We all know the feeling. You want to check out your favorite website, but when you open your laptop or turn on your computer, you realize the browser is closed. You click on the browser icon and then have to wait while the browser opens all your previously opened sites…

We have a solution for you that makes your browsing faster: Opera 41 includes a new, smarter startup sequence that cuts away almost all the wait time, no matter how many tabs you open on startup.

In addition, Opera 41 has several other improvements, like longer battery time when video conferencing and lower CPU usage for video pop-out.

Smarter startup sequence = faster browsing

For more than ten years, the Opera browser’s default setting has been to let you start where you left off. Now, the new smarter startup sequence makes the browser start up faster by prioritizing which of the previously-used tabs are likely to be most important for you. As such, the most recently active tab and any pinned tabs will load first, while less important tabs will be loaded with decreased priority. For most users, this will feel like the tabs are opened immediately, without waiting time.

Test results show an average improvement of 86% when testing startup time with more than 42 tabs open in the previous sessions.
Web

For a set of around 10 tabs, the gain is still above 50%.

This year, we have stepped up the game for browsers and cut as many pain points for users as possible. That’s why we have introduced unique features like VPN, native ad-blocker, battery saver and video pop-out. For this release, we devote our focus to speed and performance. Here are some other improvements that make Opera more powerful than ever before:

Longer battery time when video conferencing

When using battery saving mode, Opera now detects which video codec can be hardware-accelerated and tries to choose that codec when doing video conferencing via WebRTC (this includes services such as Google Hangouts). This should save a lot of CPU and battery for our laptop-using, video-conferencing hobnobbers out there! And, even if the Opera browser can’t find a hardware-accelerated codec, it will now try to limit the pixel count when in battery-saving mode to reduce CPU usage, if possible.

Hardware-accelerated video pop-out

Since Opera became the first browser to introduce the video pop-out back in May, the videos displayed have been handled by software. This could cause extensive CPU usage, which again could lead to general system slowdown on low-end computers. With Opera 41, you get a fully hardware-accelerated video pop-out. This should greatly limit the need for CPU support and free your PC resources for other things while you watch your favorite movies.

The test results show up to 30% less CPU usage after this change.
Improved video popout

Personalized newsreader improvements

Opera’s personalized newsreader, one-stop news tailored for users’ needs, has received a long list of improvements, including an option to add a source even if the user doesn’t know the exact RSS URL, as well as history navigation, so you can go back to the previous view. First 🙂 Thank you & keep up the good work!!

    • BK

      thanks and congrats!

    • xirit64

What happened, did you upgrade from XP? 😛 🙂

      • Kai Ockendorf

        hmmm, maybe 😉

        • xirit64

          Ha ha, gratz! 🙂

  • Кostadin

    Good morning! 🙂

  • ktxgio

    thanks! in download

  • cicciazzo

perhaps a bug: I cannot play this video: http://www.techamok.com/?pid=1
    (with chrome it works).

    • Wojciech Jaszcz

What platform do you use? Win, Mac, Lin?

      • cicciazzo

        sorry… tested on windows10 x64.

        • Robert Tomaszewski

On that particular page I cannot see any video to play. Just double checked with Chrome too 🙂

          • cicciazzo

sorry, cut and paste gone wrong… correct site:
            http://www.techamok.com/?pid=17946

          • Robert Tomaszewski

Ok, thanks. That page in Opera 41 told me to update Flash Player so I did it. After installing new FlashPlayer and restarting Opera that page shows the video to me. Can you double check you use the most recent FlashPlayer, please?

          • cicciazzo

in windows control panel I see flash version 20.0.0.306.
how can I check if opera uses this version?

btw, the page doesn’t ask me to update flash.

          • Check here on Adobe’s site http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

          • Ok it looks like there is a video there. Nothing loads on Opera though.

            Edit: Flash PPAPI 23, Oct 14th 2016.

    • I see no video XD

      Win10 x64, AMD 6950, Catalyst 15.7.1.

  • iPristy

Almost can’t keep up, single tab loading is now super fast. I see you’re also using delay loading background tabs. Is this your in-house improvement or just Chromium?
    Linux Mint 18

    • Wojciech Jaszcz

This is as expected by new design. It is in-house improvement.

  • Cryio

Opera is maturing like a fine wine, at a much faster rate nowadays than Edge, Firefox or Chrome.

  • tom21

Good, but we are almost in 2017, I refuse to use a 32bit browser…

    • K. K. VinayKumar

What benefits you’ll get if you use 64 bit browser?

      • What do you think?…

      • tom21

Performance and security, Google will tell you how.

        • Ari

Do yourself a favour and Google it, you will see no performance difference whatsoever, apart from 64bits version taking up more RAM.

          • x64 over x32, besides having more logical addressing space, also has the side effects of more parallelism in code execution, greater register sizes, and other inherent efficiencies that I can’t remember right now. There is a reason x64 Windows runs slightly faster than x32, given sufficient physical memory to support the slightly increased memory footprint of x64 code. If you’re dubious of the last point, go check x64 vs x32 game benchmarks. The FPSes are marginally higher almost always on x64.

          • Ari

We are talking about browsers not games or operative systems. I have used Adobe PS and got benefits from x64 version. This is about a browser, and imagine that if we are talking about marginally performance gains on an SO or games given the millons and heavy operations that these do, then you won’t find ANY site that tells you that x64 browser versions are worth it. At least it has been like that since Chrome and IE released their first version like 1-2 years ago.

          • And you’re saying this based on what? Your own subjective use patterns? You do realize that you are not the only person that uses the Internet right? While neither I nor you from the sounds of it run close to doing anything like this, I know for a fact that there exist people out there that run with up to 30+ tabs in the background at a time; for those people, there is a very tangible performance benefit. And even if not, shaving 1% off of CPU operations of pessimistically ~500ms will still add up over the span of months and years, provided you pan out wide enough.

          • Ari

Still not reading a single technical and practical use case from you, where a browser would benefit from x64. Good try deviating the discussion though. Cheers mate.

