Today, Opera 40 lands in the beta channel, with an improved battery saver and an improved news reader, which now allows you to add RSS feeds.

RSS in personal news

Many of you have been requesting RSS reader, and here it is: Opera 40 beta comes with the RSS support, making the built in newsreader even more customizable.

To use it, go to the personalized newsreader, and click a “+” button, Then, paste URL into search field. Once, recognized as valid source, you can add it.

Custom RSS can be read in both timeline and stacked view, the same way other news are displayed in personalized newsreader. The only difference is that the estimated reading time will not available for those sources.

A revamped battery saver feature

After the battery saver was released in May, we made several researches to learn what you’d like to improve in this feature. The result is the revamped, polished, and smarter battery saver, that finally reaches the beta stage.

New Power Saving

The battery saver interface has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly. All of you will automatically enjoy the power saving mode whenever your laptop is unplugged. Experienced users will find additional power saving settings, so they can set the exact level of their battery life, in which battery savings will automatically start to work.

Also, the popup shows more information regarding the function, for instance the remaining battery time.

Chromecast

This beta version also brings the Chromecast support. To use it, instal first the Download Chrome extension from the Opera’s catalogue. Then you will be able to install the Google Cast extension from the Chrome web store. Once it’s installed, and you have the special device attached to your display and operating in the same Wi-Fi network, the device should be detected and sending links should work.

Video pop out improvements

Further improvements have been added to the video pop out feature:

  • Video pop out button is less intrusive.
  • Once video is popped out into it’s own window, there is no button to reverse the action over the original video.
  • Video pop out button is not shown for short videos (shorter than 16 seconds).
  • There is just one button ‘X’ to close the window.
  • Closing windows doesn’t stop playback.
  • Even more sites and players are supported.
  • Clicking on video pauses / resumes the playback instantly.

Speed Dial suggestions

Adding most popular websites to your speed dials is now easier. At the moment, we experiment with the most popular websites and also investigate possibility how to make those suggestions more relevant.

Other improvements

  • New error page style has been added
  • Suggestion engine delivers now previous searches in address field and speed dial search

I think many are fix last I looked, Chromium bug?

    • NoName

Workarounds are not necessarily a bug that needs fixing in Chromium: It can be because of bad gfx drivers or hardware that is not quite up to date in specs.

      • Except when some of the bugs are closed on the Chromium side, looks like that page is not updated in 4 years

      • I don’t think a less than 3 year old computer would have not quite up to date in specs, I looked at some of the links and all of the links are to bug reports in Chromium some are closed others have not been touch in a while last time I looked

        • NoName

Yea, it should be quite up to date.
          I just tested it on my machine (i7 4790K / HD 4600).

The “Problem detected” in Opera Dev is almost identical with the one in Chrome Canary.

  • Nadia Ali

hi Opera time i am facing issue from last day in my website , i am ceo of ibirdnest and my website is not open properly on opera can you please check it , i am facing this issue from many day life insurance.

  • Yro

So, You updated Opera 39 to solve the problem with cleanning cache by just hiding the prolematic item? Whata hell is going on with You guys?

    • Arjan van Leeuwen

That item is for removing cache data from the VPN, which itself is not available in Opera 39. So hiding it is definitely the correct solution 🙂

      • ive

But.. but.. …. don’t throw logic at him! That’s unfair. Let him rant without having an idea about it!

  • Sebastian Żmijewski

    Kwejk ^^

  • Gloriam

Small problem, even with removing that suggestions bar in the speed dial, the page remains scroll-able while it previously was not, could you remove the extra (probably unintentional) space you’ve added?

    Thanks!

(Love the chromecast support, thanks! :D)

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for the opinion and the report too. It’s DNA-56407 now.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

I thought, you will add more features to the RSS-reader, before releasing it.

    • Cjcr

I think the same. Is very incomplete currently. We hope this is just the first step.

      • BK

Ehm.. this is kind a new.. People here always complain that we do not release something?..

It’s not like this release is game over for Opera development;) We tend to enchance browser features as we go.
Please provide a list of features you would like to see added to RSS.

        • Alex Wazovskiy
        • Nekomajin43

          Here we go! 🙂

Page action icon in the address bar to detect and add available sources. (Most important IMHO.)

