully)

    Then…
    – System restore doesn’t restore 32-bit entirely or get rid of 64-bit install, which means leaving some pieces in the registry out of caution on uninstall;
    – even after copying back the former program directory, 32-bit version worked from launcher.exe but required a reinstall to get the old desktop icons to work

Putting my computer in your hands doesn’t seem like a good idea. Will redo separate install and post results.

  • sgrandin

Tried a separate 64-bit install and that’s ok so far except Speed Dial is not 5 columns, tho setting is 6 (and advanced settings is checked). How is that fixed? Konami code doesn’t seem to be the issue.

    • Leonardo Gomes

There isn’t a setting to choose the number of columns in Speed Dial but just the maximum number of columns.
So if you have 6 select then it may have up to six columns.

And as far as I know, the number of columns depends on some factors like screen size, resolution, etc.

      • sgrandin

No. It wouldn’t make sense that the same screen, resolution, window size etc., in x32 is coming out different in x64, although the max = 6 in both (difference by window size would be a bug or nonstandard programming). There’s something more to it. I thought it might be Konami code, but that’s not getting a response in x64.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, this is new info. In this case I guess the behavior should be the same.

          • sgrandin

The way to add and subtract SD columns up to one’s max setting is by resizing thumbnails via Ctl + or – .

          • Leonardo Gomes

For sure if you zoom in/ou the start page, there will be less/more speed dial columns.

          • sgrandin

I finally got Konami code to work. It ends in little b-a, not caps, which Wikipedia shows.

      • A sentence or two would not hurt, in addition to posting a link. Are you trying to say that it does not matter if this option is disabled, if someone wants to update the bit version? The option is disabled for me too, but I am currently using the stable channel, for which this bit version is not available yet.

        • Юлия

Well, I’m no Opera Team, so if you want an explanation as to why it’s not working, you’ll have better luck asking them, because I don’t have one. I provided an alternative solution. I personally find the current implementation to be confusing. Something like this would have made more sense: https://i.imgur.com/RUMVQd2.png

My advice: never trust net-installers and everything “auto” to provide the best result. My solution, which is manually download the specific offline installer, rules out both issues.

  • Hangouts extention stop working. It just open a new window and nothing.
It’s about extention from the chrome store.
And how I know which version I use? If it’s autoupdate itself on Win 10 x64, it’s autoapdate to x64-version, or I have to reinstall it from the executable setup file?

    • Leonardo Gomes

See Menu > About Opera to know what version you are using.

In x64 version you will see ‘Win64; x64’ in browser identification.

      Neat

While we’re at it, the native skin should also be updated too. That blue looks like I’m using XP, which is weird considering Opera does not support XP on newer versions. On Windows the skin should match one of Microsoft’s, either basic or classic skin; or be a neutral shade of gray; assuming Chromium browsers can’t use system skin. Chromium is already gray and black for private window (lighter shade when not in focus).

Hello team, I would like to ask if the inability to display notifications from Google Drive is on your radar. (Obviously I dislike having to install Google Chrome for that only, please address it!) Thanks 🙂

    • Rafał Chłodnicki

Reported DNA-58068 for it and investigated, and it appears that it’s a sniffing issue. If you spoof as Chrome (for example using inspector) then it works.

      • xirit64

Thanks a lot Rafal, I haven’t heard of any inspector, should I look for something in the extensions library as a temporary measure like an “agent switcher”? Would that work? (Going to test it now)

        • Rafał Chłodnicki

          Yes, that should work.
Inspector is an internal tool that can be opened for example using ctrl+shift+i (cmd+alt+i on Mac). But changes made there are only temporary so if you want more permanent solution for now, you should use one of many available extensions to change user agent to chrome.

  • Gloriam

Looks like with this update, news is no longer stopping for no reason, I’ll keep checking it in the next couple of days, then post here again, but it seems fixed.

Thanks guys if this was intentional, though even if it wasn’t, thanks just the same. 🙂

    • Leonardo Gomes

What do you mean by “news is no longer stopping”?

      • Gloriam

In the ‘new’ news page, in the past news would stop showing after a couple of articles (end of newsstream), usually no older than 4-5 hours maybe more, while it’s suppose to go up to 14 days (according to a mod, which confirmed it was a bug).

It currently seems to work across all my devices (3).

  • Has anyone noticed the following two bugs on the Linux 64-bit version:
    – Sometimes , when I close the browser, a few processes are left running. This leaves the user profile open and you get an error when you try to reopen the browser. You have to manually kill the processes. This doesn’t happen every time I try it, but it seems to be more likely the more I use the browser before closing it.
    – Bookmark thumbnail selection seems to be partially broken. When I try to save a bookmark/speed dial, more often thab not the only option that I havd as a thumbnail is gray rectangle. Other times I get a few more options but a gray rectangle seems to replace the onr option that just takes a screenshot of the whole page.

Both of this problems do not seem to affect Opera Stable. I tested both of them on Ubuntu 16.10. Has anyone else experienced any of these problems?

Besides that, I have been unable to get Flash to work on Opera for Linux. I thought it was able to pick up Pepper Flash from Google Chrome like on Windows, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. So, how do I install Flash for Opera on Linux (more specifically Ubuntu)?

    • Kornelia

First issue was already reported and it’s tracked in our bugs system as DNA-58039.
Pepper Flash is no longer supported on Linux, you need to install flash from Canonical Partner repository.

  • sgrandin

As far as I can tell, there’s no specific setting for the number of columns showing in the Speed Dial, but only a max. Using Ctrl + and – seems to zoom in and out, but that’s not really a setting that one can depend on; e.g., mine was back to 5 columns on cold boot just now, tho max is 6 and I had used the Ctrl adjustment to get 6 in a previous session.

    • BK