          • tom21

Please do everyone a favor and inform yourself. One example, you should understand it easily:

            http://www.howtogeek.com/241501/you-should-upgrade-to-64-bit-chrome.-its-more-secure-stable-and-speedy/

          • Looks like you’re terrible at connecting the dots. I explicitly said that for people that run upwards of 30+ normalized tabs, there would be a tangible benefit: As in, 1-2% less CPU usage. 1-2% CPU usage on a modern computer is nothing to scoff at: On older computers, the relative gains would be even higher.

          • Ari

On older computer, memory footprint would be prioritized over cpu usage, which x64 is terrible at compared to x86. I would say someone wouldn’t even see any gain below 60-80 tabs so that leaves almost every person out of benefits from x64 browsers. Of course there are always exceptions.

          • I suppose it depends on rendering engine. Gecko is far more memory footprint friendly. But then again, it’s also more CPU friendly. So yeah. I agree with you. Very fringe case indeed if it does occur (which it regardless probably still does).

      • Jan Pospieszalski

Maybe using more then 4gb of ram memory @ system?

        • Arjan van Leeuwen

That’s not really a good argument in this case: Opera uses a process per renderer (usually per tab), and each process can use 4GB.

Not that I”d want them to use 4GB each. But they can.

      • Ari

LOL I will get my popcorns and read why people need a 64bits browser. This should be fun.

    • Aneta Reluga

Stay tuned – we are working on the 64-bit release.

      • tom21

        For Opera 41?

        • bwat47

          Opera 42 afaik

  • Vikruntasas

    Gud jerb,.

Now please give us x64 stable builds 🙂

  • opt

Interface is too big on 125% scale in Windows

    • sgrandin

      Agreed. Try this for older 100%: “C:Program Files (x86)Opera betalauncher.exe” –alt-high-dpi-setting=96 –disable-update

  • vedmezhatko

Still waiting for return of old close button on pop-up video window… 🙁
    (Close AND pause the video)

    • vedmezhatko

Also new window can’t remember its size and position. I have to adjust it each time I close-open it.

      • Aneta Reluga

What is your OS please? I am unable to reproduce on Win7, and I tried a few repro steps, including closing and reopening Opera.

        • vedmezhatko

          Win7 x64
Try to make the pop-up window very small and after that close it and open it. It looks like it has some minimal size Opera can remember. If you make a big window then Opera remembers it no problem. But if you make very small window then Opera next time will open the window of some “minimal size” which is larger than I usually prefer.

  • Jan Pospieszalski

There are still nasty popups on piratebay page when you click on the background of the page. There are stupid ads in new windows, even when I have adblocking @ opera. Can You do sth with that please? Popups in 2017 is just annoying.

  • sgrandin

faster is nice, but doesn’t replace some of the basic features of the old Opera that you have failed or refused to include (ones I’ve spoken to here a number of times).

    • Developing a fluidly coded web browser is not easy. Furthermore, adding all of the features that were present in the penultimate incarnation of Presto, which accumulated over the span of (nearly?) a decade, would take time, even if they decided that it was totally worth it to replicate said features in Blink.

Now, that having been said, they have been adding lots of useful features (in my opinion, as a power user) consistently over time, all while, as of recently at least, maintaining fluidity and optimization of the code; of the features that they have not yet added, I deduce that it is probably a combination of the features being of such utility only to an insignificant fringe proportion of users, such that most power users could conceivably use the browser to its full capacity without the need for said features, and also the relatively heavy resource cost in time, coding, and manhours required to implement and add those features to the browser.

  • Vlad

    WTF?! where update Opera Dev??

  • A CPU spike on first boot after Opera update to 41

    macOS 10.12.1

Future option to only load tabs that are active and not in a minimized window?

    • Robert Tomaszewski

Higher CPU spike can be a side effect of delayed loading of many tabs while restoring the previous session.

      • Why not only activate the active tab in windows that are not minimized, that would drop a massive amount of CPU usage during start up, and the others can be loaded as needed (when the end user opens that tab)

  • anonymous_alien

Thank you for fixing the bug that I reported – extensions not loading when Opera was launched in private mode.

  • sate5232

In the High DPI(Windows) , opera still is so bad, if no solve this problem, I will never use opera.http://i.imgur.com/k1ZEjAj.png
and it is no problem in firefox and chrome.

    • Hmm, don’t have the time to independently verify this myself yet, but I do recall Opera made significant improvements to DPI scaling on Windows way back when the Norway office was still around. This might be a bug though that’s reappeared, and if so, definitely needs to be addressed.

  • sate5232

The Chinese typed the wrong word.
    http://i.imgur.com/qQ2DLS5.png

    • Aneta Reluga

      Can you elaborate please? Thanks.

      • My guess is a spelling error maybe (tho I don’t know if there is a spelling difference between the different kinds of Chinese)

        • Aneta Reluga

Even if so, I can’t see any issue in sate5232’s report because I don’t know either Chinese version.
The best way to report would be to indicate exactly which glyph (or a set of glyphs) is problematic, e.g. by underlining, and then propose the correct replacement; sate5232 could you please help with this? Thanks in advance.

  • Reloading any web page closes video pop-up in this version…

    • BK

      a new panic button 😉
      thx for reporting

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks! It is tracked as DNA-57741 now.

  • Davy49

Hi, I just updated to the latest version of Opera ( 41 ), I’m running opera on my computer that’s running windows 10 64-bit. Is it me..or have other user’s noticed that on the speed dial page there is no longer a show news option. ?

    • Hi, everything is fine with your build. News are not gone, they are available on the left – check the news paper icon. It has better configurability and supports RSSes. So you can read exactly what you want.

      • Davy49

        Hi Maciek,
Thanks so much for that information.
        David

  • Spideymang

Thanks for the Update Krystian & opera staff, you rock!