Categories/tags/folders, whatever, to organize feeds and preset sources in the reader. Perhaps tags would be the best, because they allow to organize feeds into multiple categories.

The ability to mark as read/unread, and an indicator too. (Also helpful for preset sites.)

The ability to read the whole article in place, if the source provides it. A nice (floating?) toolbar in the upper right edge would be fine with a few buttons: mark as read/unread, load the whole article, save page into bookmarks(!), just to name a few.

Search/filter in feeds and news, at least in their title. And filter by date. (A search box in the header would be good, like in the bookmarks manager.)

In the sidebar of the reader, display a small RSS icon before the custom feeds, a folder icon before the categories (that you will implement, right? 🙂 and something else before the preset sources. (The sites’ favicon would be too colorful and ugly.)

Move the view mode toggle from the right side to the left. Just to be consistent with the bookmarks manager.

In general, the ability to remove both the Top50 and the Reccomended “features”. They are still spam.

        • ratamies

Well, basically we expect more sophisticated solution like improved version of Opera 12 RSS reader. See this extension as example: https://addons.opera.com/en-gb/extensions/details/smart-rss/

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Why you do not add Chromecast extension to the Opera add-ons? Or implement an installing extensions from CWS out-of box? I think it’s too unobvious that you need to install “Download Chrome extension” to install Chromecast extension from Chrome Web Store.

    • BK

Yep, this current experience is broken. We will look into this.

  • Eugene B.

Check your server guys. It appears and disappears on the ftp sometimes.

  • Michal

I bought Yubikey 4 to login on different websites, but at the moment it only works on Chrome (I’ve only tried Chrome and Opera). Will you support this U2F thing in the future? To be honest I thought that was #cryptotoken in flags, but that didn’t work at all, so I probably misunderstood something.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s probably still a work in progress.

    • Aneta Reluga

As Leonardo said, and also: which Opera version are you using? The support for FIDO U2F is targeted for Opera 40, to my best knowledge. And also, which sites are you trying to use, if you can disclose? Thanks.

      • Michal

I’m using Opera beta 40.0, and Dropbox is probably the main site I’m trying to access. On Chrome it recognises the key, but on Opera it just asks me for the authorization password from my mobile app.

        • Aneta Reluga

Dropbox says explicitly “Dropbox only supports using a security key when signing in on the website using the Chrome web browser. ” so, if possible, could you temporarily try making Opera look like Chrome and retry?
You can do this with the following steps: exit Opera, run the command line ‘cmd’, from cmd go to the Opera beta folder and run:
          launcher –user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/52.0.2743.82 Safari/537.36″
Then please try again to connect to Dropbox. What would be the result then?

          • Michal

            Yepp, it worked. Thanks, Aneta.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Błażej, thanks for the article, and congrats on the first Opera beta 40! 😉

    Removed flags: #autoupdate-notifications, #bookmarks-bar-toggle-in-manager (toggle the bookmarks bar option remains), #certificate-transparency, #context-menu-button, #country-dependent-default-theme, #crash-monitoring, #crash-monitoring-posix, #extension-top-sites-api, #no-theme-overlay (feature remains), #other-webui-new-layout, #show-start-page-hints, #start-page-config, #start-page-web-ui-components, #web-ui-native-context-menus.

    • BK

      Thx !

  • Nekomajin43

I like the new monochrome-ish design of the internal pages, but please remove the opacity from the navbar too. It looks good in the start page, but really ugly elsewhere, especially if the sidebar is enabled. Just use the background color of the sidebar of the internal pages.

    • BK

Hm. This was discussed internally and designers agreed it’s better this way as provided.

      • Nekomajin43

        Well, I disagree. 🙂

There is a nice grey-white interface with monochrome icons, and there is a colorful, semi-transparent stripe in the middle. It was fine, when the sidebar of the internal pages was transparent too. But now it’s really ugly.

    • Druszlak

Contrast is a key, man. 😉

      • Nekomajin43

        Why do you want contrast?

        • Druszlak

It’s essential aspect of modern design language.

          • Nekomajin43

            To create ugly interfaces?

          • Druszlak

To differentiate particular parts of the interface and make them more visible. There is nothing wrong with current implementation, imagine it like layers – all internal pages are opening above the SD, but you still want to see navbar to… navigate. 😉

          • Nekomajin43

It is wrong. I can see a nice interface with an ugly transparent and colorful stripe in it.

  • Sidney Guioy

“Video pop out button is not shown for short videos (shorter than 16 seconds).”
Actually it was quite useful, i would love to see an option to enable that again !
I use it for gif ( now videos ) that take some time to load, so poping them out allow me to continue scrolling while it load.

A simple Right Click => would make it good for me ! 🙂

  • ratamies

“Suggestion engine delivers now previous searches in address field and speed dial search”
Wow! Really nice. I missed this feature a lot from Opera 12. It was so annoying to retype a long search request just to change one word. Thanks!

By the way another small improvement would be really needed: please add missing mouse gesture for the “Clone tab” action.

  • Jaiba Mon

Excellent job, as always. I am glad to see it can be possible to hide these Speed Dial suggestions.

RSS is great too, I hope the mobile dev team can do something to show the same RSS than the Desktop version.

Anyway, keep up the good work. Opera has become better and better with each version, it’s so different than Chrome now, an improvement.

  • Mes Tek
  • Oskar

Nice, big update! Would love to sync passwords to my phone though, annoying to not have access to them on the go!

When Opera 15 came it was said that Opera would focus on browser development – and secondary clients wouldn’t be added to Opera.

Now that the policy seems to have changed, let us be reminded that maintaining and developing these secondary clients is away from web browser development.

Will Opera continue to develop web browser? Will we at some point get such features as Tab Stacking?

    • Leonardo Gomes

What do you call ‘secondary clients’?

      • Nicholas Loomans

Mail, RSS, Torrents, VPN, AdBlocker, etc

        • Leonardo Gomes

Opera doesn’t have a mail or a torrent client. RSS, VPN and Ad-blocker are useful additions as they bring a better experience for the users, specially the last two.

          • Nicholas Loomans

It used to back in the day. I wasn’t commenting on AR’s comment, just explaining the term you didn’t understand.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Well, being browser development the main business of Opera, i guess that while existing Opera will develop its browser.

Regarding new features being added, they are always doing it. However they need to focus on those that may bring some benefits for the users and don’t just keep adding features just to say that they are doing it.

New features means new and more code and it may lead to more bugs and difficulties in maintain de code. That’s why things need to be discussed, investigated before being implemented.

Unfortunately, not all of the request can be granted implementation.

      • sgrandin

The lack of user placement for the tab bar, a user home page button and scalable printing (and print review) is not result of anything “unfortunate,” but expression of a deliberate preference for bells and whistles over elementary day-to day user needs.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, implementing or not a feature will always be a preference but not just it.

How do those features would benefit the users, the majority of them?

I would like to be able to put tab bar on the side but i know it’s far from being something that would make a big difference in the daily life of an average user.

Home page button? How many still set a home page nowadays? 1%?

Print preview is already there. And printing (to a paper) is something that people are doing less and less.

  • siamak

    Hi
for me it just 2 more things missing from opera 12.x to satisfy me to migrate to New opera
    1. Nickname for bookmarks
2.toggle panel for extention sidebar —–> Very Important
Can I exept this two any soon? please any of Devs reply me, Thanks.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I wouldn’t expect any of those in a near future, specially number 1.

      • BK

I would love to have nicknames too 🙂

        • siamak

Thanks, any plan to add this two?

      • siamak

why not? Dificult to develop? I think very easy for devs to add.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t remember any noticeable change related to bookmarks lately, so i guess they don;t seem to be aiming that feature.

Anyway, why should they add this?

  • Holub Ivan

    How to disable recommended news?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      You can’t.

      • jedy123

You can in the Speed Dial Options dropdown menu.

        • Leonardo Gomes

There is a option to disable News on Start Page but not recommend news on the news page.

    • Nekomajin43

      +1

  • Michal

Does anyone know where to find the Personal News tab? It’s enabled in flags, but I cannot seem to find the tab.