  • Hello there opera team , Im having some troubles fixing some text css errors that happens in my site when i use your browser . The grid makes the text look weird. The site is here : http://novelepubs.xyz/

  • Karel

Flash player is not working on Linux Ubuntu. Chrome and Chromium is ok.
I have installed pepperflashplugin-nonfree from repository.

    • Andrew Andreyuk

pepperflashplugin-nonfree is broken. Use adobe-flashplugin package

    • What version of Flash & what version of Ubuntu?

    • Radek Rzepecki

pepperflashplugin is not longer supported on linux, so adobe flash needs to be installed instead.

    • Nick Volt

Using Flash is bad (especially in Linux).
If you need to play same videos just download ffmpeg:
      https://ffmpeg.org/download.html
(ffmpeg in distro’s repo may not work)

  • Kalo

Its great how fast it is but is there a setting to not load background tabs?

    • BK

Thx. There is no such setting now. We might add it in next version.

      • Kalo

Thanks for consideration, I have some tabs opened that I dont need loaded every time.

      • RingMyDingDong

Thanks, please add the option to load background tabs automatically 🙂

      • kesha2000

+1 for the setting to turn off extended lazy session loading in favor of loading background tabs on activation.

  • Izer0

    Still not fixed:

#1 – tabs stacked to left and quickly back to full width – I know, it is on the list for O42

#2 – loooooong loooong time bug – icons on tabs does not show properly. Right now my Opera loads and show all icons on tabs (first run after update to 41), screenshot here: http://www.softpae.com/opera_2.jpg … Closed Opera and opened again, only 1/3 of all icons shown!!! http://www.softpae.com/opera_3.jpg

So definitely, it’s not true, that it can’t be shown on so much tabs. And … again – all new tabs is without icon, also on the first run with 380 icons/tabs, all new tabs is without icons. So, it must be rendering problem, definitely. Previous video:

    http://www.softpae.com/opera2.mp4

I think you are not repainting icons properly. Please, fix this long long term bug for us, who use Opera heavily!

#3 youtube video is not stopped when I close popout video, it working on 39.

    • Holy christ, those tabs.

      • Izer0

Try to search any fix for e.g. windows server problem, or exchange problem, open all this sites from Google to new tabs and you have 50 – 100 tabs in few minutes. And this is only one problem. Try to search for something on eBay, open it to new tab to compare and you have 200+ tabs. Open 4 news websites, open all interesting posts to new tabs and you have another 50 tabs. Probably, some guys never open new tabs, they use open+back(space) 300 times per day 🙂 There is more ways how to use browser 😉

        • I use new tabs, but to a limit, since I recognize that it is a drain on system resources and can also recognize when I can perform the same task at mostly the same efficiency without opening up as many tabs as possible.

    • Blapidoup

The video not stopping when closing the pop-out video is a feature. Shouldnt be fixed.

      • Izer0

Are you sure? It was not “feature” on O39. Maybe it’s like some bluescreen features in Windows 🙂 No hate … there is more than this feature, video popout closed on F5 on different tab or on Backspace, focusing problems, this is not feature, this is bug. And if you are not member of desktop developer team or you don’t have link to clarification post, please do not reply to people with this “it is feature” story 😉 I am not interested on your opinion 🙂 (Peace)

  • Zin

It’s great to see optimizations but still in the hope to see lost features of Opera 12 back like RSS that came back, i want to stop using Opera 12 but i’ll only do that once the new Opera gets them features all like they were.

  • SteveX

There is always a problem with Youtube videos: with codec avc at 50/60 fps there is heavy lagging and stuttering, so watching these types of video is impossible. With Firefox is all ok. Is it a Chromium issue? Try to see this video for example: https://youtu.be/187a0gDD42E

    • Izer0

Playing without any issue on 1080p60. Try to update your video driver, I know I also had to update video drivers.

      • SteveX

My video drivers are already the last available…

        • Your v16 Crimson Edition drivers are beta for the legacy GPU that you have (it’s the same for me); they aren’t releasing any new ones, so try downgrading to the last official release (15.7.1).

          • SteveX

I’ve already tried that version (and an older version too, the 14.12) and it’s the same, the problem persists. I find Crimson Edition better for me, even if they are beta they are very stable and lighter. However you should check if you have dropped frames with avc/h.264/60fps videos, cpu usage remains low even to me. I did some search on the internet and it seems that I am not alone with this problem, it’s Chomium/Chrome related, with other browsers with different engines all is fine.

          • Watching this Titanfall 2 video at 1080p60 on Youtube, I encounter no perceivable stutters or dropped frames, only a constant FPS (which seems correctly to be about 60); the only exception is in the drop pod scene near the very beginning, where there is a brief jerkiness somewhere on the scale of 300-1200ms, about 3 times. But that could very well have been real-time rendering lag when the videostream was being recorded. Total watchtime was 2 min 17 secs, starting from 0:00.

            Can’t recall if I’ve noted my setup here, so: Win10 (1607) x64, AMD 6950, Catalyst 15.7.1, 2500k @ 4.6ghz, 8GB RAM, SF-2281 SSD.

          • SteveX

That video is encoded with vp9 and there are no problems with this codec, no dropped frames, all is smooth. As I told before only with avc/h.264 there are problems.

          • Ahhh, got ya. Forgot to account for codecs. Mind giving me a an AVC/H.264 URL then?

          • SteveX

You can search on Youtube a video with 60fps and then check the codec used (avc or vp9), try this one for example: https://youtu.be/64FUpbjmBx0. Make sure you watch this video in 1080p60 and check if it’s still encoded in avc (after a few time and a certain number of visualisations all videos are automatically re-encoded in vp9), checking also any dropped frames.
However I find that the problem is GPU related, it’s not strictly related to the browser. I have this problem with h.264 1080p+ at 60fps with hardware acceleration on. I tried a video with MPC-BE with DXVA enabled and the reproduction was almost impossible, so there is a bug with the driver, but with all drivers I tried it was the same.

          • How did you determine that it was GPU related then if you couldn’t reproduce it in AV playback software?

As for the youtube videos, I tried out like a good ~8 in addition to the one you posted; none of them are 1080p60 H.264. Always VP9 if 1080p60.

          • SteveX

In fact I wrote that this problem is also present in sofware video players with hardware acceleration enabled (DXVA), I use MPC-BE. Did you read that?
Try these two videos, they are 1080p60 AVC: https://youtu.be/VY2duiNqMF4, https://youtu.be/YseKG-rbzOM.
If I disable video hardware acceleration in Opera these videos are smooth. Now I decided to keep hw acc. off.

    • BK

Hm.. works well here. Can you please share more details? OS, CPU, GPU?

      • SteveX

Win 10 x64, Intel i7 860, AMD HD5870 with latest drivers (16.2.1). However are you sure that youtube video I posted is using avc codec and watched in 1080p? Like in this image: https://postimg.org/image/m2gxoirtf/

      • SteveX

With Chrome it’s the same, it’s a common problem with AMD gpu and Chromium/Chrome. If I disable hardware acceleration in opera://flags avc video are quite smooth. Even smoother if I activate h.264 software decoding.

    • No lag here. i5-2500k @ 4.6ghz w/ downclocked HD6950 on Windows 10 x64; 2-5% CPU usage on Opera, 2-6% gross GPU usage. Catalyst 15.7.1.

Note: All flags are set to default (Seems to mean hardware acceleration is on).

  • John A.

Despite enabling ‘Delay loading of background tabs’, pinned tabs continue loading at start up.

    • ShintoPlasm

I’m pretty sure this is by design… That’s what distinguishes pinned tabs from regular ones, no?

      • bwat47

        Firefox behaves the same too

    • ShintoPlasm

Update: looks like the “Extended lazy session loading” flag is now enabled by default. When you switch it to ‘disabled’ tabs do not automatically load at start-up.

      • John A.

Thank you bro. I fixed it after your reply.

  • Cenon M.

This update is awesome! Thank you!

  • KWP

Terrible lag when playing any YouTube video.
The video doesn’t load instantly – I have to wait 9-11 seconds for it to begin. On a 1gbps connection.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

    • BK

Can you try on clean profile please (custom USB install)? Do you have custom antivir? What OS ? Do you have VPN on?

      • KWP

Yeah I have F-Secure but minutes before update YT was working fine. Windows7. No VPN.

        • BK

ok. Ang GPU and CPU? 🙂

          • KWP

            Intel Core i5-5300U @ 2.3Ghz
            RAM: 8GB
            GPU: Intel HD Graphics 5500

          • BK

            thanks, we will investigate tomorrow.

          • KWP

BK, I don’t think you have to. Clean install solved the problem.
It works fine now. Thank you for your support 🙂

    • Andrew

I hava the same lag but using old opera 12. So i thought that it is youtube problem. but in other browsers it is ok.

  • hassanraza

Why we still have download flash speratly?

    • It is not part of the browser, and you can set the PPAPI plug in to update automatically in the Flash Player Preferences

  • I like the News update, but there are a few issues. First, I don’t understand why you can’t simply add a feature that would allow to scroll “down” from speed dial and go directly to news. Adding a news shortcut that can be set to anything would be nice too. Second, a lot of sites aren’t even working with this. I don’t even understand how it’s supposed to work. e.g. http://www.gq.com/ If you go to the site there are categories: Style Grooming Women Entertainment Culture Video. Most of these do not show up. And some of them are just random like GQ: Food etc which have 2-3 articles. Vice news is another example. Completely broken.

    EDIT: Also, no news sync?

    • Hi. Glad you like it 🙂 We played with “scroll” to initiate news but it was a bit strange effect and we decided to ditch it. Shortcut sounds interesting though.

Site you’re talking about (www.gq.com) is an interesting example. It is a vivid portal with numerous subsections (culture, video etc.) but it seems it is not actively maintaining RSS for users (only one feed: http://www.gq.com/services/rss/summary). As not everything is exposed our service (discover) can’t read it. Some sites tend to switch away from RSS and use Facebook/Twitter for that purpose. In other words we can’t assure that every single page with work correctly. There are over 8000 individual sources in the catalog.

As for the limited amount of articles: recently we have identified a problem that causes such a behaviour. Fix is on the way. So stay tuned 🙂

What do you mean by news sync? If you log into Opera account, your “My sources” configuration should be synced across devices.

      • Thanks for the reply and explanation! I hope you guys add news shortcut at some point.

I took the time to add sites to “My sources” on my home PC. However, they are not showing up on my work computer or my laptop. It’s also missing from sync: http://i.imgur.com/KEcedqM.png

Version: 41.0.2353.46 – Opera is up to date
        Update stream: Stable
        System: Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)

  • Andrey

On all streams, if I click the navigation keys (eg back or forward) in one tab – detachable video from another tab lost from the screen. Why? (

    • Kornelia

That is a good question and I will report this as a bug. Thanks for pointing that out.

    • Loysek

It also disappears when you refresh any page

      • Andrey

Heh, “Reload button” & F5 – disappear, if reload from context menu – all ok )

        • Loysek

You are right – reloading from context menu is ok but not when refreshing with “Reload button” or F5

    • Kornelia

Is going to Settings – Clear Browsing Data – Third party services data solves the problem? It is not connecting or what is the problem?

      • Ich Bin Deine Tod

VPN does not connect, and in beta this was no problem, removing the third-party services does not solve the problem

      • Ich Bin Deine Tod

Here’s an experiment: Opera 42.0.2392.0 Dev, Opera 41.0.2353.30 Beta VPN connects, and Opera 41.0.2353.46 Stable, 41.0.2353.46 portable is not connected.

A request to Opera developers please change the pinned icon shortcut for Windows 10 the current one looks out of place with rest of the pinned icons. I would suggest you to make its background red and Opera logo white or else totally remove the pinned tile like icon and let Windows use its default style.

    • I think it’s fine as is. Also wouldn’t be opposed to a change though.

      • K. K. VinayKumar

No, it is not. It looks odd. White Opera logo with red background would look good.