    • Aneta Reluga

It’s accessible from the start page sidebar as a separate page (if you have News ticked OFF in the start page configuration panel). For more accessible items, please turn on “Show advanced settings” in the Settings please.

      • Michal

It’s disabled, but I clear my history every evening, so it doesn’t matter. I turned the news off in the start page configuration, so now it works 🙂 Thank you.

  • Will you return the possibility to disable DirectWrite in 40? My Opera just got updated to 39, and I was shocked being not able to find a flag to disable it. Please, don’t delete it like this, DirectWrite makes my eyes hurt when reading small text.

    • Nekomajin43

      Use the zoom?

    • Alex Wazovskiy

This feature has gone forever, since Chromium developers decided to deprecate it. Opera developers just follows them.

    • Leonardo Gomes

The experiment with Directwrite has been ended by Chromium and the resource incorporated into the engine. Therefore, all Chromium based browsers will use Directwrite unless they start forking Chromium.

Have you tried to set a (bigger) minimum font size?

  • Diego

Hi everybody. I can’t access the Pandora.com player (flash player error) It was working up to version 38, I think! Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    – – –
I’m using Win 10, Opera Developer version 40. Thanks!

    • BK

Hm.. I was able to unlock this US only webpage via VPN 🙂
but I can confirm flash player error, win 10, fp 22.0.0.209

      • Is it any different after the Windows 10 anniversary update?

Is the error the clicktoplay plug in issue partly because the plug in content is behind other content? edit: looks like it it, it tries to call the flash player content but the click to play is not activated nor is the plug in called (might be in the funny way the plug in is called), the site also uses vendor prefixes (-webkit- -moz- -o- -ms- -khtml-) from the Modernizr v1.7 js file used

I also see it in Opera 39 stable in OS X 10.11.6 (poking them on Twitter) https://twitter.com/chasapple/status/762384360917958656)
They replied 6 minutes later, I @opera in the response feel free to ask them to fix the site

looks like the Flash Player is called in (.js file) http://www.pandora.com/pandora.js?v=125414811

        • It is a Pandora site bug it looks like as Safari 9.1.2 gets asked do I trust this site to use Flash Player (even when I masked Safari as Chrome on Mac)

  • Cannot find Fox News on the sources list.

  • sgrandin

Your adblocker isn’t offering much help with rlslog.net. And AdBlock fails too: AdBlock for Chrome now uses the $generichide element, but AdBlock for Opera doesn’t yet have it and AdBlock say no ETA yet.

  • Spiryts

I have problem on tumblr, when i reblog posts with bigger image, frame is moving but image don’t.
    http://i65.tinypic.com/2e24jly.png

    • Leonardo Gomes

Seems to be a Chromium issue as it happens in Chrome too.

  • sgrandin

Another good example of why print scaling (built in) is important: http://www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/sports/a21183/justin-gatlin-usain-bolt-rio-olympics/

With Firefox, 80% scaling is very readable and takes 8 meaningful pages, four pieces of paper (duplex). And that can be adjusted per reader preferences. With Opera 40, that 8 pages becomes 11 and takes 6 pieces of paper. Is Opera invested in paper companies – or just making users’ lives a little harder?

    • Marko Koivuniemi

Completely off-topic but interesting article about cheater.

    • What OS?

  • Nekomajin43

Does anyone have problems with deleting search engines? A few weeks ago, I deleted some of my old custom search engines via the search engine manager in the Settings. Everything was fine, then I restarted the browser, and they came back. I did this a few times, and after a restart, all my deleted engines were there again.

It was an issue with both 38 and 39 stable.

  • Herr Pietrus

Guys, once again I’m begging you for switch to set default SD/Bookmarks graphic!
I don’t want these ugly addresses on colorful backgrounds when I save “sessions”! And I don’t want to use random, very often not so really good pictures from the website! Default graphic should be the whole page thumbnail!

    • Kornelia

      Suggestions are always welcome.

      • Herr Pietrus

I hope so! I don’t know whether Opera knows which graphic is the whole page thumbnail and which is the picture taken from the website , but if Opera knows that adding such option shouldn’t be complicated. Even only in flags… (but as a permanent, not temporarily solution)
Of course sometimes pictures are better than the whole website screenshoot but usually I they don’t 🙂

  • Cobalt
    • Herr Pietrus

They have totally different shape. And yellow folders were replaced by the grey ones in order to fit the Opera’s skin.