        • Well, hey, that’s your opinion then, and you’re entitled to it. And like I said, I’m not opposed to it one way or another, so I say go ahead and change it.

  • Site bug or Opera bug on http://garwarner.blogspot.com/2016/10/yevgeniy-nikulin-hacked-linkedin-and.html with the text being partly cut off on the right ?

    • Kornelia

Rather site bug since other browsers displayed the content the same way…

  • Hindu Papanreu

I was just about to switch another browser just because of this bug. At least someone took care of it after many versions. 🙂 🙂

And yes, I have to give credits; this version of Opera is one of the biggest updates of Opera. I thank to everyone who got involved on development.

    • Yeah, haven’t been around on the blog in a loooong time (and seemingly a lot of the oldies from back then are gone now too), but I have to say, the browser has gotten ridiculously good – surprisingly good – after and in spite of the closure of the Norway office.

      Great job Poland office guys!
Keep up the good work! 🙂

Can you make the O Menu level with the tab even in mimimized mode? Or replace the O menu to the top right position like Chrome? It saves viewing space.

I like it that Opera still smaller than other Chromium browsers, and now if it’s true faster than more reason to love…

    • Ari

This!! I want this too! Not minimised mode. It should be non-maximised window.

  • Ploblems with WebGL: a) webgl report say that × This browser does not support WebGL 2, × This browser supports WebGL 1, but it is disabled or unavailable, b) on Mapillary site: “Your browser does not support WebGL or it’s not enabled. To experience Mapillary, you need WebGL. Please enable it and try reloading this page.”

    • Robert Tomaszewski

WebGL 1.0 works in Opera browser, v. 2.0 is not implement in other browsers too. You can verify it with https://www.khronos.org/registry/webgl/sdk/tests/webgl-conformance-tests.html – in my case v. 1.0 passes 100% with Opera. However it might be the case that some web pages do not know this yet 🙂 You can try to workaround this problem with switching the way the browser presents itself in User-Agent. E.g. you can try out one of Switcher available in https://addons.opera.com

      • Thanks but in my case it doesn’t help. Khronos.org shows: This browser does not appear to support WebGL (v 1.0), User-Agent Switcher doesn’t help also. Opera 40 worked fine.

  • Jeena

It’s a pitty that I can’t use Opera because I only use open source software.

    • yigido

      Ok

    • Don’t know what you’re trying to get at here. Opera perceivably will never be OSS; it’s commercial. And there’s nothing wrong with commerical; epistemologically speaking, the concert functioning of law enforcement and the proprietary software’s privacy policy should be enough to gaurantee desired operation of the software, even if you do not have direct access to the sourcecode.

      • Jeena

Epistemologically speaking, we have seen that the law enforcement and privacy policy is not enough to guarantee desired operation of the software, please see all the Snowden leaks about how the NSA operates for example.

        • I really do need to catch up on Snowden speaking of which.

But, anywho, based on my probably rather incomplete knowledge of the whole Snowden affair, what I see happening here is there is a non-enforcement of the seeming letter of the law, but only because it is facilitated by elements of government higher up that supersede that pedestrian law. So, in other words, the rational paradigm presented to you, the common citizen, is not being violated – ie, Snowden is not showing anything illegal (this is the part that I’m most unsure of, so please correct me if I’m wrong).

Epistemologically speaking, you can’t gaurantee that you’ll ever directly know the direct operation of a proprietary software, but, what you can know is that it is reasonably the case that it still conforms to some form of law which is morally justified since said law is ultimately decreed by the government which is in turn, idealistically, ultimately elected by you, the people.

          • Jeena

As far as I can see you are correct with all your assumptions, there are two flaws in your reasoning in my opinion:

            1. The US government was not elected by me because I am a German living in Sweden.
            2. There are alternatives (in practice every other browser but the IE) with which I don’t need to rely on the company that they will always do the right thing.

          • 1. You could further extend the line of thought and say that you can choose not to be a consumer/user of products/services of American companies, which are governed by American law. But that brings up the varied and diverse debate about what “freedom” and “choice” really are in a capitalist system.
            2. If that’s the case, then what’s the problem with Opera? Sure, it’s not OSS, but it’s also not American (and, I’m supposing, based off of the implications of our discourse here, that it counts as one of the not-IE-browsers that you alluded to).

    • Just Saying

Open Source Software will not protect you from spying. Instead of making it your religion, you could just use any software you find comfortable, just learn to follow some simple rules – encryption, VPN, expendable accounts, no personal info, etc. If you”l make it your lifestyle, you’ll find a lot of joy using commercial software and casting almost no digital shadow.

    1. New rss plugin do not work when I turn off JS/plugins by default – gray background. Turn off JS/plugin by default and go to: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/feeds/rss2/all.xml

    2. When I turn off new rss plugin (from developers menu) Opera try to download file instead open it – example: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/feeds/rss2/all.xml (it should load source code and display it as it was in version 39).

    3. WakeLock do not work when playing movies on Linux – after X minutes screen saver is on (even with fullscreen on YouTube).

    4. MPEG4 movies do not work and there is no error info about it. If You cant add ffmpeg library please add some info where user can find it.

    5. How can I add a page (rss channel) to predefined sources (for all users) in “News” (rss agregator)? Is there any form for that or poll?

    • RSS handling is implemented as an internal plugin (see: opera:plugins). If you disable it there’s nothing to handle that content. The side effect is also that it’s treated as content to download and triggers one. Why do you want it disabled?

We have a vast (but obviously not big enough for everybody) catalog of different sources. Those are the ones (actually more as we have added some on the way) as were used previously (old news). But there is always a source missing. That’s why you can add your custom ones too. Adding a specific source to catalog that would be available for everybody goes through typical bug wizzard (https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/desktop).

      • Jeff

I use another program for RSS. I don’t want Opera doing that automatically for me. I typically follow several web comics through RSS. I can export that data and import it to a new computer easily. Is there a convenient way to do that that I’m missing?

      • Nick Volt

I disabled it because I’m a developer and I need to see source of this file. I don’t want to download and open this file in editor every time I change one letter in rss generator code.

What about issues 3 and 4? Especially 3 is quite annoying and it is very old.

        Thanks for reply.

      • Nick Volt

        And one more issue:

RSS plugin returns “TypeError: Failed to construct ‘URL’: Invalid URL” when one of image link has relative path – (ie. /images/photo.jpg instead http://example.com/images/photo.jpg ). Bug was hard to track because RSS in Firefox works ok with relative path and XML code was correct.

  • Cookie Monster

Can we get the option to get news back to the speed dial tab? I really don’t like the new seperate tab for it. Even if its better to customize i find it inconvenient to find the small icon. I got really used to it and now you make me consider switching to edge to get it back.

    • Aneta Reluga

Personalized news in the current implementation evolved a bit too much to fit into the speed dial logic (the configurability changed so much that it really required a separate tab).
By the way, what do you mean by “inconvenient to find the small icon”? Can you please elaborate which exactly steps are inconvenient for you? Thanks in advance.

      • Just Saying

        But can we have:
        1) An option to enable old News Feed back since it has some obvious advantages?
        2) An option to customize sources (at least some predefined ones) for the old News Feed so it could do pretty much the same as the new News Feed?
        Thank you.

    When will we have #enable-tab-discarding?

  • EagleSeven

I live in Ukraine and until the previous version update I used Google search in speed dial search box. After the last update, Google has changed to Yandex without warning and without any option to return again to Google. Please advise me, how can return Google in my speed dial search box.

    • BK

Hi, did you installed the build manually, if so, where did you got it from?
If you go to opera:about, can you point the full string below “Browser identification”, something like Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/54.0.2840.59 Safari/537.36 OPR/…. ?

      • Andrey

Yandex on speed-dial page, not a browser.

        • BK

          right!

    • Andrey

You need edit ‘Local State’ file, example – http://forums.opera.com/discussion/comment/15139032#Comment_15139032

      • EagleSeven

Thanks Andrey. I did it just like the link proposes, but after the save and restart, returns in Ukraine (UA) configuration. I have changed the timestamp too. I really can’t understand why Opera is doing this to its users. An option for choosing the search engine in speed dial search box, would solve the issue. p.s. I’m using Linux Mint 18

        • Andrey

Linux… – don’t know, may be need something more.. In windows, after ‘local state’ editing – google returns to speed-dial.

          • EagleSeven

I don’t think that Linux is the problem. I will make some tests on this config. file. Thanks anyway.

          • EggsAreCute

Thanks! But how do I relog?

          • Vux777

I guess you need to log off the sync and then log in again
…probably because on your screenshots there are private data (ids, tokens etc), and you need the new ones

          • EggsAreCute

It didn’t help. Now “Advanced configuration” button is always grayed out.

Btw on the clean installation sync didn’t work also. The only difference is user icon with blue exclamation mark in the top right corner.

Something happened to the exceptions list for javascript. I have javascript turned off as default and adds exception where I need it. But ALL my exceptions got malformed like this: [*.]nrk.no => http://nrk.no:80

The new format doesn’t work, so I must change them manually back to [*.]xxxxx.yy

The exceptions list for cookies, which has the same format as exceptions for JS, did not change.

I am not sure this is because of the update, but I saw it for the first time just now.

    • Nick Volt

It looks like some plugin issue.
In my case AFAIK uMatrix was adding rules to unblock JS with line: http://*
Check if there is “information” icon next to modified/adder rules – it will tell You the name of a plugin.

  • Sebastián Lalaurette

It would have been nice if you hadn’t changed the default mode without warning, though –I lost all my open tabs as soon as the browser updated.

I’m recovering them from history now, but seriously, a popup or a landing page about the new feature would have sufficed.

    • Przemek Kudła

Could you share more details? What do you mean by “the default mode”? It looks like a bug, not intentional behavior.

      • Sebastián Lalaurette

I had my Opera Stable set to “start where I left off”. This update changed it to the default setting of “open a set of pages” (an empty set btw), so I lost all my open tabs when I opened it.

I verified that the setting had changed in the Settings page, so I know it had actually been reverted by Opera by itself (I never change that).

Some information that could be helpful: I am on Windows 7, 32-bit version, and I use both Opera Stable and Opera Developer on a daily basis. Opera Developer is indeed set to open always with a predefined set of tabs. This should have no bearing on Opera Stable’s settings, of course, but I mention it just in case. Also, when this happened, I hadn’t opened the browser directly from its shortcut, but by clicking on a link in an email program. I open the browser this way all the time and it hadn’t forgotten my tabs or reverted this setting before.

        • Przemek Kudła

It seems that we have similar reports: DNA-50833. Before no one noticed that it might be related to settings. Thanks

  • 3 concerns :
    – When I clic on a RSS/Atom feed can I see the feed please (obviously) ?
    – The video pop up does not remember its last size and placement anymore
    – How do I set Qwant as my default browser, and remove Google from the speed dial ?

I really hope I’ll get an answer for once. Thanks !

    • ferrari_f2004

The same problem with video pop up for me. Opera 40 was much better in this option.

      • BK

Hi guys. Size and position is stored here, on win 10. What do you use?

        • ferrari_f2004

I use Win10 on my laptop and Win7 on my desktop. On both I have the same behavior. Only desabling #media-detachable-view-hwaccelerated I have this option working as it was in Opera 40. Nevertheless, if close and open Opera again, the size of video pop up does not remember, but position saves normally.

        • Same, Opera on W10.

What about my other questions ?
Are you paid by Google or what ?
I love Opera, but oh my, prorietary software is awful, I’m gonna use a real browser

Maybe I’m blind but.. is it still possible to align the news section under my speed dial?

      • Brian Pavanello

Why can’t we have both? I’m really missing this feature

  • Kkusu Are

unfortunately, my Opera 41 is just keep crashing after the update. It maybe because I changed the graphic card, viruses, OR it is on you. It will crash periodic anyway: you just boot it up, wait several minutes, and it reboots.