    • xirit64

Not a bug but a personal preference (Chrome be it) and the usual bugwizard abuse.

  • Kevinar

It would be possible to power saving mode battery remembered the ability to enable / disable restarting the browser?

    • Kornelia

There is an option ‘Save battery automatically’. It will leave battery saver option enabled after restart: -when unplugged, -when 80% battery, etc. Your choice. It will be visible after you click ‘Enable battery saver’ in Settings.

      • Kevinar

        Thank you 🙂

  • I am experiencing frequent crashes that seem to stem from a specific action. Often times, when I am watching a Youtube video in one browser window and I close a different browser window, Opera stutters then crashes. It isn’t a 100% occurrence and I am unsure whether this only happens with Youtube videos playing.

I have the latest beta 40.0.2308.3, no extensions, and a custom theme.

    • Kornelia

Thanks for this report. What’s your operating system? I’ll take a closer look and try to reproduce your issue.

      • Sorry, I just saw your question. I’m on Windows 10 Build 14393.

  • jedy123

Every time I try to sign in to synchronise my account I get the message ‘An error occurred. Please try again.’ The stable version (v39) works as expected.

I am using Opera Beta 40.0.2308.3 and OSX 10.9.5.

    • Kornelia

I’ve just checked and I don’t have any troubles syncing on OSX 10.9. Please check FAQ for details: http://www.opera.com/help/account

      • jedy123

It’s nothing I’m doing wrong. I can connect easily on Opera stable. I tried resetting my password but still get the error message.

        • Kornelia

I’ll check it with sync team and go back to you.

          • Kornelia

Ok, seems it’s a known issue and already fixed internally. For now on go to opera://settings/?search=block%20third-party%20cookies%20and%20site%20data, check the “Block third-party cookie and site data” option; Please let me know if this will work for you.

          • jedy123

Thanks for looking into this. Unfortunately I already have ‘block third party cookies’ checked so this wont solve the issue. Fortunately, I don’t use Beta (or Developer) as a main browser so if there is a fix, I look forward to testing it when Beta gets an update.

        • Kornelia

Why is there suddenly a GROUPON tile added on my Start Page/SpeedDial? Seeing this on two different machines. This is not in the suggestions section but in the regular part. I hope this is not some misguided advertising scheme…

On occasion with updates I see some new tiles added to the Start Page. I assume perhaps an advertising deal done with Opera? Whilst it’s a bit annoying, it’s no big deal deleting them. At least Opera have a proper, well thought out native Speed Dial and not the useless options offered by Firefox or Chrome!

How good the SpeedDial is, is beside the point (though why it still can’t sync between machines is beyond me). But if this is used as an advertising platform this is a very bad decision. And even more so after implementing a native Adblocker, which obviously doesn’t block Opera’s own ads…

Still no big deal deleting them though.

Hi, delete the unwanted items, disable the opera:flags#first-run-partner-content-update flag, restart the Opera, and see if this helps in your case.

      • JoopNL

Thanks. Although according to the description (“Makes partner content update to be checked immediately upon first run”), this will only postpone it. (?)

On the Speed Dial, please get rid of the suggestions area. Collect your money some other way, if that is what this is about.

There is an option to hide them in start page settings.

    New build – Opera beta 40.0.2308.11 😉

  • Nellaiseemai

Very good builds. Oper beta is my default browser now on Win 7.

Is chromecast only available only for Opera Beta and Opera Dev (Google cast addon works flawlessly on these browsers).

Google cast addon is getting installed on Opera Stable but not functioning. While clicking the Google cast addon the pop window shows nothing (blank).
Is it a known issue for Opera Stable. Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for RSS in personal news (it is feature, that resolve my opinion to Opera). Is it possible to include personal news to sync options? Now I need create new personal feeds from RSS on every connected device.
    P. S. support of XML as feed will be cool too.

I would like to know how export my RSS feed from Opera’s Personalized News to another platform.

It would be perfect that Opera can synchronize the RSS news feed.