Not again… Why did you remove option to use old news feed? It was 100 times better, since you actually could choose what news category you wanted to see. Now i have games mixed with terrorism news – makes sense. NOT.

    • Some valid points here. I love that you can actually finally personalise your News Feed now (formerly Discovery), but I think it is a valid point that the convenience and utility of having preset categories to choose from is worthwhile to keep, and a regression to lose. I think it would be great for everyone if you managed to reintroduce those old categories to the News Feed, while keeping the present highly customizable per-source interface as well.

    • Just Saying

And I just loved the look of old news feed on the start screen. The new News Feed has no interface customizations – I even can’t remove the Sources panel from the left, and white background is tearing my eyes. Why remove such a good thing and replace it with an ugly bastard? Why couldn’t you guys just add an option to customize sources for the old news feed?

  • Oh also, one thing you guys should definitely add is a “Open link in new tab” (forgot the exact corresponding wording) for non-hyperlinked “links.” You already have the – Oh! I remember what it was called now. “Go to web address.” Make it so there is “Go to web address in new tab” or something to that effect; The other browsers already all have this since millenia ago, and, well, I hope I don’t have to explain why it’s a beneficial and useful thing to add.

    • Sebastián Lalaurette

You can hold Shift or Ctrl when clicking on that to get the desired effect.

      • Don’t really have a way to conveniently test this out now, but unless they’ve changed that, it doesn’t work, because I’ve tried it in the past.

      • Anonimo

Yes it works, my suggestion would be to add middle mouse button to that, like in firefox and chrome.

  • Ricardo

Congrats for the first build released with the latest Chrome security update available to date.

  • After updating, as soon as I turn on Opera it started loading my background tabs one by one 🙁

After a quick search on Google, I found a solution.
To retain the original function of the setting ‘Delay loading of background tabs’ (the flag is called ‘Lazy session loading enabled by default’), you simply go to ‘opera://flags/#extended-lazy-session-loading’ and disable it.

I understand wanting to make some of the browser features similar to other browsers, but why does this flag not have a setting of its own (maybe a sub setting of ‘Delay loading of background tabs’ called ‘Only load the last open tab’)

Is there any add on I can download to get back the old news feed in the speed dial? I don’t like how much customization I have to do in the new one, nor do I like the layout of the stories in the new one.

I usually used the one in my speed dial when I just wanted something interesting to read regarding topics I had a general interest in. The new News Feed feels useless to me. Anybody got any tips on how to deal with it? I would rather not switch browsers AGAIN…

    • Just Saying

Totally agreed. The layout of new News Feed is awful, I just liked those tiles on my beautiful Start Page. Why act like Microsoft and just force us to use what we don’t like?

  • Jean

I’m using the latest stable Opera v41 on windows 10 x64 v1607. The VPN with optimal location cause the a problem. Many websites can’t be loaded and the browser return an error page. If I select a specific location as United States, it works smoothly. I try the other locations in the VPN options and it still works slowly. The optimal location cause the problem all the time.

    • alligoodw

This is a great web browser, but I’ve opted to use it without the VPN feature. As a user, I’ve discovered that browsing is quicker without it.

Edit: Rewrote my comment to make sense.

  • Ivor O’Connor

I use Opera as my “safe” browser for browsing purposes. Safe in my mind means turning javascript, images, and everything else off and add exceptions for the sites I trust. Over the year or so I’ve been using this computer and several Opera upgrades I have not had any problems. However with the Opera 41 upgrade all my exceptions have changed from [*.]abc.com to http::abc.com:80. So two questions:

    1) Is there a file I can edit with vim to quickly change my images, javascript, etc., exceptions back so they work? Or can you put a button in the settings panel to “fix” the entries. Fixing meaning to replace the “http://” with [*.] and remove the :80?

    2) Instead of manually typing in the exceptions it would be great to have a button or keystroke to add the site to the exception list.

PS: I only have one extension installed and that extenstion is “Download YouTube Videos as MP4”.

    • Nick Volt

      1) You can try find it in “Preferences” file (in Linux file has no extension) inside Opera directory in Your system profile directory.

      2) Check “Site-specific Preferences” plugin. It can easy switch on/off any option per page without going to Opera settings every time.

@anet_qa:disqus: I got the impression that my Opera starts slower, so I checked out this post and verified my settings. It looks like with Delayed loading of background tabs option, it’s now indeed delayed instead of activated on click. Changes, changes, changes… After I already get used to something. Now, I cannot leave my “to-read-later-maybe-in-a-week” tabs opened in the background, because they will load every time I open my browser (which is not the best option for mobile internet, for example).

I can see that I can disable “Extended lazy session loading” in flags, so I will try to disable it right away, but will the old way of loading last session – only after the tab gets activated – be present in the browser when the flag is removed?

Log In tab > pop up, enter info, click on Log In, but no response (you can presumably enter any info to see this). Tried numerous times in last beta.

    • Andrey

May be you use adblock (or similar extensions), if yes – disable it on this site.

ps. If adguard enabled – site not working in last beta.

      • sgrandin

Have to turn off Ad Block and Opera’s ad blocker. Solution for now is to add it as an exception to Opera’s blocker and turn off page blocking in Ad Block. Thanks,

is it just me but anyone having problem highliighting or links text on webpages? It just refuses to highlight and allow me to copy and paste until i restart browser

What’s up with the DPI switch being dropped from Opera? Do i really need to use the command prompt “–alt-high-dpi-setting=96” every single time I want to start Opera?

    • Ari

      Add it to the shortcut

      • Alireza Aminian

Is that the best solution that the Opera team can up with, rather than simply solving the ongoing issue? Adding a shortcut for something that no other program on Windows requires?

        • Ari

Unless you open your programs by going directly into Program Files folder, then almost every program has a short cut on the start menu.

          • Alireza Aminian

That’s exactly what I am saying: almost every program has a shortcut on the start menu, without requiring the user to put a shortcut for the command “–alt-high-dpi-setting=96”, as you suggested above.
Almost every program doesn’t even need the command “–alt-high-dpi-setting=96” since they have the switch built-in.
Almost every program simply needs a simple shortcut as you mentioned, not an extra shortcut for the command “–alt-high-dpi-setting=96”.
I hope its clear now, not just for Opera, but for almost every program.

          • Ari

I don’t know what that command does… but you don’t need an extra short cut, just edit the one on the start menu/desktop.

          • Alireza Aminian

“Disable display scaling on high DPI settings” is grayed out (disabled) for Opera Launcher.exe.
I had tried this before, but its grayed out.

          • Ari

That’s odd I have got the option available.

          • Alireza Aminian

Didn’t work. The option is still grayed out on Launcher.exe.
I do have this option on Opera.exe and it is checked already, but the problem still exists and everything (menus, tabs, etc) are shown over-sized. I am not sure why Opera keeps playing with DPI settings, while no other program on Windows has this problem.

          • proffibra

Unfortunately it’s not just Windows. I have edited my shortcut to force lower DPI than it actually is, because everything gets too big. But it’s still a problem if I click a link eg. in my mail client, which doesn’t know about the DPI setting, and runs Opera in “huge” mode.

  • Blapidoup

The pop-out videos are not resizing well now.
Only one side is resizing, it makes the use of pop-out very unergonomic, irritating and frustrating :/

    • Ari

It works well here, resizing from every side/corner.

      • Blapidoup

When I say only one side is resizing is that the other one don’t, and thus introduce black bars.
If you resize horizontally it doesn’t resize it vertically anymore.

We really miss the “Search for text when I start typing” option from Windows versions, please-please make this very comfty setting available!

  • imspambot

The pop-out video goes fullscreen when browser is in fullscreen mode on macOS (10.12), not resizable and makes menu bar go white (I have it black). In windowed mode it is resizable, but fits the screen as a default. It worked just fine in Opera 40

  • Giovan Maria Catalan Belmonte

Sorry guys. The browser is fantastic, but…….i stopped and go to another browser: TOO much memory usage! Do something please, it’s REALLY too much compared to other browsers (see Firefox). I tested on same situations, same extensions, same pages…etc.

    • Ari

Can you be more specific? I actually use it because it’s better than chrome and similar to firefox.

      • Giovan Maria Catalan Belmonte

I was very specific. Same perfect situations, Opera consume on average 1gb more than Firefox. Simple

        • Giovan Maria Catalan Belmonte
          • Ari

That was 4 months ago, haven’t read any more comments complaining about it. I use it 8 hours per day all week because of my work not seeing any memory hugging, but again we don’t know your scenario. There is only a memory leak using VPN in certain cases though.

        • Ari

Very specific yeah, I’m still trying to find in your comment OS, Opera version, amount of tabs, time using it, extensions used, also “too much memory”, yeah really technical vocabulary there.

  • ShintoPlasm

I’m having a strange problem with this version. When trying to donate a sum of money on http://www.justgiving.com I get an error during the ‘Verified by Visa/MasterCard SecureCode’ verification phase. When this card verification process opens in a frame at the centre of the page (I believe that in the UK the process happens through http://www.securesuite.co.uk), a message appears in the frame saying “Session expired”, whereby I get forwarded to the JustGiving home page still *inside* the same frame. This is not happening in Chrome (latest stable) where the card verification happens as normal.

I’m using similar cookie settings in both Opera and Chrome.

    Any ideas?

  • Schoggiweggli

Video pop-out closes itself when hitting the back, refresh or home button (on another tab) since Opera 41, macOS 10.12.1. Very annoying and makes the pop-out useless, a major issue for me. Happens on two machines so it’s reproducible.

Does anybody encounter geolocation problems with opera 41.0.2353.46?
    http://prntscr.com/d44c70

It refuses do define my location, while at the same time chrome or firefox work quite fine. Any reason for that?

  • John Riehl

I’m new to Opera 41. How does one get to the advanced tab options on an iMac running Mac OS 10.12.1? Thanks.

  • Travail Detache
  • Khyros

Guys. What hell is with my settings being overridden? I chose to delay loading of background tabs whenever I open the browser to pick up where I left off with previous tabs. Now opera constantly loads all of them at once. Why?!

    • ShintoPlasm

Change the lazy loading flag in opera://flags

      • Khyros

Yeah I figured that out 2 days ago. Cheers.

    • Eik

As I remember this option is not new. The only difference is that opera does now all taps one after an other. This is no improvement. Before that opera only loads the active tap, which was much better.

  • jbs

Pc-windows8.1. With the new boot sequence you have spoiled the option of not loading the background tabs, now load the tab in the foreground and load or preload other 10 more of the background, consumes memory for those 10 more and goes slow, slow. I have 4 windows and many tabs but with the option of not loading the background worked very well, now as it loads 4 + 10×40 and consumes memory and process. And have not set how to configure this new option that would be correct. This is a big mistake. Before opera was perfectly adapted to my needs, now it is like the others

  • Ester

I have only one complain; when I close the browser and then open it again, it logs me out of all my sessions. I checked my cookies settings, and it’s not set to delete cookies after closing the browser. Does anyone else have this problem? What do I do?

Dear Opera developers: Can you add support for Netflix video at 1080p resolution (or higher)? This could increase Opera share in browser market.
    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742
    * Chrome, Opera and Firefox support playback of Netflix movies in 720p resolution in Win7, Win8.1 & Win10. IE11 in Win7 support only 720p (it uses Silverlight 5).
    * IE11 plays Netflix movies at resolution 1080p in Win8.1 and Win10. Edge in resolution 1080p or 4K in Win10.
Adding 1080p or 4K in Opera would especially important for Win7 users (all browsers play Netflix video at 720p in Win7; there is no Netflix app for WIn7)
Win7 is on 48% PCs and will be major Windows system for 5-10 years.
